![]() | Baitboat as a tuna aggregating device Auteur(s) : Hallier, Jean-pierre Delgado De Molina, A Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : The original baitboat fishing technique using a permanent association between the fishing boat and the tuna school has been developed by the baitboat fleet of Dakar, Senegal and is also in use in the Canary Islands. This new fishing technique, the result of 20 years of improvements still on, has induced a dramatic increase of the catch yields which, in turn, has sustained the survival and even a recent development of the fleet. This technique is based on the aggregating behaviour of tropical tunas. However, it contains a dynamic component which is not found in tuna fishing on drifting or anchored fads. The specifications of the method, its refinement over the years and its main consequences for the fishery are described together with the school exchanges between baitboats over months even from one year to the next. Based on the analysis of 1228 recoveries from 5500 tagged fish, tuna movements among associated schools, between associated schools and free schools fished by purse seiners and movements in and out of the baitboat fishing grounds help to better understand the dynamics of tunas and schools of this peculiar tuna association. These data show a very high recovery rate, a remarkable tuna fidelity to the original school for all species, a small number of recoveries within the purse seine catch as well as the rare tuna movements outside the baitboat area. The study highlights the complexity and the numerous consequences of tuna and school behaviour. ![]() | Small scale fisheries in Europe: A comparative analysis based on a selection of case studies Auteur(s) : Guyader, Olivier Berthou, Patrick Koutsikopoulos, Constantin Alban, Frederique Demaneche, Sebastien Gaspar, M. B. Eschbaum, R. Fahy, E. Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : Small-scale fisheries have traditionally received less research effort than large-scale fisheries and are generally under-studied in Europe. In spite of their comparatively low volume of catches and economic importance, small-scale fisheries are socially important and an integral part of the European coastal zone. Considering the high heterogeneity of situations and the paucity of quantitative data, we used an analytical methodology based on the comparative method. We carried out an analysis of small-scale fisheries (SSFs) in Europe based on a selection of nine case studies. Our objective was to obtain a comprehensive description of small-scale fleets covering different areas/fisheries/species, encompassing the diversity and specific conditions under which SSFs operate, in order to demonstrate the ecological and social sustainability of this often overlooked fisheries segment. A common approach formulated so that the case studies could be compared with the case histories of other competing users, required that for each set of criteria – technical, biological, socio-economic, and institutional – a set of relevant items and indicators was established. An analysis of characteristics common to the selected case studies is conducted and an attempt made to extend our comparisons to the whole of the European Union. Our results show that (as compared with large-scale fleets, their main competitor) small-scale fleets: (i) are composed of smaller vessels and, consequently, travel lower distances to fishing grounds, and are more reliant on coastal areas; (ii) have smaller crews (although the global employment figure is similar to that of large-scale fleets in Europe); (iii) use mostly, but not exclusively, passive gears; (iv) use multi-purpose fishing approaches, and can change the fish species they target during the year; (v) have lower extraction rates; (vi) have lower total capital investments (including fishing rights), turnover and costs; and (vii) have lower fuel consumption, making them less sensitive to changing oil prices. Dependence on subsidies is lower (viii). Involvement in fisheries management is variable, conservation and access regulation measures are largely local in origin. For the selected case studies, the most significant competitors are large-scale fleets, and recreational fisheries, but other sources of interaction (water quality, invasive species, etc.) cannot be ignored. ![]() | Guam Fish Aggregating Device programme Auteur(s) : Torres, A Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Installation and maintenance of FADs by the Government of Guam began in 1979, initially with funding from the Salstonstall-Kennedy Act through the Pacific Tuna Development Foundation. Current funding for the Guam FAD project is provided through the Dingell-Johnson/Wallop-Breaux Sport Fish Restoration programme, a Federal Aid Project funded by taxes collected on the purchase of fishing equipment and motorboat fuels nationwide. There are now sixteen operational FAD sites in Guam's waters. At a cost of approximately US$10,000 per system, concern for the rising costs of replacing and maintaining FAD systems has prompted the Department of Agriculture's Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (DAWR) to investigate alternative FAD maintenance strategies and system design. Several cost-cutting measures being considered include the use of reliable solar-powered navigation lights to reduce the number of maintenance trips required, and switching to a newer generation of lighter, more durable buoys and mooring systems. Average time on station for a dawr fad system is nearing two years. Interestingly, in most cases where an errant system is recovered, the failure in the mooring system was observed to occur at a depth from 35 to 500 metres. These observations have led to speculation that additional protection of the mooring line down to 500 m may result in doubling the average time on station of most FAD systems. ![]() | La pêche au vivaneau en Guyane française Auteur(s) : Prevost, Etienne Résumé : Traditionally fished by line and conical fishing basket by Venezuelan ships, the red snapper resource off the coast of French Guyana (fish belonging to the Lutjanidae family) has been experiencing intensive fishing since 1984-85 due to the boom in classic fishing techniques and the development of trawl fishing.
