Service commun de la documentation University of Suriname Extrait de : 52e congrès annuel de la Société caribéenne des plantes alimentaires / 52nd annual meeting of the Caribbean food crops society (CFCS), du 10 au 16 juillet 2016. INRA, CFCS Description : The import data from the Ministry of Trade indicates that Suriname has increased pesticides imports over the last five years. According to research evidence, as much as 80% of potential production in various crops including rice would be lost as a result of agricultural pests without crop protection measures. Even though the benefits of chemical pesticides use are clear, negative health and environmental impacts of their use are also evident. In lieu of this information a study was conducted to determine small rice farmers? perceptions on their knowledge of pesticide use, and safety of pesticides in rice production For this investigation a questionnaire was adapted from a pesticide use survey to generate and collect meaningful data on perceptions of small rice farmer?s knowledge and practices related to pesticide use and safety aspects in rice production in Nickerie. The sample population consisted of 200 small rice farmers.?The collected data was analyzed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. Descriptive statistics and correlation were used to describe the data. Findings reveal that the rice farmers are male, on the average older than 50 years and have more than 15 years of experience with rice production. Results also reveal that farmers perceive the recommended dosage as too little and therefore increase the dosage. They often mix different types of pesticides and do not use all of their protective equipment while spraying. Based on the results it is recommended to develop pesticide policies to stimulate farmers to practice safe pesticide use in Suriname. Sexual and Gender Minorities Baseline: The Situation in Guyana Auteur(s) : Magda Fiona Wills Éditeur(s) : UNDP Guyana UNDP Guyana ( Guyana ) Résumé : (Funding) Support for the development of the technical infrastructure and partner training provided by the United States Department of Education TICFIA program. While the global response to HIV and AIDS has realized several successes in achieving universal access to prevention, care and treatment to date, challenges persist in ensuring equal access to these services for most at risk populations. The epidemiology of HIV reflects a stark disparity in access to prevention and treatment services for neglected most-at risk populations, such as men who have sex with men (MSM). World-wide, MSM often experience higher rates of HIV relative to the total population. The reasons for this dynamic are multi-faceted and include high risk behaviors, and cultural as well as structural barriers. For MSM in developing countries, for example, basic services for prevention and treatment of HIV infection have yet to reach the large majority of men. Homophobia and discrimination limit access of MSM to prevention services and markedly increase vulnerability, as do criminalization of same-sex behavior. Decriminalization of same-sex behavior is a structural intervention for prevention of HIV infection and has recently been embraced by a nonbinding statement from the United Nations (Beyrer C,Clin Infect Dis. 2010 May 15;50 Suppl 3:S108-13) In the Caribbean, all of the above mentioned barriers exist. In fact, recent evidence demonstrates that there is a correlation between the decriminalization of homosexuality and lower rates of HIV (UNAIDS). This correlation is attributed to improved access to services. Therefore, The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has recently launched an initiative to address the current situation regarding men who have sex with men in Guyana where the HIV prevalence in this population is 19.4% in contrast to 1.8% in the total population. This rapid assessment has been commissioned to supplement two previous studies that were conducted in Guyana in informing the design of upcoming activities to support local capacity building to enhance access to services and respect for the human rights protections for MSM. Unfortunately, in Guyana, like much of the Caribbean, MSM tend to be a hard to reach population, perhaps due to elevated levels of stigma and discrimination and difficulty in accessing men who might participate in high risk same sex behaviors yet do not self-identify as an MSM. As a result, there is a relative paucity of data concerning the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of this total population in Guyana. (i.e. those who self –identify and those who do not) The baseline report is organized as follows: the methodology is explained followed by the study limitations, the review (literature and desk). The report then proceeds with describing the reality of work and working with sexual and gender minorities in Guyana, the status quo and entry points. The main findings of the capacity assessment and focus groups are then discussed. Issues relating to the uniformed forces and health services providers are then presented followed by discussions and conclusions. Droits : All rights reserved by the source institution. | Partager |
