The separation of the germ line from the soma is a classic concept in animal biology, and depending on species is thought to involve fate determination either by maternally localized germ plasm (''preformation'' or ``maternal inheritance'') or by inductive signaling (classically termed ``epigenesis'' or ``zygotic induction''). The latter mechanism is generally considered to operate in non-bilaterian organisms such as cnidarians and sponges, in which germ cell fate is determined at adult stages from multipotent stem cells. We have found in the hydrozoan cnidarian Clytia hemisphaerica that the multipotent ``interstitial'' cells (i-cells) in larvae and adult medusae, from which germ cells derive, express a set of conserved germ cell markers: Vasa, Nanos1, Piwi and PL10. In situ hybridization analyses unexpectedly revealed maternal mRNAs for all these genes highly concentrated in a germ plasm-like region at the egg animal pole and inherited by the i-cell lineage, strongly suggesting i-cell fate determination by inheritance of animal-localized factors. On the other hand, experimental tests showed that i-cells can form by epigenetic mechanisms in Clytia, since larvae derived from both animal and vegetal blastomeres separated during cleavage stages developed equivalent i-cell populations. Thus Clytia embryos appear to have maternal germ plasm inherited by i-cells but also the potential to form these cells by zygotic induction. Reassessment of available data indicates that maternally localized germ plasm molecular components were plausibly present in the common cnidarian/bilaterian ancestor, but that their role may not have been strictly deterministic.

Résumé : La compétitivité touristique est un concept dont l’importance est aujourd’hui largement reconnue. La plupart des travaux consacrés à ce thème l’ont abordé jusqu’ici sous différents aspects, mais sans qu’aucun modèle théorique n’ait réussi à notre connaissance à établir les liens empiriques qui existent entre tourisme et compétitivité. Cette étude tente de combler cette lacune, en proposant d’explorer, à l’aide de la technique de cointégration et du modèle à correction d’erreur, dans un contexte bivarié, la relation empirique qui existe entre tourisme et compétitivité, comme condition préalable à l’application du test de causalité de Granger. Cette procédure est adoptée et appliquée au cas des Antilles françaises (Guadeloupe et Martinique) sur la période 1990-2010. Les résultats révèlent l’existence d’une relation de cointégration entre compétitivité et activité touristique. Cependant, les tests de causalité de Granger, basés sur un modèle à correction d’erreurs indiquent qu’il n’existe pas de causalité ou d’impact unidirectionnel ou bidirectionnel entre variation de la recette touristique/PIB (proxy du développement touristique) et variation du PIB réel par habitant (proxy de la compétitivité). Par conséquent, l’hypothèse de la croissance tirée par le tourisme ne peut être inférée pour la Guadeloupe et la Martinique. Il s’agit d’enseignements majeurs dont devraient tenir compte les autorités responsables de cette activité.
The tourism competitiveness is an important concept today. The most studies investigate this theme from different ways. However, there are few studies about empirical link between tourism and competitiveness. This paper, thus attempts to examine the empirical relationship between these two variables. It uses the cointegration and error correction model (ECM) in a bivariate context as a precondition to apply Granger causality tests. This procedure was carried out in the case of French West Indies’s tourism industry during 1990-2010. The results show that there is a long-term relationship between tourism and competitiveness. In addition, Granger causality tests reveal no one-directional or bi-directional impact in the case of tourism receipts and GDP. Therefore, tourism-led growth hypothesis (TLG) cannot be inferred for French West Indies’s economy as a major concern of destination managers.

