This communication reports on a field experiments carried out on the Ouano reef barrier, New Caledonia. The analysis is based on a cross-shore network of pressure sensors deployed across the reef flat and within the lagoon. Confirming existing observations, the measurements show the strong filtering role of the reef barrier on the incoming wave energy The swell energy is dissipated and transferred toward lower frequencies, including the so-called infragravity (IG) and very low frequency (VLF) waves. During energetic event (Hs=4.2m), IG and VLF significant wave heights on the reef flat are observed to reach 1.2 and 0.7m, respectively. A variety of long waves modes are observed on the reef, combining standing and progressive-dissipative modes. In any cases, the VLF and IG waves are much more developed over and close to the reef flat than further inside the lagoon.

Résumé : Aquaculture of penaeid shrimps holds a major place in productions of animals. New Caledonia takes part to these productions by developing the breeding of Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Nowadays, penaeid larviculture can’t be undertaken unless antibiotics are used. Experiments in the Caledonian Aquacultural Laboratory (LAC IFREMER Saint-Vincent) put across to the development of two antibiotic prophylaxis plans for substitution of erythromycine, one plan with oxytetracycline (hydrochloride), the other plan with trimethoprime-sulfadiazine association. After an antimicrobial agent susceptibility testing of bacteria and an acute toxicity study, efficacity assays are the biological validation of these projects of protocols
L'aquaculture de la crevette Pénéide occupe une position majeure au sein des productions animales. La Nouvelle-Calédonie y participe activement grâce au développement de l'élevage de la crevette bleue du Pacifique Litopenaeus stylirostris. En l’état actuel de nos connaissances, l’élevage larvaire de crevettes ne peut être mené sans l’utilisation d’antibiotique Les expériences menées au Laboratoire Aquacole Calédonien (LAC IFREMER Saint-Vincent) ont conduit à la mise au point de deux plans d’antibioprévention de substitution à l’érythromycine, l’un employant l’oxytétracycline (chlorhydrate), l’autre utilisant l’association triméthoprime - sulfadiazine. Après une étude de la sensibilité des flores bactériennes hétérotrophe totale et Vibrionacée aux antibiotiques et une étude d’innocuité sur les larves de crevettes, les essais d’efficacité constituent la validation biologique des projets de protocoles.

Résumé : Marine bacteria are a rich source of bioactive metabolites. However, the microbial diversity of marine ecosystem still needs to be explored. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize bacteria with antimicrobial activities from various marine coastal environment of New Caledonia. We obtained 493 marine isolates from various environments and samples of which 63 (12.8%) presented an antibacterial activity against a panel of reference pathogenic strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis). Ten out of the most promising strains were cultured, fractionated and screened for antibacterial activity. Four of them (NC282, NC412, NC272 and NC120) showed at least an activity against reference and multidrug-resistant pathogenic strains and were found to belong to the genus Pseudoalteromonas, according to the 16S phylogenetic analysis. The NC282 strain does not belong to any described Pseudoalteromonas species and might be of interest for further chemical and biological characterization. These findings suggest that the identified strains may contribute to the discovery for new sources of antimicrobial substances to develop new therapies to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Based on new photographs of the wound, Tirard et al. (2015) tried to demonstrate that the shark involved in a fatal attack on a human in Lifou in 2007 had homodont teeth and that it sawed the femur instead of directly cutting it, promoting the hypothesis that it was a tiger shark instead of a white shark. They also contested the data provided by the direct witness of the attack about the behaviour of the shark, specific to this former species. The evidences they provide are not convincing and, based on the absence of tissue loss and description of a jumping behaviour, we still believe that it was a single bite-and-spit attack by a white shark.

Résumé : The biology and ecology of the green tropical algae Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh have been studied in the lagoons of New Caledonia (South Pacific) with a view to understanding the invasion which began in 1984 in the northwest Mediterranean Sea. A total of 1772 stations were used to establish the spatial and depth distribution of this species, which can be considered as common in New Caledonia, since it has been found in 9 % of the stations. C. taxifolia occurred mainly at depths between 10 and 30 m. Monthly sampling has shown that its growth is maximum during the southern hemisphere spring. From 180 stations randomly sampled in the southwest lagoon we obtained a mean biomass of 0.046 g afdw/m(2), which accounts for only 0.18 % of the macrophytobenthic biomass in this lagoon. Nevertheless the species constitutes a food source which is specific to the small herbivorous mollusc sacoglosses.

