INRA, CFCS Description : The Sargassum seaweed [Sargassum natans and S. fluitans] can be classed as a perennial invasive weed problem in all the Caribbean islands. It has been shown to affect fisher-folks, sea bathers, and tourists. It is proving to be costly to remove; in addition to its offensive odour which hampers the clean-up operations. The University of Trinidad and Tobago at the BAFT campus is engaged in series of activities to find suitable uses of the seaweed as animal feed, and as soil medium and ameliorant. This study aimed at evaluating the suitability of the seaweed as a growing media for the production of sweet peppers [Capsicum annuum var. annuum] using different percentage of the weed (0, 25, 50 and 100%) with soil under greenhouse conditions. The crop growth and development and yield were monitored. The results indicated that the plant height [Y pl ht = 16.6 + 0.3 DAT - 0.11 TRT] and leaf number [Y no.lvs = 0.90 + 1.04 DAT - 0.206 TRT] increased as age of the crop increased, but decreased with the increase in percentage of seaweed/ soil mixture. A similar response was observed for the flower buds and fruits numbers and percentage soil mixture. The medium had no effect on the crop transpiration and net photosynthesis rate [PN] , photosynthesis active radiation[PAR] , and stomatal conductance. A nutrient analysis of the medium was also conducted. Probiotic P-acidilactici application in shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris culture subject to vibriosis in New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Castex, Mathieu Chim, Liet Pham, Dominique Lemaire, Pierrette Wabete, Nelly Nicolas, Jean-louis Schmidely, P Mariojouls, C Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : We studied the effects of a lactic acid bacterium, Pediococcus acidilactici (strain MA 18/5M, CNCM), as a dietary probiotic on growth performance and some nutritional and microbiological aspects of the shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Experimental shrimp culture was carried out over 10 weeks, using floating cages of 14 m(2) each set in earthen ponds, in a New Caledonia farm affected by "Summer syndrome", a septicaemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo. The experiment design testing probiotic-coated pellets against control was replicated in two earthen ponds. High mortalities, characteristic of Summer syndrome, were observed during the first 2 weeks of the trial. The probiotic improved production in the treated cages from both ponds with increases in the survival rate (7% and 15% respectively) and final biomass (8% and 12% respectively). No differences were recorded among treatments on growth performances, but significant lower food conversion ratios were obtained with probiotic treatment. After 5 weeks of rearing, the Hepatosomatic Index and the adjusted dry weight of the digestive gland were significantly increased by 10% and by 9% respectively in shrimps treated with probiotic. In the meantime, the specific activities of alpha amylase and trypsin in the digestive gland showed a significant effect of the probiotic treatment with respective increases by 35% and 55%. The rise in total trypsin activity following morning feeding was also enhanced by the probiotic treatment (P < 0.001). The highest concentration of probiotic (between 10(4)-10(5) CFU g(-1) of fresh gut) in the shrimp gut was obtained 2 h after feeding. The concentration remained high for 4 h after feeding before decreasing until the next meal. Total bacterial counts on Marine agar and TCBS in the gut were significantly lowered by the probiotic treatment over the 10 weeks of the experiment. Additionally, during the first 2 weeks, prevalence and load of V nigripulchritudo strains in haemolymph was lower in animals fed with the probiotic diet. This study demonstrated, under pond conditions, that feeding shrimp with live terrestrial lactic acid bacteria can be an effective treatment for improving shrimp culture affected by vibriosis. Diel feeding periodicity, daily ration and relative food consumption in some fish populations in three reservoirs of Sri Lanka Auteur(s) : Weliange, Wasantha S. Amarasinghe, Upali S. Moreau, Jacques Villanueva, Ching-maria Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Twelve diel surveys were carried out in three reservoirs of Sri Lanka viz. Minneriya, Udawalawe and Victoria, to investigate diel feeding patterns, daily ration and relative food consumption in fish populations. Stomach content weights of different size classes of various fish species in the three reservoirs in 12 diel surveys were analysed using an iterative method, MAXIMS. Predominantly herbivorous or detritivorous fish species such as Amblypharyngodon melettinus and Oreochromis niloticus exhibited one peak in the diel feeding pattern. Two peak feeding periods were evident in predominantly insectivores and/or zooplanktivores (e. g., Puntius chola and Rasbora daniconius) and interestingly in macrophyte feeders (i.e., Etroplus suratensis, Puntius filamentosus and Tilapia rendalli). It might be possible that all species with two feeding peaks in diel feeding patterns rely on vision for feeding. Food consumption per