Therefore, for improvement in crop productivity in Suriname and most other countries, excessive application of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers is used. These result in gradual depletion of soil fertility and microbial diversity. Conventionally managed soils are found to exhibit a poorer micro flora and a lower biological activity then organically managed soils. Recently much attention is paid to organic cultivation and the use of bio fertilizers as a supplement for chemical fertilizers. VAM fungi have the potential to improve the sustainability of tomato production by improving yield and quality. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of two different concentrations of commercially available vesicular - arbuscular mycorrhiza on the plant growth and fruit production of two tomato varieties (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) in the greenhouse.The experiment was set up as a randomized factorial block design with two independent factors and consisted of six treatments and three replications. The factors were two tomato varieties: hybrid 61 and hybrid 501 and two concentrations of VAM namely 2.5 and 10 g. VAM/plant. Biomass was determined two times, at bloom initiation and at the end of the experiment. The growth parameters were measured once per week. The production was recorded only for the first two harvest times. Data was statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA. The results of this experiment showed that the VAM fungi had a positive influence (p < 0.05) on the production for both varieties of tomatoes. And it also resulted in earlier reproduction. There was no significant difference in production (p > 0.05) between the two concentrations of VAM inoculum used. We assessed soil carbon mass changes in a sandy-clayey and well-drained soil in French Guiana after forest clearing by the chop-and-mulch method and crop establishment. At the experimental site of Combi, native forest was cut down in October 2008; woody biomass was chopped and incorporated into the top 20 cm of soil. After about one year of legume and grass cover, three forms of land management were compared: grassland (Urochloa ruziziensis), maize/soybean crop rotation with disk tillage and in direct seeding without tillage. There were four replicates. We measured 14.16 kg m(-2) of carbon in 2 mm-sieved soil down to 2 m depth for the initial forest. Forest clearing did not induce significant soil compaction; neither did any specific agricultural practice. In converted soils, C stocks were measured in the 0-30 cm layer after each crop for three years. Carbon mass changes for soil fractions <2 mm (soil C stock) and >2 mm (soil C pool) in the 0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm soil layers were assessed on an equivalent soil mass basis. One year and 1.5 years after deforestation, higher C stocks (+0.64 to 1.16 kg C m(-2) yr(-1)) and C pools (+0.52 to 0.90 kg C m(-2) yr(-1)) were measured in converted soils, compared to those of the forest into the top 30 cm of soil. However, the masses of carbon in these converted soils declined later. The highest rates of carbon decrease were measured between 1.5 and 2 years after forest conversion in the <2 mm soil fraction, from 0.46 kg Cm-2 yr(-1) (in grassland soils) to 0.71 kg C m(-2) yr(-1) (in cropland under no tillage). The carbon pool declined during the third year at rates of 0.41 kg C m(-2) yr(-1) (cropland under disk tillage) to 0.76 kg C m(-2) yr(-1) (grassland soils). Three years after forest conversion, C masses in the top 30 cm of soils for grassland showed similar values than for forest. In comparison, the carbon stock in cropped soils managed under no tillage in direct seeding (without mulch) was significantly 17% and 16% lower than in forest and grassland soils, respectively. None of the studied agricultural practices succeeded in accumulating carbon from the chopped forest biomass. Fisheries are complex systems where numerous dynamics interact at various spatial and temporal scales. This complexity and the difficulty to observe marine systems are responsible for the high uncertainty surrounding fishery functioning that makes it hard to identify adequate management measures. The increasing consideration of uncertainties in diagnostics argues in favor of robust management measures rather than optimal management measures. Identifying robust management measures requires the development of models that account for complexity and uncertainty in the description and prediction of management impact as well as the identification of synthetic descriptors (indicators) of the state and dynamic of the system. The aim of this work is to propose generic methodologies for developing such tools. The methodological developments are applied to the pelagic fishery of the bay of Biscay. This fishery mainly focused on anchovy and was highly impacted by fishing ban on this species since 2005. Causes for anchovy drop in biomass either environmental or due to fishing are poorly understood, making management decision much harder in a critical environmental and economic context. The adequacy of traditional management using TAC is questioned and