Eutrophication in a tropical pond: Understanding the bacterioplankton and phytoplankton dynamics during a vibriosis outbreak using flow cytometric analyses Auteur(s) : Lucas, Ronan Courties, C. Herbland, Alain Goulletquer, Philippe Marteau, Anne-laure Lemonnier, Hugues Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : In tropical shrimp ponds, the increasing of feed input, concomitantly with the stocking shrimp biomass, induces an eutrophication of the ecosystem. Although difficult to maintain, its stability is required to guarantee the success of the culture. A 110-day period of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton stock and dynamics in an earthen pond (1.2 ha area, 1 m depth) was monitored using flow cytometry to provide baseline information on community characteristics and ecosystem instability. Seven autotrophic cell types were identified over the whole sampling period. Prokaryotic cells included Synechococcus sp., a group named UNK which presented an atypical new flow cytometric signature and picoeukaryotes (PEUK). Nanophytoplankton cells were represented by 4 groups: NAN1, NAN2, NAN3 and Cryptophytes. During the first part of the survey, picophytoplankton dominated the phytoplanktonic assemblage. The mean abundance of total cells (up to 8 x 10(6) cells mL(-1)) was among the highest recorded in marine and brackish waters. Bacterial abundance and production ranged from 0.8 to 5.1 x 10(7) cells mL(-1) and from 30 to 110 mu g C L-1 h(-1). A shift from pico to nanophytoplankton abundance was observed for a few days from d 96. During this period, heterotrophic bacteria production and abundance suddenly dropped, implying a change in the functioning of the microbial loop. This shift was concomitant with a significant shrimp mortality outbreak due to Vibrio penaeicida, the etiological agent of a disease known as Syndrome 93, which affects the shrimp industry in New Caledonia. This survey suggests that flow cytometric analysis could be used for the monitoring of aquaculture systems to improve our understanding of the complex phytoplankton and bacterial dynamics of these systems and its potential influence on disease development. Selection and characterization of potential probiotic bacteria for Litopenaeus stylirostris shrimp hatcheries in New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Pham, Dominique Ansquer, Dominique Chevalier, Anne Dauga, Clement Peyramale, Aude Wabete, Nelly Labreuche, Yannick Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : In New Caledonia, shrimp hatcheries are confronted with mass mortality in the larval stages, a phenomenon poorly understood as no specific causative agent has been identified. This has resulted in an excessive use of prophylactic antibiotics, although their adverse effects in aquaculture are notorious. The present work was thus aimed at selecting potential probiotic strains for penaeid hatcheries. From a pool of more than 400 marine bacterial isolates sampled from the local marine environment seven strains exhibited in vitro antagonistic activity towards Vibrio harveyi. These isolates were characterized both phenotypically and genotypically using a biochemical approach and 16S rDNA sequencing. Six out of these seven strains were found to belong to the genus Pseudoalteromonas, the last one belonging to the Vibrionaceae family and related to the Harveyi clade. Selected probiotic candidates were individually tested for antagonistic activities in vitro using a green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labelled transconjugant of V. harveyi and for inherent pathogenicity towards cultured shrimp larvae at two different developmental stages. This approach enabled rapid processing and selection of candidates to be tested in our experimental hatchery. Four different experiments were conducted to test candidate strains either alone or in combination. Repeated trials showed that postlarval survival was significantly improved by adding the strain NC201 individually to the rearing water compared to unchallenged controls. The analysis of immune-related gene expressions showed that the Litsty PEN3 transcript abundance of larvae was significantly increased after being reared in probiotic-containing water; however no significant difference in lysozyme gene expression was recorded in this study. Together, these results open new insights into the use of these strains as potential substitutes to antibiotherapy in shrimp larval rearing in New Caledonia. Abstract This paper deals with language practices in nurseries and pre-elementary schools of Martinique. It is focused on the account of modalities concerning everyday interactions and more precisely language distortions that may occur during interactions between adults and children in those structures. The consideration of cultural diversity generated by language distortions is suggested here to be a prerequisite for the development of a reciprocal understanding leading to adequate mastery of linguistic behavior and learning among young children. This approach proposes new patterns within a didactic agreement considering adult and child differences. Exposure of the human fetus during pregnancy to paracetamol or/and to other mild-analgesics is associated with an increased risk of cryptorchidism. Objective:We aimed at determining whether mild analgesics disrupted the morphology and endocrine function of the human testis.Design:We used an in vitro system based on the culture of human fetal testes exposed or not to paracetamol, its metabolite