Their populations are, however, characterized by large biomass fluctuations strongly affecting fisheries. The fishing gears and methods used to capture small pelagics have evolved to exploit the highly developed shoaling behavior of these species. Hence, faced to modern fishing this gregarious behavior becomes a disadvantage for fish. Fish behavior may be affected by environmental conditions and by fishing, at the same time that behavior impacts fishing. In this study, we seek to characterize the aggregative systems of small pelagic fishes inhabiting the Bay of Biscay by analyzing "acoustic images", defined as the group of echoes (planktonic layers, shoals, isolated targets) detected on a transect section of a given length. We analyzed the species composition, the spatial distribution and the evolution over time of acoustic images. We also studied the hydrological conditions of the bay, as well as the small pelagics French fishery in order to look for correlations between hydrology, commercial catch and fish aggregation patterns observed by acoustics. We observed the same species or group of species forming different types of aggregation according to habitat. Conversely, the same type of aggregation, associated with a particular habitat, can be produced by different species. The most notorious change observed during the studied period relates to small clupeoids aggregations in the vicinity of the Gironde estuary, whose structure evolved toward a greater fragmentation of shoals (a large number of small size detections) since 2000. Concerning commercial catches, pelagic trawlers fishing in pairs mainly seek for anchovy in the coastal areas, single pelagic trawlers capture mackerel and horse mackerel in deeper waters while purse seiners target mostly sardine near their fishing ports. Because of the coarse spatial resolution of commercial fishing data and the effect of the application of an international fisheries agreement limiting the fishing activity of French pelagic trawlers during spring, only small correlations between captures and types of aggregation were observed. In this study, mitochondrial sequences and microsatellite loci were analysed using traditional population genetic approaches together with Bayesian dating and the more recent approximate Bayesian computation scenario testing. The genetic structure and demographic history of a commercial fish, the black scorpionfish, Scorpaena porcus, was investigated throughout the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The results suggest that the species recently underwent population expansions, in both seas, likely concomitant with the warming period following the Last Glacial Maximum, 20 000 years ago. A weak contemporaneous genetic differentiation was identified between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. However, the genetic diversity was similar for populations of the two seas, suggesting a high number of colonizers entered the Black Sea during the interglacial period and/or the presence of a refugial population in the Black Sea during the glacial period. Finally, within seas, an east/west genetic differentiation in the Adriatic seems to prevail, whereas the Black Sea does not show any structured spatial genetic pattern of its population. Overall, these results suggest that the Black Sea is not that isolated from the Mediterranean, and both seas revealed similar evolutionary patterns related to climate change and changes in sea level. Patterns of Fish Connectivity between a Marine Protected Area and Surrounding Fished Areas Auteur(s) : Sahyoun, Rita Guidetti, Paolo Franco, Antonio, Planes, Serge Auteurs secondaires : Centre de recherches insulaires et observatoire de l'environnement (CRIOBE) ; Université de Perpignan Via Domitia (UPVD) - École pratique des hautes études (EPHE) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Ecosystèmes Côtiers Marins et Réponses aux Stress (ECOMERS) ; Université Nice Sophia Antipolis (UNS) ; Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) Laboratoire d'Excellence CORAIL (LabEX CORAIL) ; Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) - École pratique des hautes études (EPHE) - Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER) - Université de la Réunion (UR) - Université de la Polynésie Française (UPF) - Université de Nouvelle Calédonie - Institut d'écologie et environnement Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Public Library of Science Résumé : International audience Patterns of connectivity and self-recruitment are recognized as key factors shaping the dynamics of marine populations. Connectivity is also essential for maintaining and restoring natural ecological processes with genetic diversity contributing to the adaptation and persistence