In 1998, the French and Spanish tuna-boat owners associations have volentarily reconducted the Atlantic tuna protection plan (also called moratorium) initiated the previous year. This plan which has become an iccat recommendation for 1999, consists mainly in preventing fishing on floating objects (logs) and in having observers on board tuna purse seiners. Data collected by these observers and landing statistics allow to draw preliminary conclusions on some effects of the protection plan, on the fleets and on the Atlantic tuna stocks. Largely respected, the moratorium has led to a spatial redistribution of the fishing effort, an important reduction of the proportion of sets on logs and a decrease of the landings by one third compared to those realised the years before during the same months, particularily for the skipjack and the bigeye tunas. Moreover, data collected allow to calculate catch rates for a number of by-catch species in the purse seine fishery. Observations sous-marines des communautes de poissons agregees autour des DCP en Martinique: resultats preliminaires Auteur(s) : Laurans, Martial Taquet, Marc Reynal, Lionel Lagin, Alain-sabin Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Fishing with a beach seine for catching small pelagic fishes is a traditional activity in Martinique. Since the early eighties, an important decrease in the number of fishermen practising this activity has been recorded. In the context of high exploitation of reef resources, the beach seine presents a low selectivity, catching too many juveniles of demersal fish. The fads established in coastal areas, have been successfully used in others regions of the world for exploiting small pelagics. Thus, it could allow to favour a change of exploitation style of these resources in Martinique. In partnership, Ifremer, the Regional Council and the Fishing Committee have began an evaluation of the potentialities for this type of structures around the island. To achieve this study, several experimental coastal fads have been established in different places. Surveys by subaquatic observations are periodically carried out to compare the attractive power of different aggregation devices (colour, shape, volume) and understand the factors influencing the determinism of the aggregation (biotic and abiotic). The results presented and discussed correspond to the initial stage of this study which should be pursued in the next months.
Biogeography of tuna and billfish communities Auteur(s) : Reygondeau, Gabriel Maury, Olivier Beaugrand, Gregory Fromentin, Jean-marc Fonteneau, Alain Cury, Philippe Éditeur(s) : Wiley-blackwell Résumé : Aim The aims of this study were: (1) to identify global communities of tuna and billfish species through quantitative statistical analyses of global fisheries data; (2) to describe the spatial distribution, main environmental drivers and species composition of each community detected; and (3) to determine whether the spatial distribution of each community could be linked to the environmental conditions that affect lower trophic levels by comparing the partitions identified in this study with Longhursts biogeochemical provinces. Location The global ocean from 60 degrees S to 65 degrees N. Methods We implemented a new numerical procedure based on a hierarchical clustering method and a nonparametric probabilistic test to divide the oceanic biosphere into biomes and ecoregions. This procedure was applied to a database that comprised standardized data on commercial longline catches for 15 different species of tuna and billfish over a period of more than 50 years (i.e. 1953-2007). For each ecoregion identified (i.e. characteristic tuna and billfish community), we analysed the relationships between species composition and environmental factors. Finally, we compared the biogeochemical provinces of Longhurst with the ecoregions that we identified. Results Tuna and billfish species form nine well-defined communities across the global ocean. Each community occurs in regions with specific environmental conditions and shows a distinctive species composition. High similarity (68.8% homogeneity) between the spatial distribution of the communities of tuna and billfish and the biogeochemical provinces suggests a strong relationship between these species and the physical and chemical characteristics of the global ocean. Main conclusions Despite their high tolerance for a wide range of environmental conditions, these highly migratory species are partitioned into clear geographical communities in the ocean at a global scale. The similarity between biogeochemical and biotic divisions in the ocean suggests that the global ocean is a mosaic of large biogeographical ecosystems, each characterized by specific environmental conditions that have a strong effect on the composition of the trophic web. EU purse seine fishery interaction with marine turtles in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans: a 15 years analyses Auteur(s) : Clermont, Sandra Chavance, Pierre Delgado De Molina, Alicia Murua, Hilario Ruiz, Jon Ciccione, Stephane Bourjea, Jerome Résumé : Bycatch of marine turtles, vulnerable or endangered species, is a growing issue of all fisheries, including Oceanic purse-seine fishery. The present