Résumé : L’ingénierie agroécologique vise à produire des savoirs actionnables, pour concevoir des systèmes de cultures économiquement et écologiquement performants, par la valorisation de régulations naturelles. Notre problématique est centrée sur la santé des cultures, et plus particulièrement sur la bactérie phytopathogène Ralstonia solanacearum, agent du flétrissement bactérien alors qu’une souche extrêmement agressive menace la production de tomates en plein champ en Martinique. La nécessité d’explorer et de développer des alternatives aux méthodes conventionnelles de protection des plantes (variétés résistantes, pesticides), actuellement inefficaces, invite à la mise en œuvre d’une démarche de conception innovante. Nos travaux montrent que la mobilisation d’une barrière rhizosphérique est une stratégie de régulation biologique alternative. Différents processus y contribuent, telle que la mycorhization, symbiose entre racines et champignons mycorhiziens à arbuscules, présents dans la plupart des sols. Nous montrons que la mobilisation de réseaux de mycorhizes indigènes à partir d’un sol agricole permet une mycorhization précoce de la tomate. De plus, l’association de plantes aux propriétés mycorhizotrophes et assainissantes en conditions contrôlées montre des effets bioprotecteurs partiels et ouvre de nouvelles perspectives de combinaisons entre processus. Ces combinaisons sont mobilisables par des leviers d’actions multi-scalaires. Nous avons produit une grille d’analyse générique de ces leviers d’action pour la conception, par des trajectoires d’innovation multidirectionnelles, de « systèmes de culture bioprotégés ». Dans le contexte agricole martiniquais, une démarche d’apprentissage permet en effet l’émergence d’une dynamique de co-conception de systèmes de cultures recourant aux plantes mycorhizotrophes. Nos travaux proposent des outils pour une exploration collective de nouvelles stratégies de gestion durable de la santé des cultures.
Agroecological engineering aims to produce actionable knowledge to design economically and environmentally efficient cropping systems, based on the exploitation of natural regulation mechanisms. Our issue is centered on crop health, especially on the plant pathogenic bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum (bacterial wilt agent), of which an extremely aggressive strain threatens field tomato production in Martinique. The need to explore and develop alternatives to conventional methods of plant protection (resistant varieties, pesticides), ineffective in our case, calls for the implementation of an innovative design approach. Our work shows that the protection of the roots via the formation of a self-sustaining rhizospheric barrier may be an alternative biological control strategy. Different processes contribute, such as mycorrhizal symbiosis between roots and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, which are present in most soils. We show that the mobilization of indigenous mycorrhizal networks from an agricultural soil allows early mycorrhization of tomatoes. In addition, the association of plants with mycorrhizal and sanitizing properties in controlled conditions showed partial bioprotective effects and opens up new prospects for combinations between processes. These combinations may be exploited in various ways. We produced a generic analysis grid of key levers to design "healthy cropping systems " through multi-directional innovation trajectories. In Martinique's agricultural context, a learning process allows the emergence of a dynamic co-design of cropping systems using mycorrhizal plants. Our work thus provides tools for collective exploration of new sustainable management strategies for crop health.

Les recherches relatives aux croyances et connaissances des enseignants constituent un ensemble assez disparate. La définition même du concept de croyance ainsi que la distinction entre croyance et connaissance sont objets de controverse. En revanche, à la question des catégories de croyances et de connaissances mobilisées par les enseignants dans le cadre de leur métier correspondent des réponses plutôt convergentes. Après avoir résumé les contributions majeures concernant ces thématiques, la présente note de synthèse aborde une problématique cruciale eu égard à la formation des enseignants : les croyances et connaissances des enseignants évoluent-elles et si oui, dans quelles conditions ? Plusieurs courants de recherche sont examinés dans cette perspective : les recherches portant sur les changements dits « naturels », un ensemble auquel nous adjoignons celles portant sur les stades de développement ponctuant la carrière des enseignants ; les études s’attachant à mesurer les effets des programmes de formation des enseignants dont la plupart concernent la formation initiale ; les recherches relevant du courant nommé staff development. Une section porte sur les croyances des enseignants débutants, car les recherches menées à ce sujet permettent de mieux comprendre les études évaluant les effets des programmes de formation. La discussion finale est articulée autour du constat assez général de la grande difficulté à faire évoluer les croyances des enseignants. Nous détaillons diverses hypothèses qui ont été avancées pour tenter d’expliquer la relative imperméabilité de ces croyances aux processus de formation. Nous soulevons ensuite une question, à nos yeux essentielle et pourtant rarement débattue : existe-t-il de meilleures croyances que d’autres ? Enfin nous terminons par une discussion de l’apport de Leuchter qui permet de recadrer la problématique des changements qui s’opèrent au niveau des croyances et connaissances des enseignants.

This paper focuses on the study of the behavior of a genetic algorithm based classier system, the Adapted Pittsburgh Classier System (A.P.C.S), on maze type environments containing aliasing squares. This type of environment is often used in reinforcement learning literature to assess the performances of learning methods when facing problems containing non markovian situations. Through this study, we discuss on the performance of the APCS upon two mazes (Woods 101 and Maze E2) and also on the eciency of an improvement of the APCS learning method inspired from the XCS: the covering mechanism. We manage to show that, without any memory mechanism, the APCS is able to build and to keep accurate strategies to produce regular sub-optimal solution to these maze problems. This statement is shown through a comparison between the results obtained by the XCS on two specic maze problems and those obtained by the APCS.