of any species in the face of global disturbances. Estimates of connectivity are crucial to inform the design of both marine protected areas (MPAs) and MPA networks. Among several approaches, genetic structure is frequently used as a proxy for patterns of connectivity. Using 8 microsatellite loci, we investigated genetic structure of the two-banded sea bream Diplodus vulgaris, a coastal fish that is both commercially and ecologically important. Adults were sampled in 7 locations (stretches of coastline approximately 8 km long) and juveniles in 14 sites (~100 to 200 m of coastline) along 200 km of the Apulian Adriatic coast (SW Adri-atic Sea), within and outside an MPA (Torre Guaceto MPA, Italy). Our study found similar genetic diversity indices for both the MPA and the surrounding fished areas. An overall lack of genetic structure among samples suggests high gene flow (i.e. connectivity) across a scale of at least 200 km. However, some local genetic divergences found in two locations demonstrate some heterogeneity in processes renewing the population along the Apulian Adriatic coast. Furthermore, two sites appeared genetically divergent, reinforcing our observations within the genetic makeup of adults and confirming heterogeneity in early stage genetics that can come from either different supply populations or from chaotic genetic patchiness occurring under temporal variation in recruitment and in the reproductive success. While the specific role of the MPA is not entirely known in this case, these results confirm the presence of regional processes and the key role of connectivity in maintaining the local population supply. Auteur(s) : Paulmier, Gerard Gervain, Paul Résumé : The principal objective of the work carried out in the deep waters adjoining the island shelf around Martinique between July 1991 and april 1992 was to establish an initial inventory of potentially exploitable deep benthic resources. The cylindrical lobster pot used during fishing experiments allowed the catch of a varied carcinological marine organisms of which six species at least have economic interest : 5 species of shrimp all belonging to the sub-order of Caridea of the Pandalidae family : Plesionika edwardsi, P. (macropoda) polyacanthomerus, P.laevis, Heterocarpus ensifer and H.laevigatus, and one species of prawn of the Nephropidae family : Eunephrops cadenasi. The yields, compared to those of commercial fishermen, were medium or good for Plesionika edwardsi and P. (macropoda) polyacanthomerus between depths of 200 - 300 metres ; for Plesionika laevis and Eunephrops cadenasi in the vicinity 500 metres ; for Heterocarpus laevigatus below 700 metres. The species Heterocarpus ensifer , of which the vertical distribution is very spread out from 170 to 600 metres, seems divided into two populations which provide good yields about 300 metres and below of 450 mètres. Data on the environment and the biology of the species where also established, especially on growth and breeding. For example growth of the pandalids is relatively rapid and their life cycle rather short, between three and four or five years according to the species. At least 2 principal egg-laying seasons occur in the annual cycle. Information is given on the isopoda of the family of Cirolanidae, Bathynomus giganteus, which could eventually, under certain conditions, become of interest to the fishermen. A cost-benefit analysis of improving trawl selectivity in the case of discards: The Nephrops norvegicus fishery in the Bay of Biscay Auteur(s) : Macher, Claire Guyader, Olivier Talidec, Catherine Bertignac, Michel Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The Nephrops trawl fishery is one of the most important fisheries in the Bay of Biscay. The fishery management essentially relies on conservation measures, a total at I owed catch (TAC) for Nephrops together with a mini mum landing size (MLS) and minimum trawl mesh size (70 mm stretched mesh). These measures have failed to prevent high discard levels of many species that characterize the fishery. Nephrops trawlers thus discard about half of their Nephrops catches in numbers (a third in weight) of which only 30% survive. Nephrops discards mainly occur in younger Nephrops age groups below the MLS. This is a waste for the already overexploited Nephrops stock as well as for the fleet. Based on a bio-economic simulation model, the paper analyses the consequences of several scenarios of improving Nephrops selectivity. The potential impacts of these scenarios on Nephrops biomass, landings, discards and economic indicators (e.g. rent) are examined and a cost-benefit analysis of each scenario is carried out. We show that a better exploitation pattern would benefit fisheries that have high level of discards. Reducing non-commercial Nephrops discards leads to positive net present values of rent with better value realized from the production potential and limited short-term losses for the fishing units. By taking account of the economic dynamics of increasing effort however, we show that selectivity measures are insufficient. Regulating access to the fishery is also required to ensure the sustainability of the fishery and a better exploitation of the production potential. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. In the aim of diversification for small fisheries, a survey has been conducted in 2000 by the Regional Fisheries Committee and the French Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer) between 200 and 600 m deep, in the West of Reunion Island. Potential commercial fish stocks have been found out. Numerous professional and recreational fishermen have bought equipment in order to exploit this resource (electric winches). But deep demersal fish is a fragile resource due mainly to low growth and late sexual maturation. Face to this increasing pressure upon a fragile resource, a new survey has been carried out by Ifremer in 2011, with use of the same fishing sites, material and method than in 2000. Results displayed in this report are compared to those of 2000. It turned out that yields of commercial species have decreased in an alarming way (over 90%) together with the fish sizes, data which exhibit a stock overfishing. The only catches of the non commercial species (small squale "Zépine" Squalus megalops) appear comparable to 2000. This survey has now to be confirmed all around Reunion Island. Crustaces profonds captures aux casiers aux Antilles françaises - 1996 Auteur(s) : Paulmier, Gerard Résumé : For several years the fishermen of the West Indies have directed their activities towards new fishing grounds, notably the bathyales zones adjacent to island plateaux up to approximately 1000 metres in depth. Explorations carried out since 1989 have shown that diverse crustacean populations could be exploited. However, populations and exploitable stocks are not well known. The use of crustaceans traps as a fishing technique permits the capture of shellfish, shrimps and prawns of which at least six species could have commercial interest. The main objective of this work is do draw up an inventory of the principal commercial species as well as the accompanying species belonging to the subordres Decapoda macrura, anomura, brachyura and to the orders Isopoda and Amphipoda. It is intended for fishermen and other socio-professionals of the fishing industry. It should enable them to identify and name these previously unexploited varieties of Crustacea to facilitate their sale in local markets. Consequently, we assessed themost commonly used species to establish their growth and size profiles, their cytomorphological, biochemical, biomolecular identification as well as their cytometer signs, and also their ability to grow under extreme conditions of temperature and salinity.
This work aimed at matching the conformity of the strains used in Argenton (dispatched to most of the French commercial hatcheries) to those of a referenced culture collection. A previous screening preceded this study, because of the 45 species and/or clones held originally, Argenton kept no more than 15 species. As most of the latter are also represented in referenced collection, our strains are therefore correctly identified. On the other hand, the combination of several approaches (characteristic of growth and size, cytomorphological description, establishment of biochemical and biomolecular profiles) to discriminate the different species was broadly successful. Nevertheless, flow cytometer measurements were extremely variable from sample to sample, dueto their high sensitivity to the microalga's physiological state.
Accordingly, we have developed a method of identification which could be transferred at a national or international level, to the Institutions in charge of microalgae collections. Furthermore, we achieved relevant data to establish an identity card for each of the microalgae suitable for mollusc hatcheries. A review: pelagic fishes at petroleum platforms in the Northern Gulf of Mexico; diversity, interrelationships, and perspective Auteur(s) : Franks, J Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Approximately 4,000 petroleum (oil and gas) platforms exist in the northern Gulf of Mexico and form one of the world's most extensive de facto artificial reef systems. Collectively, these structures may comprise one of the largest fad (Fish Aggregating Device) arrays in the world, attracting surface and midwater pelagic fishes. The diverse composition of pelagic fish fauna at ngom platforms is