The study evaluates the situation of this resource's potential: biology, sampling data, bio-statistics (size and sex), size-weight relationship of the three species, specific composition of the catches, describes fishing devices and prospecting, pinpoints fishing spots, gives a distribution of the Venezuelan and Martinique fishing effort.
The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is an emblematic species of marine life. However, nowadays it is subject to many threats (poaching, by-catch). Even if there is deep growing measures for its protection, the green turtle still is an endangered species and it is listed in Appendix I of Washington Convention (CITES). In order to elaborate efficient conservation and management plans, perfect knowledge of green turtle biology, but also of its population structure and their characteristics, are needed. In this thesis, we have assessed genetic structure of green turtle populations in the South-Western Indian Ocean by using genetic tools. In all, 1551 tissue samples have been collected from our study zone and from our control site French Polynesia (37 samples). All kinds if individuals were sampled (except males in reproductive phase) from 15 sampling sites including nesting, foraging, and immature development site. We used both control region of mitochondrial DNA and 6 microsatellite loci to better infer maternal and paternal lineages. We identified 29 haplotypes in the South-Western Indian Ocean. They are distributed in 3 independent and highly divergent clades, including one composed with haplotypes from Atlantic Ocean. For 7 of these haplotypes, it was the first time they were detected in the study zone. Fifteen haplotypes were previously undescribed, distributed in all the 3 clades. These new haplotypes seem to be specific to the South-Western Indian Ocean, which is then an original zone. Besides, we found a high allelic richness. These results show the South-western Indian Ocean is rich and very diversified. This region plays an important role in the global diversity of the species. The South-Western Indian Ocean is one of the two contact zones presently known between the two metapopulations of green turtles (Atlantic-Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific). This contact induces a genetic cline based on CM8 (Atlantic) and C3 (Indo-Pacific) haplotype frequencies. Analysis of the microsatellite differentiation between individuals provides evidence of genetic exchanges between the two metapopulations in the region. The South-Western Indian Ocean participates to green turtle global genetic mixing. Studying the influence of several intrinsic and extrinsic factors on population structuring provides useful information for management plan elaboration. We found no significant difference between genetic structures of foraging females and males, contrary to immature turtles which seem to be organised in 'regional pools'. This organisation could be due to both immature natal homing and influence of oceanic currents. High mitochondrial differentiation of nesting females and low global microsatellite differentiation of our samples indicate male-mediated gene flow among populations of the study zone. The genetic composition of a sampling site presents no significant variation along the year, even if we could notice some trends. Nevertheless, it can be significantly different from a year to an other one. This may result from alternation of distinct populations on the same site. We noticed different evolution in 10 or 20 years of the genetic composition depending on the sampling site. Geographic distance seems not to have significant influence on population structuring concerning microsatellite markers. Nesting females of Saziley Beach (Mayotte Island, Comoros Archipelago) present genetic divergence from females nesting in the two other sampled beaches of this island. The observed population structure shows no contradiction with the organisation of oceanic currents in the South-Western Indian Ocean. Comparing the results from the two genetic markers used, we identified 8 genetic differentiated clusters of turtles in the study zone and at least 6 distinct populations. These clusters constitute 8 potential management units (MUs) which could serve as basis in the elaboration of conservation and management plans. Auteur(s) : Paulmier, Gerard Gervain, Paul Résumé : The principal objective of the work carried out in the deep waters adjoining the island shelf around Martinique between July 1991 and april 1992 was to establish an initial inventory of potentially exploitable deep benthic resources. The cylindrical lobster pot used during fishing experiments allowed the catch of a varied carcinological marine organisms of which six species at least have economic interest : 5 species of shrimp all belonging to the sub-order of Caridea of the Pandalidae family : Plesionika edwardsi, P. (macropoda) polyacanthomerus, P.laevis, Heterocarpus ensifer and H.laevigatus, and one species of prawn of the Nephropidae family : Eunephrops cadenasi. The yields, compared to those of commercial fishermen, were medium or good for Plesionika edwardsi and P. (macropoda) polyacanthomerus between depths of 200 - 300 metres ; for Plesionika laevis and Eunephrops cadenasi in the vicinity 500 metres ; for Heterocarpus laevigatus below 700 metres. The species Heterocarpus ensifer , of which the vertical distribution is very spread out from 170 to 600 metres, seems divided into two populations which provide good yields about 300 metres and below of 450 mètres. Data on the environment