Résumé : In order to have a standardised database gathering most information on New Caledonian prawn farms a software, called “Stylog-module ferme”, was developed and implemented by Ifremer with the help of shrimp farmers. Data recording results in more than 2 million data from 250 crops since the beginning of the project (2003). The main objective is to help the researchers in understanding the processes taking place in a cultured pond. It also provides a follow-up of the prawn farming industry (evolution of management practices, health surveillance system…) and to facilitate sharing of information between the different partners of the industry (prawn farmers, research and local authorities). Finally, this decision-making tool also helps shrimp farmers for routine crop management. This poster presents the method and tools used to create this database, from the definition of specifications, in close relation with end users, to the implementation of a real project structure, including all partners (users committee and steering committee, agreement of confidentiality). It also shows some examples resulting from the analysis of these data (investigating good management practices indicators, publishing technical bulletins or specific data analysis for research…). Finally, the networking (Extranet) of this base seems to present real perspectives in sharing information, and analysis capacity.
Afin de disposer d'une base de données regroupant un maximum d'informations collectées sur les fermes de grossissement de crevettes de Nouvelle-Calédonie, dans un format informatisé et standardisé, un logiciel nommé « Stylog – module ferme » a été développé par l'Ifremer en lien avec les aquaculteurs. L'archivage des données a permis de collecter depuis le début de sa conception (2003) plus de 2 millions de données représentant près de 250 élevages. Les objectifs principaux de cette base sont d'aider les chercheurs dans la compréhension de phénomènes pouvant survenir dans un bassin d'élevage, d'assurer un suivi de la filière (évolution des pratiques zootechniques, veille clinique…) et de faciliter les échanges d'informations entre les différents partenaires de la filière (aquaculteurs privés, recherche, institutions). Enfin, cet outil d'aide à la décision permet aux aquaculteurs de gérer leurs élevages au quotidien. Ce poster explique d'une part, la méthode et les outils utilisés pour créer cette base de données, de la réalisation du cahier des charges, en lien étroit avec les utilisateurs finaux, à la mise en place d'une réelle structure projet regroupant les différents partenaires (comité des utilisateurs et comité de pilotage, convention de confidentialité). D'autre part, il présente quelques exemples de résultats en termes d'utilisation de ces données (recherche d'indicateurs de qualité d'élevage, édition de bulletins techniques, analyses de données spécifiques à la recherche…). Enfin, la mise en réseau (Extranet) de cette base semble présenter de réelles perspectives en termes de partage de l'information et de capacité d'analyses.