Résumé : The caledonian blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris is the second largest export commodity in New Caledonia. This industry is based on 19 production farms but also four hatcheries, two feed production units and two packing plants. The maximum production was reached in 2005 with 2400 tons. Supply of juveniles by hatchery is the bottle neck of the production chain because this species is not present in the natural environment. Recent problems of larval survival led some scientists to work on eco-physiology to propose adaptations of larval rearing protocol. Salinity of the rearing environment is taken as an example to study the influence of abiotic parameters on the animal physiology according to its development stage. The influence of salinity on survival and growth was evaluated at different development stages in Litopenaeus stylirostris. The study showed that ocean salinity (33-35 ppt) should be maintained during the larval stage, but after the post-larval metamorphosis, better growth could be achieved by lowering the salinity gradually to 27 ppt. This measure is now applied routinely in the Saint Vincent's hatchery and is the result of research in eco-physiology showing that the blue shrimp iso-osmotic point is around 27 ppt.
La crevette bleue calédonienne Litopenaeus stylirostris est au deuxième rang des produits exportés en Nouvelle-Calédonie. L’industrie crevetticole calédonienne est basée sur 19 fermes de production mais également 4 écloseries, 2 provendiers et 2 usines de conditionnement. La production maximale a été atteinte en 2005 avec 2400 tonnes. La fourniture de juvéniles par les écloseries est le point crucial de la chaîne de production car cette espèce n’est pas présente dans le milieu naturel. Les récents problèmes de survie larvaire ont orienté une partie de la recherche vers l’éco-physiologie en vue de proposer des adaptations du protocole d’élevage. La salinité du milieu d’élevage est prise comme exemple pour étudier l’influence d’un paramètre abiotique sur la physiologie de l’animal en fonction de son stade de développement. L’influence de la salinité sur la survie et la croissance a été évaluée aux différents stades de développement chez Litopenaeus stylirostris. L'étude a permis de montrer que la salinité océanique (33-35 ppt) devait être maintenue durant la phase larvaire mais qu'après la métamorphose en post-larve, une meilleure croissance pouvait être obtenue en abaissant la salinité progressivement à 27 ppt. Cette mesure est maintenant appliquée en routine en élevage larvaire à l'écloserie de Saint-Vincent et découle des recherches menées en éco-physiologie qui situe le point iso-osmotique de la crevette bleue autour de 27 ppt.

Résumé : The pathogenicity of two V. penaeicida strains, AM101 and KH-1, with different geographic origin, and V. nigripulchritudo strain AM102, were investigated in juvenile blue shrimp species Litopenaeus stylirostris. Alive bacteria and protein fractions (PFs) obtained from cell-free supernatants (CFS) were used in experimental challenges. Strains AM102, AM101, and KH-1 produced respectively 60, 54 and 12% mortality at 96h after infection using 104 cfu mL-1 of bacterial suspension. Exocellular toxin-like factors were evidenced in CFS from the New Caledonian strains (AM102 and AM101) but not the Japanese strain (KH-1). At 48h post injection of each CFS, mortality rates were respectively 96,98 and 5% when these strains were cultivated at 20°C, whereas only O,16 and 5% mortality rates were observed when these strains were cultivated at 30°C. Clear differences in pathogenicity between both V. penaeicida strains of distinct geographic origin (AM101 and KH-1) were thus emphasized. Protein fractions were obtained from CFS of all the strains tested in this study and cultivated at 20°C, by ammonium sulphate precipitation. Whatever the used strain, significantly higher mortalities were produced with PFs obtained with 0-40% of ammonium sulphate saturation, in respect to those produced with PFs60 and PFs80. Shrimp injected with PFs40 from strains AM102, AM101 and KH-1, and at a 20-µg org-1 dose produced respectively 100, 90 and 60% mortality 46h after the challenge. The strain AM101 showed a mediam lethal dose of approximately 5µg protein org-1 (1-1.25 µg protein g-1 body weight) 59h after injection. The PFs40 from New Caledonian strains were fond sensitive to heating and proteinase K treatments, reinforcing thus the hypothesis of their proteinaceous nature. Surprisingly, PFs40 from each bacterial strain displayed similar protein bands by SDS-PAGE suggesting that the tested strains share a common exotoxic compound regardless their distinct geographic origin or species.

