Organophosphate Insecticide Metabolites in Prenatal and Childhood Urine Samples and Intelligence Scores at 6 Years of Age: Results from the Mother-Child PELAGIE Cohort (France) Auteur(s) : Cartier, Chloé Warembourg, Charline Le Maner-Idrissi, Gaïd Lacroix, Agnès Rouget, Florence Monfort, Christine Limon, Gwendolina Durand, Gaël Auteurs secondaires : Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) Institut de recherche, santé, environnement et travail [Rennes] (Irset) ; Université d'Angers (UA) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Université de Rennes 1 (UR1) - École des Hautes Études en Santé Publique [EHESP] (EHESP) - Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) - Structure Fédérative de Recherche en Biologie et Santé de Rennes ( Biosit : Biologie - Santé - Innovation Technologique ) Laboratoire de Psychologie Expérimentale (LPE) ; Université de Bretagne Sud (UBS) - Université de Brest (UBO) - Université de Rennes 2 (UR2) LABOCEA Département de psychologie ; Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) Centre de recherche et département d'ophtalmologie ; CHU Sainte Justine [Montréal] Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience BACKGROUND: Several studies suggest that exposure to organophosphate insecticides (OP) during pregnancy impairs neurodevelopment in children. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated associations between biomarkers of prenatal and postnatal OP exposure and cognitive function of 6-year-olds in a French longitudinal birth cohort. METHODS: In 2002-2006, the PELAGIE mother-child cohort enrolled pregnant women from Brittany. For a random subcohort, we measured nonspecific dialkylphosphate metabolites (DAP) of OP in one maternal urine sample, collected before 19 weeks' gestation, and in one urine sample collected from their 6-year-old children. Six subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-4th edition (WISC-IV) was administered at 6 years to evaluate cognitive function (n=231). Linear regression models controlling for factors including maternal intelligence and the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment score were used. RESULTS: WISC-IV scores were not significantly associated with prenatal or childhood total DAP metabolites. WISC verbal comprehension score was significantly higher in association with the highest maternal urinary concentrations of diethylphosphate metabolites (DE) (5.5; 95% CI: 0.8, 10.3 for extgreater 13.2 nmol/L versus extlessLOQ), while WISC working memory score was significantly lower in association with the highest urinary concentrations of DE metabolites at age 6 years (-3.6; 95% CI: -7.8, -0.6 for extgreater 11.1 nmol/L versus extlessLOD). CONCLUSION: This study found no evidence that prenatal OP exposure adversely affected cognitive function in 6-year-olds, perhaps because of the higher population's socioeconomic status than in previous studies though other causal and non-causal explanations are also possible. The negative association between WISC score and concurrent DE urinary concentrations requires replication by longitudinal studies investigating childhood OP exposure Environmental Health Perspectives hal-01207282 https://hal-univ-rennes1.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01207282 DOI : 10.1289/ehp.1409472 PUBMED : 26394442 | Partager |
Analyse fonctionnelle des causes de rupture des DCP de la Réunion (océan Indien) Auteur(s) : Sacchi, Jacques Tessier, E Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 15-19 octobre 1999 Résumé : The development of the FAD gave rise to technical problems owing to their conception, their setting spot and of their utilisation. Failings generated by the unreliability of components or the uncertain repair precariousness, those can prove to be here more and more expensive with the progression of the ageing of devices and reasons of their loss. For as various domains that aerospace or the fishing deck layout, the engineering has functional analysis tools that permit to reduce conception uncertainties of systems by the mean of a hierarchical classification of function values of components. The application of one of these techniques, the FMEA, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, to the study of reasons of FAD loss in La Reunion describes perfectly everything that this type of method can bring to the appraisal in fishing technology. This preventive analysis method assess the potential risks integrates perfectly in the mind of a precaution approach as it would agree to see to apply to the FADs and to their exploitation. The temporal scaling of discharge is quantified in frequency domain by the transfer function HðxÞ, which is defined as the ratio between the spectra of catchment response and recharge time series. The transfer function may scale with frequency x as HðxÞ x2b. While the classical linear and Dupuit models predict exponents of b52 and b51, observations indicate scalings with noninteger exponents b. Such behaviors have been described by multifractal models, which, however, often lack a relation to the medium characteristics. We revisit and extend the classical linear Dupuit aquifer models and discuss their physical meanings in