AM404, aspirin, indomethacin, ketoconazole at 10(-4) M to 10(-7) M.Setting:The study was conducted at the University of Rennes I.Patients/Participants:Human fetal testes were from pregnant women following induced abortion, between 7 and 12 weeks of gestation (GW).Main Outcome Measures:Testosterone (radioimmunoassay: RIA), Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH; ELISA), insulin-like factor 3 (INSL3; RIA), prostaglandin D2 and E2 (PGD2 and PGE2, respectively; ELISA), were assayed in the media. Testicular cells were counted using histology and image analysis. The possible nuclear receptor-mediated activities of the analgesics were investigated using reporter cell lines expressing estrogen (ERs), androgen (AR) and peroxysome proliferator-activated γ ( PPARγ) receptors. Results:Indomethacin and aspirin stimulated testosterone production, particularly by the younger testes (8-9 GW vs 10-12 GW). Paracetamol, AM404 and ketoconazole decreased INSL3 levels. Aspirin stimulated, whereas ketoconazole inhibited AMH production. PGE2 levels were inhibited by paracetamol, and aspirin in the 7-12 GW testes, and by indomethacin but only in 7-9.86 GW old testes. The inhibitory trends seen for PGD2 were not statistically significant. Conclusions:Analgesics at concentrations relevant to human exposure cause endocrine disturbances in the fetal testis. We suggest that the fetal human testis displays slight critical age windows for sensitivity to direct exposure to aspirin, indomethacin and paracetamol. The analgesic-induced inhibition of INSL3 may be the mechanism by which analgesics increase the risk of cryptorchidism. Greater caution is required concerning consumption of analgesics during pregnancy. Heritage and tourism are recognized factors of development. Their good exploitation can contribute to the improvement of the conditions of existence of local populations. East-Cameroon is the fief of natural and cultural resources which can stimulate tourism. Although even if this region receives every year domestic and foreign tourists, its population cannot profit from direct, indirect and induced effects which would engender a suitably led tourist activity. The present article exposes, in a historical perspective (1980-2010), reasons why, tourism and development of East-Cameroon tramples in spite of its numerous heritage resources. The data collection (written, oral, iconographic, electronic…) on the research filed and personal observation allow to notice that tourism was very fast relegated in East-Cameroon. The intensive mining and forest exploitation have hypothecated the future of this area instead of developing it. Moreover, the role of tourism agencies in eastern Cameroon is limited itself to inventory of places of interest, sporadic development and approximate promotional actions. The negligence of tourism by the Cameroon authorities is not novelty; it has for corollary appearance of difficulties (as poaching, lack of personal, insecurity). In September 2007, during a speech to the General Assembly of the United Nations, Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa criticized the vision underlying the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Rejecting the strategy of economic liberalization and the increased consumption it implies, Correa stated that his government was in favour of "endogenous development, economic inclusion and social and territorial cohesion" to reduce inequalities and permit a decent standard of life for everyone, adding "our vision of development is very different: we believe in developing the welfare of all, in peace and harmony with nature, and the infinite extension of human cultures."Tourism is one of the largest form of foreign exchange in Ecuador beside oil and remittances from migrants. Can tourism contribute to achieving the goal defined by Correa? How? With more than one million foreign visitors in 2008 (including 24% from the United States and 45% from Latin American countries), international tourism contributed $745 millions to Ecuador’s economy in 2008. Acknowledging tourism as a timely activity, more and more indigenous communities are developing tourism projects. The multinational federation of community-based tourism in Ecuador includes 90 communities, even though all those who set up community tourism projects have not adhered to the federation’s requirements. How can we understand this surge in popularity for tourism from indigenous communities and what are their expectations? Do these projects result in adequate solutions? We will provide some answers through the analysis of two experiments conducted on community-based tourism by Kechua communities in the Andes and the Amazon rainforest. Ecotourism provides an original conceptual framework that enables approaches to development that are better able to provide a more equitable distribution of income, as well as better organized and thought through initiatives which are more likely to promote a holistic sustainable local development. With somewhat less negative impact than normal tourism, considerably less that mass tourism, ecotourism can encompass nature tourism, cultural tourism, scientific exploration, and even outdoor sports... A definition of ecotourism should take into account the following six points: 1/ nature and culture, 2/ the welfare of the host community, tourists acting responsibly, 3/ participation by the local community, 5 / sustainability , 6/ promotion of cultural exchanges Droits : info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess urn:doi:10.4000/etudescaribeennes.414 http://journals.openedition.org/etudescaribeennes/414 | Partager |

Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD BioMed Central Résumé : International audience BACKGROUND: The orphan receptors COUP-TF (chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter transcription factor) I and II are members of the nuclear receptor superfamily that play distinct and critical roles in vertebrate organogenesis. The involvement of COUP-TFs in cancer development has recently been suggested by several studies but remains poorly understood. METHODS: MCF-7 breast cancer cells overexpressing COUP-TFI and human breast tumors were used to investigate the role of COUP-TFI in the regulation of CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling axis in relation to cell growth and migration. We used Immunofluorescence, western-blot, RT-PCR, Formaldehyde-assisted Isolation of Regulatory Elements (FAIRE) assays, as well as cell proliferation and migration assays. RESULTS: Previously, we showed that COUP-TFI expression is enhanced in breast cancer compared to normal tissue. Here, we report that the CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling pathway, a crucial pathway in cell growth and migration, is an endogenous target of COUP-TFI in breast cancer cells. The overexpression of COUP-TFI in MCF-7 cells inhibits the expression of the chemokine CXCL12 and markedly enhances the expression of its receptor, CXCR4. Our results demonstrate that the modification of CXCL12/CXCR4 expression by COUP-TFI is mediated by the activation of epithelial growth factor (EGF) and the EGF receptor. Furthermore, we provide evidence that these effects of COUP-TFI increase the growth and motility of MCF-7 cells in response to CXCL12. Cell migration toward a CXCL12 gradient was inhibited by AMD3100, a specific antagonist of CXCR4, or in the presence of excess CXCL12 in the cell culture medium. The expression profiles of CXCR4, CXCR7, CXCL12, and COUP-TFI mRNA in 82 breast tumors and control non-tumor samples were measured using real-time PCR. CXCR4 expression was found to be significantly increased in the tumors and correlated with the tumor grade, whereas the expression of CXCL12 was significantly decreased in the tumors compared with the healthy samples. Significantly higher COUP-TFI mRNA expression was also detected in grade 1 tumors. CONCLUSIONS: Together, our mechanistic in vitro assays and in vivo results suggest that a reduction in chemokine CXCL12 expression, with an enhancement of CXCR4 expression, provoked by COUP-TFI, could be associated with an increase in the invasive potential of breast cancer cells. The Importance of Reggae Music in the Worldwide Cultural Universe Auteur(s) : Dagnini, Jérémie Kroubo Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : When reggae emerged in the late 1960s, it came as a cultural bombshell not only to Jamaica but the whole world. Reggae has influenced societies throughout the world, contributing to the development of new counterculture movements, particularly in Europe, in the USA and Africa. Indeed, by the end of the 1960s, it participated in the birth of the skinhead movement in the UK. In the 1970s, it impacted on Western punk rock/ pop cultures and inspired the first rappers in the USA. Finally, since the late 1970s onwards, it has also influenced singers originating from Africa, Alpha Blondy, Tiken Jah Fakoly and Lucky Dube being perfect examples. Thus, my paper will examine the impact of Jamaican reggae music on the worldwide cultural universe, especially on Europe, the USA and Africa. The French Polynesian experience (Pearl oyster management, a manual) Auteur(s) : Berthe, Franck Prou, Jean Éditeur(s) : FAO, Rome Résumé : French Polynesia is currently the world's largest producer of cultured black pearls with exports worth U5$150 millions annually. The activity has become of prime socioeconomic importance the archipelagos with strong support and control of the government. In the mid-1980s, mass mortality of the black-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada margarltlfera, has occurred in several atolls and challenged the development of pearl farming activity. Consequent studies and surveys have described several pathological conditions. None of those is considered to pose significant threat to the industry. However, they are monitored by a surveillance program in order to prevent and control emerging diseases. The government of French Polynesia has developed efforts to maintain high quality of the pearls and sustain demand of the markets. This paper reviews a successful model of development based on proactive policy and cooperation among stakeholders. In : M. G. Bondad-Reantaso, S. E. McGladdery & F. C. Berthe. This issue puts into perspective the development-centric vision and the dialogic dimension of tourism. The successive authors examine the relationship between tourism, culture, and development, in the light of heritage. In the 1970s, the emergence and the growth of cultural tourism contributed significantly to raise awareness among ordinary people and politicians, as well as to formalize the need for a new approach to discourse about natural spaces and historical and intangible heritage. The overlapping perspectives of legal experts, anthropologists, and geographers, draw out a set of problems that echoes an observation shared by many: the knowledge on the applications and the instruments of international policy guidance, as well as the knowledge on their relationship with social