and the biology of the species where also established, especially on growth and breeding. For example growth of the pandalids is relatively rapid and their life cycle rather short, between three and four or five years according to the species. At least 2 principal egg-laying seasons occur in the annual cycle. Information is given on the isopoda of the family of Cirolanidae, Bathynomus giganteus, which could eventually, under certain conditions, become of interest to the fishermen. ![]() | The influence of the environment on the variability of monthly tuna biomass around a moored, fish-aggregating device Auteur(s) : Doray, Mathieu Petitgas, Pierre Nelson, Laetitia Mahevas, Stephanie Josse, E Reynal, Lionel Éditeur(s) : Oxford university press Résumé : Fish-aggregating devices (FADs) are increasingly used worldwide to enhance tuna catches. Meanwhile, ecosystem-based management of this fishery is constrained by a paucity of information regarding the interaction of FAD-associated tuna aggregations with their local environment. This paper reports the results of a nine-month study around a FAD moored near Martinique Island, aimed at assessing the effects of the local environment on the variability of monthly estimates of proximate tuna biomass. Dual-frequency, active acoustics provided highresolution quantitative data on the pelagic community around the FAD, from fish to micronekton forage. Geostatistics were used to compute biomass estimates of the tuna aggregation comprising most of the FADassociated fish biomass, with a sampling error of 27%. Environmental variability was summarized by a small set of principal components (PCs) derived from profiles of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen vs. depth; and maps of chlorophyll a derived from remotely sensed, sea-surface colour. A generalized linear model was used to relate tuna biomass to environmental PCs and revealed a positive correlation between tuna abundance and: i) a micronekton layer sensed at 38 kHz and potentially consisting of preferred prey at about 180 m depth; and ii) low subsurface salinity (6080 m). These favourable environmental conditions may be related to thepresence of North Brazilian Current eddies that migrating tuna follow when not temporally associated with the FADs. ![]() | Examen des prises accessoires de la pêcherie de crevettes peneides du plateau continental de la Guyane française Auteur(s) : Lemoine, Michel Vendeville, Philippe Ladurelle, Christophe Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : At this moment, the quasi-totality of the catches of the 95 licensed or French trawlers fishing on the shelf of French Guyana is thrown overboard, except for shrimps. This waste, which has been going on for 20 years in French Guyana, is the consequence a very specific production system which has just been the focus of a study by some French scientists who assessed it and tried to provide some solutions. It appears that the use of these neglected resources can be made at three different levels: 1) by making the boats keep the totality of the species they already partially keep, 2) by making them keep a series of complementary species which can be sold directly as raw fish products, 3) by collecting the leftovers for the making of sub-products or flour. ![]() | Spatially explicit fisheries simulation models for policy evaluation Auteur(s) : Pelletier, Dominique Mahevas, Stephanie Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : This paper deals with the design of modelling tools suitable for investigating the consequences of alternative policies on the dynamics of resources and fisheries, such as the evaluation of marine protected areas (MPA). We first review the numerous models that have been developed for this purpose, and compare them from several standpoints: population modelling, exploitation modelling and management measure modelling. We then present a generic fisheries simulation model, Integration of Spatial Information for FISHeries simulation (ISIS-Fish). This spatially explicit model allows quantitative policy screening for fisheries with mixed-species harvests. It may be used to investigate the effects of combined management scenarios including a variety of policies: total allowable catch (TAC), licenses, gear restrictions, MPA, etc. Fisher's response to management may be accounted for by means of decision rules conditioned on population and exploitation parameters. An application to a simple example illustrates the relevance of this kind of tool for policy screening, particularly in the case of mixed fisheries. Finally, the reviewed models and ISIS-Fish are discussed and confronted in the light of the underlying assumptions and model objectives. In the light of this discussion, we identify desirable features for fisheries simulation models aimed at policy evaluation, and particularly MPA evaluation. Tome 2 Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Biseau, Alain Charuau, Anatole Biseau, Alain Résumé : The theory of the evaluation of discards applied in phase 1 to the main eight species is described. Then, for each one, the biological parameters are calculated and diagnosis based on length cohorts analysis JONES (1981) are proposed The gadoids, whiting and cod, are heavily exploited and the catches are always recruitment dependant. The bottom species (monks, megrim, rays and Nephrops) are fully exploited or lightlhy over - exploited. Using the fisheries statistics of the data basis about the Celtic Sea, a first classification of fleets is proposed with the individual fishing powers.