La question des langues dans les espaces créoles français n'échappe pas au chercheur qui entreprend de saisir le fonctionnement de ces collectivités humaines singulières pour en proposer une intelligence à ses contemporains. Sans entrer dans un débat scientifique purement linguistique, il apparaît difficile d'éluder le développement général de ce thème dans les départements d'outre-mer, ainsi que ses répercussions dans les espaces publics concernés. L'extension des usages du créole dynamise en l'élargissant, la recherche sur l'objet, même si la diffusion de résultats reste encore trop modeste. L'explosion de phénomènes liés à ce que l'on a pris coutume d'appeler la modernité (urbanisation, communication, etc.) travaillent nos sociétés en profondeur. Une approche fine des processus de changement que connaissent ces aires appelle une élucidation incontournable du réel linguistique. La question des langues dans nos sociétés ne laisse pas le chercheur en Sciences humaines et sociales, indifférent d'autant que le thème déborde les seuls aspects de la recherche en linguistique. Il suffit pour s'en convaincre, d'en observer l'écho médiatique (local/national), la proximité avec les discours sur l'identité culturelle, ou encore les formes du débat sur l'enseignement du créole dans différents champs (presse, discours politique, domaine intellectuel et scientifique). Entamer un travail de déconstruction des statuts et des représentations associés aux langues en présence permettrait sans doute de fournir des éléments de réponse. Dans cette perspective, le présent texte se veut porteur d'une contribution épistémologique. Il pose la question linguistique dans les univers créoles français (et singulièrement aux Antilles) de manière résolument critique. Sa prétention vient de l'urgence de dépassionner un débat d'importance pour nos sociétés dans la mise au jour d'un acteur social créole capable de faire face aux défis toujours plus complexes qui se présentent à lui. L'idée même d'un acteur social créole devrait d'ailleurs, occuper une place essentielle dans notre activité de recherche. Ainsi, à travers le couple langues/sociétés, nous nous proposons d'observer les rapports qu'entretiennent la recherche en linguistique et l'espace public, de cerner les figures diverses que prend le sujet-chercheur et enfin, d'éclairer les enjeux sociaux de la recherche scientifique dans nos aires créoles. 1. La créolistique : un apport de la recherche en linguistique L'ampleur du débat public sur le créole dans nos sociétés, avec parfois ses glissements paroxysmiques a de quoi surprendre. C'est que le débat dont aucun observateur avisé ne se plaindra, demeure intrinsèquement lié aux points de Olivier PULVAR 168 crispation qui se manifestent dans l'opinion (relayée par certains de ses leaders) quant à l'existence d'un créole écrit, aux modalités de son écriture et, aux critères de sa généralisation dans le cadre de son enseignement comme langue. Il renvoie pourtant, aux concepts que pratiquent couramment les chercheurs en linguistique : normalisation, standardisation ou encore aménagement linguistique. On comprend la complexité mais aussi l'impérieuse nécessité d'une clarification pour le non spécialiste. S'initier au travail du linguiste, approcher le contexte sociolinguistique en espaces créolophones, saisir la posture des chercheurs créolistes, représentent autant d'étapes qui, autorisent une approche plus sereine du problème. L’article propose d’interroger les rapports qu’entretiennent la recherche sur les faits de langue et l’espace public dans les Outremers français créolophones.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor medications (SSRIs) are the first lines of treatment for maternal affective disorders, and are prescribed to up to 10% of pregnant women. Concern has been raised about how perinatal exposure to these medications affect offspring neurobehavioral outcomes, particularly those related to social interactions, as recent research has reported conflicting results related to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) risk in children prenatally exposed to SSRIs. Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate the effects of perinatal exposure to the SSRI fluoxetine on social play behaviors and the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal system, using a model of pre-gestational maternal stress. We also investigated synaptic proteins in the CA2, CA3, and dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, as well as number of immature neurons in the granule cell layer, as both measures of plasticity in the hippocampus have been linked to social behaviors. In pre-adolescent male and female Sprague-Dawley rat offspring, main findings show that perinatal fluoxetine prevents the negative effect of maternal stress on sibling play behavior. However, perinatal fluoxetine increased social aggressive play with a novel conspecific in both sexes and decreased time grooming a novel conspecific in males only. Perinatal fluoxetine also increased serum corticosteroid binding globulin levels, 5-HT levels in the hippocampus, and pre-synaptic density assessed via synaptophysin in the dentate gyrus. Social interaction was significantly correlated with changes in plasticity in the CA2 region of the hippocampus. Pre-gestational maternal stress exposure resulted in significantly decreased rates of hippocampal neurogenesis and synaptophysin density in the dentate gyrus of pre-adolescent males, but not females. Together, these results further characterize the role of perinatal SSRIs, maternal stress prior to conception, and sex/gender on developing social behaviors and related plasticity in the hippocampus of pre-adolescent offspring.