biomass (Q/B ratio) defined as amount of food consumed per unit weight of an age-structured population of fish was estimated on the basis of the average quantities of food consumed over a long period of time by various size classes in order to minimize the bias of estimates. New Caledonia is a developing industry, exclusively based on the species Litopenaeus stylirostris. However, it is subject to mortalities during grow out as observed all over the world. Since 1993, shrimp reared during the cold period are affected by a disease named "syndrome 93". As a consequence, the whole industry has become seasonal and produces essentially during the warm season. The climatic conditions during the periods of transition between the two main seasons could be responsible for an environmental stress and the origin reason for mortality outbreaks. Stocking density is the main risk factor. It increases the probability of the appearance and development of the epizooty in the pond. The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo, was identified for the first time in December 1997 in an intensive shrimp farm (DF). It has become enzootic ever since and is expressed after 50d of rearing. Since 2003, two others farms located near DF have developed the disease. As a consequence, the summer syndrome is considered to be a potential threat for all the industry. Between 1991 and 2005, the increase of feed input and nitrogen levels in feed has led to a significant increase in the growth rate over the years in the farms affected by the disease. In consequence, an early eutrophication of the water is observed, which is concomitant with the beginning of the mortality outbreaks. An early eutrophication and the virulence level of the pathogen are considered as the main risk factors of the disease. Factors may act synergistically to explain the summer syndrome. As part of a multidisciplinary approach (pathology physiology environment), two high-frequency surveys were carried out to analyse the pond ecosystem. Since the feed quantity increases with the biomass of shrimp, the eutrophication level of the pond ecosystem will also tend to increase with the duration of rearing. During the first part of the rearing, the abundance of each picoplankton type is exceptionally high and picophytoplankton dominated the autotrophic compartment. The nanophytoplankton dominated the second part of the rearing and was more unstable. The shift from pico to nanophytoplankton could be considered as an environmental stress and was observed in relation to the beginning of the mortalities, whatever the disease. Shift intensity could play a role by inducing directly or indirectly a stress for shrimp and/or a growth and/or virulence factors of the pathogen. Results from sediment studies show that mortality was best characterized by TAN concentration in pore water and even more when the TAN concentration was high. TAN and pH are potential stress factors for shrimp reared in ponds affected by these diseases. The vertebral mean vary from 50,68 (vertebrae) during the first year of life to 51,11 (vertebrae) for adults. 0-group Merluccius display a rapid growth with significant interannual variability (0.71 mm.day-1 in 2001 versus 0.74 mm.day-1 in 2002). The spawning period occurs in April and the average length on the firth January following the hatching is of 17.3 cm (first seasonal check / increment on the sagittal otolith is located about 0.143 cm from the nucleus). At the end of the first year of life the average length is about 24 cm. The longevity of the species is important and growth parameters (L = 138,24 cm ; K = 0,132) explain natural mortality coefficient of M = 0.21. No difference for growth between male and female has been observed for this stock. The ratio total weight / eviscerated weight is equal to Fc = 1,086. Both male and female have same spatial and bathymetric distribution. Juveniles are found in deep waters (< 17 cm length) and move to coastal waters where they display an average length of (33 cm length). Longer individuals are found in nursery areas where they feed and grow then move to deeper areas to spawn. Nursery areas are numerous and located in the Celtic Sea and in the bay of Biscay. In the bay of Biscay, disturbances resulted from hydrondynamics affect the settlement on the nursery grounds particularly in the southern part of the bay. Diet composition varies with age. Juveniles feed mainly on crustaceans (Euphausia kroni). At the length of 23 cm, individuals feed strictly on fishes. Sizes of preys are proportional with sizes of predators and preys are composed mainly of species that feed and reproduce close to the bottom. Cannibalism has been observed for this specie, and increases with age notably in the northern part of the bay of Biscay and in the Celtic Sea. Main preys are 0-group juveniles. This specie is assumed to be a passive predator catching its preys when they come to feed in the bottom. Although they are punctual, these results have been obtained after studies on the evolution of sizes during the first year of life (daily increments measurements) and on the spawning period parameters (back-calculating). Average length on the firth January