additional spatial management measures are proposed. Des évaluations quantitatives de l’impact de mesures de gestion sur les ressources et la viabilité des flottilles sont nécessaires pour établir des diagnostics et pour fournir des éléments d’orientation pour la gestion des pêcheries. Les pêcheries sont des systèmes complexes mettant en œuvre de nombreuses dynamiques à des échelles de temps et d’espace très variables et interagissant très fortement entre elles. Cette complexité et la difficulté d’observer les systèmes marins, conduit à une grande incertitude sur leur fonctionnement qui rend difficile la détermination des mesures de gestion adaptées. La reconnaissance de ces incertitudes, plaide de plus en plus en faveur d’une gestion robuste plutôt qu’optimale. Déterminer la robustesse des mesures de gestion nécessite le développement de modèles de description et de prédiction capable d’intégrer la complexité et l’incertitude du système, ainsi que d’outils de description synthétiques (indicateurs) de l’état et de la dynamique de la pêcherie à partir d’observations. L’objectif de ce travail est de proposer des méthodes génériques pour le développement de tels outils. Ces développements méthodologiques sont appliqués à la pêcherie pélagique du golfe de Gascogne. Cette pêcherie ciblant principalement l’anchois a été fortement perturbée par la fermeture de la pêche à cette espèce en 2005. Le déterminisme environnemental et le rôle de la pêche dans le déclin de la population d’anchois sont mal compris ce qui rend difficile la prise de décision dans un contexte économique et écologique critique. La gestion traditionnelle par TAC pourrait s’avérer insuffisante pour permettre l’exploitation durable et des mesures spatialisées sont envisagées en complément. The traditional ways of fishing, based on benthic fish exploitation, have seen the decreasing of their profitability due to the over-fishing of the narrow continental shelf offering few resources. The pelagic fishery had become the professional main source of income. This fishery equally encounter difficulties: denied rights of access in the EEZ of Caribbean islands, expensive costs of exploitation. The disposal of FADs offers new ways to the Martinique fishermen. In 1999, it was decided the disposal of a onetworko of 30 permanent FADs around Martinique. The mooring of these FADs must be followed by legal and economic adapted measures to reach the desired aim: the development of local fishery economy through a sustainable fishing practice. Therefore, the French authorities have decided to make the regional fishermen committee responsible for the management of FADs.This committee is the only one to be entitled to moor and to deliver licences to FADs. This committee, gathering all the fishing industry representatives, has regarding the french law the right of mooring and delivering licences to the FADs access, collecting fishery statistics. These data should fund research to improve the management of the fishery, care and replace FADs. This programas realisation, as well as durability, need adequate financial planning. It has been included in the European commission financing program. A cost-benefit analysis of improving trawl selectivity in the case of discards: The Nephrops norvegicus fishery in the Bay of Biscay Auteur(s) : Macher, Claire Guyader, Olivier Talidec, Catherine Bertignac, Michel Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The Nephrops trawl fishery is one of the most important fisheries in the Bay of Biscay. The fishery management essentially relies on conservation measures, a total at I owed catch (TAC) for Nephrops together with a mini mum landing size (MLS) and minimum trawl mesh size (70 mm stretched mesh). These measures have failed to prevent high discard levels of many species that characterize the fishery. Nephrops trawlers thus discard about half of their Nephrops catches in numbers (a third in weight) of which only 30% survive. Nephrops discards mainly occur in younger Nephrops age groups below the MLS. This is a waste for the already overexploited Nephrops stock as well as for the fleet. Based on a bio-economic simulation model, the paper analyses the consequences of several scenarios of improving Nephrops selectivity. The potential impacts of these scenarios on Nephrops biomass, landings, discards and economic indicators (e.g. rent) are examined and a cost-benefit analysis of each scenario is carried out. We show that a better exploitation pattern would benefit fisheries that have high level of discards. Reducing non-commercial Nephrops discards leads to positive net present values of rent with better value realized from the production potential and limited short-term losses for the fishing units. By taking account of the economic dynamics of increasing effort however, we show that selectivity measures are insufficient. Regulating access to the fishery is also required to ensure the sustainability of the fishery and a better exploitation of the production potential. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. A model-based evaluation of Marine Protected Areas: the example of eastern Baltic cod (Gadus morhua callarias L.) Spatio-temporal fishing closures [Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)] have been implemented since 1995, to protect and restore the spawning stock. However, no signs of recovery have been observed yet, either suggesting that MPAs are an inappropriate management measure or pointing towards suboptimal closure design. We used the spatially explicit fishery simulation model ISIS-Fish to evaluate proposed and implemented fishery closures, combining an age-structured population module with a multifleet exploitation module and a management module in a single model environment. The model is parameterized based on (i) the large amount of biological knowledge available for cod and (ii) an analysis of existing spatially disaggregated fishery data. As the population dynamics of eastern Baltic cod depend strongly on the climate-driven hydrographic regime, we considered two production regimes of the stock. MPAs were only effective for stock recovery when they reduced overall fishing effort. The performance of MPAs needs to be evaluated relative to environmental regimes, especially for stocks facing strong environmental variability. Reproducibility of the multi-component aspect of species diversity across different areas and scales: towards the constitution of a shortlist of complementary indices for monitoring fish diversity? However, it is still poorly understood to what extent the information provided by the various indices is complementary with regard to diversity, and to what extent this complementarity is reproducible in different situations or at different scales of observation. In the present work, we have analysed the reproducibility of the empirical relationships between 11 diversity indices related to four major aspects (components) of species diversity (species richness, rarity, evenness and species taxonomy) in order to determine whether there is a general pattern of redundancy or complementarity in diversity measures that holds across years, areas and spatial scales. We have applied this approach to groundfish diversity through the analysis of 2404 trawl hauls collected during the first large-scale annual surveys carried out using a single sampling design throughout the northern Mediterranean Sea (ranging from 36.3 to 45.7 degrees N, and 5.3 degrees W to 28 degrees E). Whatever the years, areas and scales studied, we found a strong reproducibility in the number and the nature of the main complementary components of diversity. The whole set of diversity indices considered may be roughly split into 6 complementary groups of descriptors. This result highlights that, in contrast to what is still the usual practice, monitoring diversity should not be based on only one or two of the most widely used components, even at large scale. Finally, in a context where developing tools for monitoring diversity is considered as a high priority worldwide, the strong reproducibility of the relationships between diversity indices we observed offers a basis for discussion of the feasibility and relevance of proposing a general shortlist of indices for monitoring diversity at different management scales. From a typology of French fleets fishing in Celtic Sea, the carried out "métiers" (target-species + areas) are pointed out, which allows to define spatio-temporal "boxes". In each compartment, at a given time, the interactive components between fleets and stocks are known. The principle of the model consists to distribute, for each time interval, the fleets in each box. The allocation of fishing effort is assigned by two coefficients : "adherence" and "preference", expressing the abilities of fleets to seize the opportunities. Thus, it is possible to assess the consequences of usual management measures : quotas, mesh size, limitation of fishing effort, etc ... Une synthèse de tous les éléments biologiques acquis précédemment et des données économiques de base est effectuée dans un modèle bio-économique. A partir d'une typologie des flottilles françaises péchant en Mer Celtique, on met en évidence les métiers (espèces + secteurs) pratiqués, ce qui permet de définir des compartiments spatio-temporels dans lesquels on connaît à un moment donné les éléments interactifs entre flottilles et stocks. Le principe du modèle consiste à distribuer, à chaque intervalle de temps les flottilles dans ces compartiments. L'allocation de l'effort est gérée par deux coefficients, adhérence et préférence, qui traduisent les capacités des flottilles à saisir les opportunités. Taking advantage of a broad forest plot network surveyed for tree mortality over a 23-year period, we measured the remaining fraction of boles from 367 dead trees from 26 neotropical species widely varying in wood density (0.23–1.24 g cm-3) and tree circumference at death time (31.5–272.0 cm). We modeled decay rates within a Bayesian framework assuming a first order differential equation to model the decomposition process and tested for the effects of forest management (selective logging vs. unexploited), of mode of death (standing vs. downed) and of topographical levels (bottomlands vs. hillsides vs. hilltops) on wood decay rates. The general decay model predicts the observed