One brown girl and a Jamaica story Auteur(s) : Redcam, Tom MacDermot, Thomas Éditeur(s) : Jamaica Times Printery Jamaica Times Printery Résumé : (Biographical) Information on the author from Wikipedia 12 Sept. 2013, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_MacDermot: Thomas MacDermot (1870-1933) was a Jamaican poet, novelist, and editor, editing the Jamaica Times for over twenty years. He was "probably the first Jamaican writer to assert the claim of the West Indies to a distinctive place within English-speaking culture." Thomas MacDermot was born in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, of Irish ancestry. He worked to promote Jamaican literature through all of his writing, starting a weekly short story contest in the Jamaica Times in 1899. Notable among the young writers he helped and encouraged is Claude McKay.[1] In 1903, he started the All Jamaica Library, a series of novellas and short stories written by Jamaicans about Jamaica that were reasonably priced to encourage local readers. MacDermot also published under the pseudonym Tom Redcam. Alongside his work as a journalist, he wrote two novels. The first, Becka’s Buckra Baby, is said to mark the beginning of modern Caribbean writing. MacDermot's poems were not collected into a single volume until 1951. He was posthumously proclaimed Jamaica's first Poet Laureate for the period 1910-33 by the Poetry League of Jamaica. MacDermot retired because of illness in 1922. He died in an English nursing home in 1933. Caribbean Droits : Applicable rights reserved. 52717520 http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00078555/00001 | Partager |
In the context of a tourism crisis in the north, a globalized economy and an increase of mobility, a change in the forms of tourism development seems to occur in peripheral areas. In some tourism areas and due to conflicts over the use of natural resources, alternative recreational practices arise that combine economic needs and socio-environmental concerns.Our article analyzes the appearance of scientific tourism in the "non-tourist" region of Aysén, in Chilean Patagonia. Actors of a territory unite according to specific cultural poles and thematic axes through experiential research and innovative scientific mediation pilot projects. On this pioneer front, an informal network of stakeholders coordinates its actions to address the social and environmental issues of their territory. Operators and service providers for scientific tourism create an innovative offer in a participatory process. An alternative tourism system, focused on protecting the environment, the culture and social dynamics of the host community, promotes the acquisition and sharing of knowledge between scientists, local actors and visitors.Is scientific tourism part of a global evolution of tourism practices? By proposing to go beyond established boundaries, of recreational activities and work, everyday places and leisure areas, it appears as the expression of an “After-Tourism”. The hybridization of practices, a scientific approach associated with the spirit of the discovery inherent of the travel experience, seems to respond to the challenges of the community confronted to the rise of a globalized tourism. While tourism has always been thought of in terms of transfer of skills, models and engineering from the North to the South, a periphery offers new frameworks of thought, action and participation that renew the meaning of travel. Mediations in the information communication at digital technologies innovation use prism in cultural institutions. Auteur(s) : TIETSE, Samuel Auteurs secondaires : Médiation, Information, Communication, Art (MICA) ; Université Bordeaux Montaigne Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience The social networks high level rise led many organizations to invest in information and communication digital technologies (ICDT). Innovation by use theory is convened here to analyze the informational practices taking place in cultural institutions. We try to show in what logics using those technologies linked at digital social networks by certain institutions leaders recalled users influential divert meditational practices and profile a new digital identity of the professional as well as the library assigned role. With the advent of information technology, the information explosion and the resurgence of media changed the practices of users of libraries that use more digital and new communication tools. These developments within the University training interrogate us on the issue that may represent the documentary training in the needs and expectations of users for a better use of the information. Our research says around digital social media that punctuate the lives of students and which raise questions on their impacts in access to academic literature. Observed that skills to master by users are still obscured in conventional formations proposed in academic libraries that are necessary to produce a