paper seeks to assess marine turtle bycatch at a spatial and temporal level in the European purse seine fishery operating in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The study was based on data collected through French and Spanish observer programs from 1995 to 2011, a period where more than 230 000 fishing sets were realized by the UE fleets in both Oceans. A total of 15 913 fishing sets were observed, including 6 515 on drifting Fish Aggregate Devices (FAD) and 9 398 on Free Swimming Schools (FSC). Over the study period, 597 turtles were caught, 86% being released alive at sea. At the same time, from 2003 to 2011, 14 124 specific observations were carried out on floating objects whether they ended in a set or not. 354 marine turtles were observed upon which 80% were already free or entangled alive and therefore released alive. At the temporal and spatial level, data were organized and analysed by Ocean, fishing mode (FAD vs. FSC) as well as by year, quarter and statistical square of 1°. In order to evaluate the impact if this fishery in both Oceans, bycatch distribution was compared to the total fishing effort of the UE fleet, as well as to the known marine turtle post nesting migration routes, nesting population abundances and known feeding areas. The species composition, the size and sex structure of bycatch are also discussed here. At last, an attempt to raise the data to the total fishing effort was carried out. Based on observation of marine turtle by-catches on sets, we estimated that, globally, 3500 marine turtles were accidentally captured by the EU-PS fleet in the Atlantic Ocean from 1995 to 2010, and around 2000 in the Indian Ocean from 2003 to 2010, with a corresponding annual bycatch rate of 218 (SD=150; survival rate =91%) and 250 (SD=157; survival rate =77%) respectively in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. However, because of important uncertainties mainly due to the low observation coverage and the scarcity of marine turtle bycatch events, it was impossible to produce solid and reliable global estimates of marine turtle bycatch and mortality due to PS activity. Contribution et Dépendance des flottilles de pêche aux espèces commerciales majeures du Golfe de Gascogne Auteur(s) : Daures, Fabienne Planchot, Marie Demaneche, Sebastien Van Isenghem, Sylvie Berthou, Patrick Leblond, Emilie Jezequel, Michele Résumé : In order to provide economic indicators for fisheries, analysis of contribution and economic dependencies of the Bay of Biscay fishing fleets to major commercial species catching in the ICES VIII area is conducted. 9 species are considered (regarding the importance of their landings in this area): Sole, Norway Lobster, Sea bass, Hake, Anglerfish, Anchovy, Sardine, Cuttlefish and Monkfish. The landings data are provided by the Harmonie database of the Fisheries Information System of Ifremer and the analysis per specie is done for the 2005 year on one side and over the period 2000-2005 on the other side. A stock slip is built for each species and presents :
- Key figures on landings in the Bay of Biscay (total landings, average price, number of vessels concerned and share in the national landings)
- Assessment of the concentration of landings
- Assessment of the fleets' contribution to these total landings
- Assessment of the fleets' economic dependence to the species based on the income share depending on this species.
Les ressources halieutiques de l'etang de Berre Auteur(s) : Le Corre, Gildas Garcia, Fabrice Résumé : Fishing activity in the french mediterranean lagoon Etang de Berre is actually allowed in spite of a degradation of the environment during the last fifty years. To analyse the results and the working of the fishery, a study based on a sampling survey of catches and fishing effort has been conducted in the various landing ports over a two years period. Annual weight and value productions by species and gear have been evaluated by mean of statistical calculation procedures. The results show that the fishery is based on the exploitation of two main species (anguilla and grey mullet) and that important variations exist between the two sampled years. The limits to be reached by the working of this fishery are prompted in the scope of a future regulation. Tome 1. Concepts et modèles Auteur(s) : Laurec, Alain Le Guen, Jean-claude Laurec, Alain Le Guen, Jean-claude Éditeur(s) : CNEXO Résumé : This book constitutes the first of a series of three volumes, the purpose of which is to cover the principal methods used in fish population dynamics. It is devoted to the definition of the main concepts, ami the presentation of the usual mathematical models. The second volume will deal with the fitting of the models, and the estimation of parameters. The third will be devoted to sampling problems. These volumes will be recollections of communications presented during ad hoc seminars, hold in Brest (GSG/COB) in 1980 and 1981. The first part deals with the basic concepts related to the two components whose relationship is being described by the population dynamics, namely the fish stock, to its relations with biological populations, and to the partition of catchabtiity into its components (vulnerability, availability...). The second