the light of the resulting aquifer dynamics. On the basis of these classical models, we derive a multicontinuum approach that provides physical recharge models which are able to explain fractal behaviors with exponents 1=2 < b < 2. Furthermore, this approach allows to link the fractal dynamics of the discharge process to the physical aquifer characteristics as reflected in the distribution of storage time scales. We systematically analyze the catchment responses in the proposed multicontinuum models, and identify and quantify the time scales which characterize the dynamics of the catchment response to recharge. This thesis compiles two distinct studies that both document the control of microstructures on rock seismic properties. The first part deals with the development of crystallographic preferred orientations (CPO) in the uppermost mantle associated with melt/fluid-rock interactions, recorded in peridotites xenoliths from the Japan sea back-arc basin. The microstructural and geochemical characteristics of the studied samples reveal that active spreading is associated to uppermost mantle deformation similar to that observed in the Oman ophiolite. At the onset of back-arc spreading, there are no strong interactions between melt percolation and deformation in comparison to continental rift zones, probably due to the relatively small size and short duration of the spreading event. The second part presents a unique database of plagioclase CPO from variously deformed mafic rocks. CPO are grouped in three main types; their characteristics as a function of deformation regime (magmatic or crystal-plastic) are outlined and discussed. Calculated seismic properties of gabbroic rocks show that anisotropy tends to increase as a function of fabric strength, although it is generally weak, due to the competing effect of olivine/clinopyroxene and plagioclase.
This zone represents an 'end member' case for analyzing feedbacks between deformation and melt distribution in the upper mantle, since it experienced strong shear strains in presence of large melt fractions. It is characterized by a subhorizontal compositional layering at the mm to meter scale, from weakly impregnated dunites to olivine-rich gabbros, which parallels a pervasive foliation containing a strong stretching lineation. The parallelism between the compositional layering and the foliation, the diffuse limits of the layers, the alignment of elongated plagioclase-rich aggregates devoid of internal deformation structures with the elongation of olivine crystals in the dunitic layers, and the sharp compositional changes across some, but not all layer limits suggest deformation plays an essential role on the development of the layering. The variation on a mm-scale of the olivine crystal preferred orientation (CPO) symmetry as a function of the modal content: from axial-[100] symmetry in layers with <70% modal olivine to axial-[010] in more gabbroic levels (<40% olivine), which is repeated over the entire section, implies deformation in presence of variable melt fractions. Axial-[100] olivine CPO in olivine-rich layers is consistent with deformation by dislocation creep under high temperature, low pressure, dry conditions. Axial-[010] olivine CPO patterns imply additional sliding along preferentially wetted (010) grain boundaries, increase in the activity of [001] glide, or transpression localized in the melt-rich layers. Since the change in CPO symmetry is not accompanied by dispersion, instantaneous melt fractions must have remained <30-40% in all layers. The continuous variation in olivine CPO symmetry with decreasing olivine content implies therefore that the former depends on the cumulated strain in presence of melt rather than on the instantaneous melt fraction. In oyster farming areas, organic matter fluxes toward sediment is increased. Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) reject organic-rich faeces and pseudofaeces as a result of filtration process. Organic matter can be consumed by benthic fauna, but in excess it can entails the reduction of benthic faunal species richness, abundance and biomass. Organic matter degradation also induces hypoxic (or anoxic) conditions in the sediment, and production of ammonia and sulfides in toxic concentrations. The main objective of this study is to assess the effects of oyster farming on benthic intertidal ecosystems in the Pertuis Charentais. Benthic macrofauna, living (stained) foraminifera, and physicochemical characteristics of the water column and sediment were used as indicators to evaluate these effects. A multidisciplinary approach was conducted across the Pertuis Charentais at 3 different spatial scales: an oyster trestle (micro-scale), an oyster culture area (meso-scale) and various sites across the Pertuis Charentais (macro-scale). The study was also realised at 4 different temporal scales: some months for the spatial micro-scale, every two weeks for 2 years at meso-scale and once per season during one year at macro-scale. In this study, I found that oyster farming enriches sediment in fine particles, organic matter (up to 12 %), particulate organic carbon (15-20 µg mg 1) and leads to high microphytobenthic biomass. Moreover, the