The sea surface tem-perature is explicitly introduced into four natural growth functions,among which the Cobb-Douglas function best adjusts the availabledata. Besides, a Cobb-Douglas harvest function is also estimated, in-dicating that shrimp production in French Guiana is highly sensitive tothe shrimp stock, which implies that global warming may have strongeconomic implications. We nally consider a centralized resource man-agement of the French Guiana shrimp shery, that is undertaken invarious trend scenarios concerning the sea surface temperature. 'Syndrome 93' is a seasonal juvenile vibriosis caused by Vibrio penaeicida which affects Litopenaeus stylirostris in grow-out ponds in New Caledonia. This study assessed the toxic activities of extracellular products (ECPs) from V: penaeicida, V. alginolyticus and V, nigripulchritudo using in vivo injections in healthy juvenile L. stylirostris (= Penaeus stylirostris) and in vitro assays on shrimp primary cell cultures and the fish cell line epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC). Toxic effects of ECPs were demonstrated for all pathogenic Vibrio strains tested both in vivo and in vitro, but for shrimp only; no effect was observed on the fish cell line. ECP toxicity for New Caledonian V. penaeicida was found only after cultivation at low temperature (20 degrees C) and not at higher temperature (30 degrees C). This points to the fact that 'Syndrome 93' episodes are triggered by temperature drops. The assays used here demonstrate the usefulness of primary shrimp cell cultures to study virulence mechanisms of shrimp pathogenic bacteria. Autochthonous production of organic matter is limited in these flowing rivers and is mainly represented by scarce filamentous green algae and an abundant epilithic biofilm growing on wet stones in the river bed. Stable isotope analysis was used to quantify the relative importance of biofilm and other riverine allochthonous and autochthonous food sources in the diet of tropical shrimps (Palaemonidae, Atyidae and Xiphocarididae) and fishes (Gobiidae and Eleotridae) consumed by the local people. The epilithic biofilm was exploited by most species, constituted an important source of autochthonous carbon and was an important source of organic matter production at the base of freshwater food webs in Caribbean rivers. Biofilm percentages in the diet reached 32% for molluscs, 85% for atyid shrimps, 29% for xiphocaridid shrimps, 14% for palaemonid shrimps and 13% for fish. Assessment of biofilm in nine rivers showed that blue and red cyanobacteria were quantitatively dominant with a moderately rich diatom flora. These results address the interactions between river biofilm and Caribbean freshwater fauna where trophic links between consumers and their potential resources have poorly been documented. Here we describe the development of microanalytical techniques using the new SHRIMP SI ion microprobe to measure the abundances of OH− (as a proxy for water) in volcanic glass and nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs). Samples were first analysed at the Carnegie Institute of Washington (CIW) on their Cameca ims-6f with calibrations based on previous FTIR and manometry analyses. SHRIMP SI is a large geometry ion microprobe and is currently mainly used for O and S isotope analyses. The analytical protocol used here incorporates multiple collection of 16O− and 16O1H− allowing rapid measurements. A single calibration line incorporating all glasses and NAMs for the SHRIMP SI allows calibration of 16O1H−/16O− to H2O over a wide range in concentration (50 to 15 000 ppm H2O). This calibration line has around a 10% uncertainty, which appears to be limited only by sample heterogeneity. The current background for SHRIMP analysis is between 20–40 ppm but this is expected to improve with improved pumping on the source chamber. A current limitation to water analysis of NAM samples, by any technique, is having a range of standard materials to enable OH− calibration to absolute H2O concentrations. Data are presented for 7 NAM samples (2 olivines, 2 orthopyroxenes and 3 clinopyroxenes) that appear to be promising as potential standards for international laboratory H2O measurements. These NAM samples have been analysed and characterised here by SHRIMP SI, FTIR, EMP and the Cameca ims-6f ion microprobe at CIW. Effect of an herbivorous diet on energy balance of Litopenaeus vannamei at selected ontogenetic stages Auteur(s) : Maldonado, Carlos Cuzon, Gerard Guzman, Emilio Brito, Roberto Soto, Luis Arena, Leticia Gaxiola, Gabriela Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : Herbivorous (20% vegetable protein, 40% carbohydrate) and carnivorous diets (40% marine animal protein, 20% carbohydrate) were experimentally tested to assess their effect on the energy balance and energetic substrates utilized by postlarvae (PL's /15 days) and juvenile shrimp (3-6 g) of Litopenaeus vannamei. Postlarval stage 60 (PL60, early juveniles) shrimps fed HeD and CaD diets, then late juveniles (3-6 g) acclimated to the same diets were tested for their respective energy partitioning potential. No significant differences (p>0.05) on growth were obtained in early juveniles (mean final wet weight of 0.19 g). However in late juvenile stages a significant difference (p<0.05) in growth rate was observed. In terms of energy partitioning, both early and late juveniles seem to spend more energy in respiratory metabolism than in the elimination of excretion products. A change in feed composition based on quality protein sources induced some modifications on shrimp's activity measured