described and includes valued species such as Thunnus albacares, Thunnus atlanticus, Coryphaena hippurus, Acanthocybium solandri, Rachycentron canadum, Seriola dumerili, Scomberomorus cavalla, and Decapterus punctatus. Petroleum platforms influence pelagic fishery resources and are an important component of the Gulf's commercial and recreational fishing industries. Reviewed literature revealed a sparsity of fundamental knowledge of densities, temporal and spatial occurrence, and fishing effort/catch rates of pelagic fishes at platforms. The role of Gulf petroleum platforms "as fads" is examined, possible mechanisms for aggregation are reviewed, and a synopsis of the author's preliminary findings on life history aspects of A. solandri and R. canadum from platforms is presented. It is proposed that platforms provide opportunities for the study of pelagic species to better understand the life history, ecology, behaviour, and habitat requirements of pelagic fishery resources in the Gulf of Mexico. Apport d'un programme de génétique à une filière de production aquacole : l'exemple de l'ostréiculture Auteur(s) : Lapegue, Sylvie Bedier, Edouard Goyard, Emmanuel Degremont, Lionel Baud, Jean-pierre Gerard, Andre Goulletquer, Philippe Boudry, Pierre Éditeur(s) : Styli 2003. Trente ans de crevetticulture en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Nouméa - Koné, 2-6 juin 2003. 2004. Gorarant C, Harache Y, Herbland A, Mugnier C. Ed. Ifremer, Actes de Colloque, n°38, pp.113-120 Résumé : Two oyster species are currently present along the French coasts : the indigenous European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis), and the Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas), that has been introduced from Japan since the beginning of the 70ies. The flat oyster successively suffered from two protozoan diseases during the 60ies and its production decreased from 20 000 tons/year by that time to 1 500 tons/year nowadays. Consequently, the oyster production is principally (99%) based upon the Pacific oyster species with approximately 150 000 tons/year among which 90% are grown from the natural spat. However, the hatchery production of this species is developing and was estimated to 400 to 800 millions spat in 2002. Moreover, strengthened relationships between IFREMER and the 5 commercial hatcheries, that all joined the SYSAAF (Union of the French poultry, shellfish and fish farming selectors), allow to plan for new genetic breeding programs. At the end of the 80ies, IFREMER initiated a genetic breeding program for the resistance of the European flat oyster to the bonamiosis, and obtained strains more tolerant to this disease. After two generations of massal selection, molecular markers had identified a reduced genetic basis in this program. It was then reoriented to an intra-familial selection. However, we were confronted to a zootechnic problem to manage such a scheme and we compromised by an intra-cohorts of families selection scheme managed using molecular markers. The program has now reached the transfer level with experimentation at a professional scale. Concerning the Pacific cupped oyster, and in parallel with the obtaining and the study of polyploids, performance of different Asian cupped oyster strains were compared to the one introduced in France thirty years ago and currently suffering from summer mortalities. The local strain exhibited better performance, certainly based upon a good local adaptation. In other respects, although early growth is a relevant criteria for selection for growth to commercial stage, it is not to be privileged in the context of an oyster producing region with a limited food availability. Contrary, the spat summer mortality became a priority for numerous teams (genetic, physiology, pathology, ecology,...) joined in the MOREST program. The first results showed important survival differences between fullsib and halsib families. They indicate a genetic determinism to this character "survival" and promote for its selection. Maturation and spawning in captivity of penaeid shrimps Auteur(s) : Aquacop, Aquacop Éditeur(s) : Proceedings of the 6 th Annual Meeting of World Mariculture Society Résumé : As no indigenous species of commercial penaeid shrimp live in the waters of French Po1ynesia, the pre1iminary step in deve10ping shrimp aquaculture was to obtain maturation and spawning in captivity. Five species have been investigated. Wi1d-caught juveni1es from the New Ca1edonia 1agoon (f. merguiensis, f. semisulcatus, ~. ensis) and post1arvae from the Ga1veston NMFS 1aboratory (P. aztecus) and Fujinaga Institute (f. japonicus) have been used to-obtain adu1t stock. Shrimps are reared in circu1ar tanks of 12 m3 with a continuous water circulation through a