The embryonic development in Chione cancellata, from fertilization to straighthinge D-stage veliger larva, occurs in 24 h at 251C. Transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy show that morphogenetic processes result in a gastrula with two depressions, 4 h after fertilization (T014 h). Two hours later, one depression, located at the animal pole, develops into an open cave, the floor of which becomes the shell field, characterized by scarce microvilli, located below the lower face of the prototrochal pad. The invagination located at the vegetal pole is characterized by regular microvilli and constitutes the digestive tract. At T018 h, the late gastrula differentiates into a typical motile trochophore, possessing a well-developed prototroch delimiting anterior and posterior embryonic regions. At T019h, the shell field, located between the prototroch and the telotroch, appears as a saddle-shaped region with a wrinkled surface extending on both sides of the embryo, establishing bilateral symmetry. From TEM observations, the apical surface of the underlying cells possesses a modified glycocalyx featuring a dense pellicle overlapping the cells of the shell field. At T0112 h, the prototroch is displaced toward the anterior region by outgrowth of the shell material. TEM views show that the wrinkled surface observed with SEM corresponds to the periostracum, attached dorsally to the hinge and ventrally to the cells of the future mantle edge. At T0115 h, an alveolar matrix of proteinaceous material, which could contain calcite crystals, appears between the periostracum and the mantle. At T0124 h, prodissoconch I formation is completed and the D-stage larvae possess a calcified shell. At this stage of development, only one mantle fold is present, representing the outer fold. The periostracumsecreting cells are in contact with the marginal cells of the velum. This functional velum is composed of four bands of cilia. Our TEMobservations confirm previous descriptions of the velum ciliary bands obtained only from SEM analyses, such as described in other bivalves. The apical sense organ and the digestive tract are poorly developed. From observations at the ultrastructural level of shell differentiation in C. cancellata, we propose a new interpretation of shell differentiation, including hinge and ligament for bivalves as opposed to that described for gastropods.

This study deals with temporal variations in eel diet Anguilla anguilla sampled at each of the four seasons in the Languedocian Prévost lagoon (Gulf of Lion) from Autumn 1998 to Summer 1999. The following feeding indices were calculated based on observations of 12 categories of prey found in the contents of full stomachs: coefficient of vacuity CV, degree of fullness DR, occurrence frequency PP, relative abundance N (in %) and relative weight P (in %). The interpretation of results is also based on the Costello's method (1990) which combines PP and N. Anguilla anguilla mainly feeds on benthic organisms, primarily Gammarus gr. locusta, Polychaeta, insect larvae, small fish. Based on variations in eel diet, seasonal influence is illustrated by a decrease in feeding activity in summer which gradually increases during the following seasons. The good trophic quality available to eels in the Prévost lagoon depends on its hydrodynamics which is directly related to the movement of water entering and leaving lagoon by a short communication with the sea. This water movement accelerates the enrichment and production processes of this ecosystem. Changes observed during the four seasons illustrate an opportunistic type of feeding behaviour. Eels consume the most available benthic prey. They favour the importance of the prey at a given moment without using a particular feeding strategy like specialisation or generalisation. Thus, eel adapts its diet in adjusting available energy resources in the ecosystem. Because of this, the lagoon-resident species Anguilla anguilla is an obvious indirect bioindicator of the trophic capacity and present level of confinement in the brackish water lagoon ecosystem of Prévost.

Benthic foraminifera are heterotrophic protists that utilize different trophic mechanisms and nutritional resources. They exhibit a wide range of trophic behaviours: selective (grazing) and indiscriminate herbivory, symbiosis, carnivory, parasitism, uptake of dissolved organic matter, passive suspension feeding and, most commonly, deposit feeding. The benthic foraminifera Ammonia tepida, previously known as an herbivore, fed as a carnivore in laboratory experiments where mobile metazoans were provided. We observed predation on the three types of metazoans provided: nematodes, copepods, and a larval gastropod. This foraminifera used its pseudopodial network to entrap the invertebrates, which were then stripped of their soft internal tissues within 24 hours. Our experiments are the first to demonstrate that Ammonia tepida, despite its limited motility, is able to utilize larger mobile animals as a food source. The great abundance of small metazoans in most marine environments suggests that they are a food source for foraminifera. Further study of foraminiferal feeding strategies will enhance our understanding of their role in marine communities.

The giant bathymodioline mussels from vents have been studied as models to understand the adaptation of organisms to deep-sea chemosynthetic environments. These mussels are closely related to minute mussels associated to organic remains decaying on the deep-sea floor. Whereas biological data accumulate for the giant mussels, the small mussels remain poorly studied. Despite this lack of data for species living on organic remains it has been hypothesized that during evolution, contrary to their relatives from vents or seeps, they did not acquire highly specialized biological features. We aim at testing this hypothesis by providing new biological data for species associated with organic falls. Within Bathymodiolinae a close phylogenetic relationship was revealed between the Bathymodiolus sensu stricto lineage (i.e. ``thermophilus'' lineage) which includes exclusively vent and seep species, and a diversified lineage of small mussels, attributed to the genus Idas, that includes mostly species from organic falls. We selected Idas iwaotakii (Habe, 1958) from this latter lineage to analyse population structure and to document biological features. Mitochondrial and nuclear markers reveal a north-south genetic structure at an oceanic scale in the Western Pacific but no structure was revealed at a regional scale or as correlated with the kind of substrate or depth. The morphology of larval shells suggests substantial dispersal abilities. Nutritional features were assessed by examining bacterial diversity coupled by a microscopic analysis of the digestive tract. Molecular data demonstrated the presence of sulphur-oxidizing bacteria resembling those identified in other Bathymodiolinae. In contrast with most Bathymodiolus s.s. species the digestive tract of I. iwaotakii is not reduced. Combining data from literature with the present data shows that most of the important biological features are shared between Bathymodiolus s.s. species and its sister-lineage. However Bathymodiolus s.s. species are ecologically more restricted and also display a lower species richness than Idas species.