Résumé : New Caledonian shrimp farming feasibility studies started in the mid-seventies. Today ca. 2000 tons of Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduced in 1978, are semi-intensively produced each year. Since fifteen years, production has been impacted by two seasonal vibriosis, the “Summer” syndrome caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo in relation to pond bottom and water column quality, and the “Winter Syndrome” caused by Vibrio penaeicida in relation to drastic temperature drops . With the ambition of elucidating processes possibly leading to mortality outbreaks in ponds, Ifremer has been conducting a research program since 2003 under the DESANS project (2003-2006) and the present DEDUCTION project, equally funded by the South and North Provinces and by the Government of New Caledonia. This program has been designed in a multidisciplinary approach integrating the suspected multifactorial origin of shrimp mortalities. Environment quality in ponds (either sediment or water column) plays a major role in the shrimp ecophysiological status, influencing sensitivity to pathogens . DEDUCTION focuses on a better knowledge of phytoplankton composition and biogeochemical fluxes at the sediment-water interface in ponds. Impact of farm discharges is also investigated. In addition, a more fundamental work is conducted to understand the pathogenicity mechanisms of these two Vibrio species but also to prevent the occurrence of viral infections through a RNA interference approach. Markers of the ecophysiological status of broodstock, larvae, post-larvae and reared animals, such as enzymes testifying from an oxidative stress, are developed. Gain of performance (resistance to pathogens and growth) were obtained on hybrids of the New Caledonian and introduced Hawaiian strains. Finally the database Stylog is exploited in view of discriminating “good” from “bad” rearings on the basis of relevant indicators.
Les études de faisabilité de l'aquaculture de crevettes ont débuté en Nouvelle-Calédonie dans les années soixante dix. Aujourd'hui environ 2000 tonnes de Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduite en 1978, sont produites chaque année de façon semi-intensive. Depuis quinze ans la production a été impactée par deux vibrioses : le syndrome d'été provoqué par Vibrio nigripulchritudo en relation avec la qualité de la tranche d'eau et des fonds de bassins et le syndrome d'hiver provoqué par Vibrio penaeicida en relation avec des chutes rapides de température. Dans le but d'élucider les processus entrainant des mortalités dans les élevages, Ifremer a conduit un programme de recherche depuis 2003 dans le cadre du projet DESANS (2003-2006) puis du présent projet DEDUCTION co-financé par les provinces Nord et Sud et le Gouvernement de la Nouvelle-Calédonie. Ce programme se construit dans une démarche multidisciplinaire intégrant les origines supposées multifactorielles des mortalités de crevettes. La qualité environnementale dans les bassins (les fonds et la colonne d'eau) joue un rôle majeur dans l'état physiologique des animaux, influençant leur sensibilité aux pathogènes. DEDUCTION se focalise sur une meilleure compréhension de la composition phytoplanctonique et des flux bio-géochimiques à l'interface eau/sédiment dans les bassins.L'impact des rejets des fermes est également étudié. En outre, un travail plus fondamental est conduit pour connaître les mécanismes de pathogénicité de ces deux espèces de Vibrio mais aussi pour prévenir les occurences d'infections virales par des approches ARN Interférence. Des marqueurs de l'état physiologique des oeufs, larves, post-larves et animaux en élevage, tels que les enzymes du stress oxydant sont utilisés.Les gains de performance (résistance aux pathogènes et croissance) sont obtenus sur des hybrides issus du croisement de la souche locale avec une souche hawaienne. Finalement la base de données STYLOG est exploitée dans le but de distinguer les bonnes des mauvaises pratiques sur la base d'indicateurs fiables.