association of seasonnal warming (during spring and summer), remineralisation of accumulated organic matter and short-term hypoxic conditions leads to sulfides and ammonium production. Consequently, the benthic biodiversity decreases and the population dynamic is disturbed. The population dynamic disturbance is characterised by fast abundance rises followed by high mortality rates. In these conditions, tolerant benthic macrofaunal (Cirratulidae, Spionidae and Capitellidae) and foraminiferal (Ammonia tepida and Cribroelphidium gunteri) species are promoted. AMBI index confirms "medium" ecological quality of oyster farming areas. On the contrary, across the control sites, sensible species are maintained (Amphipods, Rosalina cf. vilardeboana). Comparison of oyster farming techniques shows that on-bottom culture is less disturbing for benthic ecosystem than off-bottom culture. Axial tomodensitometry, an innovative method, was used to describe in 3D the sedimentary column organisation. I show that oyster farming modifies the sedimentary column functioning. Indeed, the macrofaunal diversity decrease leads to the modification of the functional diversity of assemblages. Thus, the vertical distribution of living foraminifera is limited in oyster farming areas, because their distribution is tightly related to macrofaunal bioturbating modes. Les capacités osmorégulatrices chez la crevette bleue Litopenaeus stylirostris, au cours de l’ontogenèse Auteur(s) : Pham, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Université de la Polynésie Française Résumé : The ontogeny of osmoregulation was studied in the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris in New Caledonia. The implication of branchial organs in ionic regulation was first demonstrated in juveniles by immunolocalization of three ion transporting proteins ( namely NKA, co-transporter NKCC1 and CFTR ) and ionocyte detection was done by means of electron microscopy. The role of the main ion transporting enzyme, NKA, was subsequently investigated during post-embryonic development using an integrative approach associating physiological, histological, immunological and biomolecular studies. Results obtained allowed us to propose a model of the osmoregulatory pattern in L. stylirostris based on weak regulation in the early stages, then progressively this species acquires the adult pattern of hyper-hypo-regulation after metamorphosis with the concurrent development of epipodites and gills. Strong NKA immunofluorescence and abundance of NKA transcripts in these two tissues compared to others organs suggest their functional implication in osmoregulatory processes. The results of this study allow us to increase our knowledge of the penaeid shrimp osmoregulation and to propose zootechnical measures to improve the animal physiological comfort. These propositions have been already tested during larval rearing trials, leading a two-fold-growth in 19 days-old postlarvae. Droits : 2011 The author, Univ. This work investigates in the way of composing the feminine appearance to the beginning of the 20th century, as sign highly valued of a way of life. It will be emphasized in the mode used for the leisure in the beach. In the frame of an ignorant practice, there was prioritized the need to exalt the distinction for on the experience of the sensations that might provoke the contact with the nature. There is understood that for it were decisive the guidelines typological, technological and functional of to dress. The attributes like form, materiality, confection and use, came out his technical role to become determining of the forms of behavior and social interaction and to communicate the manners that the taste could assume for the luxury. Outside regular school and family structures, the youth are exposed to other environments that allow them to learn from adults. This is referred to as “tiers-lieu éducatif” or "third-place education". Churches in Haitian communities in Martinique emerge, in our opinion, from this experience. In fact, the Haitian Diaspora is concentrated in areas that contain small ecclesiastical strongholds, enterprises led by self-acclaimed pastors who originate from the exiled community, assuming responsibility for their progeny, and thus helping them to integrate in the society. This article highlights the function of Education in these areas highly populated by Haitians. Following the example of the native Evangelical Communities, we have formulated the explanatory hypothesis that we have verified: A function that does not fulfil, on the other hand, the few voodoo temples on the island, led by the sons of Toussaint Louverture. Effects of high food-demand fish removal in groups of juvenile sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Auteur(s) : Di Poi, Carole Beauchaud, M Bouchut, C Dutto, Gilbert Coves, Denis Attia, J Éditeur(s) : NRC Résumé : In self-feeding conditions, a few individual sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax (L., 1758)) display strong activity in striking the food dispenser, whereas the remaining individuals of the group actuate the feeder weakly or never. Here, we investigated the effects of removal of the individuals showing dominant activity