The Western Indian Ocean harbors one of theworld’s most diverse marine biota yet is threatened byexploitation with few conservation measures in place.Primary candidates for conservation in the region are theScattered Islands (Iles Eparses), a group of relativelypristine and uninhabited islands in the MozambiqueChannel. However, while optimal conservation strategiesdepend on the degree of population connectivity amongspatially isolated habitats, very few studies have beenconducted in the area. Here, we use highly variablemicrosatellite markers from two damselfishes (Amphiprionakallopisos and Dascyllus trimaculatus) with differing lifehistory traits [pelagic larval duration (PLD), adult habitat]to compare genetic structure and connectivity among theseislands using classic population structure indices as well asBayesian clustering methods. All classical fixation indexesFST, RST, G0ST, and Jost’s D show stronger genetic differentiationamong islands for A. akallopisos compared to D.trimaculatus, consistent with the former species’ shorterPLD and stronger adult site attachment, which may restrictlarval dispersal potential. In agreement with these results,the Bayesian analysis revealed clear genetic differentiationamong the islands in A. akallopisos, separating the southerngroup (Bassas da India and Europa) from the center(Juan de Nova) and northern (Iles Glorieuses) islands, butnot for D. trimaculatus. Local oceanographic patterns suchas eddies that occur along the Mozambique Channel appearto parallel the results reported for A. akallopisos, but suchfeatures seem to have little effect on the genetic differentiationof D. trimaculatus. The contrasting patterns ofgenetic differentiation between species within the samefamily highlight the importance of accounting for diverselife history traits when assessing community-wide connectivity,an increasingly common consideration in conservationplanning.

Résumé : Le cycle biologique du principal stock de crevettes pénéïdes (Penaeus subtilis) exploité sur le plateau continental guyanais est court (18 mois environ). Les variabilités intra et inter annuelles de l'abondance des individus appartenant aux différentes composantes des premières phases du cycle (larves, post-larves, juvéniles) sont considérées comme très fortes, ce phénomène étant exacerbé par le double changement de milieu au cours du cycle, passage d'un habitat en eau salée à celui en eau douce, puis retour au premier. La pêcherie de la flottille crevettière guyanaise est ainsi basée sur un stock au renouvellement rapide et variable, aussi l'optimisation de sa gestion implique une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes de recrutement des crevettes et notamment leur facteurs de variation. Ainsi, depuis octobre 1992 une étude est conduite pour analyser ces mécanismes de recrutement. Elle s'intègre dans un programme de coopération régionale entre l'IFREMER et le Ministère de l'Agriculture, de l'Elevage et des Pêches du Surinam financé par des fonds FEDER et du FIC, et elle est menée par l'IFREMER dans la Zone Economique Exclusive française et par le laboratoire du Département des pêches du Surinam sur le plateau surinamien. Le programme prévoit une série de huit campagnes en mer qui seront conduites en parallèle par chacun des deux laboratoires Français et Surinarnien sur les plateaux de Guyane (campagnes RESUBGUY) et du Surinam (campagnes RESUBSUR) afin d'analyser le phénomène de recrutement sur la plus large échelle possible d'observation (plateau guyano-surinamien). Deux campagnes annuelles ont été programmées pour chaque pays, en mai et en octobre. La périodicité de ces campagnes est fonction des résultats des travaux conduits par l'IFREMER et l'ORSTOM sur la phase pré-recrutée de Penaeus subtilis qui ont mis en évidence deux principales périodes annuelles distinctes de recrutement (avril-mai; septembre-octobre). Cette campagne est la quatrième de la série initiée en octobre 1992. L'étude n'est pas limitée à l'examen des seules captures de crevettes Penaeus subtilis, puisqu'elle incluse également l'analyse de la composition des prises accessoires des crevettiers. Les "by-catches" considérées dans ce travail sont surtout représentées par la crevette "sea-bob", Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, ainsi que par les principales espèces de poissons d'intérêt commercial (ou ayant une forte probabilité de le devenir dans un futur proche). Enfin, une attention particulière a également été portée sur les captures accidentelles de tortues marines afin d’en estimer l’importance réelle.

Acoustic recording has been recognized as a valuable tool for non-intrusive monitoring of the marine environment, complementing traditional visual surveys. Acoustic surveys conducted on coral ecosystems have so far been restricted to barrier reefs and to shallow depths (10–30 m). Since they may provide refuge for coral reef organisms, the monitoring of outer reef slopes and describing of the soundscapes of deeper environment could provide insights into the characteristics of different biotopes of coral ecosystems. In this study, the acoustic features of four different habitats, with different topographies and substrates, located at different depths from 10 to 100 m, were recorded during daytime on the outer reef slope of the north Coast of Moorea Island (French Polynesia). Barrier reefs appeared to be the noisiest habitats whereas the average sound levels at other habitats decreased with their distance from the reef and with increasing depth. However, sound levels were higher than expected by propagation models, supporting that these habitats possess their own sound sources. While reef sounds are known to attract marine larvae, sounds from deeper habitats may then also have a non-negligible attractive potential, coming into play before the reef itself.