Résumé : The ZoNeCo programme is devoted to the evaluation of the marine resources of the Economic Zone of New Caledonia. The results are essentially dependent on the quality of the seafloor mapping. From 1993 to 1996, four geological and geophysical surveys using the EM12 DUAL multibeam echosounder provided swath-mapping and acoustic imagery data of the seafloor of selected sites on the northern and southern parts of the Norfolk ridge, the Loyalty basin, around the Loyalty islands and in the westernmost part of the Economic Zone of New Caledonia. The accuracy of these documents shows the morphology of the seafloor in detail and allows rocky substratum to be differentiated from muddy bottom. It allows favorable emplacements of future exploratory fishing surveys to be determined. The benefits of swath mapping are illustrated by the Halipro 2 deep sea trawling cruise (1996) which used the swath mapping data of ZoNeCo 1 cruise (1993) on the southern prolongation of the New Caledonia mainland and Loyalty Islands.
Le programme ZoNéCo a pour objectif l'évaluation des ressources marines de la zone économique de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Les résultats du programme dépendent essentiellement de la qualité de la cartographie des fonds marins. De 1993 à 1996, au cours de quatre campagnes bathymétriques et géophysiques, une couverture bathymétrique et d'imagerie a été effectuée en utilisant le sondeur multifaisceaux EM 12 DUAL sur des sites choisis sur les segments Nord et Sud de la ride de Norfolk, dans le bassin des Loyauté, autour des îles Loyauté ainsi qu'à l'ouest de la zone économique de Nouvelle-Calédonie. La qualité des cartes obtenues permet de préciser la morphologie du fond mais aussi de différencier un substratum rocheux d'un substratum couvert par des sédiments et d'identifier les sites favorables à la réalisation de campagne de pêche exploratoire. Les bénéfices de la bathymétrie multifaisceaux sont illustrés, à partir des données de ZoNéCo 1 (1993), par la campagne de chalutage profond Halipro 2 (1996) sur la prolongation méridionale de la Grande Terre de Nouvelle-Calédonie et des îles Loyauté.

Résumé : Vibrioses are the predominant bacterial infections in marine shrimp farms. Vibrio nigripulchritudo is an emerging pathogen of the cultured shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris in New Caledonia and other regions in the Indo-Pacific. The molecular determinants of V. nigripulchritudo pathogenicity are unknown; however, molecular epidemiological studies have revealed that recent pathogenic V. nigripulchritudo isolates from New Caledonia all cluster into a monophyletic clade and contain a small plasmid, pB1067. Here, we report that a large plasmid, pA1066 (247 kb), can also serve as a marker for virulent V. nigripulchritudo, and that an ancestral version of this plasmid was likely acquired prior to other virulence-linked markers. Additionally, we demonstrate that pA1066 is critical for the full virulence of V. nigripulchritudo in several newly developed experimental models of infection. Plasmid pB1067 also contributes to virulence; only strains containing both plasmids induced the highest level of shrimp mortality. Thus, it appears that these plasmids, which are absent from non-pathogenic isolates, may be driving forces, as well as markers, for the emergence of a pathogenic lineage of V. nigripulchritudo.

Résumé : The south-west lagoon of New Caledonia is a wide semi-open coral reef lagoon bounded by an intertidal barrier reef and bisected by numerous deep inlets. This paper synthesizes findings from the 2000-2008 French National Program EC2CO-PNEC relative to the circulation and the transport of suspended particles in this lagoon. Numerical model development (hydrodynamic, fine suspended sediment transport, wind-wave, small-scale atmospheric circulation) allowed the determination of circulation patterns in the lagoon and the charting of residence time, the later of which has been recently used in a series of ecological studies. Topical studies based on field measurements permitted the parameterisation of wave set-up induced by the swell breaking on the reef barrier and the validation of a wind-wave model in a fetch-limited environment. The analysis of spatial and temporal variability of suspended matter concentration over short and long time-scales, the measurement of grain size distribution and the density of suspended matter (1.27 kg 1(-1)), and the estimation of erodibility of heterogeneous (sand/mud, terrigenous/biogenic) soft bottoms was also conducted. Aggregates were shown to be more abundant near or around reefs and a possible biological influence on this aggregation is discussed. Optical measurements enabled the quantification of suspended matter either in situ (monochromatic measurements) or remotely (surface spectral measurements and satellite observations) and provided indirect calibration and validation of a suspended sediment transport model. The processes that warrant further investigation in order to improve our knowledge of circulation and suspended sediment transport in the New Caledonia lagoon as well as in other coral reef areas are discussed, as are the relevance and reliability of the numerical models for this endeavour.