on the social and feeding behaviours in groups of juvenile sea bass. Following removal, new fish showing a dominant self-feeding activity quickly appear. They always come from the group of fish that have a low number of triggering actuations. This observation shows that it takes less time, about 5 days after the removal of dominant triggerers vs. 14 days at the beginning, for the re-establishment of the behavioural structure, suggesting the possibility of social transmission between individuals. The fish that show weak triggering activity seem to reach the high-food triggering level without obvious signs of competition. This experiment reveals the importance of the food-demand behavioural structure: the fish displaying the highest activity lead to a general food distribution and play a dominant role in feeding the entire group. Functional plasticity in this role within individuals is also demonstrated, indicating that the high-triggering function is essential for the group and not for the individual themselves. This issue of the Revue Etudes Caribéennes, devoted to tourism, aims to lay the foundations of a reflection on the functioning tourist places, their development programs and the different challenges presented to them. Exposed/Open or closed location, concentrated or diffused flows, the nature of these tourist places with their traditional or original customs, orientate different types of potential impacts. The choices made in tourism development are essential: in which conditions should be opted for the traditional seaside tourism, or for mass tourism, or for alternative tourism? Are certain properties linked to specific territories? Should we oppose these two approaches or consider them as complementary in their environments and can they share the same place? The objective of this thematic issue is to call for various and renewed approaches which develop analysis in terms of the economy, regional planning, sociology, geography etc. Articles may propose a theoretical reflection or focus on case studies, dealing with the relations of mass tourism, alternative tourism, or to illustrate one of these two aspects. Priorities fields will not exclusively be Caribbean and American but can come from any part of the world and can illustrate post and/or present situations. The prioritized analysis will include: 1. The concepts of mass tourism and alternative tourism (identification, characteristics, spatial logics, and economic, social and environmental issues). 2. Places of mass tourism (resorts, historic cities, specific forms of site layout and reception facilities) 3. Alter-tourism and the renewal of tourism practices (ecotourism, community tourism, agrotourism) 4. The development of tourist spots and of management methods concerning protected environments (conservation, protection, tourism practices and recreational practices) 5. Economic, social, and environmental issues surrounding different types of tourist places. Ecosystem management of the islands of Guadeloupe, like that of the ecosystem of the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin, is limited by the administrative boundaries that constrain the scope of some of the policy, management or protection initiatives. Cooperation between the various administrative divisions needs to be encouraged. Efforts are being made in this regard on a inter municipality scale with the elaboration of river development plan of “Grand Rivière” (Goyaves Commune) with the collaboration of the Community of Commons Northern Basse-Terre. This inter municipality cooperation will be able to define a new framework for a planning policy among municipalities within a functional area. The elucidation of relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem processes has been limited by the definition of metrics of biodiversity and their integration into experimental design. Functional trait screening can strengthen the performance of these designs.* We suggest the use of Rao's quadratic entropy to measure both functional diversity and phylogenetic diversity of species mixtures proposed for an experimental design, and demonstrate how they can provide complementary information.* We also present an index assessing the statistical performance of these independent variables in different experimental designs. Measurement of independent variables as continuous vs. discrete variables reduces statistical performance, but improves the model by quantifying species differences masked by group assignments.* To illustrate these advances, we present an example from a tropical forest tree community in which we screened 38 species for nine functional traits. The proposed TropiDEP design is based on the relative orthogonality of two multivariate trait axes defined using principal component analysis.