Résumé : For centuries, several species of prawns and crabs have been raised from wild-caught juveniles in coastal brackish-water fish ponds in various countries of south east Asia. The Indonesian "tambaks" are well known examples of such traditional practices. In western countries, since the turn of the century, advances of marine biology and fast increase of marine fisheries enabled the development of large-scale production and release of larval stages of American and European lobsters in a fruitless attempt to restock natural populations. After the Second World War, the increasing demand for crustaceans in United States and Japan was satisfied by opening new prawn fisheries all over the world. A major breakthrough was achieved with the development of hatchery technologies for the penaeid prawn Penaeus japonicus (Hudinaga, 1942 in Japan) and the caridean prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Ling, 1969 in Malaysia), which occurred during the first decades of the second half of this century. Together with the increasing market demand in developed countries for sea food, this led to a considerable interest of both public agencies and private investors in marine shrimp and prawn culture. In western countries, a large number of pioneering commercial ventures, often based on assumptions not scientifically founded, failed. Nevertheless, the aquaculture production of prawns mainly based on wild-caught juveniles increased in South-East Asia and Central America during the 1980s. This overall positive trend should not hide important failures which occurred at a local scale, such as the Taiwanese crisis of 1988 due principally to environmental degradation, resulting in severe disease problems and a near collapse of the farming activity. Following the early period of hatchery technology development, the major scientific achievements were related to food requirements and formulation of compound diets for larvae, juveniles and adults and to a better knowledge of diseases caused by bacteria and several viruses which have been identified from hatcheries and intensive farming ponds. Additional new technological advances have emerged from recent research in the fields of physiology (endocrinology) and genetics. By far, the major part of the world production of marine crustaceans relies on penaeid prawns and, to a lesser extent, on Macrobrachium species. However, some other species of marine crustaceans have potential for aquaculture. The economic aspects of marine crustacean aquaculture should be considered together with those of the fishing industry: market prices are rather similar, depending on the quality of the product. The balance between market demand and production is an important constraint which, in turn, establishes the success of prawn farming. Since the early 1980s, crustacean aquaculture has increased tremendously in both Asia and America: the world production for 1991 approximated 700,000 tons, with more than 600,000 tons from penaeid prawn culture.
Pendant des siècles, quelques espèces de crevettes et de crabes ont été élevées à partir d'individus juvéniles capturés dans le milieu naturel, dans des bassins à poissons d'eau saumâtre de différents pays d'Asie du Sud-Est. Les « tambaks » indonésiens sont des exemples bien connus de ces pratiques traditionnelles. Dans les pays occidentaux, depuis le début du siècle, les progrès réalisés en biologie marine et la croissance rapide des pêches maritimes ont permis le développement de la production à grande échelle de stades larvaires des homards européen et américain, dans une vaine tentative de reconstitution des stocks naturels. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la demande croissante des Etats-Unis et du Japon a été satisfaite par l'ouverture de nouvelles pêcheries de crevettes dans l'océan mondial. Un progrès décisif a été réalisé avec la mise au point des techniques d'écloserie pour la crevette Pénaeidé Penaeus juponicus (Hudinaga, 1942 au Japon) et la crevette Caridé Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Ling, 1969 en Malaisie), qui sont apparues au cours des premières décennies de la seconde moitié de ce siècle. Parallèlement à la demande croissante du marché des pays développés pour les produits de la mer, ce résultat s'est traduit par un intérêt considérable porté à l'élevage des crevettes marines de la part des institutions de recherche et des investisseurs. Dans les pays occidentaux, un grand nombre de tentatives d'élevage commerciales, fondées sur des considérations non scientifiquement établies, ont échoué. Néanmoins, la production aquacole de crevettes reposant sur la capture d'animaux juvéniles dans la nature, s'est développée en Asie du Sud-Est et en Amérique Centrale au cours des années 1980. Cette tendance globalement positive ne doit pas dissimuler les faillites importantes qui se sont produites à l'échelle locale, comme la crise des élevages de Taiwan en 1988, causée principalement par une dégradation de l'environnement, entraînant l'apparition de problèmes pathologiques sévères et une disparition presque totale de l'activité d'élevage. Après la période pionnière du développement de la technologie d'écloserie, les principaux acquis scientifiques concernent les besoins alimentaires et la formulation d'aliments composés pour les larves, les jeunes et les adultes, et une meilleure connaissance des maladies bactériennes et virales qui interviennent dans les écloseries et les fermes d'élevage intensif. De nouveaux progrès techniques complémentaires ont vu le jour à la suite de recherches dans les domaines de la physiologie (endocrinologie) et de la génétique. De loin, la majeure partie de la production mondiale de Crustacés marins repose sur les crevettes Pénaeidés et, dans une moindre mesure, sur des espèces de Macrobrachium. Cependant, quelques autres espèces de Crustacés marins intéressent potentiellement l'aquaculture. Les aspects économiques de l'aquaculture de crustacés marins doivent être considérés avec ceux de l'industrie des pêches maritimes : les prix du marché sont à peu près les mêmes, et dépendent de la qualité du produit. Le rapport entre la demande du marché et la production est une contrainte importante qui à son tour, détermine les conditions du succès de l'élevage de crevettes. Depuis le début des années 1980, l'aquaculture de crustacés a augmenté considérablement en Asie et en Amérique : la production mondiale pour 1991 avoisine 700 000 tonnes, avec plus de 600 000 tonnes provenant des élevages de crevettes Pénaeidés.

