Hydrological and trophic characteristics of tuna habitat: consequences on tuna distribution and longline catchability Auteur(s) : Bertrand, Arnaud Josse, Erwan Bach, Pascal Gros, Philippe Dagorn, Laurent Éditeur(s) : NRC Résumé : We studied relationships between tropical tunas (albacore (Thunnus alalunga), bigeye (Thunnus obesus), and yellowfin (Thunnus albacares)) and their biotic and abiotic environments through simultaneous acoustic observations of tunas and their prey, experimental longline catch, and oceanographic data in French Polynesia. Vertical habitat limits were estimated based on temperature and dissolved oxygen at capture data. We then studied tuna-micronekton relationships to better understand how tuna occupy the pelagic space, At a regional scale, tunas were more abundant in areas rich in prey with favourable hydrological conditions. Inside such areas, at the scale of a longline set, however, the longline catches were maximal only when prey were not distributed in dense patches (except for yellowfin tuna). We interpreted this result by considering that areas with high prey abundance attract tunas, but at a small scale, if prey are patchy distributed, tunas are more inclined to feed on them rather than on longline baits. The effect of patches on yellowfin tuna catch per unit effort (CPUE) does not appear likely because this species also feeds on the mixed layer, where patch density was very low. Not only hydrological characteristics, but also prey density and prey patch characteristics, should be taken into account for interpreting longline CPUE data. Pour ce faire, nous avons réalisé simultanément, en Polynésie Française, des observations acoustiques des thons et de leurs proies, des pêches à l'aide d'une palangre instrumentée et des mesures hydrologiques. Des limites d'habitat vertical des thons calculées sur la base de données de température et d'oxygène dissous sont proposées. Nous étudions ensuite les relations thons-micronecton afin de mieux comprendre la stratégie d'occupation de l'espace des thons. A une échelle régionale, les thons sont plus abondants dans des zones riches en proies avec des conditions hydrologiques favorables. Cependant, à l'intérieur de telles zones, les captures sont maximales lorsque les proies ne sont pas distribuées sous forme de patchs (sauf pour le thon à nageoires jaunes). Nous interprétons ces résultats en considérant que les zones de fortes abondances en proies attirent les thons mais, qu'à une échelle fine, si les proies sont distribuées sous la forme de patchs denses, les thons s'en nourrissent préférentiellement, au détriment des appâts de la palangre. Ces patchs ne semblent pas influencer les prises par unité d'effort (PUE) des thons à nageoires jaunes, probablement parce que cette espèce se nourrit également dans la couche homogène où la densité en patchs est très faible. Les caractéristiques hydrologiques, mais également la densité en proies et leur type de distribution, devraient donc être pris en compte pour l'interprétation des données de PUE. A cost-benefit analysis of improving trawl selectivity in the case of discards: The Nephrops norvegicus fishery in the Bay of Biscay Auteur(s) : Macher, Claire Guyader, Olivier Talidec, Catherine Bertignac, Michel Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The Nephrops trawl fishery is one of the most important fisheries in the Bay of Biscay. The fishery management essentially relies on conservation measures, a total at I owed catch (TAC) for Nephrops together with a mini mum landing size (MLS) and minimum trawl mesh size (70 mm stretched mesh). These measures have failed to prevent high discard levels of many species that characterize the fishery. Nephrops trawlers thus discard about half of their Nephrops catches in numbers (a third in weight) of which only 30% survive. Nephrops discards mainly occur in younger Nephrops age groups below the MLS. This is a waste for the already overexploited Nephrops stock as well as for the fleet. Based on a bio-economic simulation model, the paper analyses the consequences of several scenarios of improving Nephrops selectivity. The potential impacts of these scenarios on Nephrops biomass, landings, discards and economic indicators (e.g. rent) are examined and a cost-benefit analysis of each scenario is carried out. We show that a better exploitation pattern would benefit fisheries that have high level of discards. Reducing non-commercial Nephrops discards leads to positive net present values of rent with better value realized from the production potential and limited short-term losses for the fishing units. By taking account of the economic dynamics of increasing effort however, we show that selectivity measures are insufficient. Regulating access to the fishery is also required to ensure the sustainability of the fishery and a better exploitation of the production potential. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. The fishing ships taken to account are represented by annual profiles of landing specific compositions. Five fishing strategies have been identified. A segmentation method using symbolic objects allows a formaI characterisation of the different strategies. These strategies are studied according to several general characteristics usually used for management rules elaboration (power, length, ship age). The typological analysis allows to characterise two main exploitation ways, one directed to the catch of a few species (Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardus), the other characterised by the exploitation of a great diversity of species. By this way, it is possible to estimate how the catch of low represented species can significantly contribute to the exploitation of a resource. Cette étude s'appuie sur l'utilisation successive de plusieurs méthodes d'analyses multivariées pour réaliser une typologie de la flottille chalutière du port de Sète, principal port de pêche français de la Méditerranée. Les unités de pêche étudiées sont représentées à l'aide d'un profil annuel de la composition spécifique de leurs débarquements. Cinq stratégies de pêche ont ainsi pu être identifiées. La mise en oeuvre d'une méthode de segmentation permet une caractérisation formelle de ces différentes stratégies à l'aide d'objets symboliques. Les stratégies sont étudiées en référence à plusieurs caractéristiques générales couramment utilisées en gestion des flottilles de pêche (puissance, longueur, âge du bateau, etc.). Synthèse de l'étude et des campagnes à la mer 2011 sur l'exploitation aux vire-lignes des espèces démersales profondes autour de La Réunion Auteur(s) : Fleury, Pierre-gildas Evano, Hugues Le Ru, Loic Aureche, Vincent Résumé : In an effort to implement new fishing activities for the small scale fisheries of Reunion Island, a prospecting cruise targeting deep demersal fish (200 to 600 m) was set up on the west coast of Reunion Island in 2000. This project was carried out by the Regional Fishery Committee and the French Institute for the Exploration of the Sea (Ifremer). Large commercial stocks were identified, and numerous professional or recreational fishermen started employing electric winches to exploit these deep resources.
However, the deep demersal species are a fragile resource due mainly to low growth rates and late sexual maturation. Due to the rapid increase in fishing pressure, Ifremer was asked to set up a new study and two scientific campaigns were carried out in 2011 (68 fishing trips being conducted with 559 dropline operations).
The first cruise was conducted at the same sites, using the same types of fishing gear and methods used in 2000. A marked drop of greater than 90% was observed in the catches of commercial species, together with a decrease of most fish sizes, attesting the overexploitation of these stocks. Only, catches of the small non-commercial shark (Squalus megalops) remained important (50% in number and weight of total catches).
The second cruise extended the prospection area to all waters surrounding Reunion Island . The overexploitation was confirmed in the west of Reunion Island, and in to a lesser degree in the north. Yields were better along the east and the south coasts. Concurrently, the efficiency of 2 hook sizes was compared : small hooks caught significantly more fish but of significantly smaller body sizes, resulting in comparable total weight of fish. We conclude that medium size hooks (i.e. type 7/0) have a significant selectivity on the fish size without loss in the global catch yield.
Various types of baits were also tested with the flesh of small local pelagic fish species (Selar crumenophtalmus and Decapterus macarellus) appearing to be the most efficient.
This study provides helpful indicators for the management of demersal fish stocks in Reunion island, which have been poorly surveyed and poorly regulated until now. However, the total fishing effort, especially from recreational fishermen, remains the most important factor to be quantified. Dans la perspective de diversifier la Petite Pêche réunionnaise, une campagne de prospection des stocks de poissons démersaux profonds (200 à 600 m) avait été réalisée en 2000 par le Comité Régional des Pêches Maritimes (CRPM) et l'Institut Français de Recherche pour L'Exploitation de la Mer (Ifremer) dans l'ouest de l'île de La Réunion. Elle a montré l'existence de stocks commercialement intéressants et de nombreux pêcheurs, professionnels et plaisanciers se sont équipés en moulinets électriques pour exploiter ces ressources profondes. Cependant les poissons démersaux profonds représentent une ressource fragile du fait, notamment, de leur croissance lente et de leur maturité sexuelle tardive. Aussi, face à cette augmentation rapide de la pression de pêche, Ifremer a été sollicité pour mener une nouvelle étude ; et deux nouvelles campagnes expérimentales ont été réalisées en 2011 (68 marées ayant permis la réalisation de 559 filages). La première campagne a repris les mêmes sites de pêche, le même matériel et la même méthodologie qu’en 2000. Elle montre que les rendements en espèces commerciales ont diminué de façon très nette (plus de 90%) ainsi que la taille de certaines espèces, indicateurs caractéristiques d'une surexploitation des stocks. Seules les captures de requins zépines (Squalus megalops,) non commercialisées à La Réunion, restent comparables à celles de 2000 avec la moitié des captures totales. La 2e campagne a étendu la prospection à tout le tour de l'île. La surpêche (baisse des rendements et des tailles de poisson) est