following hatching and the position of the first seasonal check on the otolith are based on observations of the sizes on the firth January following hatching (obtained with growth rates and spawning period parameters). The results are similar to those described in previous studies, nevertheless they have to be confirmed with growth and diet composition analyses. A long term study appear essential to determine biological and ecological parameters of this species for sustainable management of the stock. Grazing, main way of feeding ruminants in the tropics, is often undervalued because it is associated with animal performance deemed insufficient, and may have adverse effects on the environment. Even if stall feeding allows better production, this way of feeding has drawbacks in terms of investment, profitability, impact of emissions on the environment and product quality. Intensification of grazing seems a way forward, but requires a better understanding of this way of feeding and its impact on feeding and animal performance. It also appears necessary to compare grazing and stalls feeding on homogeneous criteria, separating the components of these modes of management. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate and compare stalls and pasture feeding environment, taking into account also the distribution or not of concentrate on feeding, growth, slaughter characteristics and water consumption. At first , we studied in an experiment , the effects of these two feeding systems on growth, slaughter and carcass characteristics of Creoles bulls slaughtered at two ages (early vs. late ). Bulls fed in trough grew faster, had greater carcass weight and fatter carcasses. We observed that a later slaughter of grazing animals (17 and 21 months vs. 14 and 17 months in stalls), allowed to reach final weights similar to those obtained in stalls and carcasses richer in muscle. We explained most of our results by the combined effects of feeding environment and complementation strategy and wanted to study their effects. In a second step, the study of the effects of feeding environment was made in first instance, through a meta-analysis. Stalls fed animals had greater performances than pasture fed ones, but these effects depended on complementation strategy. This meta-analysis also highlighted the lack of knowledge on intake and digestibility at pasture, which is a limitation on attempts to compare with measurements carried out in trough-fed animals. To investigate the relative effects of feeding environment and complementation strategy, we conceived an analytical trial with Creole bulls reared in stalls and at pasture, supplemented or not with concentrate. First of all, this analytical trial was the support of a methodological study, which identified that the NIRS method allows the best estimate of the OMD, OMI and DOMI at pasture. The analytical trial showed that grazing animals had better feed efficiency feed for their growth than stall fed ones and complementation strategy influenced more these variables than feeding environment. With an appropriate strategy for complementation, grazing animals can achieve similar performance to those obtained at the trough. http://www.theses.fr/2013AGUY0675/document | Partager |
Effect of an herbivorous diet on energy balance of Litopenaeus vannamei at selected ontogenetic stages Auteur(s) : Maldonado, Carlos Cuzon, Gerard Guzman, Emilio Brito, Roberto Soto, Luis Arena, Leticia Gaxiola, Gabriela Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Herbivorous (20% vegetable protein, 40% carbohydrate) and carnivorous diets (40% marine animal protein, 20% carbohydrate) were experimentally tested to assess their effect on the energy balance and energetic substrates utilized by postlarvae (PL's /15 days) and juvenile shrimp (3-6 g) of Litopenaeus vannamei. Postlarval stage 60 (PL60, early juveniles) shrimps fed HeD and CaD diets, then late juveniles (3-6 g) acclimated to the same diets were tested for their respective energy partitioning potential. No significant differences (p>0.05) on growth were obtained in early juveniles (mean final wet weight of 0.19 g). However in late juvenile stages a significant difference (p<0.05) in growth rate was observed. In terms of energy partitioning, both early and late juveniles seem to spend more energy in respiratory metabolism than in the elimination of excretion products. A change in feed composition based on quality protein sources induced some modifications on shrimp's activity measured by heat increment. Shrimps fed with an herbivorous diet showed a higher heat increment. Interestingly, the early stages of L vannamei display a remarkable capacity to assimilate a plant protein-based and a high carbohydrate level diet. Such capacity with a stimulation of genes would lead to a good adaptation of juveniles receiving all-plant diets to sustain growth performances up to a marketable size. The implications of these findings for the shrimp farming feeding costs are briefly discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Evaluation of floating cages as an experimental tool for marine shrimp culture studies under practical earthen pond conditions Auteur(s) : Chim, Liet