In 325 surveys, 518 visuai observations and acoustic 202 have identified four families, 14 genera and 17 species, representing a cumulative total ofnearly 6000 cetaceans assessed within 15 miles of coastal water ofGuadeloupe. Dolphins (Delphinidae), constitute 33% ofthe 36 species currently known in the world. Six rare species have been described. Among the baleen whales, the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrate into coastal waters from December to late May and is the species most encountered. With individual monitoring by telemetry, it has been proved that at least one individual ofthis species could stay in the archipelago over eight days. In 2010, a humpback whale in the Bay ofmold were followed for more than 6300 km to the south ofIceland to the Faroe Islands. A first estimate ofstock over the period 2008 to 20 Il suggests that 442 humpback whales CV% 19.2995% [302-645] would evolve in the coastal archipelago. <..';:-.'") Carnivores are the most abundant, with among them, the spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) whose estimate indicates that 270 to 300 individuals are present over 1361 km 2 with a high specifie density (0.052 individuals / km 2,% CV 90, 16), mainly in the Leeward coast. The analysis ofthe spatial distribution and environmental factors indicates a marked geographical sectorisation ofpopulations in coastal areas, with distributions specifically influenced by bathymetry, latitude, distance to the coast and the isobath 200, depending on the species http://www.theses.fr/2012AGUY0520/document | Partager |
The tremendous development of penaeid shrimp culture across the world over the past twenty years has led to international trade in eggs, larvae and spawners of the best shrimp species for aquaculture. Trade has involved, in particular, the following species: - Penaeus japonicus from Japan to Europe, the Pacific Islands and South America - P. monodon from South-East Asia to almost all tropical countries - P. vannamei and P. stylirostris from countries along the Pacific coast of South and Central America to the United States of America, the islands of the South Pacific, countries along the Atlantic coast of the Americas and certain countries in Africa. In the 1980s, research conducted by American and French teams enabled the breeding of stocks of spawners in captivity. This resulted in the establishment of lines of captive broodstock outside natural areas of distribution, and the development of new breeding farms in previously unproductive regions. Trade related to movements of these species is facilitated by the absence of legislation in most countries; even when such legislation does exist, it is not always applied These practices have led to the rapid development of world shrimp production, but have also contributed to the dissemination of pathogens. In recent years, the occurrence of serious epizootics - occasioning heavy losses world-wide - has led to a more cautious approach involving trade of post-larvae obtained from captive broodstock in which thorough control measures have been implemented for known diseases. Trade in wild shrimp will probably be abandoned progressively, to avoid the risk of introducing new pathogens. The main challenges for research in the near future are the development of diagnostic tools, to enable continuous control of captive broodstock, and the selection of strains which are resistant to the principal pathogens affecting these species. Intensive marine fish farming in the Mediterranean islands : present state and perpectives Auteur(s) : Paquotte, Philippe Lacroix, Denis Éditeur(s) : Actes du colloque, April 28-30 1997 Résumé : Due to favourable environmental conditions and political will, marine fish farming has developed recently around the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean area is characterised by a large number of islands which are extremely diversified from geographical, political or socioeconomic point of views. As a matter of fact, it turns out that almost a third of the Mediterranean fish farming production comes from these islands which have proven to offer good conditions for the development of that new activity. The reasons why somany enterprises have been established on islands are very diverse. Taking advantage of good environmental conditions is the most common motivation, since islands are usually less submitted to constraints due to town extension, industry development or intensive agriculture. Moreover, as far as European Union countries are concerned, incentive policy towards ultraperipheral or late development regions has made it possible to attribute specific subsidies to islands for aquaculture in the aim of more employment and wealth. Like any other economic activity, aquaculture has to face some specific constraints due to the insular context. Transport to and from the islands is more expensive and less regular, which has a negative impact on the price competitiveness of the insular products. Local markets are often too small to make it possible for the enterprises to develop first at a domestic level and to take advantage of economies of scale. Thanks to their positive and attractive world-wide image, Mediterranean islands could promote the quality of their products on the basis of geographical origin, of quality of the environment or of specific production processes. Information networks implementation and marketing approach in terms of image are challenges Mediterranean islands have to take up in order to supply the large European seafood market with quality products. 