coral sand bed. Rate of exchange is from 1 to 3 times a day. Throughout the year water temperature is between 25 and 29 C, sa1inity around 34.5 ppt, and pH 8.2. Solar energy is reduced by shade covers. Artificial pellets of different composition are given as food. In these conditions we have obtained: 1) about 1,000 spawnings and two generations in captivity from September 1973 to September 1974 with f. merguiensis; 2) spawnings of ~. ensis in 1973; 3) four spawnings of f. japonicus in September 1974; 4) about 20 spawnings of P. aztecus, but only aftcr removing one eyestalk; 5) maturation signs in P. semizulcatus but no spawning. Experiments on larval rearing and growth of these species are in progress. Les peches maritimes : complexes biogeographiques de production et provinces halieutiques Auteur(s) : Rass, Théodore S. Carre, François Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : The first part describes the evolution of the world sea fisheries from 1950 to 1977 and their present state : a decline of the growing rate of the catches, their biological structure and their distribution in the oceans according to the depth, the distance from the continent and the latitude. Then the biogeographical fishery complexes are defined, being characterized by assemblages of commercially valuable and actually caught species. These complexes are arranged according to the latitude with sometimes longitudinal subdivisions. At last with technical and economical criteria, such as the yield of the fisheries, the finality of the catches and the conditions of the exploitation which add themselves to the biogeographical complexes, the authors attempt to single out geographical fishing provinces. What will be the response of the tropical rainforest to temperature rising ans pluviometry changes ? In 2013 the intergovernmental panel on climate change (ipcc) publishes its fifth report. This report underlines that an increase of temperature and a strengthening of drought and extreme rainfall are expected in tropical regions. This work was made in this context of climate changes, and aimed to study the response of the rainforest to predicted climate changes. To do this, i used the data from the study site of Paracou French Guiana to build an individual based dynamics model based on the functional traits of trees. This model was first applied to species with a commercial interest in French Guiana, in natural and logged forest and adding a water stress index as predictor. Water stress decreases growth and increases mortality, while logging had the opposite effect. The model was then applied to the community in natural forest for identifying potential climate drivers and impacted processes. Growth is impacted by the water stress and temperature and mortality is imp acted by the water stress and the total rainfall. These results allowed us to build a climate dependent model of forest dynamics and to run simulations of the evolution of a community under different scenarios for the next century. Simulations showed a decrease of growth and a small decrease of mortality. This resulted in a substantial decrease of basal area, squared diameter and fresh biomass. http://www.theses.fr/2014AGUY0802/document | Partager |
Shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Galinie, C Éditeur(s) : Actes de colloques Ifremer, Tahiti, French Polynesia, 20 Feb - 4 Mar 1989, n°9, chap. 5, pp.45-50 Résumé : In New Caledonia, there is no indigenous shrimp species for commercial aquaculture and it is necessary to control the complete cycle in captivity. Since 1973 and the creation of the Station d'Aquaculture de Saint-Vincent (S.A.S.V.), a joint project between IFREMER, France-Aquaculture and the territory of New Caledonia, nine species have been tested and for one of these, P. stylirostris , (introduced in 1980), we are now in a commercial scale production with the tenth generation obtained in captivity. Ifremer. Brest [ACTES COLLOQ. IFREMER.]. 1988 Résumé : Since nearly twenty years, world exploitation of crustaceans increases from 1,263,000 tons in 1968 to 3,419,000 tons in 1985, overcoming the predictions of 1970 by more than one million tons. Penaeid prawns fisheries experienced a very fast development. The krill resource proved to be practically commercially unworkable. By now, the major crustaceans stocks appear fully exploited. During the same period, penaeid aquaculture experienced a fast growth, which should continue in the near future. Trans-Atlantic distribution of a mangrove oyster species revealed by 16S mtDNA and karyological analyses Auteur(s) : Lapegue, Sylvie Boutet, Isabelle Leitao, Alexandra Heurtebise, Serge Garcia, P Thiriot Quievreux, C Boudry, Pierre Résumé : Three species of man.