Résumé : SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). It particularly shows that Syndrome 93 outbreaks could be observed on this farm from 1990. The analysis highlights the particular climatic conditions in New Caledonia from 1990 to 1995 (drought) and their potential impact on the production. The development of this very particular process of physical and topographic differential evolution of the pond bottom under wind action (accumulation and digging) and its consequences on pond preparation is explained. This work takes a close look at the grow-out management : age and quality of post larvae, pond stocking with pre-grown animals, feed characteristics and management, water exchange management and pumping capacity, strategy on density and size of harvested animals. The results have been assessed using a distinctive tool, the "survival differential", allowing inter-pond comparisons within a site, inter-farms comparisons over pluri-annual periods of time. >From the commented farm results over a 20 year period, we could distinguish the principal factors responsible for the drop of grow-out capacity of some ponds. We have outlined a conceptual description of the different parameters leading to the decrease of survival, an epidemiological scenario and a synoptic table of the history of events and their relative severity. The study draws the hypothesis of a cumulative effect of positive factors, which could have led back to satisfying production results: a physical and biochemical restoration of pond bottoms, a modified and standardized grow-out management, an appropriate pumping capacity and the come back of adequate climatic conditions. This case study illustrates the concept of « flexibility » of the farming capacity and the sustainability of prawn farming in New Caledonia. The clear objective of this 20 year historic investigation was to get relevant information, in order to improve the understanding on the "summer syndrome" which hits two farms at the moment, and to participate in the hypothesis under study by the DAC (2005). We also tried to make the new farmers aware of the fragility of the pond ecosystem, and give some common-sense advices in the hope that such problems will not happen again in other places.
La ferme de SODACAL, conçue à l'origine comme une ferme de démonstration pour le développement d'une filière d'aquaculture exportatrice de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie a connu une phase de croissance exponentielle de sa production de 1984 à 1992 (jusqu'à 400 t/an), puis une chute brutale en 1993 (250 t/an) qui s'est prolongée jusqu'en 1997 et enfin une reprise à partir de 1998 pour arriver à une stabilisation autour de 420 t/an depuis 1999. L'étude inventorie les dysfonctionnements observés avant et pendant la crise de production. Parmi ceux-ci sont évoqués les épisodes de mortalité de crevettes, d'autres désordres biologiques (décollements de tapis benthique et « hécatombes » de crabes et de poissons), l'état délétère des fonds (sédiments réduits et odeur d'hydrogène sulfuré). Elle permet notamment de montrer que des épisodes de mortalité typiques du Syndrome 93 pouvaient être observés sur cette ferme dès 1990. L'étude met en évidence les conditions climatiques remarquables qui ont sévi en Nouvelle-Calédonie de 1990 à 1995 (sécheresse) et leur impact probable sur les élevages. La genèse du phénomène très particulier d'évolution physique et topographique des fonds des bassins par l'effet du vent (accumulation et creusement) et des conséquences sur la préparation des bassins est explicitée. Ce travail aborde la gestion zootechnique : l'âge et la « qualité » des post larves, la pratique des ensemencements à partir d'animaux pré grossis, la gestion de l'alimentation et la nature de la provende, le contrôle du renouvellement d'eau et la capacité de pompage, le choix des densités et du calibre des animaux récoltés. Les résultats ont pu être évalués à travers un outil original «le différentiel de survie », permettant des comparaisons inter-bassins au sein du site, inter-fermes à des périodes pluri annuelles distinctes. A partir des résultats commentés de la ferme obtenus sur 20 années, on a pu distinguer les principaux facteurs qui ont provoqué cette chute d'aptitude culturale de certains bassins. Un schéma conceptuel des différents paramètres ayant conduit à la baisse des survies, un scénario épidémiologique ainsi qu'un tableau synoptique de la chronologie des évènements et de leur relative sévérité sont esquissés. Le rapport ébauche l'hypothèse d'un cumul de causes favorables qui ont permis le retour à des résultats zootechniques satisfaisants : une réhabilitation physique et biochimique des fonds de bassins, une zootechnie modifiée et standardisée, une capacité de pompage adéquate et une climatologie de nouveau favorable. Cette étude de cas permet ainsi d'illustrer les notions d « élasticité » de l'aptitude culturale et de durabilité de la crevetticulture en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Le but de cette enquête historique sur 20 ans est l'acquisition d'informations pertinentes permettant d'améliorer la compréhension du « Syndrome d'été » qui affecte actuellement deux fermes de production et ainsi aider à compléter le scénario hypothétique avancé par le Dac (2005). Enfin, au travers de cet historique, on a cherché également à sensibiliser les nouveaux opérateurs de la filière sur la fragilité de l'écosystème-bassin et présenter quelques conseils de bon sens pour éviter que de tels phénomènes ne se reproduisent ailleurs.

In this work, we propose a novel approach for the discovery of frequent patterns in a social network on the basis of both vertex attributes and link frequency. With an analogy to the traditional task of mining frequent item sets, we show that the issue addressed can be formulated in terms of a conceptual analysis that elicits conceptual links. A social-based conceptual link is a synthetic representation of a set of links between groups of vertexes that share similar internal properties. We propose a first algorithm that optimizes the search into the concept lattice of conceptual links and extracts maximal frequent conceptual links. We study the performances of our solution and give experimental results obtained on a sample example. Finally we show that the set of conceptual links extracted provides a conceptual view of the social network.

