Ecosystem dynamics and nichthemeral and seasonal programming of fish community structure in a tropical estuarine inlet, Mexico Auteur(s) : Yanez-arancibia, A Lara-dominguez, Al Sanchez-gil, P Vargas Maldonado, I Chavance, P Amezcua Linares, F Aguirre Leon, A Diaz Ruiz, S Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : A fish community was studied in Terminos Lagoon, Mexico over a one year period. Diurnal (24-h) and seasonal variations of several diversity indices - density, biomass, frequency and numerical abundance - were statistically related to changes in salinity, temperature, tide, and light periods. There were seasonal variations in all parameters of the community. The ecological parameters of the fish community remained high, reflecting a daily and seasonal succession of dominant fish species. The similarity in nichthemeral and seasonal changes exhibited by certain assemblages of species indicates that some dominant groups are influenced more by light period than by tidal stage. Community inhabitants and consumers of different trophic categories were seasonally quantified. Cyclical visitors (49%) and second-order consumers (49%) were dominant throughout the entire year. Twenty species were quantitatively important in terms of frequency, biomass and numerical abundance. Factors structuring the Ichthyofauna assemblage in a mangrove lagoon (Guadeloupe, French West Indies) Auteur(s) : Bouchereau, Jean-Luc De Tarso Chaves, Paulo Monti, Dominique Auteurs secondaires : Systématique, adaptation, évolution (SAE) ; Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (UPMC) - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Departamento de Zoologia ; Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) Dynamique des écosystèmes Caraïbe et biologie des espèces associées (DYNECAR EA 926) ; Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (UAG) Éditeur(s) : HAL CCSD Coastal Education and Research Foundation Résumé : International audience The ichthyofauna of the Manche-à-Eau mangrove lagoon was regularly sampled in 2002 with a fixed net at seven stations during 4 months corresponding to two hydrological seasons. Physicochemical variables (depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH) and population descriptors (species and family richness, density and biomass) were measured. The Whitefield and the well-being indexes were calculated to appreciate species equilibrium. Canonical correspondence analysis and generalized linear models were used to link species assemblages to physicochemical variables and to search for a special link with salinity. A total of 30,733 individuals belonging to 34 species and 23 families were collected. The Gerreidae, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Scianidae, and Sparidae represented almost 98% of the total number of individuals. Our results show that organization of the fish assemblages in the lagoon is poorly dependent on salinity, whereas dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH could have a stronger role. Looking at response curves to salinity change, most fishes species appeared to be visitors, either temporarily present or regular migrators. Only a few species compose the year-round resident population. They have a high patrimonial value and could be considered bioindicator species for long-term studies (e.g., of global change and natural or anthropogenic disturbances). The Euclidean distance and biomass variables were not useful descriptors of confinement and biological zonation in the lagoon, whereas the negative gradient of specific richness, number of individuals, Whitefield index, and index of well-being better described confinement. On the basis of these last parameters, biological zonation in the Manche-à- Eau lagoon was established and is provided. HAA are potential human carcinogens, which require metabolic activation to exert their genotoxicity. Human tissues can bioactivate HAA to produce reactive intermediates that bind to DNA. HAA DNA adduct formation occurs in human hepatocytes; however, the potential of HAA to form DNA adducts has not been investigated in human T lymphocytes. In this study, we investigated the ability of human T lymphocytes activated with PMA/Ionomycin or CD3/CD28 to express functional CYP1 activity and bioactivate three major HAA: 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), 2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (MeIQx), and 2-amino-9H-pyrido[2,3-b]indole (AαC) to form DNA adducts. Adducts were measured by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization/multistage scan mass spectrometry. The highest level of DNA adducts occurred for AαC (16 adducts per 109 nucleotides), followed by PhIP (9 adducts per 109 nucleotides). In contrast, DNA adducts formed from MeIQx and the structurally related aromatic amine 4-aminobiphenyl, a known human carcinogen, were below the limit of detection (< 3 adducts per 109 nucleotides). Moreover, we demonstrate that AαC is a potent inducer of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 