-rove oysters, Crassostrea rhizophorae, C. brasiliana, and C. gasar, have been described along the Atlantic shores of South America and Africa. Because the distribution of these molluscs is of great biological and commercial interest, their taxonomy and distribution deserve further clarification. Therefore, 15 populations were sampled from both continents. Their 16S mitochondrial polymorphism was studied by sequencing and PCR-RFLP analysis. Two haplotypes were identified. Haplotype a was the only one observed in Africa, but it was also observed in South America together with haplotype b. Because C. gasar is the only mangrove oyster identified on the west coast of Africa, haplotype a was attributed to this species, which has thus been shown to occur in South America. Haplotype b is attributed to C. rhizophorae. The karyotypes of specimens of C. gasar, from Africa and from South America, were very similar, and both species were observed at the same location in Brazil. The occurrence of C. gasar in South America adds a third species-in addition to C rhizophorae and C. brasiliana-to the list of species present along these coasts. The predominant surface circulation patterns in this part of the Atlantic Ocean favor the hypothesis that C. gasar was transported from Africa to America. Finally, a phylogenetic tree built with seven 16S sequences from Crassostrea and Saccostrea species showed that C. gasar is intermediate between the American Crassostrea species (C virginica and C. rhizophorae) and the Asian species (C. gigas and C ariakensis). Campagne de prospection de poissons démersaux profonds réalisée autour de La Réunion en 2011 Auteur(s) : Fleury, Pierre-gildas Evano, Hugues Le Ru, Loic Résumé : Since 2000, the exploitation of the deep demersal fish (200-700 m) with the use of electric winches has been increasing in Reunion island ; and this has needed a new appraisal of yields (CPUE) and individual fish sizes, as indicators of the state of the fish stocks. A first survey has been carried out at the first half of 2011, in order to set up the comparison with a previous survey in 2000 on the West coast of Reunion island. Drops of yields and sizes could be pointed out, attesting the overexploitation of the commercial species (Fleury et al 2011). This present report displays the results of a second campaign, carried out in the second half of 2011 all around the island. 32 fishing trips have been conducted which have permitted 251 fishing operations. The overexploitation (i.e. decreasing of yields and fish sizes) has been confirmed in the West of the island, and in a lower stage in the North. Yields are better in the East and the South. As much as in the first survey, the small non commercial sharks (Squalus megalops) could be countered for half of the catches. At the same time, 2 hook sizes have been tested and the small hooks have displayed a better efficiency in number of catches but not in global weight. Various types of bait have been tested and meat of small local pelagic fish (Selar crumenophtalmus and Decapterus macarellus) have appeared to be the most efficient. This report provides helpful indicators for the management of fish stocks which have been poorly surveyed and poorly regulated till now. A feasibility study of glued-laminated timber beams was carried out in French Guiana using local wood species. The aim of the study was to evaluate the gluing parameters that could ensure good mechanical properties for the manufactured glued-laminated beams in tropical climates. Three abundant wood species with different specific gravity were selected for the study. Melamine-Urea-Formaldehyde and Resorcinol-Phenol-Formaldehyde resins were used for gluing. The three gluing parameters considered are: adhesive spread rate, closing assembly time and gluing pressure.Using European standards, several laboratory tests were performed on normalized samples. The evaluation of a successful lamella’s gluing was done by using elementary tests of delamination and shearing. A delamination test consists of two cycles of water immersion at high pressure and drying which induces severe hygroscopic variation in wood thus causing joints opening. The finger-joints are made using a standard tool usually used for cutting softwoods. The performed tests revealed the influence of wood properties and the gluing parameters on the joint resistance and the mechanical properties of the product. Results show that wood properties such as specific gravity, shrinkage coefficient, and permeation, have a high degree of influence on the gluing step especially on the gluing pressure and on the adhesive spread rate needed to produce a commercial product. Furthermore, wood with medium specific gravity needs more adhesive and more pressure than the one with high specific gravity. Additionally, the effects of other manufacturing parameters, such as planning, double or simple side glue spreading and lamellae thicknesses, on the glue joint resistance were demonstrated. Finally, the common tools used for softwoods are not adapted to making the finger joints with tropical hardwoods. In conclusion, optimal gluing parameters for manufacturing glued-laminated timber beams in French Guiana were established and an economical study using standard glued-laminated timber beams revealed the economic conditions under which a successful manufacturing of these local beams can be implemented in French Guiana. http://www.theses.fr/2011AGUY0484/document | Partager |