Résumé : In New Caledonia, there is no indigenous shrimp species for commercial aquaculture and it is necessary to control the complete cycle in captivity. Since 1973 and the creation of the Station d'Aquaculture de Saint-Vincent (S.A.S.V.), a joint project between IFREMER, France-Aquaculture and the territory of New Caledonia, nine species have been tested and for one of these, P. stylirostris , (introduced in 1980), we are now in a commercial scale production with the tenth generation obtained in captivity.

Résumé : Estimating diversity and abundance of fish is fundamental for the understanding of community structure and dynamics of coral reefs. Observations are generally gathered using Underwater Visual Census (UVC). These informations can also be collected by underwater video techniques involving no diver and allowing a high spatial and temporal coverage. The first part of this PhD thesis is a review of publications using underwater video techniques between 1952 and 2012. The second part present two rotating video systems used to study the diversity of ichthyofauna and habitats in the lagoon of New Caledonia: the STAVIRO (for "STAtion VIdeo ROtative") and the MICADO (for "Module d’Imagerie Côtier, Autonome pour le Développement de l’Observation sous-marine"). The third part of this work is a comparison of these techniques with UVCs and an analysis of the “observer effect” for the rotating video techniques. The comparison between rotating video systems and UVC showed that: (i) fish community data collected by UVC and by STAVIRO differed significantly; (ii) species richness and density of large species were not significantly different between techniques; (iii) species richness and density of small species were higher for UVC; (iv) density of fished species was higher for STAVIRO; and (v) only UVC detected significant differences in fish assemblages structure across reef type. The comparison of fish counts obtained from the same videos by different observers showed that for a defined list of species, estimates of species richness and total abundance can be considered as similar between observers with sufficient experiences (> 6 months). The last part of this PhD is an application of rotating video techniques to the study of daily temporal variations of the ichthyofauna. Daily variations were observed depending on the time of day and the tidal state and typical patterns of variations have been described for some species groups. The outcomes of this work bring original insights of new techniques complementary to traditional techniques in order to enhance our understanding of the functioning and dynamic of coral reef.
L’estimation de la diversité et de l’abondance des espèces de poissons est fondamentale pour comprendre la structure des communautés et la dynamique des récifs coralliens. Les observations sont généralement obtenues par des recensements visuels en scaphandre autonome (UVC). Ces informations peuvent également être obtenues de manière originale grâce aux observations issues des techniques vidéo sous-marines modernes sans plongeur qui permettent des couvertures spatiales et temporelles accrues. La première phase de ce travail de thèse synthétise l’ensemble des travaux ayant été effectués avec des techniques vidéo entre 1952 et 2012. La seconde phase, présente deux systèmes vidéo rotatifs complémentaires, utilisés pour étudier la diversité de l’ichtyofaune et des habitats marins dans le lagon de Nouvelle-Calédonie : le STAVIRO (pour « STAtion VIdéo ROtative ») et le MICADO (pour « Module d’Imagerie Côtier, Autonome pour le Développement de l’Observation sous-marine »). La troisième phase de ce travail consiste à comparer ces systèmes vidéo aux UVC puis à examiner l’effet « observateur » inhérent aux techniques vidéo rotatives. Il résulte de cette étude que : (i) les observations des communautés de poissons par UVC et STAVIRO différaient significativement, (ii) la richesse spécifique et la densité des espèces de grande taille n'étaient pas significativement différentes entre les techniques, (iii) la diversité et la densité des espèces de petite taille étaient plus élevés avec les UVC; (iv) la densité des espèces pêchées était plus élevée avec les STAVIRO et (v) seuls les UVC ont détecté des différences de structure des assemblages en fonction du type de récif. L’étude de l’effet « observateur » a montré que sur une liste d’espèces définie, les dénombrements et les identifications des individus peuvent être considérées comme similaires entre observateurs ayant une expérience suffisante (> 6 mois). La dernière phase de ce travail a permis d’appliquer la technique MICADO à l’étude des variations temporelles de l’ichtyofaune d’un site corallien à l’échelle de la journée. Elle a permis de mettre en évidence des variations cycliques journalières en fonction de l’heure et de la marée et des « profils type » de variations ont pu être identifiés pour certains groupes d’espèces. Ce travail de thèse permet ainsi de participer au développement de nouvelles techniques d’observations complémentaires des techniques traditionnelles afin d’enrichir les connaissances du fonctionnement et de la dynamique des écosystèmes coralliens.