chapter of this part is devoted to the quantification of exploitation. This leads to a discussion of nominal and effective fishing effort and fishing intensity. A brief review of the use of catch per unit of effort as an index of abundance is followed by a discussion of the concept of fishing power. The second part starts with some general remarks on mathematical modelling (chapter III), then comes to the two classical categories of models : global (surplus production) models (chapter IV), and structural models (chapter V). Chapter IV is mainly a review, based upon the SCHAEFER and PELLATOMLINSON models. Some less classical formulas from the recent literature are also introduced. Attention is paid to the underlying hypotheses and to the limitation of such models. The reader is finally referred to papers presenting the developments that could make it possible to overcome some of these limitations. Chapter V is based upon the classical BEVERTON and HOLT and RlCKER models, and the yield per recruit concepts. This field is however inlarged. Other commonly used variants of structural models are presented with an effort being made to clarify the real differences between all these variants. Special attention is also paid to so-called regenerative models and to the use of spawing-biomass or fecundity per recruit, which are likely to become commonly used in the coming years. In all cases, special attention is paid to the presentation of the basic formulas, that the reader might have to use if faced with a practical problem. Finally, a discussion of the underlying hypotheses takes place, before a brief review of the main developments, where the reader is referred to the appropriate literature. An overview of the FADs fishery in the Mediterranean Sea Auteur(s) : Morales-nin, B Cannizzaro, L Massuti, E Potoschi, A Andaloro, F Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 15-19 octobre 1999 Résumé : The Mediterranean small-scale fleet is highly adaptive, showing a dynamic fishing intensity and strategy, and exploiting seasonal abundant resources. In this area, the aggregatory behaviour under floats of juvenile fish has been used since ancient times to exploit oceanic migratory species such as dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), using Fish Aggregating anchored Devices (fads). A total of 2 300 boats are engaged in this fishery from August to December, the main fishing areas being those around Malta, Tunisia, Sicily and Majorca. The fads ( arrow right m2) are made of different cheap floating materials, and are moored in fixed places, ranging from shore waters to areas 60 miles off the coast (1 500 m depth). Each boat deploys an average of 20 to 100 fads. The gears used are special surrounding nets without purse line, and traditional purse seine nets. The fishery exploits young-of-the-year dolphinfish (<6 months old), originated by a pre-spawning migration of adults from Atlantic waters. Their catches show high annual and monthly variability, depending on the recruitment and the accessibility of recruits to the fishery. Pilotfish (Naucrates ductor) and greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) are also exploited in this fishery as by-catch. A total of about 1 000 metric tons of dolphinfish are yearly caught mainly in September-October. The fads are historically laid in August. Recently, the fads fishing period has increased in Sicily, and the fads are laid in July, so as to catch pilotfish and greater amberjak juveniles. In recent years, the interest for this fishing method and the study of these fisheries has increased in the Mediterranean. Though the market and its seasonality limit this exploitation, this fishery is economically profitable with good revenue. Marine cage fish farming Auteur(s) : Espeut, P. Harache, Yves Lemarie, Gilles Ricard, Jean-marc Résumé : Marine capture fisheries in Jamaica is primarily artisanal in nature ansd is conducted maiinly by fishermen operating from canoes. Approximately 95% of these fishermen operate on the coastal shelf and its associated banks. The commercial species harvested comprise bottom-dwelling, coral reef species and free swimming species of finfish. Other fishery resources of commercial value include marine shrimp, conch and lobsters. Catch statistics are not available for all species, but the Department of Fisheries reports a slight decline in fishery production with production decreasing from 16 milion lbs in 1990, despite the fact that fishing efforts have doubled. Over this period the number of registered fishermen has grown from 12 000 to 16 000, al of whom are engaged in full-time fishing. There arealso part-time fishermen who are not registered. The decline in fish catch is accompanied by a decrease in fish size and quality, suggesting that the fisheries are under pressure and have already exceeded optimum production in relation to vailable resources. As a result the economic returns to fishermen are declining. There are also other problems, such as high incidence of conflicts among fishermen at sea, the high cost of purchasing boats, outboard engine fuel, and equipment, with together with the dangers involved in fishing offshore (piracy, and praedial larceny) create serious social ans economic difficulties