Castex, Mathieu Pham, Dominique Brun, Pierre Lemaire, Pierrette Wabete, Nelly Schmidely, P Mariojouls, C Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The New Caledonia blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris is commercially produced under semi-intensive rearing conditions. The size of the farming earthen ponds (510 ha) and the subsequent production constraints make it difficult to use them as experimental units for random experiments. Moreover, since every pond has its own characteristics, ponds' effects cannot be ruled out, thus making it hard to define true replicates. In order to design future experiments under conditions resembling those used in production, we evaluated the possible use of floating cages as experimental units with the aim of assessing treatment effects with a reasonable statistical power. To this end, two sets of floating cages were placed respectively in two different ponds in a commercial farm. In both cases the zootechnical conditions in the cages were similar in post-larvae origin, management, and diet and feeding regime. The aim of the study was to evaluate on a technical basis the possibility of rearing shrimps in floating cages set up in earthen ponds and to assess this method from a statistical standpoint. Shrimps reared in and outside the cages showed comparable growth and survival rates. The variability in the zootechnical parameters between cages, expressed as the estimated coefficient of variation (CV) for survival rate, total final biomass (g), final body weight (g), daily increment in body weight (g day− 1) and FCR were 11.0, 13.7, 4.4, 5.4, and 7.0%, respectively. On the basis of these figures, we calculated for a given statistical power (80%) the number of replicates (cages) that would be required to reveal significant differences between two treatments, at a 5% level of significance. We found that for expected differences of 20% from the control mean, 3 and 6 floating cages per treatment would be reasonable to determine statistical differences for growth parameters and survival rate, respectively. Moreover, we showed a significant pond effect in regard to survival and growth between the two sets of cages. These results illustrated the within-farm variability among the ponds, and confirmed that the specific characteristics of each pond from the same farm make it difficult to use the ponds themselves as experimental units. The study demonstrates that rearing in floating cages is an economical, powerful and sensitive experimental tool for shrimp culture studies specifically carried out under conditions close to semi-intensive production. From 1346 to 1352, the plague killed an estimated 25-40% of Europeans of all age-groups [1] , i.e., 30 to 60% of Europe population. One of the earliest and most widely accepted explanations was that God was punishing humanity for their sins. One remedy for the curse was to do penitence. Thus in 1348 there rapidly arose a mass movement of flagellation [2]. In fact flagellation could not really help against such threat. The Black Death or Bubonic plague is caused by Yersinia pestis, a Eubacteria discovered in 1894 by Alexandre Yersin. It is transmitted by the bite of the flea Xenopsylla cheopsis. This flea lives by feeding the blood of many species besides man but its most preferred relationship is with the black rat (Rattus rattus). Fossilized remains of the plague flea have been found in large numbers in Amarna, Egypt [3, 4] about 1350 BC, and thus could be directly linked to the events described in the Book of Samuel [5, 6]. During the epidemic of Bubonic plague in London in 1665-1666, the known treatments were made use of, e.g. the so-famous Theriac or Venice Treacle which is used from the time of ancient Rome as a remedy against poison [7]. Since then, more specialized and novel treatments have been developed. However, since the characterization of Yersinia pestis, numerous drugs have been developed against it, e.g. gentamicin or doxycycline [8]. These researches had been carried out using more elaborated biochemical, biophysical and biological approaches. Influence of environment factors on bacterial ingestion rate of the deposit-feeder Hydrobia ulvae and comparison with meiofauna Auteur(s) : Pascal, Pierre-Yves Christine, Dupuy Richard, Pierre Haubois, Anne-Gaelle Niquil, Nathalie Auteurs secondaires : Evolution Paris Seine ; Université Nice Sophia Antipolis (UNS) ; Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Université Côte d'Azur (UCA) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) - Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) LIttoral ENvironnement et Sociétés - UMR 7266 (LIENSs) ; Université de La Rochelle (ULR) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Centre de Recherche sur les Ecosystèmes Littoraux Anthropisés (CRELA) ; Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) - Université de La Rochelle (ULR) - Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER) Université de Caen Normandie (UNICAEN) ; Normandie Université (NU) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Elsevier Résumé : International audience Deposit feeders are able to process a considerable volume of