remaining fraction of dead wood (R2 = 60%) with only two biological predictors: tree circumference at death time and wood specific density. Neither selective logging nor local topography had a differential effect on wood decay rates. Including the mode of death into the model revealed thatstanding dead trees decomposed faster than downed dead trees, but the gain of model accuracy remains rather marginal. Overall, these results suggest that the release of carbon from tropical dead trees to the atmosphere can be simply estimated using tree circumference at death time and wood density. Spatially explicit fisheries simulation models for policy evaluation Auteur(s) : Pelletier, Dominique Mahevas, Stephanie Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : This paper deals with the design of modelling tools suitable for investigating the consequences of alternative policies on the dynamics of resources and fisheries, such as the evaluation of marine protected areas (MPA). We first review the numerous models that have been developed for this purpose, and compare them from several standpoints: population modelling, exploitation modelling and management measure modelling. We then present a generic fisheries simulation model, Integration of Spatial Information for FISHeries simulation (ISIS-Fish). This spatially explicit model allows quantitative policy screening for fisheries with mixed-species harvests. It may be used to investigate the effects of combined management scenarios including a variety of policies: total allowable catch (TAC), licenses, gear restrictions, MPA, etc. Fisher's response to management may be accounted for by means of decision rules conditioned on population and exploitation parameters. An application to a simple example illustrates the relevance of this kind of tool for policy screening, particularly in the case of mixed fisheries. Finally, the reviewed models and ISIS-Fish are discussed and confronted in the light of the underlying assumptions and model objectives. In the light of this discussion, we identify desirable features for fisheries simulation models aimed at policy evaluation, and particularly MPA evaluation. Traditional fisheries management has failed to avoid overexploitation of most coastal marine resources. Management measures based on an Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) are thus required. Spatial management covers various ranges of properties that may enhance usual regulatory means. If spatial considerations are explicitly integrated in fisheries management, the latter may contribute to zoning design in order to balance the economic, social and biological values of natural marine resources. While traditional fisheries management approaches protect resource based on population numbers, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) protect ecosystem in space. Besides their ecological effects on fish assemblages within its boundaries, MPAs can enhance adjacent artisanal fisheries. MPAs can thus ensure the sustainability of fisheries and at the same time maintain non-fisheries benefits of marine ecosystems to society. Diversité et différentiation génétiques des populations de tortues vertes (Chelonia mydas) dans les sites de ponte et d'alimentation du sud-ouest de l'océan Indien : application aux stratégies de conservation de l'espèce Auteur(s) : Taquet, Coralie Éditeur(s) : Université de la Réunion Résumé : The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is an emblematic species of marine life. However, nowadays it is subject to many threats (poaching, by-catch). Even if there is deep growing measures for its protection, the green turtle still is an endangered species and it is listed in Appendix I of Washington Convention (CITES). In order to elaborate efficient conservation and management plans, perfect knowledge of green turtle biology, but also of its population structure and their characteristics, are needed. In this thesis, we have assessed genetic structure of green turtle populations in the South-Western Indian Ocean by using genetic tools. In all, 1551 tissue samples have been collected from our study zone and from our control site French Polynesia (37 samples). All kinds if individuals were sampled (except males in reproductive phase) from 15 sampling sites including nesting, foraging, and immature development site. We used both control region of mitochondrial DNA and 6 microsatellite loci to better infer maternal and paternal lineages. We identified 29 haplotypes in the South-Western Indian Ocean. They are distributed in 3 independent and highly divergent clades, including one composed with haplotypes from Atlantic Ocean. For 7 of these haplotypes, it was the first time they were detected in the study zone. Fifteen haplotypes were previously undescribed, distributed in all the 3 clades. These new haplotypes seem to be specific to the South-Western Indian Ocean, which is then an original zone. Besides, we found a high allelic richness. These results show the South-western Indian Ocean is rich and very diversified. This region plays an important role in the global diversity of the species. The South-Western Indian Ocean is one of the two contact