better reception of documentary and informational knowledge to interact a consumerist confinement of information. Based on a methodology with exploratory talks to a questionnaire with information, communication and documentation professionals, our study shows that this is in digital convergence that a change may occur among students. This convergence is part of formations that are moving towards digital cultures combining both education media declining the critical spirit, centered learning and technical culture which must take into account both the knowledge of the tools, but also the training tools. It is this vision of the ecology of the training that foreshadowed in our analysis and looming for academic libraries as a strong axis of anchoring in higher education around a dynamic oriented towards a digital documentary convergence. These recommendations are considered in the context of collective action within the University with real mediation between the different actors of education and training, and a central place for the University Library as the place of training for digital transversalities. http://www.theses.fr/2014AGUY0844 | Partager |

Transitioning economies, human development, and environmental stress can harm this livelihood. Here we focus on a transitioning social-ecological system as a case study (Moorea, French Polynesia). We review fishing practices and three decades of effort and landing estimates with the broader goal of informing management. Fishery activities in Moorea are quite challenging to quantify because of the diversity of gears used, the lack of centralized access points or markets, the high participation rates of the population in the fishery, and the overlapping cultural and economic motivations to catch fish. Compounding this challenging diversity, we lack a basic understanding of the complex interplay between the cultural, subsistence, and commercial use of Moorea's reefs. In Moorea, we found an order of magnitude gap between estimates of fishery yield produced by catch monitoring methods (2 t km −2 ∼ year −1) and estimates produced using consumption or participatory socioeconomic consumer surveys (∼24 t km −2 year −1). Several lines of evidence suggest reef resources may be overexploited and stakeholders have a diversity of opinions as to whether trends in the stocks are a cause for concern. The reefs, however, remain ecologically resilient. The relative health of the reef is striking given the socioeconomic context. Moorea has a relatively high population density, a modern economic system linked into global flows of trade and travel, and the fishery has little remaining traditional or customary management. Other islands in the Pacific in similar contexts in Polynesia such as Hawaii, that continue to develop economically, may have small-scale fisheries that increasingly resemble Moorea. Therefore, understanding Moorea's reef fisheries may provide insight into their future. SUMMARY ANSWER: Mild analgesics induce multiple endocrine disturbances in the human adult testis in vitro. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Mild analgesics have recently been incriminated as potential endocrine disruptors. Studies of the effects of these widely used molecules on the androgenic status of men are limited and somewhat contradictory. This prompted us to investigate whether these compounds could alter the adult human testicular function. We therefore assessed in parallel the effects of paracetamol, aspirin and indomethacin on organo-cultured adult human testis and on the NCI-H295R steroid-producing human cell line. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Adult human testis explants or NCI-H295R adrenocortical human cells were cultured with 10(-4) or 10(-5) M paracetamol, aspirin or indomethacin for 24-48 h. The effect of 10(-5) M ketoconazole, used as an anti-androgenic reference molecule, was also assessed. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Testes were obtained from prostate cancer patients, who had not received any hormone therapy. The protocol was approved by the local ethics committee of Rennes, France and informed consent was given by the donors. Only testes displaying spermatogenesis, as assessed by transillumination, were used in this study. Hormone levels in the culture media were determined by radioimmunoassay (testosterone, insulin-like factor 3), Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (inhibin B) or Enzyme Immunosorbent Assay [prostaglandin (PG) D2, and PGE2]. Tissues were observed and cells counted using classical immunohistochemical methods. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: The three mild analgesics caused multiple endocrine disturbances in the adult human testis. This was particularly apparent in the interstitial compartment. Effective doses were in the same range as those measured in blood plasma following standard analgesic treatment. The production of testosterone and insulin-like factor 3 by Leydig cells was altered by exposure to all these drugs. Inhibin B production by Sertoli cells was marginally affected by aspirin only. Our experiments also revealed that mild analgesics display direct anti-PG activity, which varied depending on the drug used, the dose and the duration of exposure. Nevertheless, associations between the alteration of the PG and testosterone profiles were not systematically observed, suggesting that a combination of mechanisms of endocrine disruption is at play. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: Our studies were performed in vitro. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: We provide the first evidence that direct exposure to mild analgesics can result in multiple endocrine disturbances in the human adult testis. Caution, concerning the consumption of mild analgesics by men, should be strengthened, particularly in high-risk population subgroups such as elite athletes. Stylog : base de données pour le suivi des élevages de crevettes de Nouvelle-Calédonie Auteur(s) : Soulard, Benoit Frappier, Julie Herlin, Jose Beliaeff, Benoit Éditeur(s) : 11th Pacific Science Inter-Congress / 2nd Symposium on French Research in the Pacific, Tahiti Résumé : In order to have a standardised database gathering most information on New Caledonian prawn farms a software, called “Stylog-module ferme”, was developed and implemented by Ifremer with the help of shrimp farmers. Data recording results in more than 2 million data from 250 crops since the beginning of the project (2003). The main objective is to help the researchers in understanding the processes taking place in a cultured pond. It also provides a follow-up of the prawn farming industry (evolution of management practices, health surveillance system…) and to facilitate sharing of information between the different partners of the industry (prawn farmers, research and local authorities). Finally, this decision-making tool also helps shrimp farmers for routine crop management. This poster presents the method and tools used to create this database, from the definition of specifications, in close relation with end users, to the implementation of a real project structure, including all partners (users committee and steering committee, agreement of confidentiality). It also shows some examples resulting from the analysis of these data (investigating good management practices indicators, publishing technical bulletins or specific data analysis for research…). Finally, the networking (Extranet) of this base seems to present real perspectives in sharing information, and analysis capacity. Due to its tolerance, azithromycin is the antibiotic of choice for maintenance therapy at the dose of 250 mg per day or 500 mg × 3 per week (for body weight >55 kg). Maintenance therapy with macrolide could be proposed in selected patients with bronchiectasis or COPD with more than 3 acute exacerbations in the previous year or decreased lung function despite compliance with optimum treatment. The risk of sudden cardiac death with azithromycin is rare and controversial. It should be avoided in patients with a high baseline risk of cardiovascular disease, QT>450 msec, pulse rate>100 bpm and potential drug interactions, particularly those known to cause QT prolongation. It is recommended to search for hearing deficit (audiometry) and sputum culture positive for mycobacteria. Patients must also be aware that it can rapidly lead to macrolide resistance in commensal or pathogenic flora. Follow-up evaluation every 3 month can be proposed with medical history (hearing deficit) and electrocardiography. After one year, the treatment should be stopped in the absence of reduction in the frequency of exacerbations. Yet it is also addressed to regional institutions, several of which would like to equip themselves with an economic monitor. In his "report on the modernisation of the Interprofessional Organisation of Fishing and Marine Farming", the president of the CCPM makes the development of economic information one of the main principles of reform. At the same time, a growing number of regional authorities wish to equip themselves with economic monitors, with the concern of controlling the management and future of their sector of fishing and marine farming. The two problems are similar insomuch as:
(i) it is a matter, in both cases, of responding to the same questions:
- what information?
- according to what means of collection, processing and distribution?
- to what ends?
(ii) although the concerns at regional and national levels differ, they are interdependent:
- the report on modernisation foresees a devolution of competencies to the regional level;
- the information needs of each of the levels will be partially satisfied by information available in the other.
The first part of this document examines the concerns to which economic and social information should respond; the second addresses the building of indicators likely to help the responsible parties through clarification of the choices and arbitrages they must confront. The references marked in the text refer to publications containing many illustrations of types of information, indicators, economic calculations and models.
