Résumé : In tropical shrimp ponds, the increasing of feed input, concomitantly with the stocking shrimp biomass, induces an eutrophication of the ecosystem. Although difficult to maintain, its stability is required to guarantee the success of the culture. A 110-day period of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton stock and dynamics in an earthen pond (1.2 ha area, 1 m depth) was monitored using flow cytometry to provide baseline information on community characteristics and ecosystem instability. Seven autotrophic cell types were identified over the whole sampling period. Prokaryotic cells included Synechococcus sp., a group named UNK which presented an atypical new flow cytometric signature and picoeukaryotes (PEUK). Nanophytoplankton cells were represented by 4 groups: NAN1, NAN2, NAN3 and Cryptophytes. During the first part of the survey, picophytoplankton dominated the phytoplanktonic assemblage. The mean abundance of total cells (up to 8 x 10(6) cells mL(-1)) was among the highest recorded in marine and brackish waters. Bacterial abundance and production ranged from 0.8 to 5.1 x 10(7) cells mL(-1) and from 30 to 110 mu g C L-1 h(-1). A shift from pico to nanophytoplankton abundance was observed for a few days from d 96. During this period, heterotrophic bacteria production and abundance suddenly dropped, implying a change in the functioning of the microbial loop. This shift was concomitant with a significant shrimp mortality outbreak due to Vibrio penaeicida, the etiological agent of a disease known as Syndrome 93, which affects the shrimp industry in New Caledonia. This survey suggests that flow cytometric analysis could be used for the monitoring of aquaculture systems to improve our understanding of the complex phytoplankton and bacterial dynamics of these systems and its potential influence on disease development. Résumé : Shrimp farming is a small but growing industry in New Caledonia. Since 1993, "Syndrome 93" has been affecting New Caledonian shrimp farming industry every cold season, causing severe epizootic mortalities in grow-out ponds and significant losses. Highly pathogenic strains of Vibrio penaeicida are considered the etiological agent of the disease in Litopenaeus stylirostris. On one hand, studies demonstrated that healthy shrimp may carry V penaeicida for weeks with a high overall prevalence, regardless of any seasonal pattern or temperature conditions. On the other hand, larvae are free of V penaeicida and are also resistant to experimental infection. V penaeicida is frequently detected in incoming water pumped from the bays, which was shown, by a molecular typing study, to be the infectious source. This particular epidemiological pattern highlights the major role of the factors that trigger and aggravate the disease in grow-out ponds, where shrimp populations carry the pathogen all year round. In order to gain a better understanding of "Syndrome 93" epidemiology, quantification of V penaeicida both in shrimp and the shrimp farm ecosystem is necessary. This article describes the steps in the successful development of a real-time PCR quantification assay of V penaeicida in shrimp haemolymph, seawater (from ponds or bays) and sediment pore water, including the choice of an accurate extraction technique. The entire detection method; including sample processing, DNA extraction and real-time PCR amplification, can be completed within 4 h. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Résumé : The acquisition of reliable data sets representative of hydrological regimes and their variations is a critical concern for water resource assessment. For the subsurface, traditional approaches based on probe measurements, core analysis, and well data can be laborious, expensive, and highly intrusive, while only yielding sparse data sets. For this study, an innovative field survey, merging relative microgravimetry, magnetic resonance soundings, and hydrological measurements, was conducted to evaluate both surface and subsurface water storage variations in a semiarid Sahelian area. The instrumental setup was implemented in the lower part of a typical hillslope feeding to a temporary pond. Weekly measurements were carried out using relative spring gravimeters during 3 months of the rainy season in 2009 over a 350 × 500 m2 network of 12 microgravity stations. Gravity variations of small to medium amplitude (≤220 nm s−2) were measured with accuracies better than 50 nm s−2, revealing significant variations of the water storage at small time (from 1 week up to 3 months) and space (from a couple of meters up to a few hundred meters) scales. Consistent spatial organization of the water storage variations were detected, suggesting high infiltration at the outlet of a small gully. The comparison with hydrological measurements and magnetic resonance soundings involved that most of the microgravity variations came from the heterogeneity in the vadose zone. The results highlight the potential of time lapse microgravity surveys for detecting intraseasonal water storage variations and providing rich space-time data sets for process investigation or hydrological model calibration/evaluation