Cytochrome P450 aromatase (P450arom; aromatase) is a microsomal enzyme involved in the production of endogeneous sex steroids by converting testosterone into oestradiol. Aromatase is the product of the cyp19a1 gene and plays a crucial role in the sexual differentiation of the brain and in the regulation of reproductive functions. In the brain of mammals and birds, expression of cyp19a1 has been demonstrated in neuronal populations of the telencephalon and diencephalon. By contrast, a wealth of evidence established that, in teleost fishes, aromatase expression in the brain is restricted to radial glial cells. The present study investigated the precise neuroanatomical distribution of cyp19a1 mRNA during brain development in Xenopus laevis (late embryonic to juvenile stages). For this purpose, we used in situ hybridisation alone or combined with the detection of a proliferative (proliferating cell nuclear antigen), glial (brain lipid binding protein, Vimentin) or neuronal (acetylated tubulin; HuC/D; NeuroβTubulin) markers. We provide evidence that cyp19a1 expression in the brain is initiated from the very early larval stage and remains strongly detected until the juvenile and adult stages. At all stages analysed, we found the highest expression of cyp19a1 in the preoptic area and the hypothalamus compared to the rest of the brain. In these two brain regions, cyp19a1-positive cells were never detected in the ventricular layers. Indeed, no co-labelling could be observed with radial glial (brain lipid binding protein, Vimentin) or dividing progenitors (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) markers. By contrast, cyp19a1-positive cells perfectly matched with the distribution of post-mitotic neurones as shown by the use of specific markers (HuC/D, acetylated tubulin and NeuroβTubulin). These data suggest that, similar to that found in other tetrapods, aromatase in the brain of amphibians is found in post-mitotic neurones and not in radial glia as reported in teleosts.

Résumé : Le but de ce programme pathologie est de rechercher et d'étudier les agents pathogènes connus et inconnus chez les mollusques bivalves marins, plus particulièrement chez l'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, afin d'identifier d'éventuels agents causant des mortalités, de proposer des mesures prophylactiques et de définir des conditions zootechniques permettant aux professionnels de limiter l'impact des maladies sur leur cheptel. La présence de maladies, chez les mollusques bivalves marins dont l'impact socio économique peut être catastrophique pour les productions conchylicoles, et l'accroissement des échanges de produits d'aquaculture entre les pays de la CEE et avec les pays tiers nécessitent le renforcement des recherches dans les domaines de la pathologie. En particulier, du fait du mono élevage de l'huître japonaise, Crassostrea gigas, en France, il semble aujourd'hui indispensable d'effectuer des contrôles zoosanitaires réguliers chez cette espèce. Ces travaux ont d'autant plus d'importance qu'aujourd'hui, devant les pathologies rencontrées, les professionnels restent extrêmement démunis (traitements inapplicables ou inexistants). Dans ce cadre, la promptitude du diagnostic ainsi que l'acquisition de données épidémiologiques et biologiques concernant les agents pathogènes impliqués sont les meilleurs moyens d'éviter leur dissémination chez les mollusques bivalves marins. Les travaux entrepris dans ce cadre par l'URPIG, semblent d'autant plus indispensables qu'il n'existait pas jusqu'à ces dernières années de pathologies identifiées chez l'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, sur le littoral français. Cependant depuis 1991, sont apparus dans certaines écloseries françaises des épisodes de mortalité sur des larves de cette espèce. Il a été possible de détecter un virus apparenté à la famille des Herpesviridae par ses caractères morphologiques (NICOLAS et al., 1992) et de démontrer sa pathogénicité pour les larves (LE DEUFF et al., 1994). Par ailleurs, en 1993, 1994 et 1995, un virus de même type, a été observé en association à de fortes mortalités sur différents lots de naissain de la même espèce, originaires d'écloseries et de captage naturel. Par ailleurs, en 1993, suite à l'observation d'anomalies au niveau des branchies chez des huîtres creuses provenant de Charente Maritime et du bassin d'Arcachon associées à de médiocres performances de croissance, il a été entrepris des analyses de divers échantillons, en histologie classique et en microscopie électronique à transmission. Ces examens ont permis de révéler la présence au niveau des branchies, chez un nombre non négligeable d'animaux, d'un microorganisme de type chlamydien (RENAULT and COCHENNEC, 1995). Il a également été possible, chez cette même espèce, de détecter la présence d'un organisme de type rickettsien au niveau des branchies (RENAULT, COCHENNEC and CHOLLET, 1995).