1ère partie Auteur(s) : Collot, Julien Patriat, Martin Rouillard, Pierrick Pelletier, Bernard Loubersac, Lionel Éditeur(s) : Neidine Editeurs Résumé : The object of this article is to offer a synthesis of the knowledge clarifying the originality and the diversity of the submarine geological formations of the New Caledonian EEZ. A reminder is given onto the geologic history of the region, based upon the dislocation of the Gondwana Continent, the opening of the Tasman Sea, the presence of submarine volcanism, the setting up of heavy peridotitic rocks, the building up of the Fairway and Lord Howe Ridges and of sedimentary basins, the formation of volcanic domes and sea-mounts or guyots, the subduction along the Vanuatu Trench, the uplift of the Loyalty Islands, the development of carbonated ptatforms around the islands etc.... Of this complex history ensues an exceptional submarine geo-diversity. After this presentation the article clarifies the methods and the tools used in marine geosciences to map, explore, observe, analyze, sample, that they are embarked or are autonomous, teleoperated or inhabited systems. A chapter describes the programs which were set up since about forty years and the results obtained as well as the scientific teams concerned with. In conclusion, based on the unpublished character of this geo-diversity, the article introduces the second text to come in a next issue of theTai Kona magazine, text which will focus on the scientific, economic (mineral resources), environmental (deep biodiversity) and risks (seismicity) challenges that are worn by one of the most original submarine geologic context in the world. This activity involves a risk of accidental bites on divers that can be quite severe or even fatal. Objectives: To determine if ecotourism companies' liability can be engaged in the context of bites on scuba divers in presence of hand-feeding practices, supporting the legitimacy of financial compensation for the victims. Methods: We analyzed the development from the mid-eighties to 2010 of shark-based ecotourism through artificial provisioning practices in Moorea Island (French Polynesia) and more specifically the features and motivation of two bites on divers by Sicklefin Lemon sharks. Results: The specific practice of hand-feeding can be considered as a facilitating factor for accidental bites on divers, potentially involving the diving operator's responsibility. Conclusions: Our findings should support the technical work of experts that might be called in such cases. Analyse technico-économique de projets d'élevage d'ombrine (Sciaenops ocellata) en cages flottantes à la Martinique Auteur(s) : Houel, S Falguiere, Jean-claude Paquotte, Philippe Résumé : The availability in interesting sites and the zootechnical performances of tropical fish are two impo rt ant assets in favor of the development of fish farming in the Caribbean islands. This repor presents a technical and financial analysis of red drum farming projects in floating cages in Martinique(French West Indies). This project analysis makes it possible to compare the economic feasability of a small-scale production system with that of a semi-industrial one submitted to different technical constraints. The main criteria of the project analysis are the profitability of the funded capital, the financial feasability during the buildup period, the profitability at a steady state and the cost price. Production costs are hi gher in the the small-scale enterprises than in the semi-industrial ones, thanks to better capita] productivity and better labour productivity. An analysis of sensitivity to the variations ofbiological and economical parameters is also contained in the report. The results of these studies indicate that Caribbean fish farming could be profitable, due to the rapid buildup of the facilities and to the short production cycles. Nevertheless, attention should be paid to the risk of storms and hurricanes in this part of the world. Moreover, the analysis of sensitivity highlights the great influence of seed price. Islands were studied for a long time as simple peripheral territories, territories which flesh out the seamless continuation of continental logic, meaningless territories without the prism and perspective of metropolitan power. Through the field of the island studies, critical questions cross various island experiences and their context of development and their configurations; or otherwise study specific temporalities, connectivities and materialities, in the context of globalization. To study islands requires taking the measure of these territories, far from any monolithic vision, to analyze their space with regard to their social and political realities, to identify their economic clout and their context of development and the legacies of the history, in consideration of their geographical neighbourhood. It is a question of considering the exogenous logics which make the island and interrogate its internal dynamics. The subject of study is the island, "island" as object, the island in the management of its space, the definition of its territorial project, the positioning of the island in its environmental perspective and the opportunities it enjoys and the strategies it deploys in the globalized economy. The wealth of scholarship of and about islands and island societies extends beyond the simple spatial frame of the island; ‘the Island’ can be understood as a synecdoche, a convenient, manageable and reasonable microcosm of the continent. They have a crucial role in protecting inland and rich lagoonal ecosystems. Erosion and sand transfers on these island barriers during extreme events such as tropical storms or typhoons remain poorly investigated. This work focuses on a multi-scales nalysis (season to decade) of the morphodynamics of Wan-Tzu-Liao sand barrier subjected to extreme waves and sea surges. We combine topographic measurements of the emerged beach at seasonal