Résumé : Shrimp culture in New Caledonia has developed according to the "intensified" semi-intensive model which uses ponds that stretch over several hectares. Local shrimp farms are for the most part installed in "tannes", barren, highly saline areas of the back mangrove forest. These areas generally have impermeable silty clay soils that have biogeochemical features particularly appropriate for benthic life and are often immersed by tides. During the six months of the grow-out phase, the "pond ecosystem" undergoes an increase in potential, progressing from an initial state of "natural lagoon" to a "grow-out pond" that is highly enriched with degrading organic matter....
La crevetticulture calédonienne s'est développée sur le modèle semi intensif « intensifié » qui se pratique en bassins de plusieurs hectares. Les fermes aquacoles locales sont pour la majorité implantées sur des « tannes », zones salées et nues d'arrière mangrove. Ces étendues présentent des sols généralement limono-argileux imperméables dont les caractéristiques bio géochimiques sont le plus souvent appropriées à la vie benthique car fréquemment recouvertes par la marée. Au cours des six mois d'élevage, on assiste à une montée en puissance de l' « écosystème-bassin » qui passe d'un état initial de « lagune naturelle » à celui final d'un « bac d'élevage très enrichi » en produits de dégradation de la matière organique. Le premier « fauteur de troubles » dans un bassin est l'aliment, ou plutôt les conditions imparfaites de l'alimentation qui contribuent fortement à la détérioration de la qualité de la colonne d'eau et du sol et conduisent à des accumulations. Avec la succession de cycles « forcés » par souci de rentabilité, le bassin peut devenir extrêmement consommateur d'oxygène et des zones de plus en plus vastes se recouvrent de vases noires susceptibles de libérer des composés réduits toxiques limitant l'espace vie de la crevette. La dégradation des fonds de bassin n'est cependant pas une fatalité. Les boues bien gérées sont un atout pour le fonctionnement harmonieux d'un tel agro-système et en particulier pour le bien être du cheptel. Le maintien d'une qualité favorable de sédiment pour la production de L.stylirostris passe par la mise en assec d'une durée minimale d'au moins deux semaines. Cette période inter élevage de réhabilitation « à l'air » sera d'autant plus courte et efficace que la zootechnie « en eau » aura été soignée. La Demande en Oxygène du Sédiment (DOS), les Matières Aisément oxydables (MAO), le Redox, l'abondance de la méiofaune, le rapport Protéines/Glucides de la Matière Organique peuvent renseigner les aquaculteurs sur la qualité de leur « foncier ». Ces paramètres prometteurs sont cependant difficiles à mettre en oeuvre au sein des entreprises. Ils sont abordés ici dans le cadre d'un rappel didactique de certaines bases biologiques essentielles pour tirer le meilleur parti de l'assec.

Résumé : Shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia is subject to seasonal mortalities during grow-out due to highly virulent Vibrio nigripulchritudo (Vn). To understand the mechanisms affecting shrimp resistance and leading to significant mortality, a shrimp ecophysiology and immunology survey was conducted on two farms, the first considered as a "control" farm (HC), the second affected by the disease (DF). Mortality observed during the survey at DF started 50 days after stocking and was typical of this disease. The main observations regarding shrimp were: (a) growth was not affected by the disease and was faster in the DF than in the HC pond; (b) disease did not affect one sex more than the other, or a specific part of the population in terms of weight; (c) the physical condition of shrimp did not specifically allow us to foresee disease outbreak; (d) shrimp at late premolt stage D-2 and early postmolt stage A appeared to be at some points of the mortalities - but not continuously - the most sensitive to disease; (e) physiological, immunological and nutritional parameters of uninfected shrimp in the DF pond were altered, suggesting that environmental stress occurred just before the first mortalities; (f) data suggest that Vn-infected shrimp are more stressed than the presumed healthy shrimp. Combined with pathological and environmental knowledge gained in parallel during this survey, a conceptual model is proposed. Results suggest that an unstable environment induced conditions (i) stressful for the shrimp, increasing their susceptibility to bacterial infections and (ii) favoring the proliferation of the pathogen in the pond. The combination of these two processes could lead to significant mortality.