by heat increment. Shrimps fed with an herbivorous diet showed a higher heat increment. Interestingly, the early stages of L vannamei display a remarkable capacity to assimilate a plant protein-based and a high carbohydrate level diet. Such capacity with a stimulation of genes would lead to a good adaptation of juveniles receiving all-plant diets to sustain growth performances up to a marketable size. Experimental evaluation of co-culture of juvenile sea cucumbers, Holothuria scabra (Jaeger), with juvenile blue shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) Auteur(s) : Purcell, S Patrois, Jacques Fraisse, N Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : The co-culture of juvenile sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (Jaeger), or 'sandfish', with juvenile blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) was tested by growing groups in co-culture and monoculture for 3 weeks in tanks with enriched sand substratum. Feed was supplied on trays, accessible only to shrimp. Survival of shrimp and sandfish was high in all treatments (73-100%). Growth of shrimp did not differ between monoculture and co-culture, but sandfish grew significantly slower in co-culture (P=0.03), although their sand burying and surface foraging were apparently unaffected by shrimp (P=0.76). However, shrimp increased the levels of total ammonia-N in tanks, which related inversely with sandfish growth (P=0.04). Conversely, sandfish did not appear to lower the water quality for shrimp culture. While sandfish bioturbate sediments and eat organic deposits, the juveniles did not significantly reduce the organic content of sand in tanks. Co-culturing juveniles of the two species in earthen ponds appears feasible, with no detriment to shrimp production, presenting a cost-effective method for growing sandfish to larger sizes for restocking. These findings underpin further studies to test the viability of commercial co-culture of sandfish with blue shrimp at later stages in the production cycle of shrimp. Combined effect of temperature and salinity on osmoregulation of juvenile and subadult Penaeus stylirostris Auteur(s) : Lemaire, Pierrette Bernard, E Martinez-paz, J Chim, Liet Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : In New Caledonia, the "syndrome 93," which results in mass mortalities of farmed shrimp Penaeus stylirostris, occurs during the transitional and the cold seasons. The transitional season is characterized by an important fall in the average water temperature from 28 to 19 degreesC in 2 weeks. Besides this marked temperature fall, there are also nyctemeral temperature changes of up to 7 degreesC in 12 h. The cold season is characterized by an average water temperature of 19 degreesC with extreme lows of 14 degreesC. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of temperature and its variations on the osmoregulatory capacity of juvenile (7-10 g average weight) and subadult (25 g average weight) shrimps subjected to conditions of different salinity. A reduction in temperature level resulted in a decreased osmoregulatory capacity (OC) (defined as the difference between the osmolality of the haemolymph and that of sea water) at low salinity (hyper-CO) and at high salinity (hypo-CO), respectively, below and above the isoosmotic point (26.2 ppt). In subadult shrimps, the hyper-CO was affected when temperature dropped from 26 to 22 degreesC. The hypo-CO was modified only when temperature decreased down to 15 degreesC. Furthermore, the sensitiveness of osmoregulation to temperature changes was dependent on the developmental stage of the shrimp. Subadults were more sensitive than juvenile animals. The value of the isoosmotic point, which did not depend on the shrimp developmental stage, increased when temperature decreased to 17 or 15 degreesC. Our results provide an additional explanation of the "syndrome 93" and display the unfavourable influence of marked temperature drop on shrimp health. Our research could provide a possibility of seeking a nutritional and/or genetic solution to improve the capacity of the shrimps to maintain their homeostasis within a rearing medium with fluctuating temperatures. Digestive enzyme activity and food ingesta in juvenile shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) as a function of body weight Auteur(s) : Gamboa Delgado, Julián Molina Poveda, César Cahu, Chantal Éditeur(s) : Blackwell science Résumé : A study was conducted to evaluate variations of digestive enzyme activities in Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone) reared in commercial ponds under semi-intensive conditions. Shrimp were collected at each body weight increase of 2 g. As the shrimp grew (2-12 g), significant increases in the activities of lipase and chymotrypsin were observed. The total protease activity decreased from 6 g onwards. Trypsin activity showed a peak at 6 g and amylase activity increased two-fold after 2 g. Additionally, the stomach contents were analysed microscopically for shrimp between 2 and 10 g. Plant matter contributed above 30% of the total stomach content in 6-, 8- and 10-g shrimp. Detritus represented 58% and 62% of the total stomach content in 2- and 4-g shrimp, respectively, decreasing to 33-43% at greater shrimp weights. Artificial feed showed a maximum contribution of 20% in 6-g shrimp. The present results show changes in the enzyme activity after the shrimp reach 6 g in body weight, evidenced by a decrease in total protease and an increase in lipase and amylase activities. The amylase/protease ratio was 2.6 in 2-g shrimp and increased steadily to 9.6 in 12-g