Implications of the cementation of beach sediments for the recreational use of the beach Auteur(s) : Vousdoukas, Michalis Velegrakis, Adonis F. Kontogianni, Areti Makrykosta, Efstratia-natalia Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Beach sediment cementation (beachrock formation) is a sedimentary process that can transform significant sections of beaches into rock outcrops. This contribution reports the results of two questionnaire surveys (one focusing on foreign tourists and the other on local people) carried out in coastal resorts of the island of Lesbos (Greece), on the perceptions of beach users regarding the impacts of beachrocks on their recreational activities. The survey focusing on foreign tourists showed that the majority of the interviewees took notice of the formations and commented negatively on them. Although most of the interviewees did not consider beachrocks a significant safety risk, a considerable proportion of the sample stated that beachrocks influenced their beach ratings that they would prefer beachrock-free beaches and would be willing to contribute financially to preventative and protective measures. In contrast, the results of the survey focusing on local people, who are more familiar with the phenomenon, showed a high perception of beachrock-related risks and limited beachrock tolerance. In addition to the safety risks that the irregular, slippery, beachrock surfaces may pose to beach users, beachrocks may also degrade beach aesthetics. promote beach sediment erosion and decrease the beach carrying capacity. As beachrocks are a common attribute of tropical, subtropical and low-temperate beaches that are typically associated with major tourist destinations, and are likely to spread under global warming conditions, they may be considered as a significant threat to the coastal tourist industry. Today, cruising remains an essentially American affair, dominated by North American clients whose preferred destination is the Caribbean Sea. American cruise circuits continue to extend and diversify from the Panama Canal to the edge of Alaska. Meanwhile, cruises strengthen their position on the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas and has launched in East Asia from shores of the South China Sea to major rivers. Between continuity and recomposition, the cruise industry faces several challenges such as the limits of overcapacity (more than 6,000 passengers on board), its relationship with the host territories (ports of call), and the renewal of the “cruise” products. Données économiques maritimes françaises 1997 Auteur(s) : Kalaydjian, Regis Résumé : The purpose of this book is to value the economic significance of marine-related activities in France. Each industrial, or public non-commercial, sector is characterized by key figures relating to annual turnover, value added, employment and budget. These figures are accompanied with qualitative information on the recent development, current situation and future perspectives of the sector in terms of markets, employment and technological progress. Public and private R&D is also allowed for. Given the diversity of marine-related activities, this information aims at enabling the reader to assess their importance from a comparative angle.
From the sector-based approach it is possible to draw certain conclusions. Notably, commercial activities contributed over 1,3% of the GDP in 1995, such ratio having to be seen as a minimum estimate, worked out on the basis of available data. Seaside-related tourism is by far the most important industry. Most activities experienced a decrease in employment in the first half of the '90s. The estimated annual amount spent on R&D was over FFr 4,5 billion in the recent past period 1995-1996.