activity through a transcriptional mechanism involving the AhR pathway. Overall, our results highlight the capacity of activated human T lymphocytes to more efficiently bioactivate AαC to form DNA adducts than other prominent HAA or 4-ABP. Environ. Mol. A worldwide review of purse seine fisheries on FADs Auteur(s) : Fonteneau, Alain Pallares, P Pianet, Renaud Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : This paper develops a comparative overview of the development of Fish Aggregating Devices (or fads) by the tropical purse seine fisheries in various ocean areas (Atlantic, Indian, Western and Eastern Pacific Oceans). First, a comparative review of fishery statistics is developed. Recent catches on fads by purse seiners can be estimated at a level of one million tons yearly. This comparison allows to describe the fishing zones and catch trends over time, the species composition and size taken in the various fad fisheries. Skipjack tuna is the dominant species in most fad fisheries, but significant amounts of yellowfin and bigeye are also frequently taken under fads. The paper also presents an overview of various observer data concerning the by-catches of the various fisheries using fads. This comparison allows to estimate the total worldwide yearly by-catches at about 100,000 t, and their species composition in each ocean. The fad technology used in the various oceans by purse seiners is described. The recent use of fads by purse seiners has introduced major uncertainties in most stock assessments, because analyses are hampered by changes in the fishing effort in a fad fishery, by changes in fishing zones and in sizes caught. As a last point, the management of fads presently done or in view by the various tuna bodies are introduced. It appears that the present massive use of fads worldwide is perhaps an unsafe fishing mode, which could produce serious overfishing of many stocks. There is then a consensus that the use of fads needs to be controlled and limited to sustainable biological levels. Small effective number of parents (N-b) inferred for a naturally spawned cohort of juvenile European flat oysters Ostrea edulis Auteur(s) : Hedgecock, Denis Launey, Sophie Pudovkin, A. I. Naciri, Yamama Lapegue, Sylvie Bonhomme, Francois Éditeur(s) : Springer Résumé : The great fecundity and very high larval mortality of most marine invertebrates and fish make possible substantial variance in the number of offspring contributed by adults to subsequent generations. The reproductive success of such organisms may thus resemble a sweepstakes lottery, in which a minority of progenitors succeeds in replacing an entire population, while the majority fails to procreate. One specific prediction of this hypothesis, that genetic diversity of newly settled cohorts should be less than that of the adult population, is tested in the present study. Microsatellite DNA markers were examined in naturally spawned juvenile European flat oysters Ostrea edulis (L.), collected over a 12-day period in 1993 from the western Mediterranean Sea, near Sete, France (43 degrees 32'N, 3 degrees 56'E) and grown out for a period of up to 10 months. Variation in these juveniles was compared to that in a pooled sample of adults collected in 1994 from two locations (Thau Lagoon and Port St. Louis) that had statistically homogeneous allelic frequencies. Though nearly twice as large as the pooled adult sample, the juvenile sample had only 60% of the adult allelic diversity. Analyses of linkage disequilibrium and kinship, as well as estimation of the effective number of parents, suggested that 10-20 adults produced this juvenile cohort. This observation supports the hypothesis of sweepstakes reproductive success and suggests that partial inbreeding may occur even in species with large populations and dispersing planktonic larvae. Intriguing diversity among diazotrophic picoplankton along a Mediterranean transect: a dominance of rhizobia Auteur(s) : Le Moal, Marc Collin, H. Biegala, Isabelle C. Éditeur(s) : Copernicus Gesellschaft Mbh Résumé : The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most oligotrophic marine areas on earth where nitrogen fixation has formally believed to play an important role in carbon and nitrogen fluxes. Although this view is under debate, the diazotrophs responsible for this activity have still not been investigated in the open sea. In this study, we characterised the surface distribution and species richness of unicellular and filamentous diazotrophs across the Mediterranean Sea by combining microscopic counts with size fractionated in situ hybridization (TSA-FISH), and 16S rDNA and nifH genes phylogenies. These genetic analyses were possible owing to the development of a new PCR protocol adapted to scarce microorganisms that can detect as few as 1 cell ml(-1) in cultures. Low concentrations of diazotrophic cyanobacteria were detected and this community was dominated at 99.9% by picoplankton hybridized to the Nitro821 probe, specific for unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacteria (UCYN). Among filamentous cyanobacteria only 0.02 filament ml(-1) of Richelia were detected in the eastern basin, while small (0.7-1.5 mu m) and large (2.5-3.2 mu m) Nitro821-targeted cells were recovered at all stations with a mean concentration of 3.5 cell ml(-1). The affiliation of the small Nitro821-targeted cells to UCYN-A was confirmed by 16S and nifH phylogenies in the western Mediterranean Sea. In the central and the eastern Mediterranean Sea no 16S rDNA and nifH sequence from UCYN was obtained as cells concentration were close to, or below PCR detection limit. Bradyrhizobium sequences dominated nifH clone libraries from picoplanktonic size fractions. A few sequences of gamma-proteobacteria were also detected in the central Mediterranean Sea. While low phosphate and iron concentrations could explain the absence of Trichodesmium sp., the factors that prevent the development of UCYN-B and C remain unknown. We also propose that the dominating picoplankters probably developed specific strategies, such as associations with protists or particles, and/or photosynthetic activity, to acquire carbon for sustaining diazotrophy. A fleet-metier based approach of the small scale fishing activity in the French West Indies Auteur(s) : Guyader, Olivier Reynal, Lionel Demaneche, Sebastien Berthou, Patrick Daures, Fabienne Éditeur(s) : Proceedings of the 60th GCFI Conference, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, 5 - 9 Nov 2007. pp.1-11 Résumé : The development of the ecosystemic approach for fisheries supposes to improve integrated analysis of fisheries by considering the biological as well as the socio-economic dimensions of the exploitation. A prerequisite for integrated analysis is the improvement in the knowledge of fleets structure, fleet evolution and allocation of fishing effort in the different fisheries. However, small scale fisheries are often characterized by a lack of knowledge on the vessel fishing activity. This paper first presents a data collection methodology recently applied in the French West (Guadeloupe and Martinique) for the follow up of the whole vessel population. Based on a statistical analysis of these data sets, the paper develops a fleet-metier matrix giving the possibility to identify the structure of the fleet, the metier polyvalence of the vessels but also the origin of fishing mortality on the different exploited fishing resources. We then discuss the interest of this methodology for fisheries analysis and the perspective in terms of fisheries management at regional levels. A geostatistical method for assessing biomass of tuna aggregations around moored fish aggregating devices with star acoustic surveys Auteur(s) : Doray, Mathieu Petitgas, Pierre Josse, E Éditeur(s) : NRC Résumé : Universal kriging was used to model the spatio-temporal variability in the acoustic density of tuna aggregations recorded during star echosounding surveys around moored fish aggregating devices (FADs) in Martinique (Lesser Antilles). The large-scale deterministic drift in the tuna spatial distribution was modeled using an advection-diffusion equation applied to animal grouping. Residuals from the drift were modeled as a random component with small-scale spatial correlation. An estimation variance formula was derived from this deterministic-statistical mixed model to assess the mean precision of density estimates of daytime tuna aggregation. The mean relative error obtained with our star design for daytime surveys was 24%. The methodology was applied to estimate daily maxima of tuna biomass around moored FADs during four monthly sea cruises. The daily peak of tuna biomass aggregated around moored FADs was 9 t on average (standard deviation = 4). Estimation variances for different survey designs were compared for optimizing sampling strategy. Organisation spatio-temporelle des peuplements ichtyologiques dans deux lagunes côtières : au Portugal et en Guadeloupe Auteur(s) : Aliaume, C Monteiro, C Louis, M Hoai, Tl Lasserre, G Éditeur(s) : Gauthier-Villars Résumé : Fish communities from two lagoon ecosystems, Ria Formosa (Portugal) and Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin (Guadeloupe), show interesting similarities of spatial and temporal organization. On the temporal scale, three community changes are observed in both systems, corresponding to massive arrivals and/or departures of migratory species. However, these migrations are more conspicuous in the Ria Formosa than in the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. On a spatial scale, the community structure is also largely determined by migratory species, whose abundance is a factor of homogenization. This is clearly observed in Ria Formosa, where the lagoon selection applies on a regional scale. Conversely, the community of sedentary fish identifies remarkable stations affected by chronic aggressions such as tourism or pollution. An explicative analysis, comprising a discriminant analysis and multiple regressions was realized