confirmée dans l'ouest et à un moindre degré sur la côte nord. Les rendements sont meilleurs dans l'est et le sud. Parallèlement, 2 tailles d'hameçons ont été comparées : les petits hameçons capturent un nombre significativement plus élevé de poissons par filage, mais de tailles plus petites, ce qui se traduit par un poids global comparable. Les hameçons de taille moyenne (type 7/0) ont donc une sélectivité significative sur la taille des poissons capturés sans nuire au rendement global. Des comparaisons ont aussi porté sur les types d'appât : Les laizes de petits pélagiques locaux (pêche-cavale et bancloche) se révèlent les plus efficaces et les plus sélectives vis-à-vis des espèces commerciales. Cette étude fournit des indicateurs utiles à la gestion des stocks démersaux jusqu'ici peu étudiés et peu encadrés. Mais la grande inconnue reste l'effort de pêche total sur cette ressource et notamment celui des pêcheurs plaisanciers. Many works advocate for the use of marine reserves as a central element of future stock management in a sustainable perspective. In the present paper, we address the influence of protected areas upon fisheries sustainability within an eco-systemic framework through a dynamic bio-economic model integrating a trophic web, catches and environmental uncertainties. The model is spatially implicit. The evaluation of the ecosystem is designed through the respect along time of constraints of both conservation and guaranteed captures. Using the mathematical concept of invariance kernel in a stochastic context, we define different MPA effects according to biodiversity catches or mixed points of view. Numerical simulations inspired from data of Abore coral reef reserve in New Caledonia illustrate the main concepts. In this case, it is pointed out how MPA conservation effect is not necessarily conflicting with MPA catches effect. it is shown that such a co-viability requires medium exploitation rate. Then the biogeographical fishery complexes are defined, being characterized by assemblages of commercially valuable and actually caught species. These complexes are arranged according to the latitude with sometimes longitudinal subdivisions. At last with technical and economical criteria, such as the yield of the fisheries, the finality of the catches and the conditions of the exploitation which add themselves to the biogeographical complexes, the authors attempt to single out geographical fishing provinces. La première partie analyse l'évolution de la pêche mondiale de 1950 à 1977 et sa situation présente : ralentissement du rythme de la croissance des captures, composition faunistique et répartition des pêches dans l'océan selon la profondeur, la distance à la côte et la latitude. Disentangling the relative effects of these factors has been a major goal of fisheries science for both conceptual and management reasons. By examining the variability of 169 tuna and billfish time series of catch and catch per unit effort (CPUE) throughout the Atlantic as well as their linkage to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), we find that the importance of these factors differed according to the spatial scale. At the scale of the entire Atlantic the patterns of variations are primarily spatially structured, whereas at a more regional scale the patterns of variations were primarily related to the fishing gear. Furthermore, the NAO appeared to also structure the patterns of variations of tuna time series, especially over the North Atlantic. We conclude that the patterns of variations in fisheries time series of tuna and billfish only poorly reflect the underlying dynamics of these fish populations; they appear to be shaped by several successive embedded processes, each interacting with each other. Our results emphasize the necessity for scientific data when investigating the population dynamics of large pelagic fishes, because CPUE fluctuations are not directly attributable to change in species' abundance. First, a comparative review of fishery statistics is developed. Recent catches on fads by purse seiners can be estimated at a level of one million tons yearly. This comparison allows to describe the fishing zones and catch trends over time, the species composition and size taken in the various fad fisheries. Skipjack tuna is the dominant species in most fad fisheries, but significant amounts of yellowfin and bigeye are also frequently taken under fads. The paper also presents an overview of various observer data concerning the by-catches of the various fisheries using fads. This comparison allows to estimate the total worldwide yearly by-catches at about 100,000 t, and their species composition in each ocean. The fad technology used in the various oceans by purse seiners is described. The recent use of fads by purse seiners has introduced major uncertainties in most stock assessments, because analyses are hampered by changes in the fishing effort in a fad fishery, by changes in fishing zones and in sizes caught. As a last point, the management of fads presently done or in view by the various tuna bodies are introduced. It appears that the present massive use of fads worldwide is perhaps an unsafe fishing mode, which could produce serious overfishing of many stocks. There is then a