Bryant Foundation, where books, music and art indigenous to the regions were gathered. The are organized by geographical location. The Caribe Hilton was built in 1949, becoming the first Hilton hotel outside of the continental US, and thus marking the beginning of Hilton International. Designed by Osvaldo Toro and Miguel Ferrer, it originally contained 300 rooms, but has since expanded through multiple renovations (including major remodeling and grand re-opening in 1999). A staple of the Puerto Rican tourism industry, The Caribe Hilton’s frequent guests include famous entertainers, athletes, and political figures. It is also known for one of its bars, where the first Piña Colada drink was made in August 1954. Also visible in the photograph, is part of the Condado Lagoon and the historic Fortín de San Gerónimo del Boquerón, which was built in the 17th century and was crucial in the defense of San Juan against a British attack in 1797. Cruise tourism and Cruise Industry ; Tourisme de croisière et industrie de la croisière Auteur(s) : Dehoorne, Olivier Petit-Charles, Nathalie Auteurs secondaires : Lieux, Identités, eSpaces, Activités (LISA) ; Université Pascal Paoli (UPP) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Centre de Recherche en Economie, Gestion, Modélisation et Informatique Appliquée (CEREGMIA) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Université des Antilles Résumé : International audience This paper proposes a reflection on the cruise industry, the importance and scope of this industry. One of the objectives is to examine in particular the relationship between cruise lines and ports that receive cruises and excursionists. The cruise product built from the 1970s engendred a specific mass tourism. And the boat is both the means of transport and the destination. The stops have a secondary role in this logic that favors gigantism, standardization and uniformity. While gigantism known some limits, cruise products reconstructs itself spatially and innovative segments of the high-end and luxury. The analysis of the cruise industry will highlight some limits and contradictions of current development patterns. The product "cruise" has evolved considerably. It’s now the cruise ship itself (temple of consumption and enclave floating) that became the object of the Cruise, the “Destination” of the cruise line. The cruise is part of mass tourism. It’s characterized by its huge boats, rationalization and cost optimization in the context of a market increasingly globalized capital. All data that must be analyzed to understand recent developments in the cruise and repeated challenges to the host territories. Talking about "organized tourism of adventure" in the present context of outdoor leisure activities, an aberration is it? This oxymoron could be explained by the ambivalence on tourist practices that take advantage of the combination of these two forms of tourism, isn't it? "Trekking" is considered both as a specific term and as a marketing term. This duplicity gives it his specificity: a tourism based on adventure, nature and cultural discovery; nevertheless, it is included into a very organized marketing system. Wilderness, culture, sociability are sometimes the main motivations of a trip in Moroccan mountains, or sometimes they constitute one of the main reasons. In addition, motivations to participate to an organized trip in Atlas are becoming more and more diverse and affect various travelers. Imagination and dreams are supplanted by a combination, sometimes contradictory, of motivations. Tourist industry renewed these pseudo-imagination and we are now seeing their assimilation by both professionals and tourists. Adventurous experiences and industry of adventure face each other and encourage the emergence of a new tourist utopia. Record labels have had a strong influence on the spreading of Rastafarian faith and on the music that rose from the movement. In Jamaica, Rastafarianism is a powerful touristic magnet. Tourist coming to Jamaica and hoping to discover its roots are bringing tangible resources to the economy of the island. I'm looking into the impact of these economic forces on the movement in Jamaica. Finally, I focus on the evolution of the most significant aspect of the movement since it became international during the seventies. Since the 1930s, Bali has been generally seen as a traditional tourism destination quite fashionable. Nowadays, a new kind of tourism, rather esoteric if not totally spiritual, is emerging on this small “paradise” often referred as a natural untouched and cultural preserved island. To attire more international tourists, the “Island of Gods”, as the tourism promoters still name this tropical holiday paradise, is now also targeting on the industry of “well-being”. This article deals about the specificity of the local tourism activity which is based on a strong cultural identity and a rich natural and also religious heritage. Uncontrolled