for fishermen. Notwithstanding, there is an apparent move on the part of the fishermen to leave the industryor to seek alternative forms of employment. In fact, the Department ofFisheries reports that it is still reciving applications for new licences to operate fishing boats. This is probably due to the fact that where the basis of a community is fishing, it becomes difficult to introduce alternative forms of employment, such as cottage industries, village crafts and other trades. In 1987 the Jamaica Department of Fisheries prepared a Management plan which proposed several conservation measures to promote the efficient use of fisheries resources and to control the development of the Fishery in such a way that the country would receive highest benefits. Adequate attention was given to limitations on fishing gear, institution of closed seasons and related legislation. Strategies to diversify the marine fishing were also proposed. The 1990 five year Devlopment Plan for marine fisheries also focuses on proper resource management in order to reverse trends associated with the overexploitation of marine resources. According to the plan, emphasis will be placed on inland fisheries and mariculture in order to reduce pressure on the fisheries. Inland fisheries in the form of freshwater fish fanning has expanded significantly over the past 10 years with production increasing from less than 0,5 million lbs. in 1980 to in excess of 6.0 million lbs. in 1989. However, some freshwater fish farmers are already experiencing serious competition for water usage and, to a lesser extent for land from crop-producing farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture is of the view that marine cage culture technologically has the potential for introduction in Jamaica . This technologyhas been successfully developed in Norway and the technology is currentlty being experimentally utilized in several countries in the area. The technology, if widely utilized in Jamaica, couls significantly reduce pressure on fisheries, making fishing more cost effective and improve the economic returns to fishermen. Already there exist some technical and institutional capabilities in Jamaica to support commercial development of marine cage culture. The Department of Fisheries has highly trained personnel in aquaculture and marine fisherie, some of whom are directly responsible for the success of freshwater fish fanning. In adition, the Marine Laboratory at the Univesity of the West Indies (UWI) is caarying research on hatchery facilities for marine cage farming. The Department of Fisheries will seek the collaboration ofg the marine unit at UWI which could provide fingerlings of selected marine species for cage 1 Les pêcheries de captage marin en Jamaïque sont principalement de nature artisanale et elles sont dirigées principalement par les pêcheurs qui travaillent depuis des canoës. Consequences des recents changements de maillage sur les rendements de la flotille langoustiniere lorientaise en Mer Celtique Auteur(s) : Morizur, Yvon Charuau, Anatole Éditeur(s) : ICES-CM-1981/K:36 Résumé : Some trawlers from Lorient (France) are fishing for Nephrops at the North of 48th parallel. During the last years, the mesh size of their cod-end changed twice. It increased from 45 mm to 60 mm at the end of year 1978 and to 70 mm at the end of year 1979.'. Whereas the change to 60 mm seems to have no immediate- effect on Nephrops landings, the increase from 60 mm to 70 mm results in a loss in Nephrops landings of 30-40 %. That loss in Nephrops landings goes with an increase in some by-catches species as whiting, cod and hake. Analyzing the market position of fish species subject to the impact of long-term changes: a case study of French fisheries in the Bay of Biscay Auteur(s) : Le Floc' H, P Poulard, Jean-charles Thebaud, Olivier Blanchard, Fabian Bihel, J Steinmetz, Fabien Éditeur(s) : EDP Sciences Résumé : Market position and its evolution were analysed in nine key fish and cephalopod species subject to long-term changes, using the Bay of Biscay fisheries as a case study. Although such long term changes have already been documented, and in some cases shown to be related to the impacts of fishing, changes in the physical environment, or both, relatively little work has been devoted to their potential consequences in economic terms. The nature and extent of these consequences was determined in the present study by looking at the composition of the affected fish production, and the status of different fish products on the markets. We propose a methodology to characterize market position for this set of nine species. The selected species represent a significant part of the gross turnover of French fishing fleets operating in the bay. These species were characterized in terms of their potential sensitivity to fishing and changes in environmental conditions due to global warming. We separated species potentially positively (Engraulis encrasicolus and Lophius budegassa) and negatively affected (Pollachius pollachius and Lophius piscatorius) by warming. Evolution of the value of production of the nine species was then depicted using analysis of macro-economic index (production and potential consumption) and price indices. This revealed the