zones presently known between the two metapopulations of green turtles (Atlantic-Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific). This contact induces a genetic cline based on CM8 (Atlantic) and C3 (Indo-Pacific) haplotype frequencies. Analysis of the microsatellite differentiation between individuals provides evidence of genetic exchanges between the two metapopulations in the region. The South-Western Indian Ocean participates to green turtle global genetic mixing. Studying the influence of several intrinsic and extrinsic factors on population structuring provides useful information for management plan elaboration. We found no significant difference between genetic structures of foraging females and males, contrary to immature turtles which seem to be organised in 'regional pools'. This organisation could be due to both immature natal homing and influence of oceanic currents. High mitochondrial differentiation of nesting females and low global microsatellite differentiation of our samples indicate male-mediated gene flow among populations of the study zone. The genetic composition of a sampling site presents no significant variation along the year, even if we could notice some trends. Nevertheless, it can be significantly different from a year to an other one. This may result from alternation of distinct populations on the same site. We noticed different evolution in 10 or 20 years of the genetic composition depending on the sampling site. Geographic distance seems not to have significant influence on population structuring concerning microsatellite markers. Nesting females of Saziley Beach (Mayotte Island, Comoros Archipelago) present genetic divergence from females nesting in the two other sampled beaches of this island. The observed population structure shows no contradiction with the organisation of oceanic currents in the South-Western Indian Ocean. Comparing the results from the two genetic markers used, we identified 8 genetic differentiated clusters of turtles in the study zone and at least 6 distinct populations. These clusters constitute 8 potential management units (MUs) which could serve as basis in the elaboration of conservation and management plans. La tortue verte (Chelonia mydas) constitue l'un des espèces emblématiques de la vie marine, pourtant de nombreuses menaces pèsent de nos jours encore sur sa survie (braconnage, captures accidentelles). Ainsi, malgré l'essor de mesures de protection menées à travers pour sa sauvegarde, la tortue verte constitue une espèce 'en danger d'extinction' et figure dans l'Annexe I de la Convention de Washington (CITES). Afin d'élaborer des plans de gestion et de conservation qui soient efficaces, il est important d'avoir une parfaite connaissance de la biologie de la tortue verte, mais aussi de la structure de ses populations et de leurs caractéristiques. C'est dans ce cadre que s'inscrit la présente étude. L'objectif de cette étude était d'acquérir des connaissances sur la structure des populations de tortues vertes dans le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien grâce à l'utilisation de l'outil génétique. Au total, 1551 échantillons de tissu ont été collectés dans la zone d'étude et dans notre site témoin la Polynésie française (37 échantillons). Toutes les catégories d'individus ont été échantillonnées (excepté les mâles en phase de reproduction) et les 15 sites d'échantillonnage comprennent à la fois des sites de ponte, d'alimentation et de développement pour les immatures. Deux types de marqueurs ont été utilisés : la région contrôle de l'ADN mitochondrial et 6 loci microsatellites, afin d'appréhender au mieux l'apport des lignées maternelles et paternelles. Nous avons pu mettre en évidence la présence dans le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien de 29 haplotypes distincts, appartenant à trois clades fortement divergents dont l'un constitué d'haplotypes originaires de l'océan Atlantique. Parmi ces haplotypes, 7 ont été détectés pour la première fois dans la zone d'étude, et 15 autres n'ont jamais été précédemment décrits chez cette espèce. Ils sont présents dans chacun des 3 clades d'haplotypes. Ces nouveaux haplotypes semblent spécifiques à la région, et en font une zone originale. On observe par ailleurs une grande richesse allélique dans les effectifs analysés. Ces résultats montrent que le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien est une zone riche et très diversifiée. Cette région joue un rôle important dans la diversité génétique globale de l'espèce. Le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien constitue l'une des deux seules zones connues à l'heure actuelle de contact entre les deux métapopulations de tortues vertes (Atlantique-Méditerranée et Indo-Pacifique). Ce contact a entraîné la formation d'un cline génétique portant principalement sur les fréquences relatives des haplotypes CM8 (Atlantique) et C3 (Indo-Pacifique). Les résultats obtenus lors de l'analyse microsatellite de la différenciation entre les individus originaires des deux métapopulations montrent que le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien constitue une zone d'échanges génétiques entre les deux