Microbial hydrogen production potential in shallow oceanic nepheloid layers. Auteur(s) : Schwarz, J Loeblich, L Schropp, S Éditeur(s) : Actes de colloques. Ifremer Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1986 Résumé : Seawater samples taken from shallow suspended particle maxima (20-57m) at or near the base of the surface mixed layer in various oceanic areas were tested for their potential to produce hydrogen (H sub(2)) gas. Results suggest that hydrogen can be bacterially produced through a fermentative process in microanaerobic niches within particulate matter. The organisms responsible for this process are ubiquitous within the temperate and tropical waters sampled. Enumeration of potential H sub(2)-producing bacteria using fluorescent antibody techniques yielded a maximum at the base of the surface mixed layer, the same depth where the greatest H sub(2) gas production potential was observed. Hydrogen-producing bacteria comprised up to 15% of the total bacterial direct count (AODC). Findings indicate that bacteria associated with shallow nepheloid layers are capable of producing gas and thus contributing to the observed supersaturated gas concentration in the marine environment. Role of bacteria in the gastral cavity of Anthozoa. Auteur(s) : Herndl, G Velimirov, B Éditeur(s) : Actes de colloques. Ifremer Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1986 Résumé : Bacterial density of the coelenteric fluid (CF) of some anthozoan species was determined in situ and under laboratory conditions. In all species examined bacterial density of the CF was higher in the gastral cavity than in ambient ranging from 10 super(5) up to 5 x 10 super(6) cells. ml super(-1). Incubation experiments with the CF indicate that a bacterial population within the coelenteron is efficiently controlled by the CF, favoring bacterial growth if bacterial densities are low in the CF and showing clearance activity at high bacterial densities. Feeding of pre-starved anthozoans caused a rapid response of coelenteric rod-shaped bacteria. Evidence is presented that coelenteric bacteria are digested periodically although they contribute 1% to the respiratory carbon losses of the antozoans tested. Therefore, it is more likely that the coelenteric bacterial population provide other substances which cannot be synthesized by the host. Growth patterns of natural seawater bacterial communities incubated in situ. Auteur(s) : Turley, C Lochte, K Éditeur(s) : Actes de colloques. Ifremer Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1986 Résumé : Using in situ incubations in dialysis bags of natural bacterial communities, the change in growth rates over a 2-day period has been studied for the community as a whole and for different morphological groups within the community. A sequence of events during growth of both communities well above (4m) and well below (60m) the thermocline in the stratified waters, close to a shallow sea front in the Irish Sea, was noted. There was evidence not only of a periodic pattern of growth of the whole bacterial community but also of synchronous cell division of groups within the community. An increase in mean cell volume of both 4 m and 60 m bacterial communities preceded an increase in specific growth rate which usually coincided with a decrease in mean cell volume. There are distinct differences in numbers of phytoplankton, protozooplankton, macrozooplankton and fish between the waters above and below the thermocline. Some of these organisms exhibit diurnal rhythms and their possible influence on the growth rates and rhythms of bacterial communities in each water mass is discussed. Ifremer. Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1995 Résumé : Informations gathered in the mangrove of the Fort-De-France bay of Martinique (F.W.I.) showed a decreased physiological condition of Crassostrea rhizophorae in the south part of the bay explained by the presence of zinc and by physico-chemical parameters modified in the wet season, such as decreased salinity and decreased levels of nutrients. Bioaccumulation of zinc, lead and cadmium was highly correlated to sediment contamination. Contamination by pesticides and organochlorides was found mainly in oysters from the North part of the bay, characterized by industrial activities and agricultural inputs. Recent developments in the detection of phycotoxins Auteur(s) : Hess, Philipp Nicolau, Elodie Éditeur(s) : Actes de Colloque: Avancées et nouvellles technologies en toxinologie, éditeurs: Julien BARBIER, Evelyne BENOIT, Pascale MARCHOT, César MATTEI, Denis SERVENT Résumé : Over the past seven years, methods available for the detection of phycotoxins have been extensively reviewed in a number of international expert committees, such as the consultations organised by FAO/IOC/WHO and EFSA, as well as by individual scientists. These reviews have shown that the methods available have severe limitations for the use in official control, either due to their limited scope and detection capability or due to a lack of calibration standards, reference materials and validation efforts. The present review focuses on recent developments in the detection of phycotoxins in several areas of applied research. Not being able to exhaustively describe all recent developments, the review focussed on three areas of interest to the authors: (i) detection of ultra-trace amounts of toxins, (ii) metabolism of toxins and their localisation in biological tissues, and (iii) approaches to detect unknown toxins or analogues of known toxins. Miniaturisation in combination with physico-chemical techniques appears to be a very efficient approach to detect low trace amounts of individual toxin analogues. In particular, the detection of azaspiracids and okadaic acid and analogues, using micro-filtration and on-line pre-concentration techniques, has shown to be useful for the characterisation of various algal and shellfish species. In the area of interactions of toxins with shellfish and mammalian systems, it is noted that several studies on biomarkers reveal either protein biomarkers of exposure to toxins or potential pathways of metabolism of the toxins themselves. A particular focus is given to recent findings in the areas of brevetoxin metabolism and biomarkers as well as azaspiracid localisation and metabolism. Finally, the detection of novel compounds is a particularly challenging area. The interest in this area has risen over the past years following cases of unexplained mouse toxicity such as the UK cockle toxicity and the French atypical toxicity in mussels and oysters from the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. Some attention is given to immuno-, functional and cellular bio-assays for the identification of bioactive agents in shellfish. Energy-protein management by some warmwater finfishes. Auteur(s) : Luguet, P Moreau, Y Éditeur(s) : Actes de colloques Ifremer, Tahiti, French Polynesia, 20 Feb - 4 Mar 1989, n°9, chap. 68, pp.751-755 Résumé : If warmwater finfish protein requirements as level in diet is low, absolute intake per day is similar to those of coldwater species. But relation of this requirement with specific growth rate differs for strictly warmwater fishes as Tilapias. Analysis of partition between protein and non-protein energy retention shows that these species with Clarias make a better use of non-protein energy provided and consequently improve their protein retention. Better carbohydrate digestibility and metabolism are propounded as part of the explanation. Problems and perspectives of the pearl oyster aquaculture in French Polynesia. Auteur(s) : Cabral, P Éditeur(s) : Actes de colloques Ifremer, Tahiti, French Polynesia, 20 Feb - 4 Mar 1989, n°9, chap. 7, pp.57-66 Résumé : The first attempt to obtain artificial pearls from the black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in French Polynesia dates back to 1963. The pearl oyster culture has grown quickly especially since the eighties. This industry is now the first exportation in value of French Polynesia. 19 atolls of the Tuamotus island have at this time one or more farms and this activity has more and more attractiveness. The rise of this industry has consequently a lot of socio-ecomic repercussions on these atolls. However, as a young industry, the technics and the development are not always controlled and a lot of problems appeared these last years. Ifremer Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1992 Résumé : The specific analysis of preys allows to determine the composition of cuttlefishes alimentary diet in natural conditions. This analysis based on exploitation of stomachal contents shows a majority of Fishes and Brachyura Crustaceans consumed. The alimentary diet with a Fish dominance in winter area (off Belle-Ille island) becomes a Crustacea dominance when adult cuttlefishes come in Morbihan Bay, in March, for reproduction. As for newly-born, they eat exclusively Crustacean Amphipoda and Macrura. Ifremer. Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1985 Résumé : The aquaculture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii is launched in Martinigue by the regional council in 1976. A first "green water" type hatchery is built and provides juveniles to the first ponds. In 1978, CNEXO is asked to cooperate in scientific assistance. A new hatchery is built with COP "clear water" system and produces in 1980. The development of ponds (20 ha) needs the increase of the hatcheries capacity, which is now done with one single method and intensive larval first stage (7-8 millions PL. cap). In Guadeloupe, the first ponds started in 1978. Two cooperatives and 11 ha of ponds at this time have determined the construction of CNEXO in the construction of a regional hatchery. A small light one is already under production since July 83. Ifremer. Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1985 Résumé : Sexual differentiation of the marine leatherback turtle is sensitive to temperature. Incubation of eggs below 29 degree C results in 100% males, whereas incubationa bove 30 degree C results in 100% potential females at hatching. Therefore, the threshold temperature lies between 29 and 30 degree C as has been found for other marine turtles (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas ). Among hatchlings from natural nests in French Guiana, 10% were males, 20% were potential females and 70% had an intermediate phenotype. The sand temperature at 60 cm of depth, near one nest, was recorded and was found to vary between 29 and 30 degree C during the presumed thermosensitive period. These results will be useful to marine turtle hatcheries which seek to manipulate sex ratios among their neonates.