sediment, containing large 9 quantities of associated bacteria. However, conclusions concerning the trophic role played by 10 benthic bacteria in marine sediments are still not fully elucidated. This study deals with 11 bacterivory by the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae, one of the most abundant deposit-feeding 12 species in intertidal mudflats in Western Europe. Ingestion rates of bacteria were determined 13 during grazing experiments using 15 N pre-enriched bacteria. Grazing experiments were 14 performed in order to measure effects of abiotic (temperature, salinity and luminosity) and 15 biotic (bacterial and algal abundances) factors on ingestion rates of bacteria by H. ulvae of an 16 intertidal mudflat (Brouage, Marennes-Oléron, France). The mean ingestion rate of bacteria 17 by H. ulvae was 1149 ngC ind-1 h-1. The general trend showed a temperature effect with an 18 optimum around 30°C, and the assimilation rate was significantly lower at 5°C. Bacterial 19 assimilation did not significantly differ between salinity 18 and salinity 31. Ingestion was the 20 same in light and in dark conditions. Results were compared with those of other grazing 21 experiments conducted simultaneously in similar conditions with two other grazers with 22 different size and feeding modes: the foraminifera Ammonia tepida and a nematode 23 community from the superficial sediment of the Brouage mudflat. Hydrobia ulvae and 24 nematodes presented a feeding behavior less influenced by environmental changes than A. tepida. Hydrobia ulvae ingested bacteria at a higher rate than smaller meiofaunal grazers and seemed to have a lower ability to selectively ingest diatoms than meiofaunal grazers. Effect of dietary protein level on growth and energy utilization by Litopenaeus stylirostris under laboratory conditions Auteur(s) : Gauquelin, F Cuzon, Gerard Gaxiola, G Rosas, C Arena, L Bureau, D Cochard, Jean-claude Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : A study was conducted using a bioenergetics approach to generate information on energy requirement and feed utilization of Litopenaeus stylirostris. Animals (initial mean weight 21 +/- 1 g were fed ad libitum six experimental diets, ranging from 25 to 58% crude protein (CP), for 50 days. Weight gain increased from 21 to 30 g with increasing dietary protein level. Survival rates averaged 80%. Basal metabolism (HeE) and heat increment of feeding (HiE) were monitored using respirometry. HeE was on average I U shrimp(-1) day(-1) or 47 U kg live weight(-1) day (22 kJ/kg(0.8). d(-1)), slightly more than what is observed in fish. HiE averaged 0.2 W/sbrimp(-1) day(-1) or 10 W kg live weight(-1) day(-1) (4 kJ/kg(0.8) d(-1)). It represented 3 1 % and 12% digestible energy intake (DET) for shrimp fed on 58% CP and 25% CP diet respectively. Non-fecal (UE + ZE) energy calculated on the basis of N-ammonia excretion averaged 0.2 jig N-ammonia/g dry wt./ mn or 25 J live shrimp(-1) day(-1) in fasting stage and increased to 40 J in post-prandial stage. Ammonia production increased with increasing dietary crude protein (CP). The O:N ratio indicated that protein was increasingly used as an energy substrate as CP increased. The information was used to construct an energy budget for shrimp fed a protypical 40% CP diet. Gross energy intake (IE) was estimated at 6.5 W live shrimp(-1) day(-1); digestible energy intake (DEI) at 5, urinary and branchial excretion (UE +ZE) at 1.2, total heat production (HE) at 3.2; recovered energy (RE) at 0.6 (or 11% DEI). L. stylirostris adults issued from domesticated strain appeared to be more efficiently utilizing (i.e. converting into carcass energy) protein than carbohydrates. This preliminary energy budget can be used to construct theoretical feed requirement and waste outputs model for L. stylirostris. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V. Are planktonic larvae of marine benthic invertebrates too scarce to compete within species? Auteur(s) : Strathmann, Rr Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : Several models for the evolution of complex life histories have assumed a carrying capacity for both larval and postlarval stages. In addition, the densities of larvae in laboratory experiments are often so high that there is competition for food. Published values for maximal clearance rates and estimated abundances of larvae suggest that these assumptions and experimental conditions are unrealistic for most marine larvae. For most ciliated larvae, maximum clearance rates are at most a few mi of water daily, and their estimated larval concentrations are at most one to several larvae per liter. Therefore these larvae appear to be too scarce for their grazing to affect their food supply. Larvae of most species are also scarce relative to co-occurring planktonic animals that feed on particles in the same size range. Larvae of many species are scarce relative to co-occurring larvae with a similar feeding apparatus. These observations suggest that larvae of most species have a negligible effect on their food supply. Exceptions could occur when a single species of larva dominates the zooplankton; such circumstances appear to be rare, although extreme