development of this predatory industry brings also a lot of new problems, such as pollution or acculturation. Here, our aim is to focus and analyse the real and false ties between heritage, development and tourism, always by keeping in mind that the regional motto about tourism policy still is to encourage “cultural tourism” as a real model (a “brand”, in fact) of success. We especially try to explain, in this current work (still in progress), the touristic situation in the main cultural site located on the island: Ubud. This small city, really boosting during the last decade, is worldwide reputed for the rich cultural performances and seen as “the” artistic capital of Bali. Ubud offers also a perfect example of an intense and dynamic bond between cultural heritage and economic development. Often for the best and sometimes also for the worse. In this rural but international spot, it seems that tourism business allows the local population to live in better ways and, sometimes, even to reborn, culturally speaking! Our case study shows also the big threats behind the current tourism policy: the large scale business occurred by globalization and all the tourism opportunities thus provided cannot hide the real weakness that for sure also concern the balinese way of thinking and living. Cultural tourism could rapidly be transformed in a dangerous kind of tourism of the culture, with all the big (and bad) changes the Balinese don’t want to see happening on their lovely and holy island. So, the present reflection conducts us to think more deeply on some new and alternative ways of developing tourism in Bali. Finally, our aim is to think, first by listening to the desire of the Balinese themselves, in which best manner this “last paradise” will not become a “lost paradise”. TRAMIL: about the use of medicinal plants, a novel model of collaboration in the Caribbean ; TRAMIL: a partir el uso medicinal de las plantas, un modelo único de colaboración en el Caribe ; TRAMIL : autour de l’usage médicinal des plantes, un modèle inédit de collaboration dans la Caraïbe Auteur(s) : Pajard, Anne Gavillán Suárez, Jannette Auteurs secondaires : Centre de Recherche sur les Pouvoirs Locaux dans la Caraibe (CRPLC) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Résumé : International audience TRAMIL is a research program applied to the use of medicinal plants in the Caribbean, established in the 1980s. Significant uses of herbal remedies to address self limiting health problems are identified through participatory ethnopharmacological surveys and are the subject of scientific validation. The results are then disseminated to several audiences. While comprising an international scientific contribution to academic research, the TRAMIL network activities value the popular and local knowledge. This fertile relationship between local knowledge and scientific research draws answers to key challenges for Caribbean societies: improving the health of Caribbean populations first and foremost, but also indirectly developing economic prospects in various sectors (agriculture, industry, tourism, and health). The success of TRAMIL is based on a rigorous methodology and on a noteworthy informal network of collaborators invested at different levels of the program, locally and / or regionally. TRAMIL is one of the few trilingual networks that have been active for nearly forty years, well before the popularization of the Internet, in more than twenty Caribbean territories. It involves people and communities, health care professionals, researchers in many disciplines, and information and documentation professionals. This paper proposes to explore these new ways of working together and the accomplishments to which they give rise by presenting some concrete examples of the TRAMIL program in Puerto Rico and examining the program's website and the complex challenges faced by the stakeholders involved in its implementation. French Marine Economic Data 2013 Auteur(s) : Girard, Sophie Kalaydjian, Regis Résumé : The maritime economy includes the activities linked to the sea, namely:
- Marine resource extraction: living resources and marine minerals,
- Exploitation of marine space and of physical properties of marine waters (energy plants
- using marine water as a heat sink, marine renewable energies, submarine cable laying,
- maritime and coastal construction and public works, maritime transport, Navy),
- Exploitation of seascapes (tourism, leisure, boating),
- Resource processing (of living resources and oil & gas)
- Manufacturing and service industries supplying the above exploitation activities: shipbuilding, ship repair and boat building and their suppliers, oil and gas services, financial services,
- Public services: defence; State intervention at sea and public services to maritime activities and to seafarers; public and private activities contributing to the protection of marine and coastal environment; and public research.