consensus that the use of fads needs to be controlled and limited to sustainable biological levels. Le stock de Lambi (Strombus gigas, L.) en Martinique : analyse de la situation 1986-1987, modélisation de l'exploitation, options d'aménagement Auteur(s) : Rathier, I Rathier, I Éditeur(s) : Université de Bretagne Occidentale Résumé : The stock of Lambi, Strombus gigas (gastropod: strombidae), coastal benthic resource, has been exploited artisanally since the prehistoric period in Martinique. Nowadays, three lines of work exploit the species: free diving, nets (since the middle of the century) and scuba diving since 1985. This report presents the activity of each line of work, surveyed directly from 1986 to 1987: fishing zones and resource allocation, production, effort and performance, detail of catches (by length). The socio economic characteristics of the lambi fishermen are studied. The significant production of leisure fishing is also estimated. The decrease in the production and performance, as well as the lowering of the size of the first catch for about thirty years show that the stock is overexploited. The biological phenomenon of the stock: growth of the shell (length and shell lip), growth in weight, acquiring of sexual maturity, natural mortality are studied. The factors of mortality through fishing are estimated by class of length for the current exploitation regime by pseudo-cohort analysis. If the results confirm that the stock is overexploited, the level of overexploitation of the stock cannot be specified because of the presence of a number of lipped adults not yet too exploited in water deeper than 20 metres. The analysis of the dynamic process of the exploited population indicates two ways to the production of the stock: the forcing of the recruitment and the regulation of the exploitation regime. The lack of economic profitability of the production of juveniles over 30 mm and the difficulties raised by their collection in their natural habitat lead to the rationalization of the exploitation. The production and performance (by recruits) simulations performed for different exploitation regimens indicate that the only two conceivable options are the introduction of a minimum catch size, i.e. lambi with forming lip, and the regulation of the fishing effort. The socio-economic implications of the introduction of the determined management measures show that their applicability level is very low, because of the Martinique fishermen polyactivity, their low socio-economic level and mostly because of the free access to the resource. As a consequence, it is suggested to create new professional structures with a wide jurisdiction, in order to locally manage the marine areas, their use and their resources. (unverified OCR) Le stock de lambi, Strombus gigas (gastéropode: strombidae), ressource benthique côtière, est exploitée artisanalement depuis l'époque préhistorique en Martinique. Trois métiers exploitent actuellement l'espèce: plongée libre, filets (depuis le milieu du siècle) et plongée en scaphandre autonome depuis 1985. Ce rapport présente l'activité de chaque métier, suivie de 1986 à 1987 par une enquête directe: zones de pêche et allocation de la ressource, productions, efforts et rendements, composition en longueur des captures. Les caractéristiques socioéconomiques des pêcheurs de lambi sont étudiées. La production d'une pêche plaisancière non négligeable est estimée. La diminution de la production, des rendements et l'abaissement de la taille de première capture depuis une trentaine d'années révèlent que le stock est surexploité. Les phénomènes biologiques du stock: croissance de la coquille (longueur et pavillon), croissance en poids, acquisition de la maturité sexuelle, mortalité naturelle sont étudiés. Les coefficients de mortalité par pêche sont estimés par classe de longueur pour le régime d'exploitation actuel par l'analyse de pseudo-cohorte. Si les résultats confirment l'état surexploité du stock, le niveau de surexploitation ne peut être précisé en raison de l'existence d'adultes pavillonnés encore peu exploités sur les fonds de plus de 20 mètres. L'analyse des processus dynamiques de la population exploitée indique deux voies pour restaurer la production du stock: le forçage du recrutement et la régulation du régime d'exploitation. Le manque de rentabilité économique de l'élevage des juvéniles au-delà de 30 mm et les difficultés pour leur collecte dans le milieu naturel conduisent à rechercher la rationalisation de l'exploitation. Les simulations de la production et du rendement par recrue réalisées pour différents régimes d'exploitation indiquent que seule la mise en place d'une taille minimale de capture, i.e le lambi au pavillon en formation, et une régulation de l'effort de pêche sont envisageables. Les implications socio-économiques de la mise en oeuvre des mesures de gestion déterminées montrent que leur niveau d'applicabilité est très faible, en raison de la polyactivité des pêcheurs martiniquais, de leur faible niveau socioéconomique et surtout, du régime de libre accès à la ressource. The structure of the pseudoteeth is investigated here in a late Pliocene/early Pleistocene species, Pelagornis mauretanicus, using X-ray microtomography and thin sections. The results