Résumé : P>The distribution of the archaeal communities in deep subseafloor sediments [0-36 m below the seafloor (mbsf)] from the New Caledonia and Fairway Basins was investigated using DNA- and RNA-derived 16S rRNA clone libraries, functional genes and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). A new method, Co-Migration DGGE (CM-DGGE), was developed to access selectively the active archaeal diversity. Prokaryotic cell abundances at the open-ocean sites were on average similar to 3.5 times lower than at a site under terrestrial influence. The sediment surface archaeal community (0-1.5 mbsf) was characterized by active Marine Group 1 (MG-1) Archaea that co-occurred with ammonia monooxygenase gene (amoA) sequences affiliated to a group of uncultured sedimentary Crenarchaeota. However, the anoxic subsurface methane-poor sediments (below 1.5 mbsf) were dominated by less active archaeal communities, such as the Thermoplasmatales, Marine Benthic Group D and other lineages probably involved in the methane cycle (Methanosarcinales, ANME-2 and DSAG/MBG-B). Moreover, the archaeal diversity of some sediment layers was restricted to only one lineage (Uncultured Euryarchaeota, DHVE6, MBG-B, MG-1 and SAGMEG). Sequences forming two clusters within the Thermococcales order were also present in these cold subseafloor sediments, suggesting that these uncultured putative thermophilic archaeal communities might have originated from a different environment. This study shows a transition between surface and subsurface sediment archaeal communities.

Résumé : In New Caledonia, shrimp hatcheries are confronted with mass mortality in the larval stages, a phenomenon poorly understood as no specific causative agent has been identified. This has resulted in an excessive use of prophylactic antibiotics, although their adverse effects in aquaculture are notorious. The present work was thus aimed at selecting potential probiotic strains for penaeid hatcheries. From a pool of more than 400 marine bacterial isolates sampled from the local marine environment seven strains exhibited in vitro antagonistic activity towards Vibrio harveyi. These isolates were characterized both phenotypically and genotypically using a biochemical approach and 16S rDNA sequencing. Six out of these seven strains were found to belong to the genus Pseudoalteromonas, the last one belonging to the Vibrionaceae family and related to the Harveyi clade. Selected probiotic candidates were individually tested for antagonistic activities in vitro using a green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labelled transconjugant of V. harveyi and for inherent pathogenicity towards cultured shrimp larvae at two different developmental stages. This approach enabled rapid processing and selection of candidates to be tested in our experimental hatchery. Four different experiments were conducted to test candidate strains either alone or in combination. Repeated trials showed that postlarval survival was significantly improved by adding the strain NC201 individually to the rearing water compared to unchallenged controls. The analysis of immune-related gene expressions showed that the Litsty PEN3 transcript abundance of larvae was significantly increased after being reared in probiotic-containing water; however no significant difference in lysozyme gene expression was recorded in this study. Together, these results open new insights into the use of these strains as potential substitutes to antibiotherapy in shrimp larval rearing in New Caledonia.

Résumé : During the Echolag cruise (13 February-8 March 2007), the effect of 16-30 knot trade winds on abundance, community structure and dynamics of phytoplankton was investigated in the southern part of the New Caledonian coral reefs and surrounding oceanic waters. In this area, the coral reefs form two horn-like structures (hereinafter referred to as 'horn reefs'), oriented south-east, and separated by a relatively deep valley. Three repeated samplings at one week intervals of a 32 station array showed that trade winds induce surface water cooling and significant enrichment of mid- and bottom waters above the reef shelf. This enrichment appeared as the result of a general rise of the oceanic thermocline and nitracline due to the combination of trade winds and tidally-generated internal waves between the horn reefs. It was accompanied by a factor of 1.5 and 2.3 mean increase for the chlorophyll concentration and picoplankton-nanoplankton cell number, respectively. From diel variations of in vivo chlorophyll a fluorescence and hourly sampling, phytoplankton gross growth rate was estimated to be 1-1.35 divisions per day and was quasi balanced with phytoplankton mortality for a 24 h period.