Since 1997, the French Marine Economic Data report, published by Ifremer, includes a set of key sectoral indicators used to value the economic significance of the French marine-related activities in terms of production and jobs, their role in the national economy, their weight in international competition and the importance of non-market public services. The analysis of the marine sectors is carried out mainly at national scale but regional indicators are also presented when they are available. The European dimension of the activities is also taken into account. Terrorism-led studies pointed out to tourism as a pleasure industry where visitors experience hedonism and luxury. Many analysts see in tourism a secular activity that intrudes in the religious forms of Middle East, while others signals to the resentment generated by unlimited luxury and ostentation these types of establishment offer. A third view is oriented to discuss a new fresh thesis. We argue that are inextricably intertwined by means of the industrial organization of labor. Nor terrorism is a monopoly of Islam, neither it is a modern phenomenon. If, on one hand, the worker union struggle resulted in a set of monetary and legal benefits for workforce, advantages that led to a mass-tourism, no less truth was that, on another hand, those claims which defied the capitalist order were rejected and expulsed towards the periphery of system. With no fear to any mistake, this validates the idea that tourism is terrorism by other means. Within society, strike and worker union organization served as two legal mechanisms to discipline workers, but beyond the control of society, the same was labeled as terrorism. At time the logic of production was decentralized, as main target of terrorism, politicians and important celebrities set the pace to lay people and tourists. By understanding the role played by luxury at this stage, is a good first step to acknowledge that organization of labor and terrorism converge. Through the comparative analysis of two archaeological sites in Colombia: Ciudad Perdida and San Agustín this study aims to reveal the identity and territory issues linked with the material, intangible and natural heritage and the development of tourism. The history of the acknowledgment of heritage and the analysis of the emergence of those sites as touristic destinations allow to identify all actors involved in both processes: State, scientists, touristic industry, local populations and authorities and native peoples. Through this first analysis it is possible to understand that those patrimonial and touristic processes generate a series of “tests of justifications” (Boltanski, Thévenot, 1991) in which several values and principles of justice are mobilised by the different actors in order to legitimate their stances. In this article the logic of disappropriation, appropriation and re-appropriation of territories is highlighted to explain how the touristic and patrimonial management of the archaeological sites appears as a tool of identity claims integrated both in the legal dynamics of Colombian multicultural policies and the postcolonial episteme of Latin America in general. Tourism Incognita: Experiencing the Liminal Edge of Destination Places Auteur(s) : Lew, Alan A. Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : In the age of European exploration, terra incognita referred to lands that were largely unknown to Europeans. In the world of contemporary tourism, tourism incognita refers to the lands and experiences that are largely unknown to the global mass tourism industry (tourism cognita). Tourism incognita includes specialty niche tourisms that operate on the edge and beyond of mass tourism, as well as the entire world of non-tourism places. Examples of tourism cognita and tourism incognita that are discussed include: Dubai and Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and the Tonle Sap, and the scuba diving destination of Manado on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Tourism incognita is shown to be vital to the success of the tourism economy because the places and experiences of tourism incognita are part of the imagination that drives the decision and desire to travel to a distant land. Cruise tourism is a sector that is rapidly expanding (16 million passengers in 2011). World Cultural Nomadictates: An Inquiry into the Trans-local Dynamics of Music Festivals in Morocco Auteur(s) : Moulay Driss, El Maarouf Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : The aim of this paper is to study Moroccan music festivals against the existing theories on globalization, while coming up with new concepts aimed at overcoming the problems often facing experts in popular culture and media studies who feel that globalization thesis lapses into fatal gestures of leveling, reductionism, and totalitarianism, especially when it tries to account for current discussions related to the circulation of artifacts and cultural texts. The general consensus has it that modern technologies have hugely altered the meaning and revolutionized the traditional functions attached to art and cultural industries. The grotesque circulation of western cultural artifacts is justifiably judged to be many times agonizing for theorists in cultural studies, linguistics and political science, etc who want to be sure that the unequal transmissions of products across the world will not harm local cultural, linguistic and economic capital of the less dominant other. Moroccan music festivals for instance are seen to be increasingly governed by a complex whirlpool of the far-too-melodramatic implications of today’s world global connections. In view of this, this paper, which borrows from data collected during between 2010 and 2011, will examine cultural industries, music festivals in general and the Essaouira festival in particular, in relation to world flows, while holding the argument that the appropriation of western artifacts locally has always been part of a not-so-novel process of mobility of what we call world cultural nomadictates (nomadic dictates). The paper gives a detailed definition of this concept and develops other new concepts (e.g. recurents, exclusives) related to the «glocal» face of culture and art in Morocco in an attempt to find an escape route outside the impasses of the globalization/cultural imperialism theses surrounding the study of cultural industries. To drive this idea home, we will open up the discussion at hand onto existing controversies around notions of place, authenticity, urbanism, tourism and consumption.