shrimp. These findings suggest an adaptation of the enzymatic activity to diets with lower protein content as body weight increases, and may be related to the variation of the different items found in the stomach. Probiotic P-acidilactici application in shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris culture subject to vibriosis in New Caledonia Auteur(s) : Castex, Mathieu Chim, Liet Pham, Dominique Lemaire, Pierrette Wabete, Nelly Nicolas, Jean-louis Schmidely, P Mariojouls, C Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : We studied the effects of a lactic acid bacterium, Pediococcus acidilactici (strain MA 18/5M, CNCM), as a dietary probiotic on growth performance and some nutritional and microbiological aspects of the shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Experimental shrimp culture was carried out over 10 weeks, using floating cages of 14 m(2) each set in earthen ponds, in a New Caledonia farm affected by "Summer syndrome", a septicaemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo. The experiment design testing probiotic-coated pellets against control was replicated in two earthen ponds. High mortalities, characteristic of Summer syndrome, were observed during the first 2 weeks of the trial. The probiotic improved production in the treated cages from both ponds with increases in the survival rate (7% and 15% respectively) and final biomass (8% and 12% respectively). No differences were recorded among treatments on growth performances, but significant lower food conversion ratios were obtained with probiotic treatment. After 5 weeks of rearing, the Hepatosomatic Index and the adjusted dry weight of the digestive gland were significantly increased by 10% and by 9% respectively in shrimps treated with probiotic. In the meantime, the specific activities of alpha amylase and trypsin in the digestive gland showed a significant effect of the probiotic treatment with respective increases by 35% and 55%. The rise in total trypsin activity following morning feeding was also enhanced by the probiotic treatment (P < 0.001). The highest concentration of probiotic (between 10(4)-10(5) CFU g(-1) of fresh gut) in the shrimp gut was obtained 2 h after feeding. The concentration remained high for 4 h after feeding before decreasing until the next meal. Total bacterial counts on Marine agar and TCBS in the gut were significantly lowered by the probiotic treatment over the 10 weeks of the experiment. Additionally, during the first 2 weeks, prevalence and load of V nigripulchritudo strains in haemolymph was lower in animals fed with the probiotic diet. This study demonstrated, under pond conditions, that feeding shrimp with live terrestrial lactic acid bacteria can be an effective treatment for improving shrimp culture affected by vibriosis. Combined effect of exposure to ammonia and hypoxia on the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris survival and physiological response in relation to molt stage Auteur(s) : Mugnier, Chantal Zipper, Etienne Goarant, Cyrille Lemonnier, Hugues Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The effect of ambient ammonia, hypoxia and combination of both on survival and the physiological and immunological response of the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris in relation to molt stage was studied. Shrimp were submitted to 44.0-71.5 mg 1(-1) total ammonia-N corresponding to 2.0 mg 1(-1) unionized ammonia NH3-N and/or to 1.5 mg O-2 1(-1) (4.3 kPa) for 24 hours. Survival was recorded and the molt stages of both dead and surviving shrimp determined. Only shrimp in intermolt and premolt stages were sampled for analysis of haemolymph. Haemolymph was assayed for osmoregulatory capacity (OC), magnesium ion (Mg2+), calcium ion (Ca2+), total proteins, oxyhaemocyanin, lactate, glucose and total haemocyte count (THC). Low mortalities were recorded for shrimp submitted independently to ammonia or hypoxia. Seventy five percent of dead shrimp were in early post molt (stage A) in ammonia treatment, while hypoxia affected mainly late premolt animals (stage D-2). A synergic effect of ammonia and hypoxia combination (A+ O-2 treatment) on mortality was observed, affecting nearly exclusively shrimp in late premolt stage D-2. Analysis of molt stage repartition at the end of the experiment suggests that ammonia treatment may have accelerated molting. The common physiological response of shrimp to the different treatments was characterized by a reduced OC and an increase in Ca2+. Increase in Mg2+ could not be validated by the statistical analysis, as well as glycaemia variations. Plasmatic lactate level increased and THC decreased in shrimp submitted to hypoxia and the combination of hypoxia and ammonia. Total proteins concentration was reduced in ammonia and A+O-2 treatments. The effect was more pronounced in late premolt shrimp than in intermolt shrimp. Combination of ammonia and hypoxia led to a physiological response stronger than this observed for ammonia-alone and/or hypoxia-alone treatments, except for oxyhaemocyanin. Effet des conditions environnementales sur le développement des pathologies à Vibrio dans les élevages de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie Auteur(s) : Lemonnier, Hugues Éditeur(s) : Université de La Rochelle Résumé : Shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia is a developing industry, exclusively based on the species Litopenaeus stylirostris. However, it is subject to mortalities during grow out as observed all over the world. Since 1993, shrimp reared during the cold period are affected by a disease named "syndrome 93". As a consequence, the whole industry has become seasonal and produces essentially during the warm season. The climatic conditions during the periods of transition between the two main seasons could be responsible for an environmental stress and the origin reason for mortality outbreaks. Stocking density is the main risk factor. It increases the probability of the appearance and development of the epizooty in the pond. The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo, was identified for the first time in December 1997 in an intensive shrimp farm (DF). It has become enzootic ever since and is expressed after 50d of rearing. Since 2003, two others farms located near DF have developed the disease. As a consequence, the summer syndrome is considered to be a potential threat for all the industry. Between 1991 and 2005, the increase of feed input and nitrogen levels in feed has led to a significant increase in the growth rate over the years in the farms affected by the disease. In consequence, an early eutrophication of the water is observed, which is concomitant with the beginning of the mortality outbreaks. An early eutrophication and the virulence level of the pathogen are considered as the main risk factors of the disease. Factors may act synergistically to explain the summer syndrome. As part of a multidisciplinary approach (pathology physiology environment), two high-frequency surveys were carried out to analyse the pond ecosystem. Since the feed quantity increases with the biomass of shrimp, the eutrophication level of the pond ecosystem will also tend to increase with the duration of rearing. During the first part of the rearing, the abundance of each picoplankton type is exceptionally high and picophytoplankton dominated the autotrophic compartment. The nanophytoplankton dominated the second part of the rearing and was more unstable. The shift from pico to nanophytoplankton could be considered as an environmental stress and was observed in relation to the beginning of the mortalities, whatever the disease. Shift intensity could play a role by inducing directly or indirectly a stress for shrimp and/or a growth and/or virulence factors of the pathogen. Results from sediment studies show that mortality was best characterized by TAN concentration in pore water and even more when the TAN concentration was high. TAN and pH are potential stress factors for shrimp reared in ponds affected by these diseases. L'aquaculture mondiale de crevettes est un secteur à très forte croissance. Toutefois, les problèmes liés aux maladies dans les élevages ne cessent d'augmenter depuis 1980. Au cours du développement de la filière de Nouvelle-Calédonie, deux épisodes saisonniers de mortalités associées à la présence de Vibrio pathogènes sont apparus et ont fortement perturbé les techniques et les schémas de production. Les premières mortalités hivernales, décrites sous le nom de « syndrome 93 » ont été observées en mai 1993. Elles ont affecté depuis tous les élevages de saison froide de toutes les fermes de production. Les conditions climatiques pendant les périodes de transitions entre les deux principales saisons caractérisant le climat de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, seraient responsables d'un stress environnemental à l'origine du déclenchement du syndrome 93. La densité initiale d'ensemencement, apparaît comme le principal facteur de risque, augmentant la probabilité d'apparition de la maladie et l'ampleur de ses effets. Le « syndrome d'été » a été identifié pour la première fois en 1997 dans une ferme pratiquant une production intensive. Il s'est déclaré depuis 2003 dans deux autres fermes géographiquement proches. Les mortalités apparaissent 58 jours en moyenne après l'ensemencement des post-larves dans les bassins. La recherche d'une croissance maximale des animaux a induit, avec les années, une intensification progressive du système caractérisée par une augmentation de la quantité d'aliment distribuée. L'examen des données historiques fait apparaître une eutrophisation du milieu de plus en plus précoce concomitante au déclenchement des mortalités. En l'état actuel de nos connaissances, cette évolution précoce de l'écosystème en présence de façon récurrente de la souche hautement pathogène du Vibrio incriminé et à une période où la fréquence des mues des crevettes est élevée, constitue le principal facteur de risque de la maladie. Avec l'apport croissant en aliment, la colonne d'eau évolue vers une autotrophie croissante alors que le sédiment devient de plus en plus hétérotrophe au fur et à mesure que l'élevage progresse. Au cours du processus d'eutrophisation, le compartiment autotrophe montre une succession de deux assemblages. Le picophytoplancton domine sur la première partie de l'élevage et laisse place à du nanophytoplancton en seconde partie. Cette phase de transition, concomitante à l'apparition des mortalités quel que soit le syndrome, caractérise un stress environnemental dont l'intensité pourrait favoriser ou non le déclenchement des mortalités. Les suivis de différents indicateurs dans les sédiments - pH, potentiel d'oxydoréduction et concentration en ammoniaque dans l'eau interstitielle indiquent dans les bassins déclarant les épizooties des conditions qui ont été définies expérimentalement comme potentiellement plus stressantes pour les animaux. Combined effect of external ammonia and molt stage on the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris physiological response Auteur(s) : Mugnier, Chantal Justou, Carole Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : The effect