aggregations of larvae dominated by a single species could be missed by pump or net samples. Analogous but more conjectural arguments can be made for density-dependent attraction of predators to larval prey. These inferences apply to single species, not to meroplanktonic larvae as a whole: in some coastal waters, larvae of benthic invertebrates comprise a large portion of the multicellular planktonic animals. Also, a species' larval growth may be food-limited in many waters, even when the abundance of food is independent of the abundance of its larvae. EU purse seine fishery interaction with marine turtles in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans: a 15 years analyses Auteur(s) : Clermont, Sandra Chavance, Pierre Delgado De Molina, Alicia Murua, Hilario Ruiz, Jon Ciccione, Stephane Bourjea, Jerome Résumé : Bycatch of marine turtles, vulnerable or endangered species, is a growing issue of all fisheries, including Oceanic purse-seine fishery. The present paper seeks to assess marine turtle bycatch at a spatial and temporal level in the European purse seine fishery operating in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The study was based on data collected through French and Spanish observer programs from 1995 to 2011, a period where more than 230 000 fishing sets were realized by the UE fleets in both Oceans. A total of 15 913 fishing sets were observed, including 6 515 on drifting Fish Aggregate Devices (FAD) and 9 398 on Free Swimming Schools (FSC). Over the study period, 597 turtles were caught, 86% being released alive at sea. At the same time, from 2003 to 2011, 14 124 specific observations were carried out on floating objects whether they ended in a set or not. 354 marine turtles were observed upon which 80% were already free or entangled alive and therefore released alive. At the temporal and spatial level, data were organized and analysed by Ocean, fishing mode (FAD vs. FSC) as well as by year, quarter and statistical square of 1°. In order to evaluate the impact if this fishery in both Oceans, bycatch distribution was compared to the total fishing effort of the UE fleet, as well as to the known marine turtle post nesting migration routes, nesting population abundances and known feeding areas. The species composition, the size and sex structure of bycatch are also discussed here. At last, an attempt to raise the data to the total fishing effort was carried out. Based on observation of marine turtle by-catches on sets, we estimated that, globally, 3500 marine turtles were accidentally captured by the EU-PS fleet in the Atlantic Ocean from 1995 to 2010, and around 2000 in the Indian Ocean from 2003 to 2010, with a corresponding annual bycatch rate of 218 (SD=150; survival rate =91%) and 250 (SD=157; survival rate =77%) respectively in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. However, because of important uncertainties mainly due to the low observation coverage and the scarcity of marine turtle bycatch events, it was impossible to produce solid and reliable global estimates of marine turtle bycatch and mortality due to PS activity. Caterpillars and fungal pathogens: two co-occurring parasites of an ant-plant mutualism Auteur(s) : Roux, Olivier Céréghino, Régis Solano, Pascal J. Dejean, Alain Auteurs secondaires : Berkekey Seismological Laboratory ; University of California, Berkeley Laboratoire Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Environnement (EcoLab) ; CNRS - Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées - Université Paul Sabatier - Toulouse 3 (UPS) - Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (INP Toulouse) - PRES Université de Toulouse Université Paul Sabatier - Toulouse 3 (UPS) Pascal Solano (FRANCE) ; Pascal Solano (FRANCE) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Public Library of Science Résumé : International audience In mutualisms, each interacting species obtains resources from its partner that it would obtain less efficiently if alone, and so derives a net fitness benefit. In exchange for shelter (domatia) and food, mutualistic plant-ants protect their host myrmecophytes from herbivores, encroaching vines and fungal pathogens. Although selective filters enable myrmecophytes to host those ant species most favorable to their fitness, some insects can by-pass these filters, exploiting the rewards supplied whilst providing nothing in return. This is the case in French Guiana for Cecropia obtusa (Cecropiaceae) as Pseudocabima guianalis caterpillars (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) can colonize saplings before the installation of their mutualistic Azteca ants. The caterpillars shelter in the domatia and feed on food bodies (FBs) whose production increases as a result. They delay colonization by ants by weaving a silk shield above the youngest trichilium, where the FBs are produced, blocking access to them. This probable temporal priority effect also allows female moths to lay new eggs on trees that already shelter caterpillars, and so to occupy the niche longer and exploit Cecropia resources before colonization by ants. However, once incipient ant colonies are able to develop, they prevent further colonization by