Résumé : The New-Caledonian shrimp industry is based on the controlled reproduction of the shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris, a species which was introduced in the 80s. The major difficulty to which the industry has been faced for 10 years is the occurrence of the "syndrome 93", which corresponds to mortality phases when the temperature falls down in April-May-June. This mortality is associated to the pathogenic bacteria Vibrio penaecida and is expressed at different levels which are variable from year ta year and from pond to pond. No resistance to this pathology has been developed spontaneously. This is likely due to the protocole used to rear spawners, which does not allow to implement an efficient selective pressure at each generation An experimental selection on the criteria of survival after picks of syndrome 93 has been conducted at the Laboratoire Aquacole de Calédonie. The 3rd selected generation demonstrates survival rates improved by 20% during experimental infections with V. penaeicida in comparison with a non selected control population of same genetic origin. The comparison of the correlated responses on the level of expression of 5 genes which are potentially implicated in immunity phenomena (Peneidins, lysozyme, transglutaminase. profiline, annexine) shows that the selected population has a level of expression in lyzozyme twice higher than the control population. This result suggests that the lysozyme could be a genetic marker which could be used in a selective breeding program to he developed in relation with the private hatcheries.
La filière crevette de Nouvelle-Calédonie repose sur la maîtrise de la reproduction contrôlée de la crevette Litopenaeus stylirostris, espèce introduite dans les années 80. La difficulté majeure que rencontre la filière depuis une dizaine d'années est la récurrence du « syndrome 93 », qui correspond à des épisodes de mortalités lors des baisses de température en avril-mai-juin. Ces mortalités sont associées à la bactérie pathogène Vibrio penaeicida et s'expriment à des niveaux d'intensité variable d'une année à l'autre et d'un bassin à l'autre. Aucune résistance vis-à-vis de cette pathologie ne s'est développée spontanément. Ceci est vraisemblablement lié au protocole employé pour l'élevage des géniteurs qui ne permet pas d'exercer une pression de sélection efficace à chaque génération. Une expérience de sélection sur un critère de survie à des épisodes de syndrome 93 a été menée au Laboratoire Aquacole de Calédonie. La 3ème génération sélectionnée montre des survies améliorées de l'ordre de 20% lors d'infections expérimentales à V. penaeicida par rapport à une population témoin non sélectionnée de même origine génétique. La comparaison des réponses corrélées sur le niveau d'expression de 5 gènes potentiellement impliqués dans les phénomènes de défense immunitaire (penaeidine, lysozyme, transglutaminase, profiline, annexine) montre que la population sélectionnée a un niveau d'expression en lysozyme deux fois plus élevé que la population témoin. Ce résultat suggère que le lysozyme pourrait être un marqueur génétique utilisable dans un programme de sélection à développer en relation avec les écloseries de production.

Résumé : A research programm on the marine green turtle Chelonia mydas nesting on the two major reproduction sites for the species in the Indian Ocean, conducled over last 15 years, included intensive tagging programm. Processing of these lagging data provides estimations of adult female populations {or each site and season from two independent methods. First classical method is the ratio of total number of nests produced over a define time on the mean individual number of nests by female during the same time (November, December, January). The computed mean individual number ranges from 3 to 3.5 obtained over 2 to 3 months. The second method is the multiple capture-recapture method (JOLLY, 1965; SEBER, 1965; MANLY, 1984). Il is an original tentative of applying this method for the daily estimation of females number on a nesting site. The results obtained suggest this method to be applied for the species on other sites and to other marine turtle species. Population estimates obtained by these two independent methods are coherent Roughly, the two populations through seasonal nesting activity appear in wealthy state with a mean estimation number of 850 to 1100 females for Tromelin and more variable eslimations ranging from 2000 lo 11 000 females by season for Europa, considering lhe three major nesting months: November to January
Un programme d'observations sur les populations de tortue verte marine Chelonia mydas pondant sur les deux sites de ponte majeurs de l'espèce dans l'océan Indien, Tromelin et Europa, comportait notamment un programme intensif de marquage. L'exploitation de ces données de marquage a permis de réaliser des estimations du nombre de femelles pondant sur chaque site par deux méthodes différentes. La première méthode est celle, classiquement utilisée, du rapport entre le nombre total de pontes déposées pour une période donnée et le nombre moyen de pontes par femelle durant le même temps. On démontre que le nombre moyen individuel de ponte est de l'ordre de 3 à 3,5 pontes par saison. La deuxième méthode est celle des estimations par marquages-recaptures multiples (J OLL Y -SEBER, 1965; MANLY, 1984). C'est une utilisation originale de cette méthode pour l'estimation journalière des populations de tortues femelles sur un site de ponte, qui doit pouvoir être appliquée sur d'autres sites pour la même espèce et pour d'autres espèces de tortues marines. Les résultats obtenus par ces deux méthodes différentes sont cohérents. Schématiquement, on peut conclure à deux populations abondantes de 850 à 1 ZOO femelles sur Tromelin par saison et des estimations moyennes variant de 2 000 à Il 000 tortues par saison pour l'ensemble des plages d'Europa pour les trois mois principaux de ponte par saison: novembre à janvier.