métapopulations, participant au brasage génétique de l'espèce. L'étude de facteurs, intrinsèques et extrinsèques, pouvant influencer la structuration des populations apportent de nombreuses informations qui pourraient s'avérer utiles lors de l'élaboration de plans de gestion. La structure des femelles et des mâles en alimentation ne diffère pas, contrairement à celle des immatures qui semble s'organiser en 'pools régionaux' qui seraient le fruit de l'interaction d'un comportement de philopatrie et d'une influence des courants océaniques. La forte différenciation mitochondriale des femelles en ponte et la très faible différenciation microsatellite observée à l'échelle de la région, indiquent l'existence de flux de gènes via les mâles. La composition génétique d'un site ne varie pas de manière significative au cours de l'année. Par contre, elle peut varier d'une année à l'autre, signifiant l'alternance dans certains sites de ponte de plusieurs populations distinctes. L'évolution de la composition génétique d'un groupe, au cours de 10 ou 20 ans, diffère selon le site considéré. La distance ne semble pas influencer de manière significative la structuration des populations au niveau microsatellite. Les femelles en ponte sur la plage de Saziley (Mayotte) diffèrent génétiquement de celles pondant sur les deux autres plages de l'île. La structure observée des populations est en accord avec l'organisation des courants océanique dans la région. La confrontation des résultats obtenus à partir des deux marqueurs génétiques utilisés, permet la détermination de 8 ensembles génétiquement différenciés dans la zone d'étude et l'identification d'au moins 6 populations distinctes. Ces ensembles constituent autant d'unités de gestion (MUs) potentielles qui pourront servir de base à l'élaboration de plans de gestion et de conservation. First the various effects Studied within each of these domains and the variables used to measure them were censused. Potential ecological indicators were assessed through their link with the question used (here termed "relevance") and their "effectiveness" which encompasses the issues of precision, accuracy and statistical power. Relevance and effectiveness were respectively measured by the frequency of use of each indicator and the proportion of significant results in the reviewed articles. For social and economic effects, the approach was not possible due to the low number of references: we thus discussed the issue of finding appropriate indicators for those fields. Results indicate: 1- the unbalance in literature between disciplines: 2- the need for protocols and methodologies which include controls in order to assess MPA effects: 3- an important proportion of ecological indicators with low effectiveness: 4- the large number of ecological effects still not studied or not demonstrated at present. Cet article vise à identifier des indicateurs de l'effet des aires marines protégées (AMP) en milieu corallien, sur la base d'une synthèse bibliographique dans les domaines écologiques, économiques et sociaux, et principalement en milieu corallien. Nous recensons d'abord les différents effets attendus des AMP pour chacun des domaines, et les variables retenues pour les étudier. Les indicateurs écologiques potentiels sont évalués au travers de leur lien avec l'effet étudié (ici appelé "pertinence") et de leur "efficacité" qui regroupe les notions de précision, justesse et puissance statistique. Pertinence et efficacité sont respectivement mesurées par la fréquence d'utilisation et la proportion de résultats significatifs trouvés dans les articles recensés. Pour les aspects économiques et sociaux, le faible nombre de références ne permet pas une approche comparable à celle utilisée pour les indicateurs écologiques, et nous discutons donc de la question de l'identification d'indicateurs, et suggérons quelques pistes de recherche. Les principales conclusions de ce travail sont: i) le décalage entre les nombres de publications entre disciplines; ii) la nécessité de protocoles et méthodologies incluant des situations de contrôle pour évaluer les effets des MPA; iii) la faible efficacité de nombreux indicateurs écologiques; et iv) le nombre élevé d'effets peu ou pas étudiés ou démontrés à l'heure actuelle. A general framework for indicator design and use with application to the assessment of coastal water quality and marine protected area management Auteur(s) : Beliaeff, Benoit Pelletier, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Sci Ltd Résumé : Environmental management decisions based upon indicators are the end point of a process involving stakeholders and scientists. These steps should be explicit and follow a chronology. This paper presents a general framework for the design and use of management-oriented indicators, integrating management questions and performance criteria. We first examined the desirable characteristics of indicators aimed at providing decision-support for marine environmental management. Ideally, one should select the indicator that guarantees a safe and unambiguous decision leading to the appropriate measures in terms of regulation, remediation or control. In the present study, indicators