and ethnic identity, is still inadequate.hen dealing with the issues at stake in the heritage field, it is thus necessary to question the relationship between concepts, discourse, and policies, and to outline the basis of possible solutions from the experience covered. The aim of this article is to analyse, from an external point of view, the pre-existent conditions at a local-regional level of a rural territory in Mexico, the Bajo Balsas, regarding the hypothetic integration of a community based tourism (CBT) activity. The analysis is about the external aspects of the host territory to be considered before the introduction of an activity of tourism, and about its intrinsic conditions. The results show that the territory does have specific aptitudes to implement a CBT activity such as the local and collective organizational capacity, the existence of a larger process of development and an interesting complementarity of natural and cultural resources. Nevertheless, the study also reveals numerous restrictions such as the negative image of the region and the lack of connexion and local infrastructure. Based on the results, some recommendations have been formulated at the attention of the actors implied in the development process and in the implementation of the CBT initiative. Tourism often appears as one a tool for a sustainable development, even if it is not easy to control, in the détriment of island and costal environment heritage, as in French overseas regions. Besides the cultural and social impacts of tourism upon environment, the heritage resources nuture the touristic request and offer. If based on an appropriate management of those resources, it may be a strong incentive for local sustainable development. The respect of protection, conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources by tourism, especially in the overseas regions of French West Indies, produces new approaches, strategies and behaviours. The ecotourism approach, calling for a joint and integrated management of resources and areas, is a challenge for tour operators as for environment actors, and brings local population an opportunity to reappropriate their life environment. Its concept and implications must then be clarified, before analysing its aims and stakes regarding sustainable development Caraïbes Droits : info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess urn:doi:10.4000/etudescaribeennes.3560 http://journals.openedition.org/etudescaribeennes/3560 | Partager |
It is high people admitted that mass tourism has its limits as there have been consequences. Indeed several NGOS as well as international organizations aiming at the protection of the environment see that this destructive or harmful tourism is losing ground it is being substituted or replaced by eco-friendly tourism. This latter target the preservation of mother earth as well as its natural resources by providing a new type of tourism labeled rural tourism whose first and paramount objective is providing tourists with organic products. This green or rural tourism tries at all cost to promote artistic commodities, authentic cultures and purely traditional folk.Rural tourism is actually expecting more prosperity and progress but on condition that the local authorities and the government cooperate more to give a push to this kind of business via a perfect or division of human resources. Rural tourism represent a new image of modern tourism that aims to protect the environment and diversity. From the beauty of the natural land scape, the quality of the food served, the professionalism of the staff members the touristic accommodation units based in Moroccan countryside manage to attract a significant number of tourists, who often come for 2 or 3 days prolong their stay for a week for having fond a deep pleasure. The water is pure, the atmospheric air is filtered, the cultural wealth is vast, it is therefore appropriate to sustain and support this kind of tourism that inspires our investigation at the rural town of Asni. Since now more than two decades of its existence, after the reform of the legal regime of national parks, the National Park of Guadeloupe faces a renewal and challenges of all kinds (social, economic, cultural, political and legal). A tool for protection has become an instrument for integration, vector of the sustainable development. Despite the criticisms, progresses in the conservation regime are present. However, their efficacy may be limited, owing to its facultative applicability to France of the Overseas. In the family of National Parks from overseas, the National Park of Guadeloupe is the elder brother. For PNG this represents an improvement, but in what direction? Evolution des recherches et études récentes en pathologie des huîtres Auteur(s) : Comps, Michel Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-villars Résumé : Until recently, the study of the pathology of oysters concerned some bacterial and a large number of parsitic diseases. Among the latter, diseases caused by fungi such as Labyrinthomyxa marina or by sporozoa such as Minchinia nelsoni in the American oyster have had very important econimic repercussions in the affected areas. The causes of some severe epizooties, such as the "Malpecue Bay disease" in Canada, have never been determined; in other cases, including the mass mortality of the Portuguese oyster in Fance, several years of investigations have been required before the first results of an etiologic nature were obtained. The use of electron microscopy has permitted