Résumé : A study on nitrogenous and phosphorous waste production in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was carried out in a flow-through land-based farm. The main objectives were (i) to calculate nitrogenous (N) and phosphorous (P) waste production (particulate and dissolved) from in situ measurements for different rearing ponds with specific fish biomasses, fish sizes and flow rates, (ii) to establish nitrogenous and phosphorous waste production budgets, ratios and equations, and (iii) to compare, for the whole farm, in situ measurements to estimate N and P waste production from waste equations. Waste production was manifest by an increase in concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen, total Kjeldhal nitrogen, particulate nitrogen, dissolved phosphorus and total phosphorus concentrations in the outlet water compared to the inlet water for both batches and whole farm. However, no production of nitrite or nitrate was observed. In our budgets, the N and P amounts from biomass gains and wastes were explained by the N and P derived from feed over the range 83.9-105.2 % and 66.5-104.6 % respectively, depending on the fish batch. Values were respectively 103.4 and 87.5 % for the same calculations in the farm. When the whole-farm waste production was calculated from previous equations derived from batches, and then compared with the measured data, the percentages of recovery (estimated by the ratio predicted data/measured data) were 88 and 94 % for total-N and total-P respectively.
L'étude de la production des déchets (azote et phosphore) d'une ferme de production de bars (Dicentrarchus labrax) est réalisée. Cette étude à pour objectif (i) de mesurer in situ la production des déchets azotés et phosphores sous forme particulaire et soluble, pour différents bassins d'élevage présentant des caractéristiques variables en terme de biomasse de poisson, de taille des poissons, de débit de l'eau de renouvellement, (ii) d'établir des équations de production de déchets à partir des données précédemment acquises, (iii) de comparer, pour l'ensemble des rejets au niveau de la ferme, les résultats obtenus par des mesures in situ, d'une part, et à l'aide des équations, d'autre part. La production de déchets se traduit par une augmentation des concentrations de l'azote particulaire, de l'azote ammoniacal, de l'azote organique dissous, ainsi que du phosphore particulaire et dissous. Aucune augmentation des nitrates et nitrites n'est observée. L'établissement des budgets d'azote et de phosphore permettent de rendre compte, selon les bassins, du devenir de 88,2 à 105,2 % de l'azote et de 66,2 à 104,6 % du phosphore introduits dans les bassins sous forme de nourriture en granulés. L'étude des budgets réalisée par les deux méthodes (mesures in situ et utilisation des équations) montre que les budgets établis à l'aide des équations rendent compte respectivement de 88 et 94 % de récupération de l'azote et du phosphore. Ces résultats sont respectivement de 103,4 et 87,5 % lorsqu'ils sont établis par des mesures in situ.

Résumé : The study was conducted to (1) estimate the effects of polyculture of blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris with goldlined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus on production, environmental quality and water and sediment metabolism and (2) to determine if blue shrimp and goldlined rabbitfish polyculture is possible. The experiment was carried out for 12 weeks in a mesocosm system that consisted of 12 circular outdoor mesocosm fiberglass tanks (1.7 m2, 1275 L water volume). Shrimp (2.9 g) were randomly stocked at density of 15 shrimp.m− 2 without rabbitfish (control), with rabbitfish (25.5 g) at low density (1.2 fish.m− 2) (LDRB) and high density (2.4 fish.m− 2) (HDRB). Results indicated that goldlined rabbitfish S. lineatus did not affect shrimp growth performance. At the end of the experiment, the combined shrimp and rabbitfish yields in the LDRB (213 g.m− 2) treatment and the HDRB (295 g.m− 2) treatment were significantly greater (P < 0.05) than the shrimp yield in the control (143 g.m− 2). Most of the water and sediment parameters were similar among treatments. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in gross primary productivity and respiration between the HDRB treatment and the control. It was concluded that the polyculture of blue shrimp with goldlined rabbitfish is technically possible without degradation of the environment in the culture system.

Résumé : Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture takes advantage of the mutualism between some detritivorous fish and phytoplankton. The fish recycle nutrients by consuming live (and dead) algae and provide the inorganic carbon to fuel the growth of live algae. In the meanwhile, algae purify the water and generate the oxygen required by fishes. Such mechanism stabilizes the functioning of an artificially recycling ecosystem, as exemplified by combining the euryhaline tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii and the unicellular alga Chlorella sp. Feed addition in this ecosystem results in faster fish growth but also in an increase in phytoplankton biomass, which must be limited. In the prototype described here, the algal population control is exerted by herbivorous zooplankton growing in a separate pond connected in parallel to the fish-algae ecosystem. The zooplankton production is then consumed by tilapia, particularly by the fry and juveniles, when water is returned to the main circuit. Chlorella sp. and Brachionus plicatilis are two planktonic species that have spontaneously colonized the brackish water of the prototype, which was set-up in Senegal along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline. In our system, water was entirely recycled and only evaporation was compensated (1.5% volume/day). Sediment, which accumulated in the zooplankton pond, was the only trophic cul-de-sac. The system was temporarily destabilized following an accidental rotifer invasion in the main circuit. This caused Chlorella disappearance and replacement by opportunist algae, not consumed by Brachionus. Following the entire consumption of the Brachionus population by tilapias, Chlorella predominated again. Our artificial ecosystem combining S. m. heudelotii, Chlorella and B. plicatilis thus appeared to be resilient. This farming system was operated over one year with a fish productivity of 1.85 kg/m(2) per year during the cold season (January to April).