Polyploid fish and shellfish: Production, biology and applications to aquaculture for performance improvement and genetic containment Auteur(s) : Piferrer, Francesc Beaumont, Andy Falguiere, Jean-claude Flajshans, Martin Haffray, Pierrick Colombo, Lorenzo Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Polyploids can be defined as organisms with one or more additional chromosome sets with respect to the number most frequently found in nature for a given species. Triploids, organisms with three sets of homologous chromosomes, are found spontaneously in both wild and cultured populations and can be easily induced in many commercially relevant species of fish and shellfish. The major consequence of triploidy is gonadal sterility, which is of advantage in the aquaculture of molluscs since it can result in superior growth. In fish, the induction of triploidy is mainly used to avoid problems associated with sexual maturation such as lower growth rates, increased incidence of diseases and deterioration of the organoleptic properties. Triploidy can also be used to increase the viability of some hybrids, and is regarded as a potential method for the genetic containment of farmed shellfish and fish. This review focuses on some current issues related to the application of induced polyploidy in aquaculture, namely: 1) the artificial induction of polyploidy and the effectiveness of current triploidisation techniques, including the applicability of tetraploidy to generate auto- and allotriploids; 2) the performance capacity of triploids with respect to diploids; 3) the degree and permanence of gonadal sterility in triploids; and 4) the prospects for the potential future generalised use of triploids to avoid the genetic impact of escapees of farmed fish and shellfish on wild populations. Finally, directions for future research on triploids and their implementation are discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Mercury content in commercial pelagic fish and its risk assessment in the Western Indian Ocean Auteur(s) : Kojadinovic, Jessica Potier, M Le Corre, M Cosson, R Bustamante, Paco Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : As top predators of pelagic food webs, large fish naturally bioaccumulate mercury (Hg). Determining Hg burdens in commercialized fish is essential considering the concern about effects of contaminants on human health and the legal thresholds that are therefore set for local consumption and/or exportation. Total Hg levels were measured in the muscular tissue of 183 fish of five commercially important species from the tropical zone of the Western Indian Ocean. All individuals were measured and sexed in order to study the impregnation of Hg with size and sex within each species. Values of Hg found in this part of the Indian Ocean were comparable to Hg in muscular tissue of the same species studied in other areas. The highest Hg levels were noted in Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) caught in waters surrounding Reunion Island (3.97 +/- 2.67 mu g g(-1) dry weight). Following the Swordfish, in decreasing order of Hg content, were the Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) and the Skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), then the Common Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and the Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri). In the North of the Mozambique Channel, Swordfish had higher Hg levels than Yellowfin Tunas, and Dolphinfish exhibited intermediate Hg levels. The size of a fish was a determining factor of its Hg burden, as was the species. Differences in size-normalized Hg levels were observed between the two study zones for Swordfish and Common Dolphinfish. Sex, in contrast, did not influence Hg levels suggesting that females and males have similar feeding habits. The muscular Hg levels presented here suggest that consumers of fish originating from the Western Indian Ocean should limit themselves to one Swordfish based meal per week, or one fish meal a day if they choose to eat tuna or Common Dolphinfish.