* We propose that independent variables describing functional diversity might be grouped to calculate independent variables describing suites of different traits with potentially different effects on particular ecosystem processes. In other systems these axes may differ from those reported here, yet the methods of analysis integrating functional and phylogenetic diversity into experimental design could be universal. The article deals with the intercultural exchanges between two cultural movements rooted in the African Diasporas. In Guadeloupe, a French island in the Caribbean, Gwo-ka was born on the plantation in the 17th century. Blues appeared in the southern United-States by the end of the 19th century. In order to illustrate the similarities between these two afro-diasporic cultural phenomena, the article first examines the economic and social factors that prompted their emergence. Second, it compares their socio-cultural functions within their respective communities. Using Paul Gilroy’s theory of the Black Atlantic, the article concludes with a questioning of his thesis within the framework of the present study. Forty-eight consecutive patients fulfilling the 2013 ACR/EULAR classification criteria for SSc were included in this cross-sectional study. CD16+ monocyte absolute count was defined by flow cytometry and confronted to the clinical characteristics of SSc patients. Twenty-three healthy donors (HD) were randomly selected for comparison. SSc patients had an increased number of total circulating blood monocytes compared to HD (p < 0.001). The CD16- subpopulation absolute count was increased in SSc patients compared to HD (p < 0.001) but was similar in limited SSc (lSSc) and diffuse SSc (dSSc). On the contrary, the CD16+ population absolute count was increased in dSSc compared to both HD and lSSc patients (dSSc 0.071 Giga/L (+/- 0.034) vs HD 0.039 Giga/L (+/- 0.030), p < 0.01, and dSSc 0.071 Giga/L (+/- 0.034) vs lSSc 0.048 Giga/L (+/- 0.024), p < 0.05). The CD16+ monocyte subpopulation absolute count was significantly correlated with the severity of skin fibrosis evaluated by the modified Rodnan skin score (p < 0.001). The CD16+ monocyte subpopulation was also associated with pulmonary fibrosis (p < 0.05), with the severity of the restrictive ventilatory defect evaluated by total lung capacity (p < 0.05) and with the pulmonary function impairment reflected by diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxyde measures (p < 0.01). These results suggest that CD16+ monocytes are associated with the main fibrotic manifestations of SSc and their role in the pathogenesis of fibrosis in this autoimmune disorder should therefore be further considered. This literary analysis focuses on how the narrator of The Enigma of the Return navigates through various spaces (Canada and Haiti) and time in order to “relearn” and “relive” the memories of his childhood and the death of his father. The return and the détour function and are intertwined in a real and in a fiction world, and in the sacred present moment. The oceanic metaphors and the fragmented style also emphasize the narrator’s desire to accentuate the “contre idéologie” of writing. The narrator displays an original “cohabitation” with the notion of “exile”. The nomadism, the long return, and the many “détours” have a goal: to bring the father back to his native land through an enigmatic prose and rhythm… a long peregrination which allows peace and identity to merge: the cyclic end of the voyage is completed. Magmatologie de la Montagne Pelée (Martinique) Auteur(s) : Fichaut, Michele Éditeur(s) : Université de Bretagne Occidentale Résumé : The magmatology of Mount Pelée is characterized by the competition between two major petrogenetic processes : Iractional crystallization and magma mixing. The important volcanic hazards associated with this volcano make the interest of the study: the existence of accurate datas about its geology and the chronology of its eruptions is favorable to a magmatologic study. The aim of this work, carried out within the framework of the PIRPSEV, is to determine the relative importance of the petrogenetic processes involved during the volnano history and then to conclude about the functioning of the underlying magma chambers. It is found upon the petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the ejecta of Mount Pelée. Complexity in trophic structure and stability in a modelled West African estuary Auteur(s) : Villanueva, Ching-maria Diouf, P.s. Albaret, J.-j. An Ecopath model of the Sine Saloum estuary (Senegal) with a total of 37 functional groups is used in this study to determine the key features of this aquatic system. The high fish species biodiversity in the ecosystem may play a role of ensuring its integrity, especially in the presence of stress, though it was observed that this is not entirely the case. Results show that another mitigating factor is the level of interaction strengths between functional groups. Stability is improved by weaker connectance as well as shorter and fatter pyramids. Though differing issues arise with respect to questions driving a system's stability, methods and approaches should consider placing results in the context of a broader ecological theory. Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries, using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis Auteur(s) : Fuchs, Jacques Martin, Jean-louis M. Populus, Jacques Résumé : After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Furthermore, it appears that production sustainability depends on many factors among which socio-economy and ecolo gy are of prime importance.