Résumé : During the GWADASEIS cruise (Lesser Antilles volcanic arc, February-March 2009) a very high resolution (VHR) seismic-reflection survey was performed in order to constrain Late Quaternary to Present faulting. The profiles we obtained evidence frequent "ponding" of reworked sediments in the deepest areas, similar to the deposition of Mediterranean "homogenites". These bodies are acoustically transparent (few ms t.w.t. thick) and are often deposited on the hanging walls of dominantly normal faults, at the base of scarps. Their thickness appears sufficient to compensate (i.e. bury) co-seismic scarps between successive earthquakes, resulting in a flat and horizontal sea floor through time. In a selected area (offshore Montserrat and Nevis islands), piston coring (4 to 7m long) was dedicated to a sedimentological analysis of the most recent of these particular layers. It corresponds to non-stratified homogenous calcareous silty sand (reworked calcareous plankton and minor volcanoclastics). This layer can be up to 2 m thick, and overlies fine-grained hemipelagites. The upper centimeters of the latter represent the normal RedOx water/sediment interface. Pb-210 and Cs-137 activities lack in the massive sands, while a normal profile of unsupported Pb-210 decrease is observed in the hemipelagite below, together with a Cs-137 peak corresponding to the Atmospheric Nuclear Experiments (1962). The RedOx level was thus capped by a recent instantaneous major sedimentary event considered as post-1970 AD; candidate seismic events to explain this sedimentary deposits are either the 16 March 1985 earthquake or the 8 October 1974 one (M-w = 6.3 and M-w = 7.4, respectively). This leads to consider that the syntectonic sedimentation in this area is not continuous but results from accumulation of thick homogenites deposited after the earthquakes (as observed in the following weeks after Haiti January 2010 event, McHugh et al., 2011). The existence of such deposits suggests that, in the area of study, vertical throw likely results from cumulated effects of separated earthquakes rather than from aseismic creep. Examination of VHR profiles shows that all major co-seismic offsets are recorded in the fault growth sequence and that co-seismic offsets can be precisely estimated. By using a sedimentation rate deduced from Pb-210 decrease curve (0.5 mmyr(-1)) and taking into account minor reworking events detected in cores, we show that the Redonda system may have been responsible for five > M-6 events during the last 34 000 yr. The approach presented in this work differs from fault activity analyses using displaced sets of isochronous surfaces and postulating co-seismic offsets. Combining VHR seismic imagery and coring we can decipher co-seismic vs. slow continuous displacement, and thus actually estimate the amplitude and the time distribution of major co-seismic offsets.