Résumé : La prostitution est une problématique très intéressante d’une part parce qu’elle est transversale à tous les temps, à toutes les classes sociales, à tous les espaces, et d’autre part parce qu’il s’agit d’un fléau qui se conjugue le plus souvent au féminin. Il s’agit à mon sens du versant spécifique d’une problématique universelle dont personne ne peut s’affranchir sans mettre en jeu l’ensemble de la condition humaine. En effet, la prostitution est le lieu où convergent et se concentrent de façon exacerbée tous les maux d’une société. La femme est malgré elle au centre de ce système dans lequel on retrouve les frustrations, les rapports de domination, de pouvoir, la violence, la misère, la corruption, l’aliénation… La prostitution, tout comme le concept de genre, est une construction sociale, dans laquelle les femmes sont enfermées réellement et symboliquement.D’autre part, si les maux d’une société sont décuplés dans le système de la prostitution, nulle part ailleurs n’existe un tel abîme entre fantasme et réalité. C’est le lieu des fausses représentations et des euphémismes comme le montrent ces deux expressions édulcorées « zones de tolérance » et « femmes publiques ». A Cuba, malgré les tentatives d’éradication de la prostitution dans les premières décennies qui suivirent le triomphe de la Révolution de 1959, la chute du bloc soviétique et la période de pénurie qui s’ensuivit donnèrent lieu à un retour de cette prostitution, sous de nouvelles formes qui persistent aujourd’hui. Cependant, il fut une époque, celle de la première République (1902-1958) durant laquelle Cuba, rongée par un système néocolonial, connût une recrudescence de ce phénomène, dans des proportions jamais égalées. Une époque somme toute récente où les zones de tolérance, espaces où étaient regroupées les maisons closes, occupaient une grande partie de La Havane coloniale ainsi que des quartiers entiers à travers l’île. A l’intérieur de ces zones très lucratives dont profitaient à la fois les proxénètes, policiers, politiques et hommes d’affaires, les femmes cubaines, mais également, dans une grande proportion des Françaises victimes de la traite des Blanches, se trouvaient au cœur d’un système qui étaient à lui seul le symptôme de la frustration néocoloniale, mais également de l’exacerbation du patriarcat.Cette problématique, on ne peut plus actuelle, convoque la pluridisciplinarité, c’est pourquoi j’ai eu recours à des témoignages de prostituées depuis le début du siècle jusqu’à la Révolution, recueillis et publiés à Cuba. Je me suis penchée sur les différents discours sur la prostitution de l’époque, discours politiques et féministes. Les rapports de police, les plaintes déposées par des femmes, les comptes rendus de procès, et les descriptions des médecins-hygiénistes sont autant de sources qui viennent corroborer les témoignages.
The republican era in Cuba is a complex and difficult one for the Cuban population. 1898 remains engraved in people’s memories as being a time of great disillusion for a population who, having freed itself from Spanish colonial domination, was deprived of independence by the United States of America. Three years of American intervention sufficed to put power bases into place, guarantee maximal exploitation conditions and organize the legal framework of the American domination over Cuba by means of the Platt Amendment in 1901. The protectorate set up by the United States, followed by a neocolonial system in 1934, relies upon the collaboration of presidents and corrupt governments succeeding each other in power. Corruption, nepotism and violence are put in place in a society in which inequality is dramatically worsening and all moral values are disintegrating. In this context and in a Cuban society governed with patriarchal rules, women are the first victims of the system. After the wars of independence, the only options they have are marriage, work or prostitution. Legitimate marriage is only available to a privileged few. With regards to employment, only 9.8% of women have the opportunity to work and this percentage didn’t change until 1959. It was at this time that prostitution reached unprecedented levels. It wasn’t just the case of a few marginalized women but of thousands of mothers, wives, widows and working women who were trapped in this alienating condition, forced to sell their bodies. Legislation and violence are used to control and restrict the work space for prostitutes, removing these ‘streetwalkers’ from the public eye, grouping them together in tolerance zones with very strict rules, which are in reality in the hands of Cuban and French procurers, and subjecting them to constant inspections carried out by hygienists who physically and symbolically assault women’s bodies. What is more, speeches about prostitution, whether made by politicians, feminists, journalists, doctors or mere observers, contribute significantly to a certain representation of these women. While debates about prostitution have recently shaken public opinion, this work refers back to an episode of Cuba’s history which brings us to reflect upon the evolution of the phenomenon and on its protean nature.