great strides in the pathology of oysters. Thus, virus diseases have been found to be associated with the diseases of the Portuguse oyster, with gill disease and with the mass mortality of 1970. New and important data have also been obtained with regard to the structure and development of Marteilia refringens a parasite of the flat oyster which has been recognized as belonging to the haplosporidan species. Recently, Mycoplasma-like and Rickettsia-like organisms have been detected in several oyster species and oyster viruses have been isolated on cell cultures. Such results confirm the evolution of research in this field. Development Versus Coastal Protection: The Gold Coast Case Study (Australia) Auteur(s) : Dupre, Karine Bosman, Caryl Éditeur(s) : Université des Antilles Études caribéennes Résumé : The Gold Coast in Australia is one of these coastal places, which developed through taking advantage of its environmental assets, such as direct access to the sea, a white sandy shoreline, an extensive and naturally protected broadwater and several large accessible rivers. While many other coastal cities relied on port facilities to develop commercial and naval activities, the City of Gold Coast emerged and grew as a tourism destination. Largely because of this phenomenon, the pattern of settlement and subsequent development of the city differs from most traditional Australian settlement and development patterns. Today, the Gold Coast is one of the most famous tourist cities in Australia and it accommodates more than ten million visitors annually. In the wider Australian context, 85% of the population lives within 50 km of the beach, evidencing popular lifestyle cultural preferences of many Australians. Given this preoccupation with the coast, one may expect that Australia would be at the forefront of coastal tourism developments and coastal protection. There is, however, no overriding jurisdiction covering planning law enforcement in maritime areas and, this situation has led to many social and environmental conflicts. The City of Gold Coast is a case in point and no more so than currently (2017) with proposals to build a cruise terminal or/and a casino, and high rise residential towers on its protected coastal strip (the Spit). This paper demonstrates how the evolution and resolution of development conflicts on the Spit (Gold Coast) are symptomatic of the evolution of place values and the national coastal management and how, this informs a shift towards coastal protection. Through the study of the approaches to professional training in Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana, this article compares how training in these territories of French America compares to training in France and then highlights the changes that have occurred as a result of the introduction and development of the new information technologies into distance education programmes in those territories. Our purpose is to initiate a reflection on the need to examine the relationship between employment and training by integrating the role of politics and the social and cultural context Martinique Droits : info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess urn:doi:10.4000/etudescaribeennes.488 http://journals.openedition.org/etudescaribeennes/488 | Partager |
Genetic improvement strategy in small aquaculture industries : the new caledonian shrimp experience Auteur(s) : Goyard, Emmanuel Goarant, Cyrille Brun, Pierre Herlin, Jose Pham, Dominique Beliaeff, Benoit Harache, Yves Loubersac, Lionel Éditeur(s) : PSIC 11 - 11th Pacific Science Inter-Congress : Pacific Countries and their Ocean: Facing Local and Global Changes / 2nd Symposium on French Research in the Pacific. March 2 - 6, 2009 Tahiti, French Polynesia Résumé : Shrimp farming in New Caledonia relies on the culture of a domesticated strain of Litopenaeus stylirostris introduced from Mexico at a time when genetic principles were of little or no consideration. Since then, advances in agriculture and for some aquatic species of importance led caledonian shrimp farmers to reconsider the appropriateness of a genetic improvement strategy adapted to local biotechnical and economical constraints. This questioning involves many different and interrelated aspects: scientific and technologic (genetics, biosecurity, quarantine, ), economic and organizational (financing, diffusion of genetic improvement) and pedagogic (awareness of farmers). Local institutions, producers associations, research centre and sanitary services associated to carry on the test of a first improvement strategy based on the crossing of different strains of L. stylirostris. This conceptually simple approach aimed at eliminating inbreeding, the first genetic limitating factor of improvement in captive populations. A second domesticated strain was obtained from Hawaii by the caledonian farmers, imported through a quarantine under the control of the zoosanitary local authorities, and reproduced and tested as pure or crossbred stocks by Ifremer within the framework of an interdisciplinary research project financed by caledonian institutions. Present results for hybrids (better growth and survival in the absence of virus) demonstrate the validity of this approach. They also bring out the importance to simultaneously integrate in a development scheme, a breeding centre to maintain and reproduce disease free breeders. This strategy and organization, tested in New Caledonia, could possibly be of benefit to other small scale aquaculture activities in the pacific islands.