![]() | Evaluation of the bioeconomic sustainability of multi-species multi-fleet fisheries under a wide range of policy options using ISIS-Fish Auteur(s) : Pelletier, Dominique Mahevas, Stephanie Drouineau, Hilaire Vermard, Youen Thebaud, Olivier Guyader, Olivier Poussind, Benjamin Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : In order to provide reliable scientific advice and support for fisheries management, it is necessary to evaluate the biological and economic sustainability of complex fisheries, such as multi-species multi-fleet fisheries. Existing policy-screening modelling tools are not fully suitable in this purpose due to either an over-simplified description of population dynamics, or due to the lack of consideration of economic aspects. In this paper, we present a package that enables quantitative bioeconomic assessment of management scenarios. Population dynamics is described through spatially- and seasonally-explicit models. Exploitation dynamics is characterized by several fishing activities with specific spatial and seasonal features, and practiced by several kinds of vessels with specific technical characteristics. Exploitation costs and revenues are considered at several levels: the fishing trip, the fishing unit (vessel and crew), and the vessel owner. The model is generic and can be used for different types of fisheries. A database is attached to the software for the storage and updating of information for each fishery. This includes the specification of model dimensions and of the parameters describing populations and exploitation. Several model assumptions regarding either population or exploitation may be adapted to suit a specific fishery. Both policies and corresponding fishers' response may be interactively specified through JAVA (TM) scripts. This version of ISIS-Fish allows for the calculation of biological and economic consequences of a range of policies, including conventional ones like catch and effort controls, and alternative policies such as marine protected areas. To facilitate policy-screening in a high-dimension parameter space, the software includes features, like interfaces for sensitivity analysis and simulation queues. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. ![]() | Evaluation méthodologique du recueil de données des pêcheries artisanales martiniquaises Auteur(s) : Gobert, Bertrand Résumé : The "assessment of Caribbean fisheries" program, started in 1986 by the Caribbean Centre, included, amongst others, the study of coastal resources in Martinique as well as their exploitation. This study is based on a large amount of data collected on landing ports through a quite intensive survey system whose methodology had to be adapted to the available means and to environmental constraints. This document brings together two other documents presenting and analysing the two methods on which this data collection is based. -Methodological assessment of the indirect activity survey for artisanal fisheries in Martinique (p.1 to 24) - Methodological assessment of the visual estimate of the catches of artisanal fisheries in Martinique (p.25 to 52). ![]() | Diversifying fishing effort in Sicilian fisheries: the case of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) Auteur(s) : Cannizzaro, L Bono, G Rizzo, P Potoshi, A Celesti, A Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : In the Sicilian fisheries, the swordfish (Xiphias gladius, Linnaeus 1758), caught from March to December with several gears which vary according to season, represents one of the most important economic resources. The size composition changes depending on the gear used, the way it is operated, the fishing area and season. The gears used for swordfish fishing (long-lines "for swordfish", drift-nets, harpoons as operated by typical boats named "feluche") mainly catch adult specimens. From August to December, a high number of very young swordfish specimens (1.5 to 4.5 kg) is also caught as by-catch during the albacore (Thunnus alalunga, Bonnaterre 1788) fishing which is carried out by a special long line and hooks only 3 cm long. It was observed that in the same season, fishing areas and with boats of similar type, the fishing of dolphin-fish (Coryphaena hippurus, Linnaeus 1758), using Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) and purse seine, is hardly practised in spite of the resource availability swordfish. With the present work, which can be regarded as an initial approach to the problem of diversifying and managing fishing effort of swordfish, albacore and dolphin-fish, their fisheries are examined and discussed, not overlooking the economic aspect, by considering weather a reallocation of fishing effort among the previously said resources might avert the risk of swordfish stock depletion. ![]() | NAMIBIE, an interface dedicated to multimedia access to coastal data and information for Integrated Coastal Zone Management processes Auteur(s) : Loubersac, Lionel Maraux, Lemsanni, Abdellah Fiandrino, Annie Jouan, Mathieu Tellier, Denis, Jacques Éditeur(s) : Littoral 2004, Aberdeen, Scotland, UK, September 2004 Résumé : NAMIBIE (a french acronym for Integrated Multimedia Navigator Within Coastal Environment