This study assessed the anthropometric and physiological characteristics of elite Melanesian futsal players in order to determine the best performance predictors. Physiological parameters of performance were measured in 14 Melanesian (MEL-G, 24.4±4.4 yrs) and 8 Caucasian (NMEL-G, 22.9±4.9) elite futsal players, using tests of jump-and-reach (CMJ), agility (T-Test), repeated sprint ability (RSA), RSA with change-of-direction (RSA-COD), sprints with 5 m, 10 m, 15 m, and 30 m lap times, and aerobic fitness with the 30-15 intermittent fitness test (30-15 IFT). The anthropometric data revealed significantly lower height for MEL-G compared with NMEL-G: 1.73±0.05 and 1.80±0.08 m, respectively; P=0.05. The CMJ was significantly higher for MEL-G than NMEL-G: 50.4±5.9 and 45.2±4.3 cm, respectively; P=0.05. T-Test times were significantly lower for MEL-G than NMEL-G: 10.47±0.58 and 11.01±0.64 seconds, respectively; P=0.05. MEL-G height was significantly related to CMJ (r=0.706, P=0.01), CMJpeakP (r=0.709, P=0.01) and T-Test (r=0.589, P=0.02). No significant between-group differences were observed for sprint tests or 30-15 IFT, including heart rate and estimated VO2max. Between groups, the percentage decrement (%Dec) in RSA-COD was significantly lower in MEL-G than NMEL-G (P=0.05), although no significant difference was noted between RSA and RSA-COD. Within groups, no significant difference was observed between %Dec in RSA or RSA-COD; P=0.697. This study presents specific anthropometric (significantly lower height) and physiological (significantly greater agility) reference values in Melanesians, which, taken together, might help coaches and physical fitness trainers to optimize elite futsal training and talent identification in Oceania.

Résumé : We present new analytical data from lavas and associated rocks dredged and/or drilled from the South Fiji Basin, Northland Plateau, Colville Ridge and Havre Trough. These results provide much-needed ground truth about the geology, age and tectonic evolution of the Cenozoic submarine ridges and basins between the active intraoceanic Tonga–Kermadec arc, and rifted continental borderlands of New Zealand, the Norfolk Ridge and New Caledonia. Key results from this study include: (1) Ar–Ar dates on Minerva Abyssal Plain oceanic crust suggest that the ages of magnetic anomalies in the South Fiji Basin have been overestimated by earlier workers; (2) subduction-related lavas are widespread across the region, are not presently organised into arc-like chains, and cluster in the age range 22–18 Ma (Early Miocene); (3) the oldest subduction-related lavas occur in the western part of the region (32–26 Ma: Norfolk and Three Kings Ridge); (4) shoshonites, interpreted as rifted arc lavas, were erupted in a narrow 20–21 Ma interval over a wide area. Put together, these results indicate high magmatic flux and large and rapid horizontal tectonic translations and basin opening from 18–23 Ma in the region immediately north of New Zealand. We explain the Miocene tectonomagmatic development of the region by a model of rapid rollback of a single, east-facing Pacific arc–trench system that became established after Northland Allochthon emplacement. Critical testing of this, versus other, tectonic models must await drilling and dating of thus-far unsampled Kupe Abyssal Plain crust.