scale between 2011 to 2012 and long-term (1993-2009) shoreline changes using aerial photographs and satellite images. At the seasonal scale, during Monsoon, the sand was taken from the beach-front and transported seaward outside the study area. During typhoons season, 12 typhoons drove a beach recovery process resulting in a seaward shoreline shift. This annual behavior is discussed in term of roll-over process of the barrier. At the decadal scale, the shoreline changes evidence cross-shore processes in the north part of the barrier and longshore processes in the south. Although the chronic landward migration displays several stages, the strong losses of the barrier area occurs only since 2004 and call into question the general concept of conservation of mass during the roll-over of a barrier. Tourism, sovereignty and supranationalism in a changing world : experiences from islands and coastal areas Auteur(s) : Thimothy, Dallen J. Loading the player... Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles et de la Guyane CEREGMIA : Centre d'études et de recherche en économie, gestion et modélisation informatique appliquée Université des Antilles et de la Guyane CEREGMIA : Centre d'études et de recherche en économie, gestion et modélisation informatique appliquée Résumé : This paper examines the notion of sovereignty in an ever-changing postmodern world and its implications for tourism. New spaces have been created, old spaces have been united, and traditional barriers have been torn down. These and other manifestations of globalization are particularly poignant in island and coastal destinations. Empirical examples will be provided from Europe, North America, the Caribbean, and the Arctic to illustrate shifting notions of absolute sovereignty into supranationalist associations, cross-border cooperative relations, and in some cases, more austere extremes in asserting state sovereignty. All of these changes have salient implications for tourism from planning, marketing, and policy perspectives. Our datarevealed a home reef area (residency rate of 44.9%) with an increased activity revealed by movements at dawn anddusk toward and between two adjacent reef passages, probably for foraging. The fish was absent from its residentreef between October and December 2010 and 2012, corresponding to the time known for spawning aggregationsof this species in New Caledonia. A skipped spawning seems to have occurred in 2011. We hope these data will becomplemented in the future by locating the spawning site or sites and thus provide adequate conservation measures. The Coral Sea links two World Heritage Sites, the Australian Great Barrier Reefs and the New Caledonian coral reefs. It would be fitting to create a Marine Protected Area for the Chesterfield Islands between these two major conservationareas of the sea. This study highlights the importance of tourism issues for the tropical islands. The singularity of the spaces is too often overlooked because of the strength of fantasized representations of the tropical island which is seen as a paradise, a place of accomplishment desires unlimited with an easy life, with its sunny shores, between coral reefs and white sandy beaches lined with coconut trees. These intangible wealth are based on real resources, abundant and vulnerable, like the emblematic image of coral reefs. Although the tropical island destinations are not supported the weight of the major touristic regions of the world but their flows should be reconsidered in the light of the characteristics of these territories (small size, load population, shortage of land, limits of resources) that require defining specific indicators. ––––– In the nowadays context of "globalization", climatic variation and great anthropization of the biosphere, the Lesser Antilles appear as a marginal world. In a political point of view, those islands offer a greatly distinct and fractured image. The same fact can also be observed in an economic, linguistic and, in a certain measure, cultural perspective. Despite of such a statement, those territories of the Caribbean basin keep economic and landscape resources whom survival depends on the re-establishment of the great ecologic structures implying a productive articulation between the natural, the urban and the agricultural. It seems pertinent to imagine a development on the level of the archipelago based upon complementarity since each constituent presents a limited number of earth and marine biologic reserves which do not guarantee an autosubsistance in energy and first nessecity productivity. A lasting development of the Lesser Antilles supposes a necessary and commun administrative, scientific, technical and agricultural management within the setting of a Caribbean functionally unified. Facing the biocenotic unity, a useful strategy, based on a similar and diversified organization in the exploitation of biophisic resources, must be erected. Such statements could be considered as utopic, regarding the situation of politic and economic division in the Caribbean nowadays. However, in the future, the survival of those insular societies will imply a lasting development lying upon an efficient relationship between Man and environment. https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00003054 Droits : info:eu-repo/semantics/OpenAccess halshs-00003054 https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00003054 https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00003054/document https://halshs.archives-ouvertes.fr/halshs-00003054/file/Devpt-durable_JOSEPH-PHILIPPE.pdf | Partager |