relatively high sensitivity of domestic production to the market crisis that occurred in France in the early 1990s, compared to imported and exported products. The relative position of individual species, with respect to the market and its evolution between 1990 and 2005, was analyzed by multi-factorial analysis. Results derived from the analysis clearly distinguish two groups of species, the first characterized by higher prices (monkfish, Nephrops, sole, seabass) and the second by larger volumes available on the French market (pollack, hake, anchovy, sardine, cuttlefish). We conclude that a major part (69 to 87%) of the gross turnover associated with catches of these fish species in the Bay of Biscay remains potentially unaffected by long-term changes related to climate. Environmental noise affects the fluctuations of Atlantic large pelagics Auteur(s) : Rouyer, Tristan Fromentin, Jean-marc Stenseth, Nils Chr. Éditeur(s) : Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd Résumé : Environmental variables affect many processes of fish biology and their fluctuations are thought to be one of the main factors in variability of fish stocks. Recent work has shown that the variability of the environment in the frequency domain (i.e., the environmental noise) can interact with endogenous processes (e.g., density dependence) and affect fluctuations of animal populations. In this study, we investigate whether fluctuations of large pelagics' time series are affected by environmental noise and whether life-history traits of species modulate this response. By analysing several environmental variables and a large dataset of tuna and billfish catch per unit effort (CPUE) time series from the Atlantic, we show that in environments dominated by long-term fluctuations (i.e., red noise) CPUE time series were less variable and displayed smoother fluctuations. Furthermore, larger, slower-growing and later-maturing species were found to be more sensitive to changes of environmental noise than species with a shorter turnover rate. Our results suggest that environmental noise interacts with fish biology; understanding how it is integrated into biological processes might provide important insights to understand the responses of fish stocks dynamics to exploitation and environmental changes. Early stages of snapper-grouper exploitation in the Caribbean (Bay Islands, Honduras) Auteur(s) : Gobert, Bertrand Berthou, Patrick Lopez, E Lespagnol, Patrick Turcios, Maria Dolores Oqueli Macabiau, Christophe Portillo, Pedro Éditeur(s) : Elsevier Résumé : In the Caribbean, snappers (Lutjanidae) and groupers (Serranidae) are often heavily exploited by artisanal or industrial fisheries. This paper analyzes the catches of an artisanal fishery selectively targeting these species with a moderate fishing pressure in the Bay Islands (Honduras), and discusses the implications on the understanding of the early stages of development of reef fisheries. Although snappers and groupers are targeted with handlines and spearguns in the whole archipelago, the differences in species diversity and size structure of the catch reveals various exploitation patterns. In most areas, a depletion is observed for the most vulnerable snapper and grouper species, and most other species are mainly exploited in their juvenile phase; clear signs of an intensification process are apparent in one of the areas. The comparison of the relative production in the Bay Islands with other reef fisheries in the Caribbean suggests that higher values may be related to moderate fishing pressure and appropriate combinations of fishing effort and selectivity. This example shows how fisheries strictly targeting a high quality resource with selective fishing techniques can be quite productive even at high levels of effort, but also that they are progressively lead to broaden their species range (sooner or later at the expense of the most vulnerable, often large-sized, species) while increasingly using less selective gears. An investigation of human vs. technology-induced variation in catchability for a selection of European fishing fleets Auteur(s) : Mahevas, Stephanie Vermard, Youen Hutton, Trevor Iriondo, Ane Jadaud, Angelique Maravelias, Christos D. Punzon, Antonio Sacchi, Jacques Éditeur(s) : Oxford Univ Press Résumé : The impact of the fishing effort exerted by a vessel on a population depends on catchability, which depends on population accessibility and fishing power. The work investigated whether the variation in fishing power could be the result of the technical characteristics of a vessel and/or its gear or whether it is a reflection of inter-vessel differences not accounted for by the technical attributes. These inter-vessel differences could be indicative of a skipper/crew experience effect. To improve understanding of the relationships, landings per unit effort (lpue) from logbooks and technical information on vessels and gears (collected during interviews) were used to identify variables that explained variations in fishing power. The analysis was undertaken by applying a combination of generalized additive models and generalized linear models to data from several European fleets. The study highlights the fact that taking into account information that is