Data Bases) is a specific tool which first concept has been established by Ifremer and has been developped by an association between research in the field of coastal environment, innovation in the field of new information and communication technologies and services in the field of coastal integrated management and impact studies. The objectives of this tool are to facilitate research, direct access and display of relevant multimedia coastal integrated data and information according to an interactive, widely opened and playfull interface. The principles are based upon the fact that sustainable decision making needs an optimized unterstanding of coastal processes and better consultation between actors. In this purpose the development of the tool has considered that the end-user should and could be free to look after the data and the information he needs for a particular site or environment of interest and for a specific ICZM question according to easy navigation interfaces. That is why NAMIBIE concept is based upon : - a coherent 3D representation of the coasts (i.e. from catchement areas to continental shelf and deep sea), which considers a coherent DEM from land to sea and textural representation of the environment using satellite imagery textural displays, - a 3D navigator which allows the user to fly or dive over and within the coastal environment of interest, - a multimedia database (text, graphs, image, maps, geographic objects, modelling results...) specific to the territory of interest, - an interactive interface which helps in finding relevant information associated to specific questions. The technologies used include VRML data format, integration of standard GIS format (shp, grid, img) within the navigator, integration and display of modelling data. The production chain is realized in C++ and Java scripts allow dialogue between web pages and 3D windows. Applications are presented on the coasts of Languedoc Roussillon region (French Mediterranean border) in the framework of ICZM problematics Droits : info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess http://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00089/20055/17696.pdf http://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00089/20055/ | Partager |

![]() | Trends in freshwater and marine aquaculture Auteur(s) : Lacroix, Denis Éditeur(s) : Proceedings of 3rd East-West Fisheries conference; 24-26 Nov. 1998; Copenhagen, Denmark Résumé : The demand for fish products, from freshwater and from the sea, is globally increasing ail over the world. This major trend can be explained by the development of mankind, not only in quantity (one billion people more in the last 15 years) but also because food consumption habits are changing: for southern countries, fish products consumption is first a diversification of protein sources. For northern countries, it is a new style of eating with diet, tasteful and original products coming from the attractive « new frontier » symbolised by the sea. Global/y speaking, the aquatic product consumption raised from 9 to 13 kg./unhab./year during the last 30 years. It is now clear that catches from ail fisheries cannot match this steady increase of the demand as data collected from al/ countries reveal the stagnation of the world production since the beginning of the nineties. The reasons are now well-known: over-capacity of fishing fleets, over-fishing of many stocks, poor management of harvested species which results in about 20 millions of tons of waste while the same amount is processed into fishmeal and oil, out of direct human consumption.
![]() | Underwater video techniques for observing coastal marine biodiversity: A review of sixty years of publications (1952–2012) Auteur(s) : Mallet, Delphine Pelletier, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : Underwater video techniques are increasingly used in marine ecology studies. Technological progress regarding video cameras, sensors (such as sounders), battery life and information storage make these techniques now accessible to a majority of users. However, diver-based underwater visual censuses, and catch and effort data, remain the most commonly used for observing coastal biodiversity and species. In this paper, we review the underwater video techniques that have been developed since the 1950s to investigate and/or monitor coastal biodiversity. Techniques such as remote underwater video, whether baited or not, diver-operated video and towed video are described, along with corresponding applications in the field. We then analyse the complementary of techniques, first from studies comparing video techniques with other observation techniques, whether video-based or not, and second by documenting their respective cost efficiencies. These findings are discussed with respect to current challenges in monitoring and investigating coastal biodiversity. Video should be more often considered and used, either in addition to or as an alternative to diver-based, fishing and acoustic techniques, as it may be particularly suited for monitoring coastal biodiversity in a variety of areas and on larger scales than hitherto and within an ecosystem-based approach to management and conservation.