Résumé : In a previous study, we demonstrated the existence of an emerging cluster of Vibrio nigripulchritudo that proved to be associated with shrimp mortality events in New Caledonia. Using sequence polymorphisms evidenced in this previous MultiLocus Sequence Typing study, we developed two new quantitative PCR assays permitting the detection and quantification of V. nigripulchritudo at the genospecies level using SYBR Green I chemistry and at the emerging cluster level using Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer technology with hybridization probes. The use of this molecular diagnostic tool evidenced the colonization of the shrimp pond ecosystem by the pathogenic cluster at least at the onset of the disease. This new tool will allow better investigation of the dynamics of this bacterial pathogen in the shrimp farm ecosystem. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Résumé : Batch fecundity and relative fecundity of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean were estimated from seven gravid swordfish females (size range 127-225 cm lower jaw-to-fork length, LJFL) with unovulated, hydrated oocytes collected onboard Reunion-based (France) longline swordfish fishing vessels between December 1999 to January 2001. To investigate the spawning pattern of swordfish, we used data collected through a combination of two at sea sampling regimes. A total of 17 007 geo-located size data of swordfish were recorded during 8 years (1993-2001) and a total of 1727 (size range 75-289 cm, LJFL) swordfish gonads (1107 females and 620 males) were sampled from May 1998 to January 2001. The estimated batch fecundity ranged from 995 000 hydrated oocytes for the smallest ripe female to 4.3 millions for the largest female sampled measuring respectively 127 to 225 cm in curved length (LJFL). The relative fecundity ranged from 25 to 72 hydrated oocytes per gram of body weight. We found that batch fecundity was positively correlated with fish length and that the older/larger females have earlier and longer spawning seasons than younger/smaller females. These findings suggested that older/larger females which are seasonally migrating in this spawning ground seem to play a major role in reproductive success of the species in producing significantly more offspring than younger females during an extended spawning season. Examination of the length-frequency date from the fishery indicated that the young fish are resident around Reunion and around the seamounts off Reunion Island. Our results highlight the important role of the older/larger females in the reproductive capacity of southwestern Indian Ocean stock. We discuss the potential implications of fishing the older/larger females for this stock in terms of reproduction and recruitment.
La fécondité par acte de ponte et la fécondité relative chez l'espadon (Xiphias gladius) dans le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien sont estimées d'après sept femelles de taille comprise entre 127 et 225 cm (de l'extrémité de la mâchoire inférieure à la fourche caudale) ; celles-ci ayant atteint la maturité sexuelle, les ovaires contenant des ovocytes hydratés. Ces femelles ont été pêchées entre décembre 1999 et janvier 2001, par des palangriers ciblant l'espadon et basés à La Réunion. La stratégie de la reproduction chez l'espadon a été étudiée en utilisant des données collectées au cours de deux campagnes d'échantillonnages en mer : soit 17 007 mensurations géo-référencées d'espadons, de 75 à 289 cm, qui ont été enregistrées durant les 8 années d'étude (1993-2001) et 1727 gonades d'espadon (1107 femelles et 620 mâles) prélevées entre mai 1998 et juin 2001.La fécondité par acte de ponte estimée varie de 995 000 ovocytes hydratés, pour la plus petite femelle (127 cm), à 4,3 millions pour la plus grande femelle (225 cm). La fécondité par acte de ponte est corrélée positivement à la taille du poisson. La fécondité relative s'étend de 25 à 72 ovocytes hydratés par gramme de poids de corps. Les femelles les plus âgées/grandes pondent plus tôt et sur une période plus grande que les plus jeunes/petites femelles. Ainsi, les femelles plus âgées/grandes qui migrent de façon saisonnière vers cette aire de ponte, contribueraient plus largement au renouvellement de l'espèce en produisant de façon significative davantage de recrues que les femelles plus jeunes et ceci pendant une saison de ponte plus étendue. Par ailleurs, les jeunes individus semblent séjourner aux abords de l'île de La Réunion et des monts sous-marins situés au large. Nos résultats soulignent l'importance du rôle des femelles âgées/grandes dans la capacité reproductrice du stock d'espadon du sud-ouest de l'océan Indien. Les implications potentielles de la pêche : des femelles âgées et de grandes tailles sont discutées pour ce stock, du point de vue de la reproduction et du recrutement.

Résumé : Penaeid shrimp reared in earthen ponds are exposed to sediment, which can, in some instances, induce a stress. In seawater, the osmoregulatory capacity (hyporegulation) is a useful tool to compare the physiological condition of shrimp exposed to various stressors. By keeping some shrimp in cages at different locations of a single pond heterogeneous in terms of sediment quality, it was possible, using osmotic pressure (OP), to identify some locations where the stress was maximum and some others where it was minimum. Simultaneously, sediment samples were taken and analysed in order to evaluate some physico-chemical parameters that could be related to the stress observed in the shrimps kept in the cages. This approach allowed to show a significant positive correlation between the pH of the sediment surface and the shrimp osmotic pressure. This result was confirmed in a study carried out in experimental 70-1 tanks, where osmotic pressure decreased significantly as water pH decreased from 7.0 to 6.5. The methodology developed in this study may be useful to evaluate the stress caused by sediment in shrimp farms. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Résumé : Vibriosis is a major disease problem in shrimp aquaculture, affecting all developmental stages, from larvae in hatchery tanks to juveniles and broodstock in growout ponds. However, bacterial strains responsible for vibriosis in the successive stages are usually considered to be different, and virulence specificity has been reported both at the species and at the stage levels. The so-called « Syndrome 93 » is a seasonal juvenile vibriosis caused by Vibrio penaeicida which affects Penaeus stylirostris in growout ponds and broodstock tanks in New Caledonia. This pathology does not cause any mortality in hatchery or nursery phases. An experimental infection design using balneation of postlarvae and early juveniles in V. penaeicida suspensions was used to evaluate the developmental stage at which shrimp become sensitive to this vibriosis. We demonstrated that the acquisition of susceptibility to this pathogen is very sudden and correlated with the acquisition of the definitive rostral formula, and from this draw conclusions regarding virulence mechanisms of V. penaeicida in P. stylirostris.