The number of satellites and sensors devoted to Earth observation has become increasingly elevated, delivering extensive data, especially images. At the same time, the access to such data and the tools needed to process them has considerably improved. In the presence of such data flow, we need automatic image interpretation methods, especially when it comes to the monitoring and prediction of environmental and societal changes in highly dynamic socio-environmental contexts. This could be accomplished via artificial intelligence. The concept described here relies on the induction of classification rules that explicitly take into account structural knowledge, using Aleph, an Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) system, combined with a multi-class classification procedure. This methodology was used to monitor changes in land cover/use of the French Guiana coastline. One hundred and fifty-eight classification rules were induced from 3 diachronic land cover/use maps including 38 classes. These rules were expressed in first order logic language, which makes them easily understandable by non-experts. A 10-fold cross-validation gave significant average values of 84.62%, 99.57% and 77.22% for classification accuracy, specificity and sensitivity, respectively. Our methodology could be beneficial to automatically classify new objects and to facilitate object-based classification procedures.

The published literature related to distributed parameter systems theoryis quite large, and it is not feasible in a single book to give a detailedreview on the wide historical development of all of it. Our choice of whatto cover was motivated by the following consideration. Since distributedparameter systems evolve in time and space, the research investigationson their analysis and control focus on considering the whole system domainfor any study. We feel strongly that within this research field, animportant consideration was missing; that of considering that the systemmay give raise to prescribed subdomains (regions) where one has toachieve an objective. This is the case of so many applications rangingfrom engineering to life sciences. For that reason, covering classical prerequisitein analysis and control areas, we have devoted the book to theextension of the classical distributed parameter results to regional ones.Students of mathematics do not come into contacts with distributedparameter systems during their classes. They are introduced to themwhen they start research and often they are influenced by the knowledgeand the advice of experimented scientists. This was our case at the verybeginning of these research investigations in the mid 70’s. We would liketo express our special thanks to many of them and mainly late ProfessorAnthony J. Pritchard (University of Warwick, GB) and late Professor J.L. Lions (College de France) who were so encouraging in front of our determinationin driving an academic carrier. Background: Infant exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may contribute to obesity. However, many studies so far have been small, focused on transplacental exposure, used an inappropriate measure to assess postnatal exposure through breastfeeding if any, or did not discern between prenatal and postnatal effects.Objectives: We investigated prenatal and postnatal exposure to POPs and infant growth (a predictor of obesity).Methods: We pooled data from seven European birth cohorts with biomarker concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyl 153 (PCB-153) (n = 2,487), and p,p´-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p´-DDE) (n = 1,864), estimating prenatal and postnatal POPs exposure using a validated pharmacokinetic model. Growth was change in weight-for-age z-score between birth and 24 months. Per compound, multilevel models were fitted with either POPs total exposure from conception to 24 months or prenatal or postnatal exposure.Results: We found a significant increase in growth associated with p,p´-DDE, seemingly due to prenatal exposure (per interquartile increase in exposure, adjusted β = 0.12; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.22). Due to heterogeneity across cohorts, this estimate cannot be considered precise, but does indicate that an association with infant growth is present on average. In contrast, a significant decrease in growth was associated with postnatal PCB-153 exposure (β = –0.10; 95% CI: –0.19, –0.01).Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the largest study to date of POPs exposure and infant growth, and it contains state-of-the-art exposure modeling. Prenatal p,p´-DDE was associated with increased infant growth, and postnatal PCB-153 with decreased growth at European exposure levels.

We show how to introduce the Value at Risk (VaR) concept in the analysis of the adaptation of the shape of a soft bed to a flow knowing the Probability Density Function (PDF) of the responses of the shape to flow perturbations (bed receptivity). Our aim is to quantify our confidence on simulation scenarios by an available morphodynamic model for the shape. The approach permits to perform this task at low complexity as it does not require any sampling of the bed receptivity parameter space. The paper goes beyond stationarity for the variability of the bed receptivity by linking its dynamics to the bottom morphodynamics through an original transport equation for the local bed receptivity standard deviation. The approach has been applied to the analysis of bed morphodynamics based on minimization principles. The results show the importance of including uncertainty information during the coupling and not only eventually through simple margins on the results.