on the data collected in the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. This analysis made it possible to determine the important environmental descriptors in the two complementary processes involved in recruitment: migrant availability, which determines the temporal organization of the fish assemblage. These migrations are explained by water temperature and salinity, two descriptors controlled by climatic conditions; the settlement process, which determines the spatial organization of the fish assemblage. This is explained by habitat descriptors such as visibility and turtlegrass blade length, or trophic descriptors, such as primary production, zooplankton density or nitrate concentration. La ciguatera dans l'Ocean Indien: etude des poissons veneneux des bancs de l'Archipel des Mascareignes et de la crete centrale de l'Ocean Indien Auteur(s) : Lebeau, Alain Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : In this paper, the authors present a general table of the present extension of ciguatoxism in the Mascarene Islands. A statistically significant relation exists between the variations of poisonous fish proportions and the periods of tropical cyclones in this fishing area. The tests showed that the ciguatera known from Mauritius, Rodriguez, Chagos and Saya-de-Malha Islands, is also present in the Amirantes Islands. The coastal ichtyosarcotoxism of the Reunion was also studied; this phenomenon does not constitute an obstacle to the activity of the artisanal fishery. Combining sensitivity and uncertainty analysis to evaluate the impact of management measures with ISIS-Fish: marine protected areas for the Bay of Biscay anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) fishery Auteur(s) : Lehuta, Sigrid Mahevas, Stephanie Petitgas, Pierre Pelletier, Dominique Éditeur(s) : Oxford Univ Press Résumé : Spatio-seasonal explicit simulation models can predict the impact of spatial management measures on marine fish populations and fishing activities. As fisheries are complex systems, fisheries simulation models are often complex, with many uncertain parameters. Here, the methodology is provided to deliver fishery diagnostics within an uncertainty context using a complex simulation tool. A sensitivity analysis of the model is performed on model outputs using partial least-squares to identify the most sensitive parameters. The impact of several management measures is then simulated using a statistical simulation design taking into account the uncertainty of the selected sensitive parameters. This approach was applied to the Bay of Biscay anchovy stock using the ISIS-Fish (Integration of Spatial Information for Simulation of Fisheries) model to assess the impact of imposing marine protected areas (MPAs) conditionally on parameter uncertainty. The diagnostic appeared to be highly sensitive to the mortality of larvae and juveniles, growth, and reproduction. The uncertainty of the values of these parameters did not permit any of the simulated MPA designs to be proposed. However, according to anchovy catch and biomass, the simulations allowed the low impact of closure duration to be shown and underscored the utility of protecting such key processes as spawning. Tome 2 Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Biseau, Alain Charuau, Anatole Biseau, Alain Résumé : The theory of the evaluation of discards applied in phase 1 to the main eight species is described. Then, for each one, the biological parameters are calculated and diagnosis based on length cohorts analysis JONES (1981) are proposed The gadoids, whiting and cod, are heavily exploited and the catches are always recruitment dependant. The bottom species (monks, megrim, rays and Nephrops) are fully exploited or lightlhy over - exploited. Using the fisheries statistics of the data basis about the Celtic Sea, a first classification of fleets is proposed with the individual fishing powers.
Re-assessing the French small-scale coastal fisheries: from fleet activity to economic performance Auteur(s) : Daures, Fabienne Van Iseghem, Sylvie Demaneche, Sebastien Leblond, Emilie Brigaudeau, Cecile Guyader, Olivier Berthou, Patrick Éditeur(s) : ICES 2008 Annual Science Conference, 22-26 september 2008, HALIFAX, CANADA Résumé : While the majority of small-scale coastal fisheries are found in developing nations, a considerable number exist in developed nations as well. Indeed, small-scale fisheries are strongly represented in all European Union (EU) Member States, 81% and 87% of the EU 25 whole fleet is composed of vessels less than 12 and 15 meters long respectively. In 2000, European regulation established a fisheries data collection framework including economic information requirements in order to provide the scientific basis for the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy. This paper presents the methodology designed to collect the relevant economic data and characterize the status of the French fleets from an economic perspective. Based on stratified sampling plan including the following