not routinely collected, e. g. length of headline, weight of otter boards, or type of groundrope, will significantly improve the modelled relationships between lpue and the variables that measure relative fishing power. The magnitude of the skipper/crew experience effect was weaker than the technical effect of the vessel and/or its gear. Examen des prises accessoires de la pêcherie de crevettes peneides du plateau continental de la Guyane française Auteur(s) : Lemoine, Michel Vendeville, Philippe Ladurelle, Christophe Éditeur(s) : ISTPM Résumé : At this moment, the quasi-totality of the catches of the 95 licensed or French trawlers fishing on the shelf of French Guyana is thrown overboard, except for shrimps. This waste, which has been going on for 20 years in French Guyana, is the consequence a very specific production system which has just been the focus of a study by some French scientists who assessed it and tried to provide some solutions. It appears that the use of these neglected resources can be made at three different levels: 1) by making the boats keep the totality of the species they already partially keep, 2) by making them keep a series of complementary species which can be sold directly as raw fish products, 3) by collecting the leftovers for the making of sub-products or flour. Guam Fish Aggregating Device programme Auteur(s) : Torres, A Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : Installation and maintenance of FADs by the Government of Guam began in 1979, initially with funding from the Salstonstall-Kennedy Act through the Pacific Tuna Development Foundation. Current funding for the Guam FAD project is provided through the Dingell-Johnson/Wallop-Breaux Sport Fish Restoration programme, a Federal Aid Project funded by taxes collected on the purchase of fishing equipment and motorboat fuels nationwide. There are now sixteen operational FAD sites in Guam's waters. At a cost of approximately US$10,000 per system, concern for the rising costs of replacing and maintaining FAD systems has prompted the Department of Agriculture's Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (DAWR) to investigate alternative FAD maintenance strategies and system design. Several cost-cutting measures being considered include the use of reliable solar-powered navigation lights to reduce the number of maintenance trips required, and switching to a newer generation of lighter, more durable buoys and mooring systems. Average time on station for a dawr fad system is nearing two years. Interestingly, in most cases where an errant system is recovered, the failure in the mooring system was observed to occur at a depth from 35 to 500 metres. These observations have led to speculation that additional protection of the mooring line down to 500 m may result in doubling the average time on station of most FAD systems. Baitboat as a tuna aggregating device Auteur(s) : Hallier, Jean-pierre Delgado De Molina, A Éditeur(s) : Pêche thonière et dispositifs de concentration de poissons, Caribbean-Martinique, 15-19 Oct 1999 Résumé : The original baitboat fishing technique using a permanent association between the fishing boat and the tuna school has been developed by the baitboat fleet of Dakar, Senegal and is also in use in the Canary Islands. This new fishing technique, the result of 20 years of improvements still on, has induced a dramatic increase of the catch yields which, in turn, has sustained the survival and even a recent development of the fleet. This technique is based on the aggregating behaviour of tropical tunas. However, it contains a dynamic component which is not found in tuna fishing on drifting or anchored fads. The specifications of the method, its refinement over the years and its main consequences for the fishery are described together with the school exchanges between baitboats over months even from one year to the next. Based on the analysis of 1228 recoveries from 5500 tagged fish, tuna movements among associated schools, between associated schools and free schools fished by purse seiners and movements in and out of the baitboat fishing grounds help to better understand the dynamics of tunas and schools of this peculiar tuna association. These data show a very high recovery rate, a remarkable tuna fidelity to the original school for all species, a small number of recoveries within the purse seine catch as well as the rare tuna movements outside the baitboat area. The study highlights the complexity and the numerous consequences of tuna and school behaviour. La pêche au vivaneau en Guyane française Auteur(s) : Prevost, Etienne Résumé : Traditionally fished by line and conical fishing basket by Venezuelan ships, the red snapper resource off the coast of French Guyana (fish belonging to the Lutjanidae family) has been experiencing intensive fishing since 1984-85 due to the boom in classic fishing techniques and the development of trawl fishing.
The study evaluates the situation of this resource's potential: biology, sampling data, bio-statistics (size and sex), size-weight relationship of the three species, specific composition of the catches, describes fishing devices and prospecting, pinpoints fishing spots, gives a distribution of the Venezuelan and Martinique fishing effort.