are interpreted with regard to the pseudotooth mode of growth, and have implications concerning aspects of Pelagornis ecology. The larger pseudoteeth are hollow and approximately cone-shaped, and the smaller ones are rostro-caudally constricted. The walls of pseudoteeth are composed of bone tissue of the fibro-lamellar type, which is intensively remodeled by Haversian substitution. The jaw bones display the same structure as the pseudoteeth, but their vascular canals are oriented parallel to the long axis of the bones, whereas they are perpendicular to this direction in the pseudoteeth. There is no hiatus or evidence of a fusion between the pseudoteeth and the jaw bones. Two possible models for pseudotooth growth are derived from the histological data. The most plausible model is that pseudotooth growth began after the completion of jaw bone growth, as a simple local protraction of periosteal osteogenic activity. Pseudotooth development thus occurred relatively late during ontogeny. The highly vascularized structure and the relative abundance of parallel-fibered bone tissue in the pseudoteeth suggest poor mechanical capabilities. The pseudoteeth were most likely covered and protected by the hardened, keratinized rhamphotheca in the adult during life. The late development of the pseudoteeth would involve a similarly late and/or partial hardening of the rhamphotheca, as displayed by extant Anseriformes, Apterygiformes and some Charadriiformes. This would add support to the hypothesis of a close phylogenetic relationship between Odontopterygiformes and Anseriformes. The late maturation of the Pelagornis feeding apparatus, and hence the delayed capability for efficient prey catching, suggests that Pelagornis was altricial. In the Halmahera area, rumpon increased cpue by 41% , landings of fish per ton of live bait increased by 24%, the consumption of diesel oil for tuna catches reduced by 46%, and profits increased from Rp 10 to 60 million by boat per year1. Tuna aggregation around rumpon increased catchability by more than 40% compared to free swimming tuna. The Halmahera skipjack fishery was assessed by combining catch and effort data from rumpon and pre-rumpon areas of the fishery, and showed that controlled effort could increase landings of approximately 15,000 t per year. Tagging data show that the Halmahera skipjack fishery is probably supported by a local unit stock. Philippine rumpons (payaos) were fished with small mesh purse seine and ring nets fishing small sized tunas 12-35 cm fl (40-50% of landings) and caused recruitment overfishing. Indonesian rumpons were fished with pole-and-line causing neither recruitment nor growth overfishing. In Guadeloupe, no allegation concerning ghost fishing was made public to date. In the absence of objective studies about this phenomenon, it is impossible to quantify the impact of these lost gears on the resource (Chaves et al. 2006). However, the characteristics of small-scale fishing existing in this area let think that it happens indeed that fishing machines are lost: - weather constraints, sometimes of catastrophic type (storms, hurricanes). The fishermen fix less racks (traps) during the period preceding the hurricane season in preparation for possible loss (Komla-Soukha and Bouchereau 2007). Of the 40 000 Caribbean traps around Guadeloupe, about 20 000 are lost each year during hurricane season, but continue to catch fish for many months (Burke and Maidens 2004); - accidents (most common causes after the literature) occurring during a fishing operation are events already well orally brought back (Macfayden et al. 2009); - the voluntary abandonment at sea of material by the fisherman for convenience reasons; - the consequences of conflicts of use (thefts, destruction of fishing gears, boardings of ships). It is the case in the Caribbean area in connection with the interactions related to the stake on resources exploitation (Blanchet et al. 2002). Our results also suggest that some caution must be takenwhen using capture–recapture models often used to assess population sizeas assumptions (such as equal probabilities of capture and recapture) maybe violated by individual learning to escape recapture. Manpower and investments have been constant through the maintenance of about 30 fads all around the island. The traditional techniques of fishing pelagic fishes have been adapted in order to maintain a high level of catches and ensure the income of the fishermen. This report describes different techniques to capture pelagic fish on fads such as drift fishing, dragnet fishing and longline fishing. Knowledge, professional experience of fishermen are the main factors in setting fads and sustaining adaptability. The strong relation between the knowledge of the fishermen and the techniques is discussed. Then, the strategies of fishing, influenced by the environmental and seasonal conditions, and the species, are analysed.Original Abstract: L'activite de la petite peche a l'ile de La Reunion connait, depuis quelques annees, une periode d'expansion rapide de la production de poissons pelagiques. Ce developpement est d'autant plus remarquable qu'il s'effectue, en ce qui concerne la peche professionnelle artisanale, a effectif et investissement presque constants. Cette