are assessed according to two criteria: relevance and effectiveness. Relevance encompasses sensitivity and the existence of quantitative reference values, thereby allowing the selection of potential indicators. Effectiveness is the ability of the indicator to reach its predefined targets based on optimal (or at least improved) data collection protocols. Valeur économique totale des récifs coralliens, mangroves et herbiers de la Martinique Auteur(s) : Failler, Pierre Pètre, Élise Maréchal, Jean-Philippe Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : La Martinique possède 55 km2 de récifs coralliens, 50 d’herbiers et 20 de mangroves. Ces trois écosystèmes produisent des biens et services dont la valeur est estimée à quelque 250 millions d’euros par an. Près de 60 % de cette valeur est issue des usages directs liés aux activités récréatives (plongée, excursion, récréation balnéaire) induites pour l’essentiel par le tourisme et celles liées à la pêche (professionnelle et de plaisancière). Les services écosystémiques (assimilés aux usages indirects) tels que la protection des côtes, l’absorption/séquestration de carbone, la production de biomasse de poissons et l’épuration de l’eau sont conséquents puisque leur valeur annuelle s’élève à 94 millions € soit 38 % de la valeur totale. La valeur de ce qui a trait au non-usage des récifs, herbiers et mangroves (lié à la volonté de transmettre un patrimoine écologique pour l’essentiel ou encore à la satisfaction de savoir que les récifs sont en bon état) se traduit par une création de valeur de l’ordre de 10 millions €/an. Les herbiers et les mangroves contribuent le plus (par km2) à la création de valeur (respectivement 2,16 millions €/km2, 1,87 million €/km2 contre 1,78 million €/km2 pour les récifs). Ils doivent donc bénéficier de mesures de protection et surtout de valorisation au même titre que les récifs coralliens qui font déjà l’objet d’une attention particulière. Martinique possesses 55 km2 of coral reefs, 50 of sea grass and 20 of mangroves. These three ecosystems produce services for a value estimated at 250 millions € per year. About 60% of this value originates from directs uses such as recreational activities (diving, excursions, beach activities, etc.) induce by tourism and fishery. Ecosystem services (indirect uses) such as coastal protection, carbon sequestration, biomass production and water purification are significant since their sum value reaches annually 94 millions € (38% of the total economic value). Stratégies innovantes de gestion du pâturage pour améliorer l'alimentation et lutter contre le parasitisme gastro-intestinal : pâturage mixte caprins/bovins et addition de vermicompost ; Innovative strategies for grazing management to improve nutrition and fight against gastrointestinal parasitism : pâturage mixed goats / cattle and addition of vermicompost Auteur(s) : D'Alexis, Séverine Auteurs secondaires : Antilles-Guyane Boval, Maryline Résumé : Les systèmes d'élevage des petits ruminants au pâturage sont les plus répandus en zone tropicale humide mais l'exposition aux strongles gastro-intestinaux entraîne des pertes importantes de production. L'objectif de ce travail est d'évaluer un système de gestion mixte du pâturage associant diverses espèces animales permettant à priori d'accroître les performances via la réduction du parasitisme et!ou une meilleure alimentation. L'étude de la littérature a conduit à une méta-analyse confirmant de meilleures performances individuelles ou à l'hectare pour les ovins en mixte. Préalablement un dispositif visant à vérifier la non-transmission des larves d'Haemonchus contortus des caprinsaux génisses Créoles a été validé. Un second dispositif avec des chevrettes conduites en mixte, infestées ou pas par Haemonchus comortus (Ml et MnI) ont été comparées à des chevrettes contrôles infestées ou non (CI et CnI). Ce dispositif a été conduit pendant 2 ans avec des mesures du couvert pâturé, des mesures individuelles des quantités ingérées, de la digestibilité, du parasitisme et de la croissance. De plus fortes croissances ont étéobservées en pâturage mixte que les chevrettes soient infestées ou pas (43.25 et 31.68 glj pour MDI et MI vs. 32.44 et 17.91 glj) avec une moindre biomasse. Les mesures d'ingestion et d'ingéré digéré ont été corrélées aux croissances des chevrettes contrairement aux variables parasitaires et met en évidence le rôle de l'alimentation et de la résilience dans le bénéfice du pâturage mixte. Une autre gestion intégrée du pâturage a été étudiée basée sur l'utilisation du vermicompost et s' ant sur les mêmes leviers d'action: l'alimentation et le itisme Systems of small ruminant grazing are most prevalent in the humid tropics but this environment exposes animals to gastro-intestinal with production losses. The objective ofthis thesis is to evaluate a system ofmixed management ofthe pasture combining various animal species, which allows a priori to increase animal performance by reducing the parasitism and/or better nutrition. The study of literature bas led to a meta-analysis confirming the better individual performances or calculated per ha for sheep reared mixed. The first experiment validated the