of ambient ammonia and molt stage on the physiological response of the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris was studied. Shrimps were submitted to 54.6 mg l(-1) ammonia-N (1.76 mg l(-1) NH3-N) for 24 h. Only shrimps in stages C, D-0, D-1 and D-2 were used for the analysis. Haemolymph was assayed for osmoregulatory capacity (OC), magnesium ion (Mg ion), total proteins, oxyhaemocyanin, lactate and glucose. Molt stage had an effect on OC, Mg ion and total proteins in control shrimps, and on OC, Mg ion and lactate in treated animals. Ammonia treatment decreased OC and lactate, and increase Mg ion concentration in haemolymph, for all molt stages. It decreased significantly total proteins and oxyhaemocyanin for stages D-1 and D-2, and increased glucose concentration for stages C and Do. There was a combined effect of treatment and molt stage only on total proteins concentration. The effects of an external factor (ammonia), an internal one (molt stage) and the combination of both, and the usefulness of using physiological parameters measured in this study as tools to detect stress, are discussed. Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries, using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis Auteur(s) : Fuchs, Jacques Martin, Jean-louis M. Populus, Jacques Résumé : After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Furthermore, it appears that production sustainability depends on many factors among which socio-economy and ecolo gy are of prime importance.
The STD3 project titled « Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis )) was initiated in 1994, with the aim to study the sustainability of marine shrimp aquaculture in tropical areas, main! y Indonesia and Vietnam, through the following tasks: (i) improve site selection and study the impact of aquaculture on marine environments presenting a variable sensitivity to organic sewage, (ii) analyse the socio-economical aspects and profitability of the aquaculture industry and of common resources (iii) use remote sensing and geographical data bases for diagnosis and monitoring of site degradation (iv) reinforce the capacity of Asian
scientists through training.
Severa! aquaculture sites have been investigated in the Lampung region (South Sumatra, Indonesia), the Mekong delta (Vietnam) and on the West coast of New-Caledonia, providing a large range of typical ecosystems encountered in Asia and in the Pacifie, from coralline sites to coastal plains with mangrove and deltaic areas. The study concerned the spatial structure and seasonal influence of these ecosystems, the temporal variation during the course of the project (3 years) and the relation between the ecological structure and farm productions.
Remote sensing provides a synoptic vision over large land expanses. Severa! scenes were processed for landuse mapping using conventional classification techniques. Concerning water quality assessment, a general relation for the Java sea was found between image and field data in terms of total suspended matter. Applying this relation to a new site in Sumatra has provided an initial approach to water type and, together with land use mapping, a preliminary assessment of the suitability of the area to shrimp aquaculture development.
Socio-economic research has been focused on the identification ofneeds for collective action, including public policy, in the perspective of shrimp farming sustainability. The main concern is in the regulation of shrimp farming intensification and extensification at the scale of coastal ecosystemic entities in a common property resource management perspective. The common considered here is coastal water quality. Comparing the local development profiles and the institutional grounds for the design and implementation of collective management rules shows that variables such as land tenure system, farm owner socio-economic profile, social homogeneity or heterogeneity of the farmers are key factors to analyse the potential for sustainability. The defmition of
water quality and the possible means to ensure its collective management are discussed. The main conclusion is that the economie incentives to farming development are strong but there is no significant difference among traditional, semi-intensive and intensive systems in terms of economie efficiency or wealth distribution.
The description of the functioning of the different kinds of ecosystems make it possible to give an advice concerning the positioning of the activity inside the ecosystem, and furthermore to have a reference state in order to determine the impact of the activity on the coastal environnement. This impact can be summarized as an increase in the concentration of total suspended matt€?r, of particulate organic matter and of sulfate reducing bacterias. This organic ma~.er is either issued from rearing activities or from telluric origine, due to mangrove eradication when building the ponds.
An evaluation of the relationship existing between productivity and characteristics of each ecosystem bas been conducted by correlating ecological indicators data (concentration of total suspended matter, particulate organic matter, chlorophyll, percentage of pheopigments in total pigments and cyanobacteria and sulfatereducing bacteria in water and sediments) with the average production of the farms. This comparison lead to the compilation of a scale of observed production integrating the range of these environmental parameters with shrimp production levels, bound to facilitate the positioning of shrimp farming in relation with the confmement leve! of each ecosystem.