Résumé : Scientific and technical studies carried out under semi-intensive farming conditions, with large earthen ponds (Fig 1), to assess the effects of treatments on zootechnical results are highly complex due to the many logistical, economic and/or experimental constraints involved. In our study, we evaluated the use of floatingcages (Paquotte et al., 1998) immersed in earthen ponds as an experimental tool in order to design future powerful and economical expe-riments under semi-intensive farming conditions.

Résumé : After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Furthermore, it appears that production sustainability depends on many factors among which socio-economy and ecolo gy are of prime importance. The STD3 project titled « Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis )) was initiated in 1994, with the aim to study the sustainability of marine shrimp aquaculture in tropical areas, main! y Indonesia and Vietnam, through the following tasks: (i) improve site selection and study the impact of aquaculture on marine environments presenting a variable sensitivity to organic sewage, (ii) analyse the socio-economical aspects and profitability of the aquaculture industry and of common resources (iii) use remote sensing and geographical data bases for diagnosis and monitoring of site degradation (iv) reinforce the capacity of Asian scientists through training. Severa! aquaculture sites have been investigated in the Lampung region (South Sumatra, Indonesia), the Mekong delta (Vietnam) and on the West coast of New-Caledonia, providing a large range of typical ecosystems encountered in Asia and in the Pacifie, from coralline sites to coastal plains with mangrove and deltaic areas. The study concerned the spatial structure and seasonal influence of these ecosystems, the temporal variation during the course of the project (3 years) and the relation between the ecological structure and farm productions. Remote sensing provides a synoptic vision over large land expanses. Severa! scenes were processed for landuse mapping using conventional classification techniques. Concerning water quality assessment, a general relation for the Java sea was found between image and field data in terms of total suspended matter. Applying this relation to a new site in Sumatra has provided an initial approach to water type and, together with land use mapping, a preliminary assessment of the suitability of the area to shrimp aquaculture development. Socio-economic research has been focused on the identification ofneeds for collective action, including public policy, in the perspective of shrimp farming sustainability. The main concern is in the regulation of shrimp farming intensification and extensification at the scale of coastal ecosystemic entities in a common property resource management perspective. The common considered here is coastal water quality. Comparing the local development profiles and the institutional grounds for the design and implementation of collective management rules shows that variables such as land tenure system, farm owner socio-economic profile, social homogeneity or heterogeneity of the farmers are key factors to analyse the potential for sustainability. The defmition of water quality and the possible means to ensure its collective management are discussed. The main conclusion is that the economie incentives to farming development are strong but there is no significant difference among traditional, semi-intensive and intensive systems in terms of economie efficiency or wealth distribution. The description of the functioning of the different kinds of ecosystems make it possible to give an advice concerning the positioning of the activity inside the ecosystem, and furthermore to have a reference state in order to determine the impact of the activity on the coastal environnement. This impact can be summarized as an increase in the concentration of total suspended matt€?r, of particulate organic matter and of sulfate reducing bacterias. This organic ma~.er is either issued from rearing activities or from telluric origine, due to mangrove eradication when building the ponds. An evaluation of the relationship existing between productivity and characteristics of each ecosystem bas been conducted by correlating ecological indicators data (concentration of total suspended matter, particulate organic matter, chlorophyll, percentage of pheopigments in total pigments and cyanobacteria and sulfatereducing bacteria in water and sediments) with the average production of the farms. This comparison lead to the compilation of a scale of observed production integrating the range of these environmental parameters with shrimp production levels, bound to facilitate the positioning of shrimp farming in relation with the confmement leve! of each ecosystem. Lastly, ali geographie data originated from the various compartments of the study have been geo-referenced and loaded into a geographical information system. This allows to display any query made on spatial variables and their related statistical data, including the ir variations over the last few years and to reveal patterns and phenomena otherwise not obvious.
Le programme mis en oeuvre par la DRV (Paris, CREMA-L'Houmeau, DELIAO Brest, COP Tahiti, GIE/RA Nouvelle Calédonie), dans le cadre d'un projet européen STD3 «(Sciences et Technique au Service du Développement», en collaboration avec l'Université de Montpellier II, l'Ecole Nationale d'Agronomie de Rennes, l'ITC (Hollande), l'Institut Océanographique de Nha Trang (Vietnam), le BADC de Jepara et le BPPT de Jakarta (Indonésie), avait pour but la mise au point de méthodes permettant d'améliorer la sélection des sites ainsi que le suivi du développement et de l'impact de l'aquaculture des crevettes Péneides en milieu tropical pour éviter la surexploitation. Quatre axes de recherche ont été défmis : a) identifier la nature et quantifier les rejets de déchets issus de ce type d'aquaculture, b) définir les caractéristiques écologiques des écosystèmes susceptibles d'accueillir l'activité aquacole et suivre leur évolution sous l'influence des rejets, c) déterminer l'influence de la gestion des fermes et des ressources (aspects économiques) sur les performances de productivité, d) déterminer la capacité de la télédétection comme outil de diagnostic d'impact à l'échelle de la région, e) mener un programme de formation d'étudiants et jeunes chercheurs Vietnamiens et Indonésiens.