Résumé : Les deux principaux objectifs de ce travail sont de proposer des outils pour la selection d'animaux résistants aux strongles gastro-intestinaux, parasites du tube digestif, et de faire progresser la compréhension des mécanismes de résistance chez la chèvre créole. La variabilité génétique du caractère de résistance au parasitisme digestif a été étudiée afin de vérifier quels critères décrivant le mieux la résistance, peuvent être utilisés pour la sélection. L'ensemble des résultats obtenus suggèrent que le critère d'excrétion d'oeufs et le critère d'éosinophilie sont les plus adaptés pour un schéma de sélection puisqu'ils possèdent une héritabillté moyenne et représentent le mieux la résistance. De plus, ils ne semblent pas en opposition avec le poids, principal critère de production. Le déterminisme génétique de la résistance aux strongles gastro-intestinaux a été étudié et a permis de mettre en évidence l'existence d'un gène majeur pour la résistance chez la population de chèvre créole. De plus, la primo-détection de qtl a permis d'identifier 13 régions du génome ayant un effet sur les critères de résistance. Les mécanismes responsables de la résistance aux strongles gastro-intestinaux ont également été à l'étude. L'ensemble des résultats met en évidence le rôle des éosinophiles dans la mise en place de la résistance aux strongles gastro-intestinaux. L'activité des immunogobulines e semblent dirigés vers les larves l3 d'haemonchus contortus et suggère la mise en place d'une réaction protectrice. Chez la chèvre créole. Ces deux mécanismes semblent donc jouer un rôle important dans la mise en place de la résistance aux strongles gastro-intestinaux
The two main objectives of this work are to propose tools for the selection of resistant animals to gastrointestinal nematodes and advance knowledge on mechanisms of resistance of creole goats. this work has analysed the genetic variability of resistance to digestive parasitism in order to determine which criteria best describes the resistance and can be use for selection. the overall results suggest that the egg excretion and the eosinophilia are the criteria most suitable for a breeding scheme because they have moderate heritability estimates and best represent the resistance. moreover, they do not seem in conflict with the weight, the main criterion of production. the genetic determinism of resistance to gastrointestinal parasites has been studied and has highlighted the existence of a major gene for resistance in creole goats. in addition, the primodetection of qtl identified 13 genomic regions that affect the resistance. the mechanisms behind the resistance to gastrointestinal parasites were also studied and first hypothesis regarding the involvment of the immune response in resistance have been made in goats. the overall results highlighted the role of eosinophils in the development of resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes. the activity of immunoglobulin e seems directed toward l3 larvae of haemonchus contortus and may be imply in the establishment of a protective response agasint nematode parasites. in creole goats, these two mechanisms seem to play an important role in the development of resistance to gastrointestinal nematode infections

Résumé : SODACAL prawn farm which was set up as a pilot farm for the development of a prawn industry in New Caledonia, saw its production exponentially rise from 1984 to 1992 (to 400 t/year, then experienced a sharp drop in 1993 (250 t/year) which carried on until 1997, and finally rose back to a stabilizing level around 400 t/year until 1999. The study analyses the difficulties observed before and during the drop of production. Among them, mortality outbreaks, other biological perturbations (benthic mat clearing and crab and fish mortality) and focus on the noxious state of the bottom (reduced and smelling sulfide hydrogen). It particularly shows that Syndrome 93 outbreaks could be observed on this farm from 1990. The analysis highlights the particular climatic conditions in New Caledonia from 1990 to 1995 (drought) and their potential impact on the production. The development of this very particular process of physical and topographic differential evolution of the pond bottom under wind action (accumulation and digging) and its consequences on pond preparation is explained. This work takes a close look at the grow-out management : age and quality of post larvae, pond stocking with pre-grown animals, feed characteristics and management, water exchange management and pumping capacity, strategy on density and size of harvested animals. The results have been assessed using a distinctive tool, the "survival differential", allowing inter-pond comparisons within a site, inter-farms comparisons over pluri-annual periods of time. >From the commented farm results over a 20 year period, we could distinguish the principal factors responsible for the drop of grow-out capacity of some ponds. We have outlined a conceptual description of the different parameters leading to the decrease of survival, an epidemiological scenario and a synoptic table of the history of events and their relative severity. The study draws the hypothesis of a cumulative effect of positive factors, which could have led back to satisfying production results: a physical and biochemical restoration of pond bottoms, a modified and standardized grow-out management, an appropriate pumping capacity and the come back of adequate climatic conditions. This case study illustrates the concept of « flexibility » of the farming capacity and the sustainability of prawn farming in New Caledonia. The clear objective of this 20 year historic investigation was to get relevant information, in order to improve the understanding on the "summer syndrome" which hits two farms at the moment, and to participate in the hypothesis under study by the DAC (2005). We also tried to make the new farmers aware of the fragility of the pond ecosystem, and give some common-sense advices in the hope that such problems will not happen again in other places.
La ferme de SODACAL, conçue à l'origine comme une ferme de démonstration pour le développement d'une filière d'aquaculture exportatrice de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie a connu une phase de croissance exponentielle de sa production de 1984 à 1992 (jusqu'à 400 t/an), puis une chute brutale en 1993 (250 t/an) qui s'est prolongée jusqu'en 1997 et enfin une reprise à partir de 1998 pour arriver à une stabilisation autour de 420 t/an depuis 1999. L'étude inventorie les dysfonctionnements observés avant et pendant la crise de production. Parmi ceux-ci sont évoqués les épisodes de mortalité de crevettes, d'autres désordres biologiques (décollements de tapis benthique et « hécatombes » de crabes et de poissons), l'état délétère des fonds (sédiments réduits et odeur d'hydrogène sulfuré). Elle permet notamment de montrer que des épisodes de mortalité typiques du Syndrome 93 pouvaient être observés sur cette ferme dès 1990. L'étude met en évidence les conditions climatiques remarquables qui ont sévi en Nouvelle-Calédonie de 1990 à 1995 (sécheresse) et leur impact probable sur les élevages. La genèse du phénomène très particulier d'évolution physique et topographique des fonds des bassins par l'effet du vent (accumulation et creusement) et des conséquences sur la préparation des bassins est explicitée. Ce travail aborde la gestion zootechnique : l'âge et la « qualité » des post larves, la pratique des ensemencements à partir d'animaux pré grossis, la gestion de l'alimentation et la nature de la provende, le contrôle du renouvellement d'eau et la capacité de pompage, le choix des densités et du calibre des animaux récoltés. Les résultats ont pu être évalués à travers un outil original «le différentiel de survie », permettant des comparaisons inter-bassins au sein du site, inter-fermes à des périodes pluri annuelles distinctes. A partir des résultats commentés de la ferme obtenus sur 20 années, on a pu distinguer les principaux facteurs qui ont provoqué cette chute d'aptitude culturale de certains bassins. Un schéma conceptuel des différents paramètres ayant conduit à la baisse des survies, un scénario épidémiologique ainsi qu'un tableau synoptique de la chronologie des évènements et de leur relative sévérité sont esquissés. Le rapport ébauche l'hypothèse d'un cumul de causes favorables qui ont permis le retour à des résultats zootechniques satisfaisants : une réhabilitation physique et biochimique des fonds de bassins, une zootechnie modifiée et standardisée, une capacité de pompage adéquate et une climatologie de nouveau favorable. Cette étude de cas permet ainsi d'illustrer les notions d « élasticité » de l'aptitude culturale et de durabilité de la crevetticulture en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Le but de cette enquête historique sur 20 ans est l'acquisition d'informations pertinentes permettant d'améliorer la compréhension du « Syndrome d'été » qui affecte actuellement deux fermes de production et ainsi aider à compléter le scénario hypothétique avancé par le Dac (2005). Enfin, au travers de cet historique, on a cherché également à sensibiliser les nouveaux opérateurs de la filière sur la fragilité de l'écosystème-bassin et présenter quelques conseils de bon sens pour éviter que de tels phénomènes ne se reproduisent ailleurs.