the caterpillars. Although no higher herbivory rates were noted, these caterpillars are ineffective in protecting their host trees from a pathogenic fungus, Fusarium moniliforme (Deuteromycetes), that develops on the trichilium in the absence of mutualistic ants. Therefore, the Cecropia treelets can be parasitized by two often overlooked species: the caterpillars that shelter in the domatia and feed on FBs, delaying colonization by mutualistic ants, and the fungal pathogen that develops on old trichilia. The cost of greater FB production plus the presence of the pathogenic fungus likely affect tree growth. Behavioral and neurophysiological responses of European sea bass groups reared under food constraint Auteur(s) : Di Poi, Carole Attia, J Bouchut, C Dutto, Gilbert Coves, Denis Beauchaud, M Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The individual food-demand behavior of juvenile European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) reared in groups under self-feeding conditions was investigated. The triggering activity on self-feeder, i.e. index of the food-demand activity, agonistic interactions and territorial behavior were monitored for periods of 42 to 68 days in six groups of 50 fish. The specific growth rate was calculated and the brain serotonergic activity was used as a stable index of social stress. Inter-individual differences appeared in triggering activity and three groups were distinguished: 3-5 high-triggering fish, 17-30 low-triggering fish and the remaining individuals were null-triggering fish. There were no significant differences in specific growth rates calculated at the end of the experiment (day 42 or day 68) between individuals with high, low, and null food-demand (ANOVA, p > 0.05). No territorial or agonistic behaviors were observed, however, there were significant differences in brain scrotonergic activity between the three triggering groups (ANOVA, p=0.050 in telencephalon and p=0.004 in cerebellum). Specifically, high-triggering fish had lower serotonergic turnover than low or null-triggering fish. We put forth the hypothesis that fish with low or null-triggering activity could be stressed by the high activity of high-triggering individuals. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Long term pervaporation desalination of tubular MFI zeolite membranes Auteur(s) : Drobek, Martin Yacou, Christelle Motuzas, Julius Julbe, Anne Ding, Liping Diniz da Costa, João C. ZSM-5 membranes delivered higher water fluxes when compared with S-1 membranes due to enhanced hydrophilicity of the Al-rich zeolite structure leading to fluxes as high as 11.5kgm -2h -1 for 0.3wt% NaCl feed solutions at 75°C. At higher salt concentration the water flux decreased alongside with the salt rejection rate, however the hydrophilic ZMS-5 membrane became more susceptible to performance loss, particularly at high temperatures. Detailed stability experiments carried out for up to 560h showed the dissolution of both S-1 and ZSM-5 top layers. This was attributed to the combined effects of ion exchange and water dissolution mechanisms. Interesting though, the MFI structure zeolite was still observed on the XRD patterns whilst EDX depth profile showed the presence of silica up to 30μm depth into the support. These results suggest the formation/infiltration of a compact amorphous phase in the substrate, derived from the aggregation of the dissolved silicate species and possibly together with the arrangement of MFI nano-slabs during the desalination tests. Despite generating lower water fluxes, the S-1 membrane exhibited relatively high robustness under the long term testing conditions which included temperature cycling, delivering salt rejections from initial >99% to <80% at the end of the testing period (560h). © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Energy-protein management by some warmwater finfishes. Auteur(s) : Luguet, P Moreau, Y Éditeur(s) : Actes de colloques Ifremer, Tahiti, French Polynesia, 20 Feb - 4 Mar 1989, n°9, chap. 68, pp.751-755 Résumé : If warmwater finfish protein requirements as level in diet is low, absolute intake per day is similar to those of coldwater species. But relation of this requirement with specific growth rate differs for strictly warmwater fishes as Tilapias. Analysis of partition between protein and non-protein energy retention shows that these species with Clarias make a better use of non-protein energy provided and consequently improve their protein retention. Better carbohydrate digestibility and metabolism are propounded as part of the explanation. Live preys in shrimp culture: nutritional and sanitary considerations on the use of Artemia in New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Pham, Dominique Wabete, Nelly Maillez, Jean-rene Broutoi, Francis Chim, Liet Éditeur(s) : PSIC 11 - 11th Pacific Science Inter-Congress : Pacific Countries and their Ocean: Facing Local and Global Changes / 2nd Symposium on French Research in the Pacific. March 2 - 6, 2009 Tahiti, French Polynesia. Résumé : In aquaculture, Artemia nauplii are commonly used as live prey; and represent 40 % of the total aquaculture feed demands in the early stages. However, the production