etude s'attache a decrire les techniques de peche a la derive, a la traine et aux palangres, employees pour la capture de poissons pelagiques sur DCP. Bien que difficile a evaluer, l'experience du pecheur est un facteur determinant dans la mise en uvre de ces techniques et en permet l'amelioration constante. L'imbrication etroite entre le savoir-faire du pecheur et les techniques est egalement abordee et discutee. Enfin, les strategies de peche, fortement influencees par les conditions environnementales, les saisons et les especes rencontrees, y sont analysees. Here we show that phytoplanktonic primary production, estimated from an ocean-colour satellite (SeaWiFS), is related to global fisheries catches at the scale of Large Marine Ecosystems, while accounting for temperature and ecological factors such as ecosystem size and type, species richness, animal body size, and the degree and nature of fisheries exploitation. Indeed we show that global fisheries catches since 1950 have been increasingly constrained by the amount of primary production. The primary production appropriated by current global fisheries is 17-112% higher than that appropriated by sustainable fisheries. Global primary production appears to be declining, in some part due to climate variability and change, with consequences for the near future fisheries catches. Blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) fishing around FADs in Martinique (French West Indies) Auteur(s) : Taquet, Marc Reynal, Lionel Laurans, Martial Lagin, Alain-sabin Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : This paper examines the fishing of blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) around Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in Martinique (French West Indies). It is based on the compared analysis of catches from monthly experimental fishing surveys and sampling of commercial landings. The data collected in these two different ways allowed comparison of blackfin tuna length frequencies. A large part of the commercial landings were made up of young immature tuna with a fork length of less than 40 cm, whereas the experimental longline catches were mainly made up of fish with a fork length ranging between 55 and 75 cm. We give evidence that these discrepancies were mostly due to the fishing technique used. Indeed, contrarily to the experimental surveys, Martinican fishermen only fish during daytime and usually on the surface by trolling. This way, fishermen do not have access to the largest fish, which are found deeper. Out results suggested that a new fishing technique such as vertical longlining, could improve commercial catches of big blackfin tuna under FADs. Their populations are, however, characterized by large biomass fluctuations strongly affecting fisheries. The fishing gears and methods used to capture small pelagics have evolved to exploit the highly developed shoaling behavior of these species. Hence, faced to modern fishing this gregarious behavior becomes a disadvantage for fish. Fish behavior may be affected by environmental conditions and by fishing, at the same time that behavior impacts fishing. In this study, we seek to characterize the aggregative systems of small pelagic fishes inhabiting the Bay of Biscay by analyzing "acoustic images", defined as the group of echoes (planktonic layers, shoals, isolated targets) detected on a transect section of a given length. We analyzed the species composition, the spatial distribution and the evolution over time of acoustic images. We also studied the hydrological conditions of the bay, as well as the small pelagics French fishery in order to look for correlations between hydrology, commercial catch and fish aggregation patterns observed by acoustics. We observed the same species or group of species forming different types of aggregation according to habitat. Conversely, the same type of aggregation, associated with a particular habitat, can be produced by different species. The most notorious change observed during the studied period relates to small clupeoids aggregations in the vicinity of the Gironde estuary, whose structure evolved toward a greater fragmentation of shoals (a large number of small size detections) since 2000. Concerning commercial catches, pelagic trawlers fishing in pairs mainly seek for anchovy in the coastal areas, single pelagic trawlers capture mackerel and horse mackerel in deeper waters while purse seiners target mostly sardine near their fishing ports. Because of the coarse spatial resolution of commercial fishing data and the effect of the application of an international fisheries agreement limiting the fishing activity of French pelagic trawlers during spring, only small correlations between captures and types of aggregation were observed. La participation des petits poissons pélagiques dans les captures est remarquable. Leurs populations sont cependant caractérisées par des importantes fluctuations de biomasse, impactant fortement les pêcheries. Les méthodes et appareils de pêche utilisés pour capturer ces espèces ont évolué dans le sens d'exploiter le comportement grégaire très développé des petits pélagiques. Cette tendance à former de bancs devient alors désavantageuse pour le poisson face à la pêche moderne. Les conditions