Lastly, ali geographie data originated from the various compartments of the study have been geo-referenced and loaded into a geographical information system. This allows to display any query made on spatial variables and their related statistical data, including the ir variations over the last few years and to reveal patterns and phenomena otherwise not obvious. Le programme mis en oeuvre par la DRV (Paris, CREMA-L'Houmeau, DELIAO Brest, COP Tahiti, GIE/RA Nouvelle Calédonie), dans le cadre d'un projet européen STD3 «(Sciences et Technique au Service du Développement», en collaboration avec l'Université de Montpellier II, l'Ecole Nationale d'Agronomie de Rennes, l'ITC (Hollande), l'Institut Océanographique de Nha Trang (Vietnam), le BADC de Jepara et le BPPT de Jakarta (Indonésie), avait pour but la mise au point de méthodes permettant d'améliorer la sélection des sites ainsi que le suivi du développement et de l'impact de l'aquaculture des crevettes Péneides en milieu tropical pour éviter la surexploitation. Conflicting structural and geochronological data from the Ibituruna quartz-syenite (SE Brazil): Effect of protracted "hot" orogeny and slow cooling rate? We have measured the Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) in samples from the Ibituruna sill to unravel its magnetic fabric that is regarded as a proxy for its magmatic fabric. A large magnetic anisotropy, dominantly due to magnetite, and a consistent magnetic fabric have been determined over the entire Ibituruna massif. The magmatic foliation and lineation are strikingly parallel to the solid-state mylonitic foliation and lineation measured in the country-rock. Altogether, these observations suggest that the Ibituruna sill was emplaced during the high temperature (similar to 750 degrees C) regional deformation and was deformed before full solidification coherently with its country-rock. Unexpectedly, geochronological data suggest a rather different conclusion. LA-ICP-MS and SHRIMP ages of zircons from the Ibituruna quartz-syenite are in the range 530-535 Ma and LA-ICP-MS ages of zircons and monazites from synkinematic leucocratic veins in the country-rocks suggest a crystallization at similar to 570-580 Ma, i.e., an HT deformation >35My older than the emplacement of the Ibituruna quartz-syenite. Conclusions from the structural and the geochronological studies are therefore conflicting. A possible explanation arises from Ar-40-Ar-39 thermochronology. We have dated amphiboles from the quartz-syenite, and amphiboles and biotites from the country-rock. Together with the ages of monazites and zircons in the country-rock, Ar-40-Ar-39 mineral ages suggest a very low cooling rate: <3 degrees C/My between 570 and similar to 500 Ma and similar to 5 degrees C/My between 500 and 460 Ma. Assuming a protracted regional deformation consistent over tens of My, under such stable thermal conditions the fabric and microstructure of deformed rocks may remain almost unchanged even if they underwent and recorded strain pulses separated by long periods of time. This may be a characteristic of slow cooling "hot orogens" that rocks deformed at significantly different periods during the orogeny, but under roughly unchanged temperature conditions, may display almost indiscernible microstructure and fabric. Feasibility of polyculture of blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris and goldlined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus in a mesocosm system Auteur(s) : Luong, Trung Cong Hochard, Sebastien Royer, Florence Lemonnier, Hugues Letourneur, Yves Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Science Bv Résumé : The study was conducted to (1) estimate the effects of polyculture of blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris with goldlined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus on production, environmental quality and water and sediment metabolism and (2) to determine if blue shrimp and goldlined rabbitfish polyculture is possible. The experiment was carried out for 12 weeks in a mesocosm system that consisted of 12 circular outdoor mesocosm fiberglass tanks (1.7 m2, 1275 L water volume). Shrimp (2.9 g) were randomly stocked at density of 15 shrimp.m− 2 without rabbitfish (control), with rabbitfish (25.5 g) at low density (1.2 fish.m− 2) (LDRB) and high density (2.4 fish.m− 2) (HDRB). Results indicated that goldlined rabbitfish S. lineatus did not affect shrimp growth performance. At the end of the experiment, the combined shrimp and rabbitfish yields in the LDRB (213 g.m− 2) treatment and the HDRB (295 g.m− 2) treatment were significantly greater (P < 0.05) than the shrimp yield in the control (143 g.m− 2). Most of the water and sediment parameters were similar among treatments. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in gross primary productivity and respiration between the HDRB treatment and the control. It was concluded that the polyculture of blue shrimp with goldlined rabbitfish is technically possible without degradation of the environment in the culture system. Sécurisation des souches de crevettes d’élevage en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Résultats de la quarantaine et du conservatoire expérimental. Eléments pour la définition d’une stratégie de sécurisation des souches de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie Auteur(s) : Patrois, Jacques Goyard, Emmanuel Peignon, Jean-marie Dufour, Robert Ansquer, Dominique Résumé : A new strain of L. stylirostris was introduced in New Caledonia. Quarantine facilities were set up inland using RAS and artificial seawater. After 5 months of rearing, all the 16 initial families were still represented with a 50% average survival. Three samplings for known pathogens were made during that period, all of them negative. Half the animals were taken to outdoor ponds for rearing to reproduction size when the rest was used to test different arrangements for a biosecure rearing until reproduction.