The epigenetic mark 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) is a cytosine modification that is abundant in the central nervous system of mammals and which results from 5-methylcytosine oxidation by TET enzymes. Such a mark is suggested to play key roles in the regulation of chromatin structure and gene expression. However, its precise functions still remain poorly understood and information about its distribution in non-mammalian species is still lacking. Here, the distribution of 5hmC was investigated in the brain of adult zebrafish, African claw frog, and mouse in a comparative manner. We show that zebrafish neurons are endowed with high levels of 5hmC, whereas quiescent or proliferative neural progenitors show low to undetectable levels of the modified cytosine. In the brain of larval and juvenile Xenopus, 5hmC is also detected in neurons, while ventricular proliferative cells do not display this epigenetic mark. Similarly, 5hmC is enriched in neurons compared to neural progenitors of the ventricular zone in the mouse developing cortex. Interestingly, 5hmC colocalized with the methylated DNA binding protein MeCP2 and with the active chromatin histone modification H3K4me2 in mouse neurons. Taken together, our results show an evolutionarily conserved cerebral distribution of 5hmC between fish and tetrapods and reinforce the idea that 5hmC fulfills major functions in the control of chromatin activity in vertebrate neurons. Résumé : Vibrio tapetis is the marine bacterium responsible for the brown ring disease (BRD) affecting die manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum. Identification of V tapelis has been previously performed using biochemical criteria and serological procedures. All of these methods are time consuming and ill-adapted to individual screening. This study describes an oligonucleotidic probe (Vt446) and two PCR primers, deduced from the 16S rDNA sequence, allowing a fast and specific V tapetis identification using dot blot hybridisation and species-specific primed PCR (SSP-PCR). The probe and primers have been tested on 60 strains, including referenced Vibrio sp., Gram negative and positive bacteria, marine bacteria samples and isolated clam bacteria. For all the 19 V tapetis strains, the results of PCR assays consistently corroborated those of the agglutination tests. The detection limit was estimated to be 10(2) CFU ml(-1). The SSP-PCR method has resulted in V tapetis detection in larvae, m diseased clams, and in asymptomatic broodstock clams that later developed BRD. In conclusion, the two SSP-PCR primers were useful for direct and fast identification of V tapetis strains isolated in clams, and are well suited for the screening of individual R. philippilnarum broodstock clams and larvae from the hatchery. Résumé : Aquaculture of penaeid shrimps holds a major place in productions of animals. New Caledonia takes part to these productions by developing the breeding of Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Nowadays, penaeid larviculture can’t be undertaken unless antibiotics are used. Experiments in the Caledonian Aquacultural Laboratory (LAC IFREMER Saint-Vincent) put across to the development of two antibiotic prophylaxis plans for substitution of erythromycine, one plan with oxytetracycline (hydrochloride), the other plan with trimethoprime-sulfadiazine association. After an antimicrobial agent susceptibility testing of bacteria and an acute toxicity study, efficacity assays are the biological validation of these projects of protocols
L'aquaculture de la crevette Pénéide occupe une position majeure au sein des productions animales. La Nouvelle-Calédonie y participe activement grâce au développement de l'élevage de la crevette bleue du Pacifique Litopenaeus stylirostris. En l’état actuel de nos connaissances, l’élevage larvaire de crevettes ne peut être mené sans l’utilisation d’antibiotique Les expériences menées au Laboratoire Aquacole Calédonien (LAC IFREMER Saint-Vincent) ont conduit à la mise au point de deux plans d’antibioprévention de substitution à l’érythromycine, l’un employant l’oxytétracycline (chlorhydrate), l’autre utilisant l’association triméthoprime - sulfadiazine. Après une étude de la sensibilité des flores bactériennes hétérotrophe totale et Vibrionacée aux antibiotiques et une étude d’innocuité sur les larves de crevettes, les essais d’efficacité constituent la validation biologique des projets de protocoles.