of Brine shrimp is very unstable from one year to another and in the late 90’s, only 20 % of the world aquaculture need was covered. An insufficient offer leads to higher prices of the Artemia cysts and consequently, the price of shrimp juveniles from hatchery. In New Caledonia, marine aquaculture is mainly based on the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. From Zoea 3 to 10 days old post-larvae (P10), the shrimp are mainly fed with live preys. Eleven kilos of Artemia cyst are necessary for producing one million of P10. From a sanitary point of view, Artemia can be a virus carrier and Vibrio population increase is often detected in the larval rearing tank the day after the feeding with live prey. Up to now, Brine shrimp are delivered in excess but with the cost and sanitary problems, Saint-Vincent laboratory has started some experiments in order to optimise the use of Artemia in shrimp larval rearing. The first tests were conducted to determine the effect of the Artemia quantity on the growth and the survival rate at different post-larval stages (P8-P11, P5-P8 and M3-P3). It was shown that four to twelve times fold Artemia was necessary for P8-P11 compared to M3-P3. And it was also noticed that the “optimized”quantity of live food at M3-P3 was twice lower than the recommended amount of the hatchery feeding protocol in New Caledonia. A better knowledge of the real feed requirement in the early life of the blue shrimp will be helpful to decrease the cysts quantities used in shrimp hatcheries but also the associated sanitary impact. And further, these results will give data for developing formulated diets which will replace the live prey and will increase the biosecurity and the sustainability of the production of the blue juvenile shrimp in New Caledonia.
Effects of rearing density on sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) biological performance, blood parameters and disease resistance in a flow through system Auteur(s) : Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle Lemarie, Gilles Breuil, Gilles Petochi, Tommaso Marino, Giovanna Triplet, Sebastien Dutto, Gilbert Fivelstad, Sveinung Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : During 84 days, the effects of density on juvenile sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) (76 +/- 16 g) were studied in an experimental tank-based flow through system. Performance, stress response and resistance to virus infection were analysed under five stabilized rearing densities: 10, 20, 40, 70 and 100 kg m(-3). Water quality parameters (CO2, total ammonia nitrogen and O-2) were measured and maintained close to the recommended values for farmed sea bass by adjusting water renewal exchange. No significant differences were observed between density treatments, neither on stress response (cortisol) nor susceptibility to nodavirus. With regards to biological performances, the daily feed intake and specific growth rate were significantly lower in fish reared at the 100 kg m(-3) density. Results on the effects of density in sea bass reared in flow through (present study) and in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) (Sammouth et al. 2009) were compared as a contribution to the identification of density not affecting health and welfare in farmed sea bass. Effect of water exchange on effluent and sediment characteristics and on partial nitrogen budget in semi-intensive shrimp ponds in New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Lemonnier, Hugues Faninoz, Sebastien Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : An experiment was conducted in six earthen ponds with 20 shrimps m(-2) Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) during the warm season in New Caledonia to study the dynamics of wastes in relation with water exchange rate (WER). The nitrogen budget was established, taking into account the different forms of nitrogen in the water, sediment, feed and shrimp. Data from a wide range of treatments applied in unreplicated ponds were treated using regression analysis to establish the relationship between WER and partial nitrogen budget, sediment characteristics and shrimp performance. To compare effluent quality between treatments during the season, data were analysed using the non-parametric sign test. The water outflow was characterized by a decrease in the concentrations of N-mineral forms (TAN, NO2--NO3-), an increase in the concentration of organic soluble and sestonic organic forms (expressed in terms of particulate nitrogen, particulate organic carbon, chlorophyll a) compared with the water inflow. Increasing WER increased the amount of exported wastes and mainly in the organic forms and TAN can be considered as negligible. The nitrogen budget showed that 19-46% of nitrogen input (feed+water) was exported into the coastal environment. The results showed that the quality of the sediment decreased as WER decreased. The potential negative impact of the developing industry in New Caledonia on the costal environment could be partially reduced in a first step by decreasing WER. However, if applied in the farms, this practice should be linked to a close survey of the evolution of sediment quality.