Résumé : Ce numéro met en perspective l’approche développementaliste et la dimension dialogique du tourisme. Les auteurs successifs y interrogent l’équation tourisme, culture et développement, par le prisme de la patrimonialisation.L’émergence puis le développement, dans les années soixante-dix, d’un tourisme culturel ont largement contribué à favoriser la prise de conscience des populations et des politiques, ainsi qu’à formaliser la nécessité d’une nouvelle approche des discours s’agissant des espaces naturels et du patrimoine historique et immatériel. Des regards croisés de juristes, d’anthropologues et de géographes, se dégage une problématique qui fait écho à un constat largement partagé : les connaissances sur les applications et les instruments des orientations politiques internationales, de même que sur leurs liens avec les identités sociales et ethniques, restent insuffisantes.Les enjeux de la patrimonialisation requièrent donc que l’on se pose, dans le domaine considéré, la question de la relation entre les concepts, les discours et les politiques, et que l’on esquisse, à partir des expériences rapportées, les contours de réponses susceptibles d’y être apportées.
This issue puts into perspective the development-centric vision and the dialogic dimension of tourism. The successive authors examine the relationship between tourism, culture, and development, in the light of heritage.In the 1970s, the emergence and the growth of cultural tourism contributed significantly to raise awareness among ordinary people and politicians, as well as to formalize the need for a new approach to discourse about natural spaces and historical and intangible heritage. The overlapping perspectives of legal experts, anthropologists, and geographers, draw out a set of problems that echoes an observation shared by many: the knowledge on the applications and the instruments of international policy guidance, as well as the knowledge on their relationship with social and ethnic identity, is still inadequate.hen dealing with the issues at stake in the heritage field, it is thus necessary to question the relationship between concepts, discourse, and policies, and to outline the basis of possible solutions from the experience covered.

The mechanism for tree orientation in angiosperms is based on the production of high tensile stress on the upper side of the inclined axis. In many species, the stress level is strongly related to the presence of a peculiar layer, called the G-layer, in the fibre cell wall. The structure of the G-layer has recently been described as a hydrogel thanks to N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms of supercritically dried samples showing a high mesoporosity (pores size from 2-50 nm). This led us to revisit the concept of the G-layer that had been, until now, only described from anatomical observation. Adsorption isotherms of both normal wood and tension wood have been measured on six tropical species. Measurements show that mesoporosity is high in tension wood with a typical thick G-layer while it is much less with a thinner G-layer, sometimes no more than normal wood. The mesoporosity of tension wood species without a G-layer is as low as in normal wood. Not depending on the amount of pores, the pore size distribution is always centred around 6-12 nm. These results suggest that, among species producing fibres with a G-layer, large structural differences of the G-layer exist between species.

Résumé : Payao is a traditional concept, which has been successfully commercialized to increase the landings of several species valuable to the country's export and local industries. It has become one of the most important developments in pelagic fishing that significantly contributed to increased tuna production and expansion of purse seine and other fishing gears. The introduction of the payao in tuna fishing in 1975 triggered the rapid development of the tuna and small pelagic fishery. With limited management schemes and strategies, however, unstable tuna and tuna-like species production was experienced in the 1980s and 1990s. In this paper, the evolution and development of the payao with emphasis on the technological aspect are reviewed. The present practices and techniques of payao in various parts of the country, including its structure, ownership, distribution, and fishing operations are discussed. Monitoring results of purse seine/ringnet operations including handline using payao in Celebes Sea and Western Luzon are presented to compare fishing styles and techniques, payao designs and species caught. The fishing gears in various regions of the country for harvesting payao are enumerated and discussed. The inshore and offshore payaos in terms of sea depth, location, designs, fishing methods and catch composition are also compared. Fishing companies and fisherfolk associations involved in payao operation are presented to determine extent of utilization and involvement in the municipal and commercial sectors of the fishing industry. The issues and problems concerning the use of payao, and its biological, economic impact as well as management aspect are presented. Recommendations are given for future research and actions.

In science learning, context is an important dimension of any scientific object or phenomenon, and context-dependent variations prove to be as critical for a deep understanding as are abstract concepts, laws or rules. Our hypothesis is that a context gap can be illuminating to highlight the respective general-particular aspects of an object or phenomenon. Furthermore, provoking a perturbation during the learning process to obtain the emergence of such an event could be a productive tutoring strategy. We introduce the emergence of context effects as a problem space, to be modeled in the system. We propose a model of the contextual dimension, associated with an analytical view of its modeling, based on a metaphor in physics.