Natal philopatry, the return of individuals to their natal area for reproduction, has advantages and disadvantages for animal populations. Natal philopatry may generate local genetic adaptation, but it may also increase the probability of inbreeding that can compromise persistence. Although natal philopatry is well documented in anadromous fishes, marine fish may also return to their birth site to spawn. How philopatry shapes wild fish populations is, however, unclear because it requires constructing multigenerational pedigrees that are currently lacking for marine fishes. Here we present the first multigenerational pedigree for a marine fish population by repeatedly genotyping all individuals in a population of the orange clownfish (Amphiprion percula) at Kimbe Island (Papua New Guinea) during a 10-y period. Based on 2927 individuals, our pedigree analysis revealed that longitudinal philopatry was recurrent over five generations. Progeny tended to settle close to their parents, with related individuals often sharing the same colony. However, successful inbreeding was rare, and genetic diversity remained high, suggesting occasional inbreeding does not impair local population persistence. Local reproductive success was dependent on the habitat larvae settled into, rather than the habitat they came from. Our study suggests that longitudinal philopatry can influence both population replenishment and local adaptation of marine fishes. Resolving multigenerational pedigrees during a relatively short period, as we present here, provides a framework for assessing the ability of marine populations to persist and adapt to accelerating climate change.

In French Guiana, located on the northeastern coast of South America, bats of different species are very numerous. The infection of bats and their ticks with zoonotic bacteria, especially Rickettsia species, is so far unknown. In order to improve knowledge of these zoonotic pathogens in this French overseas department, the presence and diversity of tick-borne bacteria was investigated with molecular tools in bat ticks. In the beginning of 2013, 32 bats were caught in Saint-Jean-du-Maroni, an area close to the coast of French Guiana, and the ticks of these animals were collected. A total of 354 larvae of Argasidae soft ticks (Ornithodoros hasei) from 12 bats (Noctilio albiventris) were collected and 107 of them were analysed. DNA was extracted from the samples and quantitative real-time PCR was carried out to detect Rickettsia spp., Bartonella spp., Borrelia spp. and Coxiella burnetii. All tested samples were negative for Bartonella spp., Borrelia spp. and Coxiella burnetii. Rickettsia DNA was detected in 31 (28.9%) ticks. An almost entire (1118 base pairs long) sequence of the gltA gene was obtained after the amplification of some positive samples on conventional PCR and sequencing. A Bayesian tree was constructed using concatenated rrs, gltA, ompA, ompB, and gene D sequences. The study of characteristic sequences shows that this Rickettsia species is very close (98.3-99.8%) genetically to R. peacockii. Nevertheless, the comparative analysis of sequences obtained from gltA, ompA, ompB, rrs and gene D fragments demonstrated that this Rickettsia is different from the other members of the spotted fever group. The sequences of this new species were deposited in GenBank as Candidatus Rickettsia wissemanii. This is the first report showing the presence of nucleic acid of Rickettsia in Ornithodoros hasei ticks from South American bats. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Résumé : Shell is the basis of the distinction between the different species of molluscs. But the elements defining the shape and colour of the shell can vary according to the environmental conditions. So much so that, in numerous cases, a whole range of intermediates can be found between two species. Among molluscs, oysters are considered as a particularly confused group. Their shells are indeed extremely variable. All sorts of intermediates can be found. They usually attach themselves using their bottom valve, and, depending on the shape of the substrate, salinity conditions, temperature, outside environment, they present a wide range of individual variations. I had the opportunity to examine the larval shells of some of our coastal species. I noticed that each species had a specific prodissoconch, with a constant shape and no fundamental individual variations, an understandable fact given their planktonic life. The hinge and the position of the ligament in the hinge enable the definition of their genus. During the study of the collections of oysters from some of the world's most renowned museum (1), I tried to isolate the prodissoconches of the different species. I found them attached to the adult shells, making sure that all the prodissoconches attached to the top of the adult shells showed the same morphological characteristics. (unverified OCR)