Résumé : Penaeus stylirostris shrimp imported from Hawaii for a genetic program and kept at the Saint-Vincent research facility had progressively developed a high sensitivity to IHHNV, the etiological agent of the Infectious, Hypodermic, and Hematopoietic Necrosis. Fears were that the virus could not only be transferred to their offspring, but also that the New Caledonian strain of Penaeus stylirostris, so far considered as resistant, could become sensitive by an off balance of its hosts/pathogen equilibrium. In October 2008, a joint decision between Uprac (shimp owner), Davar (New Caledonian Animal Health Authority) and Ifremer (scientific partner) was taken to terminate all pure breed and hybrid Hawaiian populations remaining in the ponds, and to implement an intensive fallowing protocol, and controlled restocking. IHHNV was also suspected to trouble experiments carried out in the research facility (mortalities, deformities, slow growth), thus affecting research programs. Difficulties pointed out by IHHNV have triggered since 2008 some awareness on biosecurity issues at some level of the New Caledonian shrimp industry. At the St-Vincent research station, it led to a risk assessment and implementation of biosecurity procedures (fallowing, propagation, grow out and use of screened animals) which minimizes the risk of expression of IHHNV. The use of a brand new hatchery building on site also helped in resetting routine hygiene procedures during production and in controlling incoming and outgoing items (shrimp, water, feed, personnel, equipment, pests and wastes). IHHNV has not been detected on analysed samples since then nor have any symptoms been found during experimental or broodstock growout. Keeping this control alive is considered as a useful tool to lower the risk of potential health threats, to get a better understanding in case of an outbreak, and to increase the reliability of experimental results.
Les crevettes originaires d’Hawaii et conservées au LEAD St-Vincent, dans le cadre du programme d’introduction de variabilité génétique dans le cheptel Calédonien, ont progressivement montré une sensibilité importante au virus IHHNV, agent de la Nécrose Hypodermale et Hématopoïétique Infectieuse (mortalité, croissance ralentie, déformations). Les risques d’une transmission génétique de cette sensibilité à leur descendance à moyen terme, et de son développement par rupture de l’équilibre hôte/pathogène sur la souche dite « Calédonienne » jusqu’alors considérée comme résistante à l’IHHN, ont conduit à partir d’octobre 2008, avec l’accord et l’appui de l’UPRAC et de la DAVAR, à la suppression des animaux hawaiiens ou hybrides encore présents dans les bassins de terre du LEAD St-Vincent, au vide sanitaire de ces derniers, et au repeuplement contrôlé du site. D’autre part, le virus IHHN est soupçonné d’avoir pu affecter les animaux utilisés dans les expérimentations menées au LEAD-St-Vincent (mortalités, déformations, croissance réduite), influençant donc potentiellement leur bon déroulement et celui des programmes de recherches. Les obstacles soulevés par l’expression du virus IHHN ont donc initié depuis 2008 une prise de conscience et la mise en place de démarches de biosécurité dans certains points de la filière. A la station de St-Vincent, cette démarche s’est traduite par une identification/évaluation des risques et l’application de mesures (vide sanitaire, reproduction, élevage et utilisation des animaux contrôlés) chacune dotée de procédures qui regroupées, minimisent le risque d’introduction et de dissémination de l’IHHNV. La prise en main de la nouvelle structure d’écloserie sur le site de la SASV a également été mise à profit pour revoir les procédures d’hygiène de routine dans la conduite des productions et dans le contrôle des flux intrants et sortants (animaux, eau, aliments, personnel, équipement, nuisibles, déchets). Aucune détection d’IHHNV sur les échantillons prélevés n’a depuis été observée, de même qu’aucun symptôme de l’expression de cette maladie sur les animaux en élevage sur le site de Saint-Vincent. La poursuite de ces mesures est envisagée comme un outil d’aide à la minimisation des problèmes potentiels, à leur compréhension en cas d’apparition, et à la fiabilisation des résultats.

Our ability to decipher the mechanisms behind metamorphic transformation processes depends in a major way on the extent to which crystallographic and microstructural information is transferred from one stage to another. Within the Leka Ophiolite Complex in the Central Norwegian Caledonides, prograde olivine veins that formed by dehydration of serpentinite veins in dunites exhibit a characteristic distribution of microstructures: The outer part of the veins comprises coarse-grained olivine that forms an unusual, brick-like microstructure. The inner part of the veins, surrounding a central fault, is composed of fine-grained olivine. Where the fault movement included a dilational component, optically clear, equant olivine occurs in the centre. Electron backscatter diffraction mapping reveals that the vein olivine has inherited its crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) from the olivine in the porphyroclastic host rock; however, misorientation is weaker and associated to different rotation axes. We propose that prograde olivine grew epitaxially on relics of mantle olivine and thereby acquired its CPO. Growth towards pre-existing microfractures along which serpentinisation had occurred led to straight grain boundaries and a brick-like microstructure in the veins. When dehydration embrittlement induced slip, a strong strain localisation on discrete fault planes prevented distortion of the CPO due to cataclastic deformation; grain size reduction did not significantly modify the olivine CPO. This illustrates how a CPO can be preserved though an entire metamorphic cycle, including hydration, dehydration, and deformation processes, and that the CPO and the microstructures (e.g. grain shape) of one phase do not necessarily record the same event.