non-transmission of Iarvae ofHaemonchus contortus from goats to heifers. In a second experiment, goats mixed with heifers, infested or not with Haemonchus contortus (Ml vs MnI) were compared with controls goats, reared alone, infested or not (CI and CNI). This deviee with a continuous driving was studied for two years with measurements on the sward, individual measures of intake, digestibility, parasitism and growth ofthe goats. The highest growth rates were measured with the mixed pasture as goats are infested or not (43.25 and 31.68 g / d for MN! and MI vs. 32.44 and 17,91 g / d) with lower biomass. The herbage intake and the digested herbage intake were well correlated to the growth rate, unIike parasitic variables, and highlight the role of diet in the benefit of mixed driving for goats. Therefore, the infested goats with Haemonchus, expressed greater resilience with improved growth performance compared with controls. The FIS aims at building an operational and multidisciplinary monitoring network for scientific purposes, allowing a comprehensive view of fishery systems including their biological, technical, environmental and economical components. The objectives of the FIS are (i) to provide the specifications and methodologies for the collection, storage and processing of fisheries data, with the constant concern to harmonise all these procedures on a national scale, (ii) to improve data management system and access to data for a wide-spread public, and (iii) to produce and distribute relevant datasets, indicators and synthesis, for understanding and evaluation, including bio-economic diagnostics of the fisheries, and assessment of the short and long-term impacts of fisheries management scenario and measures. The FIS covers all the French fisheries, including overseas territories and small-scale fisheries, for which data are often hardly available or missing, whereas two thirds of the French vessels are less than 12 meters long. The challenge was to establish a statistical and an integrated approach supporting bio-ecological and economic issues. To further an integrated analysis of the fishery systems, the wide range kinds of data - including acoustic surveys, biological in-situ observations, environmental observations, as well as fishing statistics (landings and efforts) or economic data - are managed in a single data management system, based on an integrated relational data base with geographical facilities. Implications of the cementation of beach sediments for the recreational use of the beach Auteur(s) : Vousdoukas, Michalis Velegrakis, Adonis F. Kontogianni, Areti Makrykosta, Efstratia-natalia Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Beach sediment cementation (beachrock formation) is a sedimentary process that can transform significant sections of beaches into rock outcrops. This contribution reports the results of two questionnaire surveys (one focusing on foreign tourists and the other on local people) carried out in coastal resorts of the island of Lesbos (Greece), on the perceptions of beach users regarding the impacts of beachrocks on their recreational activities. The survey focusing on foreign tourists showed that the majority of the interviewees took notice of the formations and commented negatively on them. Although most of the interviewees did not consider beachrocks a significant safety risk, a considerable proportion of the sample stated that beachrocks influenced their beach ratings that they would prefer beachrock-free beaches and would be willing to contribute financially to preventative and protective measures. In contrast, the results of the survey focusing on local people, who are more familiar with the phenomenon, showed a high perception of beachrock-related risks and limited beachrock tolerance. In addition to the safety risks that the irregular, slippery, beachrock surfaces may pose to beach users, beachrocks may also degrade beach aesthetics. promote beach sediment erosion and decrease the beach carrying capacity. As beachrocks are a common attribute of tropical, subtropical and low-temperate beaches that are typically associated with major tourist destinations, and are likely to spread under global warming conditions, they may be considered as a significant threat to the coastal tourist industry. However, with global change, monospecific plantations are increasingly vulnerable to abiotic and biotic disturbances. As an adaption measure we need to move to plantations that are more diverse in genotypes, species, and structure, with a design underpinned by science. TreeDivNet, a global network of tree diversity experiments, responds to this need by assessing the advantages and disadvantages of mixed species plantations. The network currently consists of 18 experiments, distributed over 36 sites and five ecoregions. With plantations 1-15 years old, TreeDivNet can already provide relevant data for forest policy and management. In this paper, we highlight some early results on the carbon sequestration and pest resistance potential of more diverse plantations. Finally, suggestions are made for new, innovative experiments in understudied regions to complement the existing network.