Numerous spawnings and nauplii were obtained but larval rearings could not be completed.
Different options are considered for the set up of a biosecure facility allowing the rearing and the breeding of pathogen free strains of shrimp. Afin de disposer d’une plus forte diversité génétique exploitable, des producteurs calédoniens ont, en relation avec l’Ifremer, récemment introduit d’Hawaii une autre souche de crevette de l’espèce Litopenaeus stylirostris, domestiquée et garantie exempte de pathogènes. Malgré cette garantie sanitaire, les crevettes ont été maintenues en observation dans une quarantaine tertiaire pendant cinq mois avant la sortie et l’élevage d’une moitié de l’effectif en bassins terre extérieurs. L’autre moitié a été conservée dans les installations de quarantaine comme stock de secours au cas où un problème affecterait les crevettes élevées à l’extérieur. Les installations de quarantaine ont été progressivement transformées, tout en continuant les élevages, afin de réaliser un prototype de conservatoire biosécurisé. Les crevettes ont été élevées jusqu’à la taille de géniteurs en utilisant de l’eau de mer artificielle puis de l’eau de mer naturelle traitée au chlore. Des essais de reproduction et d’élevage larvaire ont été menés et de nombreuses pontes fécondées ont été obtenues mais les élevages larvaires, à une exception, n’ont pas dépassé le stade Zoé 3. Les analyses par PCR réalisées sur les crevettes du conservatoire ont montré que les mesures et précautions sanitaires qui avaient été prises avaient préservé le statut sanitaire “sans pathogènes” initial. Cette expérience a permis de mieux cerner les problèmes qui pouvaient se poser pour la mise en place et le fonctionnement d’installations biosécurisées utilisant des circuits fermés. Ces enseignements ont servi à répertorier les principales contraintes envisageables pour la réalisation d’un futur conservatoire crevette qui viendrait conforter et sécuriser les souches actuellement disponibles en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Plusieurs options sont proposées pour les crevettes devant entrer dans le conservatoire (sans quarantaine, quarantaine tertiaire, quarantaine primaire puis secondaire) et pour le type de fonctionnement du conservatoire. Les principaux critères pour le choix du site, l’utilisation de l’eau de mer et son traitement, les systèmes de recirculation sont abordés; et des schémas d’installations de quarantaine et de conservatoire sont proposés. The size of the farming earthen ponds (510 ha) and the subsequent production constraints make it difficult to use them as experimental units for random experiments. Moreover, since every pond has its own characteristics, ponds' effects cannot be ruled out, thus making it hard to define true replicates. In order to design future experiments under conditions resembling those used in production, we evaluated the possible use of floating cages as experimental units with the aim of assessing treatment effects with a reasonable statistical power. To this end, two sets of floating cages were placed respectively in two different ponds in a commercial farm. In both cases the zootechnical conditions in the cages were similar in post-larvae origin, management, and diet and feeding regime. The aim of the study was to evaluate on a technical basis the possibility of rearing shrimps in floating cages set up in earthen ponds and to assess this method from a statistical standpoint. Shrimps reared in and outside the cages showed comparable growth and survival rates. The variability in the zootechnical parameters between cages, expressed as the estimated coefficient of variation (CV) for survival rate, total final biomass (g), final body weight (g), daily increment in body weight (g day− 1) and FCR were 11.0, 13.7, 4.4, 5.4, and 7.0%, respectively. On the basis of these figures, we calculated for a given statistical power (80%) the number of replicates (cages) that would be required to reveal significant differences between two treatments, at a 5% level of significance. We found that for expected differences of 20% from the control mean, 3 and 6 floating cages per treatment would be reasonable to determine statistical differences for growth parameters and survival rate, respectively. Moreover, we showed a significant pond effect in regard to survival and growth between the two sets of cages. These results illustrated the within-farm variability among the ponds, and confirmed that the specific characteristics of each pond from the same farm make it difficult to use the ponds themselves as experimental units. The study demonstrates that rearing in floating cages is an economical, powerful and sensitive experimental tool for shrimp culture studies specifically carried out under conditions close to semi-intensive production. Effect of probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici on antioxidant defences and oxidative stress of Litopenaeus stylirostris under Vibrio nigripulchritudo challenge Auteur(s) : Castex, Mathieu Lemaire, Pierrette Wabete, Nelly Chim, Liet Éditeur(s) : Academic Press Ltd- Elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Antioxidant