of small-scale fleets, data collection by field survey is based on a single questionnaire for all the fleets, whatever the size of the vessel, the gear used, the fishing area or the species targeted. It provides a large data set including earnings and costs but also capital, employment, fishing activity figures. Statistical analysis through a revenue model gives the basis for a re-assessing of the small-scale fisheries contribution to national production. Economic indicators such as gross added value, revenues, and direct employment are derived from the data set. The significant role of small scale fisheries in the French fishing sector is established and the impact of the rising fuel costs in fisheries is discussed. Etude d'une gestion optimale des pecheries de langoustines et de poissons demersaux en mer Celtique Auteur(s) : Laurec, Alain Charuau, Anatole Perodou, Jean-bernard Nedelec, Daniel Biseau, Alain Durand, Jean-louis Rivoalen, Jean-jacques Dupouy, Herve Résumé : The general study, scheduled from 1984 to 1986, aims at providing a judgement about the fisheries in the Celtic Sea. This area has been chosen because it is frequented by EEC vessels with, for the time being, a large majority of French vessels. Activities there are easier to monitor than anywhere else as coastal fisheries are little developed in the area. The final product will consist of a certain number of hypotheses about the planning strategies that could be implemented in the Celtic Sea. The main idea is, firstly, to conduct analytical studies, stock by stock, in order then, to synthesize them into a model integrating the interactions between fleets in relation to their target species. A bio-economical model, deriving from the latter, will enable the simulation of the consequences of the current planning procedures on the management of stocks and vessels. Évaluation des rejets sur la pêcherie de langoustine de Mer celtique Auteur(s) : Charuau, Anatole Résumé : If Sea Bass fish farming (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) is currently experiencing an increase in Southern Europe, it is vital, in order to better reflect raising structures, to control its wastes. In order to do so, quantifying this species' wastes is essential to be able to present simple excretion ratios, easily useable by the farmer. Those ratios have been based on nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon masses established on intensive farming and 4 batches belonging to his stock (averaging 24, 5 to 362, 5 g). Each batch was followed up during the course of 1 month and fish farming in its entirety for 2 months. Mass assessments for nitrogen and phosphorus were level ((intrants = extrants) but never precise, contrary to what can be found in bibliography. The main wastes defined were linked to the biomasses found as well as the food quantity fed. Sea Bass carbon excretion could not be clearly defined. According to these follow ups, phosphorus would be the element better utilized by Sea Bass considering nutritional provision. Nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon quantities rejected through farming are very high since for nitrogen and carbon, 90% of the ingestion would be rejected in the environment. L'exploitation des cephalopodes - situation et perspectives Auteur(s) : Mesnil, B. Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : The dwindling of the stocks of some marine animals traditionally fished is driving the producers to consider the exploitation of species which were seen as of lesser interest up to now. Among the latter, cephalopods hold a specific position. In the first place, they are not a new resource so to speak, having been eaten in Asian and Mediterranean countries for a long time, and, above all, they've been the object of a growing interest for a few years now. It is encouraging to see that this tendency is very distinct in our country where it can be thought that producers and consumers are now aware of the value of this abounding species. The actions aimed at optimising their exploitation are thus facilitated but they suffer from the imprecision of the statistical data on the fisheries. This data is indeed necessary to evaluate the availability of the stocks and to direct the production through a rational management. Consequences des recents changements de maillage sur les rendements de la flotille langoustiniere lorientaise en Mer Celtique Auteur(s) : Morizur, Yvon Charuau, Anatole Éditeur(s) : ICES-CM-1981/K:36 Résumé : Some trawlers from Lorient (France) are fishing for Nephrops at the North of 48th parallel. During the last years, the mesh size of their cod-end changed twice. It increased from 45 mm to 60 mm at the end of year 1978 and to 70 mm at the end of year 1979.'. Whereas the change to 60 mm seems to have no immediate- effect on Nephrops landings, the increase from 60 mm to 70 mm results in a loss in Nephrops landings of 30-40 %. That loss in Nephrops landings goes with an increase in some by-catches species as whiting, cod and hake.