environnementales et la pêche peuvent affecter le comportement du poisson, en même temps que ce dernier est susceptible d'affecter l'activité halieutique. Le but de cette étude est de caractériser les systèmes agrégatifs des petits poissons pélagiques dans le golfe de Gascogne en étudiant des « images acoustiques », définies comme l'ensemble des échos (couches planctoniques, bancs, cibles isolées) détectés sur une section de radiale de longueur donnée. Nous analysons leur composition en espèces ainsi que leur distribution spatiale et leur évolution au cours du temps. Nous étudions aussi les conditions hydrologiques du golfe, ainsi que la pêcherie française de ces espèces afin de chercher des corrélations entre l'hydrologie, la capture commerciale et les types d'agrégations observés par acoustique. Nous avons observé qu'une espèce est capable de former des agrégations différentes en fonction de l'habitat, et inversement, le même type d'agrégation, associé à un habitat particulier, peut être produit par des espèces différentes. Le changement observé le plus évident concerne les agrégations de petits clupéiformes, dont la structure a évolué vers une plus grande fragmentation des détections (des petits bancs plus nombreux) depuis 2000. Par rapport à la pêche des professionnels, les chalutiers pélagiques en boeufs recherchent en priorité l'anchois dans la zone côtière, les pélagiques simples capturent le chinchard et le maquereau au large et les senneurs recherchent principalement la sardine à proximité des ports de pêche. À cause de la résolution spatiale trop sommaire des données de pêche et l'effet de l'application des accords internationaux limitant l'activité des chalutiers pélagiques au printemps, nous n'avons observé que peu des corrélations entre les captures et les types d'agrégation établis à partir de données issues des campagnes scientifiques. The Recopesca Project : a new example of participative approach to collect fisheries and in situ environmental data Auteur(s) : Leblond, Emilie Lazure, Pascal Laurans, Martial Rioual, Celine Woerther, Patrice Quemener, Loic Berthou, Patrick Éditeur(s) : Mercator Ocean Résumé : Face to the lack of data to assess precisely the spatial distribution of catches and fishing effort and for the environmental characterization of the fishing area, Ifremer has been implemented since 2005 a new project, Recopesca. It consists in fitting out a sample of voluntary fishing vessels with sensors recording data on fishing effort (and at mid-terms catches) and physical parameters such as temperature or salinity. Recopesca aims at setting up a network of sensors, for scientific purposes, to collect data and improve resources assessment and diagnostics on fisheries, and environmental data required for ecosystem-based management initiatives. The challenge was to develop sensors with no trouble for the fishermen, tough enough to be fixed up on fishing gears, self powered and autonomous. Insofar as the sample of targeted vessels intends to be representative of all the metiers and fleets, the sensors are modular and scalable to collect new data. Different sensors have been implemented: (i) a temperature-salinity sensor, able to record physical parameters, depth and duration of immersion, for passive and active gears, and (ii) a specific sensor to record number or length of passive gears. A GPS monitors the position of the vessels and the temperature or salinity profiles and series. Each sensor is equipped with a radio device transferring the data to a receiver on-board, called “concentrator” that sends the data to Ifremer central databases by GPRS. An anti-rolling weigh-scale has been developed and is currently on test to record catches per species and fishing operation. The presentation will show the first data and results of this participative approach. Since 2000, Ifremer has been implemented a Fisheries Information System (FIS), a multidisciplinary monitoring network allowing an integrated and comprehensive view of fishery systems including biological, technical, environmental and economical components. The FIS covers all the French fisheries, including the so-often neglected small-scale fisheries. One of the originalities of the FIS lies in the fleet monitoring procedure: a comprehensive collection of annual activity calendars aiming at characterizing the inactivity or activity of the vessels each month of the year and, in the latter case, the métiers practised (use of a gear to target one or several species) and the main fishing areas. This survey covers all the French fishing fleets and provides minimum but exhaustive information on the vessels. It is particularly instructive for the small-scale fisheries, where catches and effort data are often incomplete. Furthermore, this exhaustive data allows stratifying the fleet in fleets (typologies) and thus provides the basis (i) for the implementation of sampling schemes to estimate catches, landings, discards or economic performance of the different fleets and (ii) for the development of a fleet-métier matrix giving the possibility of identifying at the time, the structure of the whole fleet in fleets, the métier polyvalence of the vessels and the allocation of fishing effort on the different exploited fishing resources.