defences and induced oxidative stress tissue damage of the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris, under challenge with Vibrio nigriputchritudo, were investigated for a 72-h period. For this purpose, L stylirostris were first infected by immersion with pathogenic V. nigripulchritudo strain SFn1 and then antioxidant defences: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), Total antioxidant status (TAS), glutathiones and induced tissue damage (MDA and carbonyl proteins) were determined in the digestive gland at 0, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h post-infection (h.p.i.). In the meantime, TAS was also measured in the blood. Infection level of the shrimps during the challenge was followed by determining V. nigripulchritudo prevalence and load in the haemolymph of the shrimps. Changes in all these parameters during the 72-h.p.i. period were recorded for control shrimps and shrimps previously fed for one month with probiotic Pediococcus aciditactici MA18/5M at 10(7) CFU g(-1) of feed. Our results showed that immersion with V nigripulchritudo led to maximal infection level in the haemolymph at 24 h.p.i. preceding the mortality peak recorded at 48 h.p.i. Significant decreases in the antioxidant defences were detected from 24 h.p.i. and beyond that time infection leaded to increases in oxidative stress level and tissue damage.. Compared to control group, shrimps fed the probiotic diet showed lower infection (20% instead of 45% at 24 h.p.i. in the control group) and mortality (25% instead of 41.7% in the control group) levels. Moreover, infected shrimp fed the probiotic compared to uninfected control shrimps exhibited very similar antioxidant status and oxidative stress level. Compared to the infected control group, shrimps fed the probiotic sustained higher antioxidant defences and lower oxidative stress level. This study shows that bacterial infection leads to oxidative stress in L. stylirostris and highlighted a beneficial effect of P. acidilactici, suggesting both a competitive exclusion effect leading to a reduction of the infection level and/or an enhancement of the antioxidant status of the shrimps. Aspects moléculaires et biochimiques des stylicines, peptides multifonctionnels identifiés chez la crevette bleue du Pacifique Litopenaeus stylirostris (Crustacea, Decapoda) Auteur(s) : Rolland, Jean-luc Éditeur(s) : Université Montpellier 2 - Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc Résumé : The work reported here was motivated by the economical importance of the pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris farming where high mortality rates are due to bacterial and viral diseases. It consists in the characterisation of two original peptides, the first members of a new multifunctional family of peptides from peneide shrimps, the stylicines. Those two peptides, named stylicines 1 and 2, are negatively charged (pI < 6.0), and characterised by a proline-rich N-terminal region and a C-terminal region containing 13 cysteine residues. Stylicines are synthesized by heamocytes where they are stored within small cytoplasmic granules. To understand the role of these peptides in the immune response of shrimps to a vibrio infection, their recombinant forms were produced in E. coli BL21 (DE3) plysS, purified and characterised. The two rstylicines display biological anti-proliferative and blood clotting activities. Only rstylicine 1 displays antimicrobial activities: antifungal against Fusarium oxysporum (MIC<2.5μM) and bacteriostatic against Gram (−) bacteria, Vibrio sp. (MIC<80μM). Les travaux présentés dans ce mémoire ont été motivés par l’importance économique de l’élevage de la crevette bleue du pacifique Litopenaeus stylirostris dont les fortes mortalités sont principalement dues au développement de maladies bactériennes et virales. Ils ont consisté en la caractérisation des deux premiers membres d’une famille originale de peptides multifonctionnels présents chez les crevettes pénéides, les stylicines. Ces peptides, nommés stylicines 1 et 2, sont des peptides anioniques (pI < 6.0), formés d’une région amino-terminale riche en résidus de type proline et d’une région carboxyterminale riche de treize résidus cystéines. Ces molécules sont synthétisées et stockées dans de petits granules présents dans le cytoplasme des hémocytes. Pour mieux appréhender leurs rôles dans la réponse immunitaire des crevettes à une infection par des Vibrio, leurs formes recombinantes ont été produites dans E. coli BL21 (DE3) plysS, purifiées et caractérisées. Les deux rstylicines présentent des activités antiproliférative et anticoagulante. Seule la rstylicine1 présente des activités antimicrobiennes : antifongique sur Fusarium oxysporum (CMI<2.5 μM), et antibactérienne (bactériostatique) sur Vibrio sp (CMI<80 μM). Ce peptide est également capable de se lier aux LPS des bactéries à Gram (-) (Kd= 9.6x10-8 M) et d’agglutiner V. penaeicida "in vitro". Enfin, l’existence de gènes codant des formes modifiées de la stylicine1, chez certaines crevettes, pourrait être en relation avec une diminution de la résistante des individus aux infections.