Effectivement lorsqu'on consulte, comme je l'ai fait, les «Collections Lamarck» des Musées de Paris et de Genève. on s'aperçoit que, pour LAMARCK, le moindre caractère morphologique qui différencie une coquille de Mollusque d'une autre est une entité. Il multipliait le nombre des espèces et créait des variétés. Pour CUVIER (2) : «Le travail des nomenclatures, besogne facile, qui ne demande aucune intelligence a fait négliger la science véritable.» Et dit-il, ailleurs (:1) : «Après tout je n'ai pas jeté cette esquisse de division pour servir aux commençans à trouver les noms des espèces; qu'ils emploient pour cela tel système artificiel qu'ils trouveront le plus facile; cela est juste... » Les systèmes en question ne seraient donc que jeux de l'esprit, pour CUVIER également. Notre pensée a beaucoup évolué depuis cette époque. Nous pouvons dire maintenant que la Vie est la manière d'être des protéines et qu'il existe autant de protéines que d'espèces. Dès 1912, Jacques LOEB disait (4) : «Qu'en toute certitude, chaque animal a des substances germinatives spécifiques et que les substances germinatives diffèrent chimiquement d'un animal à l'autre, Les qualités chimiques d'un oeuf de poulet font qu'il ne peut donner naissance qu'à un poulet.» La notion d'espèce chimique vivante nous entraîne, par ailleurs, vers une nouvelle conception des autres groupes de la classification. L'individu porteur de caractères particuliers par lesquels il peut seulement être défini, est aussi porteur d'un noyau protoplasmique spécifique et enfin d'autres, propres successivement à la famille, à l'ordre, à la classe et à l'embranchement dont il fait partie. Cela est très important, car toutes ces catégories de la classification zoologique ne nous apparaissent plus alors comme de simples entités, subjectives, formelles, mais comme ayant effectivement une réalité précise dans le monde extérieur. La recherche et la définition correcte des espèces apparaissent alors comme un travail de première importance. Lorsqu'on poursuit des recherches embryologiques, physiologiques, biologiques ou autres sur un organisme, il est indispensable de savoir d'une manière précise en présence de quelle espèce on se trouve. Par ailleurs, comment parler de l'évolution des espèces si leur existence objective n'est pas admise et si elles ne sont pas correctement définies? Toute l'histoire de la Zoologie est marquée par l'effort constant de préciser les caractères de l'espèce et d'en faire une réalité objective. Chez les Mollusques, la coquille a servi de base essentielle pour la distinction des espèces. Mais les éléments de la forme et de la couleur de la coquille varient avec les conditions du milieu de telle sorte qu'on trouve dans de nombreux cas, tous les intermédiaires entre deux espèces. Parmi les Mollusques, les Huîtres constituaient un groupe particulièrement confus. En effet, leurs coquilles sont extrêmement variables. On rencontre tous les intermédiaires. Elles se fixent le plus souvent sur un support par la valve inférieure et là selon la forme du support, selon les conditions de la salinité, de la température, du milieu extérieur, elles présentent une immense gamme de variations individuelles. J'ai été amené à examiner les coquilles larvaires de quelques espèces de nos côtes. J'ai constaté que chaque espèce avait une prodissoconque particulière, d'une forme constante et sans variations individuelles fondamentales ce qui se conçoit aisément, étant donné leur vie planctonique. Leur charnière et la position du ligament par rapport à cette dernière, permettent de définir les genres, En étudiant les collections d'Huîtres des grands musées du monde (1), j'ai cherché à isoler les prodissoconques des diverses espèces. Je les ai trouvées sur les coquilles adultes où elles s'étaient fixées. m'assurant chaque fois que les prodissoconques conservées au sommet des coquilles adultes présentaient les mêmes caractéristiques morphologiques. J'ai microphotographié la plupart des coquilles larvaires étudiées. Ce sont les épreuves qui sont reproduites ici. J'en ai fait faire des dessins au trait et pour quelques-unes dont les microphotographies manquent, on trouvera les dessins au trait réalisé à la chambre claire. Chaque espèce est bien définie par sa coquille larvaire. La meilleure démonstration en est fournie par les deux espèces. si voisines par leurs coquilles adultes, Ostrea edulis et Ostrea chilensis; leurs prodissoconques sont spectaculairement différentes. Until recently, our ability to implement and assess spatial marine management approaches has been limited by a lack of information regarding processes that bind marine ecosystems, including habitat locations, larval and adult movement, trophic interactions, and fisher behavior. However, recent advances in habitat-mapping technologies, genetics, marine microchemistry, animal tracking and numerical modeling have greatly enhanced our knowledge of these processes. Although these advances have yet to be fully integrated into management decisions, they have the potential to revolutionize spatial marine management. Nevertheless, this revolution will require advances in our ability to share and integrate data into models of marine ecosystems.

Résumé : Climate may act on the dispersal and connectivity of marine populations through changes in the oceanic circulation and temperature, and by modifying species' prey and predator distributions. As dispersal and connectivity remain difficult to assess in situ, a first step in studying the effects of climate change can be achieved using biophysical models. To date, only a few biophysical models have been used for this purpose. Here we review these studies and also include results from other recent modelling efforts. We show that increased sea temperature, a major change expected under climate warming, may impact dispersal and connectivity patterns via changes in reproductive phenology (e.g., shift in the spawning season), transport (e.g., reduced pelagic larval duration under faster development rates), mortality (e.g., changes in the exposure to lethal temperatures), and behaviour (e.g.. increased larval swimming speed). Projected changes in circulation are also shown to have large effects on the simulated dispersal and connectivity patterns. Although these biophysical modelling studies are useful preliminary approaches to project the potential effects of climate change, we highlight their current limitations and discuss the way forward, in particular the need for adequate coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical simulations using atmospheric forcing from realistic climate change scenarios.