Amazonian populations have developed an abundant knowledge of the disease and its remedies. Therefore, we undertook to review traditional antileishmanial plants in Amazonia and have developed new tools to analyze this somewhat dispersed information.Material and methods: A literature review of traditional remedies for cutaneous/mucocutaneous leishmaniasis in the Amazon was conducted and the data obtained was used to calculate distribution indexes designed to highlight the most relevant uses in Amazonia. The cultural distribution index represents the distribution rate of a given taxon among different cultural groups and was calculated as the ratio of the number of groups using the taxon to the total number of groups cited. The geographical distribution index allowed us to quantify spatial distribution of a taxon's uses in Amazonia and was calculated geometrically by measuring the average distance between the points where uses have been reported and the barycenter of those points. The general distribution index was defined as an arithmetic combination of the previous two and provides information on both cultural and spatial criteria.Results: 475 use reports, concerning 291 botanical species belonging to 83 families have been gathered depicted from 29 sources. Uses concern 34 cultural groups. While the use of some taxa appears to be Pan Amazonian, some others are clearly restricted to small geographical regions. Particular attention has been paid to the recipes and beliefs surrounding treatments. Topical application of the remedies dominated the other means of administration and this deserves particular attention as the main treatments against Neotropical leishmaniasis are painful systemic injections. The data set was analyzed using the previously defined distribution indexes and the most relevant taxa were further discussed from a phytochemical and pharmacological point of view.Conclusions: The Amazonian biodiversity and cultural heritage host a fantastic amount of data whose systematic investigation should allow a better large-scale understanding of the dynamics of traditional therapies and the consequent discovery of therapeutic solutions for neglected diseases. Distribution indices are indeed powerful tools for emphasizing the most relevant treatments against a given disease and should be very useful in the meta-analysis of other regional pharmacopeia. This focus on renowned remedies that have not yet benefitted from extended laboratory studies, could stimulate future research on new treatments of natural origin for leishmaniasis. L'élevage de la crevette tropicale d'eau douce Auteur(s) : Griessinger, Jean-michel Lacroix, Denis Gondouin, Philippe Résumé : This book represents a two year study by a team of French biologists to collect, summarise and present the experience and knowledge gained in the rearing of the giant freshwater prawn, not only in the French overseas territories but also in the main countries which are developing this culture. This document comprises four parts :
- The first describes the world market. The prawn rearing is already an economic reality in the tropical world, the United States and in Europe.
- The second on shows that, although the culture techniques are quite complex, production systems can be adapted to local conditions and markets.
- The third part is a practical guide, both for investors and farmers, giving all necessary data to start-up and monitor a project in the best conditions.
- The final part summarises the main elements of the biology of this species, in order that people interested in its development may have a better understanding of its life history.
The authors were based at the aquaculture laboratory of the Ifremer station of French Guiana from 1989 to 1990 and had 15 years previous experience of this culture in Tahiti and the Caribbean. Regarding this initial complete French synthesis on this species in a special care has been given to balance accurate scientific reporting with the objective of reaching a wider audience.
Activities of Cruise-Ship Employees in Cozumel, Mexico Auteur(s) : Marie Van Broeck, Anne Dierckx, Guy Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : Despite the increasing importance of cruise tourism worldwide, very little is known about the lives of cruise-ship employees, and how they use their free time at the ports of call. This paper presents the results of a small-scale exploratory research on the activities of cruise crew and staff members on the island of Cozumel, Mexico, an important port of call for Caribbean routes. Conducted in 2009, qualitative research for this paper included participant observation and several informal conversations and semi-structured interviews with twenty cruise-ship employees and six owners and employees of local businesses. Our conclusions confirm other authors' findings and provide fresh information on the factors that determine these individuals' choices of activities, places and company. Availability of time and money depends on each worker's place in the labor hierarchy, but choices are also influenced by cultural background. More in-depth research will be needed at the demand as well as the offer sides to complement these preliminary findings. Significant uses of herbal remedies to address self limiting health problems are identified through participatory ethnopharmacological surveys and are the subject of scientific validation. The results are then disseminated to several audiences.While comprising an international scientific contribution to academic research, the TRAMIL network activities value the popular and local knowledge. This fertile relationship between local knowledge and scientific research draws answers to key challenges for Caribbean societies: improving the health of Caribbean populations first and foremost, but also indirectly developing economic prospects in various sectors (agriculture, industry, tourism, and health).The success of TRAMIL is based on a rigorous methodology and on a noteworthy informal network of collaborators invested at different levels of the program, locally and / or regionally. TRAMIL is one of the few trilingual networks that have been active for nearly forty years, well before the popularization of the Internet, in more than twenty Caribbean territories. It involves people and communities, health care professionals, researchers in many disciplines, and information and documentation professionals.This paper proposes to explore these new ways of working together and the accomplishments to which they give rise by presenting some concrete examples of the TRAMIL program in Puerto Rico and examining the program's website and the complex challenges faced by the stakeholders involved in its implementation.