The Challenge of Performing Aerobic. Exercise in Tropical Environments:Applied Knowledge and Perspectives Auteur(s) : Hue, Olivier Auteurs secondaires : Adaptations au Climat Tropical, Exercice et Santé (ACTES) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience The tropical climate is unique in that the seasons are dominated by the movement of the tropical rain belt, resulting in dry and wet seasons rather than the four-season pattern of changes in temperature and day length seen in other parts of the world. More than 33% of the world population lives in the humid tropics, which are characterized by consistently high monthly temperatures and rainfall that exceeds evapotranspiration for most days of the year. Both the 2014 Football World Cup (in Brazil) and the 2016 Olympic Games (in Rio de Janeiro) will take place in this climate. This review focuses on the effects of the tropical environment on human exercise performance, with a special emphasis on prolonged aerobic exercise, such as swimming, cycling, and running. Some of the data were collected in Guadeloupe, the French West Indies Island where all the French teams will be training for the 2016 Olympic Games. We will first fully define the tropical climate and its effects on performance in these sports. Then we will discuss the types of adaptation that help to enhance performance in this climate, as well as the issues concerning the prescription of adequate training loads. We will conclude with some perspectives for future research. Observations sous-marines des communautes de poissons agregees autour des DCP en Martinique: resultats preliminaires Auteur(s) : Laurans, Martial Taquet, Marc Reynal, Lionel Lagin, Alain-sabin Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Fishing with a beach seine for catching small pelagic fishes is a traditional activity in Martinique. Since the early eighties, an important decrease in the number of fishermen practising this activity has been recorded. In the context of high exploitation of reef resources, the beach seine presents a low selectivity, catching too many juveniles of demersal fish. The fads established in coastal areas, have been successfully used in others regions of the world for exploiting small pelagics. Thus, it could allow to favour a change of exploitation style of these resources in Martinique. In partnership, Ifremer, the Regional Council and the Fishing Committee have began an evaluation of the potentialities for this type of structures around the island. To achieve this study, several experimental coastal fads have been established in different places. Surveys by subaquatic observations are periodically carried out to compare the attractive power of different aggregation devices (colour, shape, volume) and understand the factors influencing the determinism of the aggregation (biotic and abiotic). The results presented and discussed correspond to the initial stage of this study which should be pursued in the next months. However, the incidence of this cancer is highly variable, depending on the region of the world. This variability is largely accounted for by differences in access to care, but also by environmental conditions and the ethnogeographic origins of the populations. The French West Indies--the archipelago of Guadeloupe and the island of Martinique--are unique in terms of their geography, environment and the lifestyle and origins of their populations. We report the incidence and mortality rates for prostate cancer in the French West Indies and also provide the first description of the major clinical and anatomical characteristics of this disease in this region. Tourism Incognita: Experiencing the Liminal Edge of Destination Places Auteur(s) : Lew, Alan A. Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : In the age of European exploration, terra incognita referred to lands that were largely unknown to Europeans. In the world of contemporary tourism, tourism incognita refers to the lands and experiences that are largely unknown to the global mass tourism industry (tourism cognita). Tourism incognita includes specialty niche tourisms that operate on the edge and beyond of mass tourism, as well as the entire world of non-tourism places. Examples of tourism cognita and tourism incognita that are discussed include: Dubai and Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and the Tonle Sap, and the scuba diving destination of Manado on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Tourism incognita is shown to be vital to the success of the tourism economy because the places and experiences of tourism incognita are part of the imagination that drives the decision and desire to travel to a distant land. This paper studies the stages of the development of the port of Marin (Martinique). In the space of a score of years, the port became one of the principal places of reception of the sailing ships in the islands of the Caribbean Sea. The new tourist and recreation uses are at the origin of a reorganization of the local economy. The rise of navigation gives a new identity to the place which resembles moreover more one tourist station open on the international one. The development of the port of Marin fits from now on in logics regional and international of the world of the sailing. The development of the small island territories is often approached under the angle of the vulnerability, the limits and other handicaps which penalize inevitably their growth perspectives. However, it is noticed that some islands display nowadays among the most prosperous economies to the world. The object of this reflection is to propose a frame to study the small islands, the evolution of their positioning and trajectories of development. It’s interesting to see how small islands, with their different political statuses and economic dependences, manage their development in the globalized economy by using conveniently their peculiarity.