Résumé : Shrimp farming in New-Caledonia faces up to difficulties. A fluctuating quality of broodstock prevents sustainable production of larvae in quantity and quality. The traditional extensive rearing method of broodstock in outdoor earthen ponds used in New Caledonia raises several issues: poor water quality control and biosecurity. Therefore it is fundamental to modify the broodstock culture strategy in order to achieve an easier water quality management and maximal biosecurity. Biofloc technology (BFT) offers easier water quality management, higher natural productivity, higher level of biosecurity, and could be a good alternative. Since 2011 a R&D program started under the supervision of IFREMER in New Caledonia and French Polynesia in order to study and develop biofloc technology for rearing shrimp L. stylirostris broodstock. In a first step we showed that biofloc (BFT) improved significantly the reproductive performances of shrimps and the quality of their larvae compared to Clear Water (CW) or Earthen Pond (EP), with: • A better final survival rate of broodstock from BFT compare to CW. • Females from BFT produced more eggs per spawn and spawned more frequently compared to females from CW or EP. • The larvae from BFT females had a significantly higher survival rate compared to larvae from CW females, respectively 70% (n=4) and 45% (n=4). In a second step we studied the underlying biological mechanisms explaining the better reproductive performance and health status of the broodstock from BFT rearing system, and the better quality of their larvae. We showed that the juvenile shrimp fed actively on biofloc, which represented 60% of their whole food (40% coming from pelleted diet). Biofloc represents a significant source of essential nutrients (vitamins, antioxidants, highly unsaturated fatty acids, …) or dietary bacteria which could act as probiotic. These dietary complements could explain the improved health status (immunity and oxidative status status), the better resistance to oxidative stress and a systematically better survival rate of the shrimp reared in BFT compared to those reared in CW.

Résumé : Since 1993, the New Caledonian shrimp industry has been faced with cold season mortality outbreaks of multifactorial origin. This pathology called “Syndrome 93” affects as well animals in grow-out ponds as broodstock after their transfer in maturation room, with up to 35% of mortality in 48 hours. From literature data and physiological studies on Litopenaeus stylirostris, several combinations of three abiotic parameters (temperature, salinity and feeding) have been tested during the breeders stocking period. This research allowed us to lower stress factors impact and to propose a transfer protocol which leads to an optimal physiological comfort of the animal. Results showed that survival rate is improved and spawning rates are twice higher. These findings have come up with a routine protocol of carrying out any transfer in a tank with water at temperature of 26°C, salinity of 26 ppt and no food supply during 48 hours. The use of this protocol in a commercial hatchery led to a significant broodstock survival improvement.
Depuis 1993, la filière crevetticole calédonienne est confrontée aux mortalités de saison froide dont les causes sont multifactorielles. Cette pathologie appelé « Syndrome 93 » affecte non seulement les animaux dans les bassins de grossissement, mais elle touche également les géniteurs après leur transfert en salle de maturation, les pertes pouvant atteindre 35% en 48 heures. A partir de la littérature et d’études physiologiques de la Litopenaeus stylirostris, différentes combinaisons de trois paramètres abiotiques (température, salinité et alimentation) ont été testés lors de la stabulation des reproducteurs en salle de maturation. Ces recherches ont permis de diminuer l’impact des facteurs de stress et d’établir un protocole de transfert des animaux dans les conditions de confort physiologique optimale. Les résultats montrent que la survie est améliorée mais que le pourcentage de pontes est également doublé. Il est maintenant recommandé pour tout transfert, de prévoir des bacs de réception dans lesquels l’eau est à la température de 26°C, la salinité à 26 ppt et de ne fournir aucune alimentation pendant 48 heures. L’application de ce protocole dans une écloserie privée a démontré un gain substantiel sur la survie des géniteurs.

Résumé : An overview of the methods of producing red drum are discussed. Although red drum culture is new compared to the culture of other species there is much interest in the production both in earthen ponds and in recirculating intensive systems. Various strategies for both methods will be discussed. This includes stocking rates, optimum growth, temperature, salinity and growth rates of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus).