The STD3 project titled « Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis )) was initiated in 1994, with the aim to study the sustainability of marine shrimp aquaculture in tropical areas, main! y Indonesia and Vietnam, through the following tasks: (i) improve site selection and study the impact of aquaculture on marine environments presenting a variable sensitivity to organic sewage, (ii) analyse the socio-economical aspects and profitability of the aquaculture industry and of common resources (iii) use remote sensing and geographical data bases for diagnosis and monitoring of site degradation (iv) reinforce the capacity of Asian
scientists through training.
Severa! aquaculture sites have been investigated in the Lampung region (South Sumatra, Indonesia), the Mekong delta (Vietnam) and on the West coast of New-Caledonia, providing a large range of typical ecosystems encountered in Asia and in the Pacifie, from coralline sites to coastal plains with mangrove and deltaic areas. The study concerned the spatial structure and seasonal influence of these ecosystems, the temporal variation during the course of the project (3 years) and the relation between the ecological structure and farm productions.
Remote sensing provides a synoptic vision over large land expanses. Severa! scenes were processed for landuse mapping using conventional classification techniques. Concerning water quality assessment, a general relation for the Java sea was found between image and field data in terms of total suspended matter. Applying this relation to a new site in Sumatra has provided an initial approach to water type and, together with land use mapping, a preliminary assessment of the suitability of the area to shrimp aquaculture development.
Socio-economic research has been focused on the identification ofneeds for collective action, including public policy, in the perspective of shrimp farming sustainability. The main concern is in the regulation of shrimp farming intensification and extensification at the scale of coastal ecosystemic entities in a common property resource management perspective. The common considered here is coastal water quality. Comparing the local development profiles and the institutional grounds for the design and implementation of collective management rules shows that variables such as land tenure system, farm owner socio-economic profile, social homogeneity or heterogeneity of the farmers are key factors to analyse the potential for sustainability. The defmition of
water quality and the possible means to ensure its collective management are discussed. The main conclusion is that the economie incentives to farming development are strong but there is no significant difference among traditional, semi-intensive and intensive systems in terms of economie efficiency or wealth distribution.
The description of the functioning of the different kinds of ecosystems make it possible to give an advice concerning the positioning of the activity inside the ecosystem, and furthermore to have a reference state in order to determine the impact of the activity on the coastal environnement. This impact can be summarized as an increase in the concentration of total suspended matt€?r, of particulate organic matter and of sulfate reducing bacterias. This organic ma~.er is either issued from rearing activities or from telluric origine, due to mangrove eradication when building the ponds.
An evaluation of the relationship existing between productivity and characteristics of each ecosystem bas been conducted by correlating ecological indicators data (concentration of total suspended matter, particulate organic matter, chlorophyll, percentage of pheopigments in total pigments and cyanobacteria and sulfatereducing bacteria in water and sediments) with the average production of the farms. This comparison lead to the compilation of a scale of observed production integrating the range of these environmental parameters with shrimp production levels, bound to facilitate the positioning of shrimp farming in relation with the confmement leve! of each ecosystem.
Lastly, ali geographie data originated from the various compartments of the study have been geo-referenced and loaded into a geographical information system. This allows to display any query made on spatial variables and their related statistical data, including the ir variations over the last few years and to reveal patterns and phenomena otherwise not obvious.
